I do love me some stuffed crust Pizza Hut but it's nice to help out the little guy every once in a while and Villa May makes that worth it.
I'm not a big fan of traditional Chicago-style deep dish pizza, so it's nice to find a place that specializes--and excels--in thin crust. And oh what delicious crust it is! Light and buttery with the perfect crispness to it. I've tried their specialty pizza which includes sausage, onions, and basil and that was very good. I also tried a pie with pepperoni and basil and, despite being a little heavy on the basil, was still very tasty.
The only downside is the price, but if you don't mind paying a few extra dollars for a quality pie from a neighborhood joint then it shouldn't be a problem. Also, the owner is super friendly so that makes the choice that much easier.
If you're nearby and enjoy a good thin crust pizza then I recommend giving this little guy a shot. -

Heads up - Villa May has changed hands and things have changed in terms of their product, not for the better I'm sad to say.
Returned home from a trip and decided to order using a recent menu asking for the Monday night free appetizer special. Was told that the offer no longer applied because they were "under new management." Placed my order for thin crust large pizza with sausage - after having to give all my details in terms of address, phone etc. because they obviously are starting over with a new database.
My regular friendly delivery guy was not the one who delivered the pizza. The pizza arrived and it was not thin crust. More like New York Style pizza with a thick crust. Different sauce, different sausage. Just different and not in a good way.
Now I'm on the search for a reasonably priced, quickly delivered, true thin-crust pizza in the Andersonvile/Edgewater area. -
Review from Sarah L.
We don't usually order pizza at my house and we wanted a change of pace. My guy found Villa May on GrubHub and he thought $11.99 for an 18 inch cheese pizza was a good deal. Well, each additional topping is $2.50! We got 4 toppings and our pie nearly cost us $30!!!! Damn. It wouldn't be a big deal but Villa May are VERY skimpy on their toppings.
Delivery was fast, delivery man was happy and our pizza was hot. I think next time we'll stick to fewer toppings so the cost isn't a sticker shock. Villa May's pizza is very thin but it is good. Just beware of the expensive and skimpy toppings!Listed in: Pizzzzah!

I had a slice late one night, when it should have tasted its best. It was ungodly awful.

Horrible experience. When I got the pizza the majority of the cheese was on one half, with the rest being in the corner of the box, and them promptly onto my table when I opened it. The dough was not completely cooked, and the entire pizza wasn't even cut....never again.

Eh. Welcome to Chicaaago. We kinda like our pizza arounds heres.
Well, if you're looking for the big boppers in the Chi-town 'za scene, you're probably not going to find Villa May on the list. But sometimes that's what makes a little neighborhood joint like this the best.
Cheap as they come, with a huge selection of hot food and the holy trinity of Chicago 'za - stuffed (deep dish's little cousin), pan and party style, i.e. Chicago thin crust.
Now, I wouldn't go out of your way to put this on a Pizza Pilgrimage to the Windy City, but if you're looking for a tasty pie on the Northside, give Villa May a shot.
You alls wonts regret it.Listed in: The Zen of 'Za

Tonight was a good night for a little something I like to call "junk drawer surprises." I'm somewhat of a coupon addict, and therefore my poor little junk drawer is jam packed with menus, coupons, random crap, etc to the point of not being able to find anything...I voyage in there and pick out one, and then that's what I eat for the night :)
Many of them, as it turns out, are from Villa May. They were declared the winner, and I dialed them up to get something in this house that is 1. not canned and 2. not cooked by me.
Granted the coupons sort of...sucked. I mean you get a small cheese pizza if you order a $22 18" pizza. Hmmm, ok. The 1 liter Diet RC is a good bonus, however RC is somewhat terrible in my opinion...but of course I am drinking it anyway...and "free delivery" should not be a coupon. I digress...somehow the bill was $30, plus tip. Hmmm.
The pizza itself was quite good, but what the hell's up with pizza coming in a bag? Yeah, no box. Do you know hard it is to eat pizza on the couch with no box? It's very challenging. Try that on top of trying to type this review...IMPOSSIBLE, the dog just scored an entire piece and I barely noticed.
Quick delivery. Friendly delivery guy. Good pizza. Crappy coupons, but plentiful. They need to get boxes, if/when that happens I will order again...

This was DELICIOUS! delivery took like just over an hour so that's kind of a pain but it was mostly hot when it came. We split all the stuff below:
Meat Ravioli: lots of sauce super tasty
Lasagna: HUGE brick, tasty lots of cheeses
Pepperoni Pizza Slice: great pizza, good sauce and crust, but better reheated the next day
Little side salad: nice little salad w ranch
Fries: tasty fries better reheated the next day
I'd say heat up the oven if you want your dinner piping hot; throw it all in when the delivery gets there. But if you don't mind it warm it'll come mostly just warm. I ate some warm and then heated the rest up on about 400 for 13 or so minutes the next day. -

Before I elaborate on anything about this place, I must kindly warn you that you will get into a passionate affair with their food once you discover it, and this is especially not good for people who are committed -- to a diet, that is.
I have never visited the restaurant, but they delivered to us a few times, and we're already hooked. I may be inclined to agree that they have the best pizza on the north side, but only to an extent. If you want hardcore Italian pizza, go to Spacca Napoli or Pizza D.O.C., but if you're looking for American pizza, this is the place to call.
The first time I ordered from them, I got their thin-crust pizza, and it was so good that it's the only kind of pizza I order from them now. I think they have a secret recipe for their sauce because it's sweet (not too sweet, though) and it complements the crust and the toppings very well. The crust is very crispy (not too crispy, though) and light. Their pizzas always seem to have the perfect amount of cheese -- not too much, not too little. Basically, their thin-crust pizzas are pretty much perfect.
If you need to get an appetizer, I'd strongly recommend the garlic bread with sauce. It's.... indescribable. I'm lucky they give me only two slices of bread per order because I would've eaten the whole loaf in a heartbeat if given the chance.
Mmm... I want me some pizza. Where's the phone?Listed in: Only in Chicago...

I have a friend who swears by Villa May. Me -- not so much. I've ordered from the a few times -- especially since they moved up the street from me -- and while I have no real complaints, they're not a stand-out for me. The crust is good, though I can't say much more about it than it's crisp (which, believe me, I'm grateful to have), and while they push their three cheeses (mozz, provolone and romano), I don't really notice a difference. Perhaps I have pizza burnout.
I've been unimpressed by other things I've ordered from them. Their sandwiches are on the small side, and their fried items (onion rings, mushrooms) always seem to be overdone. I may try their pasta dinners, since I've read good things about them.
Online Order Warning: Villa May is available through both GrubHub and Order network. Their prices are higher on GrubHub.
Medium Cheese Pizza:
Paper menu: $8.25
Order Network $8.25
GrubHub: $8.49
Mixed Basket Appetizer:

I love Villa May. I love them even more since they moved a block from my apartment. They have the most delicious thin crust pizza in my opinion. I love the sauce the cheese. My favorite way to eat this pizza is with jalapenos and Cajun seasoning on it.
It is a must try.
I also love that i can send my boyfriend to pick up the pizza and not be charged for delivery.
I do eat other things off of their menu, but really nothing compares to their pizza, it is goodness. Their pizza and elites everyday would make me a happy camper, and I could do it too! -

I was born and raised a south side Chicagoan, and this place always reminds me of home. What, you say? Southside pizza is different? Yes, it is, in a way that is hard to exactly describe.
I should say, I usually only get the thin-crust here. The stuffed pizza is fine, but nothing different from, say, Giordano's or Chicago's Pizza. The thin crust is a whole 'nother animal. I love a place that even has delicious crust. Villa May strikes the right balance: crispy, slightly charred bottom, slighty soft and chewy cheese side. They use a three-cheese blend for all their pies (mozzarella, provolone and romano), and are actually certified as natural cheese users. My favorite lately is pepperoni, sausage and giardiniera.
Ah, this is a little bit of what makes me think of south side pizza delivery joints: each pizza comes with a free liter of RC (or if you prefer, one of the RC products). Free RC liters are soooo south side. If you prefer, you can forego the liter for a free small cheese pizza. It's an ongoing Web site special.
Delivery is quick, I usually get my pizza 35 minutes after I call. It should be noted that this is really a take-out or delivery place, not a restaurant, 'though they have some seats if you want to get a slice and a pop and sit. The menu also includes burgers, fried chicken and pastas, but I've found their thin-crust pizza to be the only reason I keep coming back. Highly delicious, traditional Chicago pizza. -

We've received tons of menus from Villa May but ordered for the first time on Friday night, during a horrible storm. I was prepared for a long wait but no, we had our pizza in under 45 minutes.
I love that they didn't laugh at our order (XL thin, half sausage, half spinach, easy on the cheese on the spinach half.) When I saw the receipt, they actually had a code for light cheese. There was the perfect amount of cheese on my spinach half and the right amount on my husband's sausage half. That alone would make me order from here again!
The only downside is that they only had RC or 7up, and nothing diet. I had a beer from home instead. -

Welp, I've gotta go below the average stars for this place. After reading the reviews here, I was expecting the second coming of Christ atop my Pizza from Villa May. What I got was a fairly average delivery pizza. Honestly nothing special. Having it delivered was probably not the best way to experience my first 'za here, but I wanted to try it. We ordered it on Sunday evening, which is probably very busy there. The pie arrived in about 45 minutes, under the 1 hour quoted. I right away grabbed the little corner triangle piece to get a quick taste to get the overall feel for the pizza & knew right away it was just OK, not very hot, probably due to the time from oven to my counter.
Sorry to bring down the stars, but it certainly didn't deserve any more than I gave it. -

Villa May disappeared for a while with no explanation. Then when I ordered from a different place that wasn't as good, the delivery guy said he remembered me because I used to order from Villa May and he used to deliver to my apartment. He explained to me that the owner had died, but they will be opening again soon. After it re-opened I didn't really see a difference in customer service. They still deliver in less than an hour and the delivery guy always throws in some small talk, which I appreciate.
The thin crust pizza would be average except I really love the crust. It's not tough and overbaked like a lot of thin crust is. It's crispy and buttery and holds pretty well. Last time I ordered a Margherita pizza, which is one of the wettest pizzas you can get. The crust held together without being too tough. I'm a fan. -

I've been ordering from this place back when they were on Montrose and I was more then happy when they moved closer to my current spot. This place has some of the best thin crust in the city with friend service and fast delivery. The Roman is a personal favorite of mine - you got to try it. I've never actually tried any of their ribs or sandwiches as I only get their pizza.
I hope their 'renovation' is over soon. I found that strange as they've been in the building a little less then a year. -

I've had bad luck with pizza over the past six months, and being a thin crust girl, I tend to be shit out of luck period in Chicago for pizza. I ordered Villa May last week in a lazy stupor, and despite the delivery man going to the building across the street (I got to yell across the street that he was at the wrong building), everything else was perfect.
I ordered a thin-crust black olive pizza, and I am usually dismayed by a lack of sauce and/or cheese. This pizza, though? It arrived piping hot, 20 minutes prior to the scheduled delivery time, and cheesy as can be. The next day, I piled the leftovers into a tupperware and crossing my fingers, prayed that it would be good for leftovers (I'd been unsuccessful with BoJono's pizza for leftovers), and boy oh boy was I not let down.
I'll be ordering from here again, for sure. -
Review from David R.
These guys made me a calzone even though it isn't on the menu. I'm not exactly sure how he rung it up, but it was $11 with tax. However, what I got was enormous--not the thickest calzone but definitely the biggest I've ever had in width and length. It looked like it might have been about a 14" pizza crust folded over.
The calzone was good but not great. The crust was holding it back a bit--very bland and a little tough. Actually, all the ingredients were in 100% perfect proportion--toppings, cheese, sauce, crust--and there was even a nice herb/parmano sprinkle on top. But somehow, it just didn't seem to add up to more than the sum of its parts. Thus, good but not great. Overall B. I would eat it again if I were up the street and wanted a calzone.
This is a straight-up three-star joint that gets an extra star for customer service. Besides agreeing to make me a non-menu item, they were all nice guys. -

Villa May was always one of my favorite pizza places in the city when it was on Montrose. They had very flavorful crust and the sauce was spiced just right. I have always told everyone they have the best pizza in the city, and loved going in for a slice if I was in the mood for a quick bite.
I've ordered a few times since they have moved, and I've noticed that the recipe seems to be slightly different. The crust is still delicious, but it seems much flimsier than it used to be. The sauce is different too - it seems thinner than before. The employees and delivery people are still very friendly, and very fast! I ordered tonight just before six and they told me 40 minutes to an hour, and the guy got here by 6:25 with a fresh and still very hot pizza. I still like the pizza overall and will still order from there, but it lacks the little something extra it used to have. -

Pizza is good, but the "special" is not that special. They used to allow you to have their "special" on the 18" pizza with one topping. Now it seems they're strict and only allow cheese. Tasty pizza, but not a special deal on a thin crust with cheese. Pizza by the slice borders on awful.
Regarding non-pizza items... pasta is boring and costs too much, fries are gross, sandwiches/burgers seem to vary day to day - sometimes I've had a big, juicy burger on a nice, fresh bun with lots of toppings, and other times I've had a small, dry burger on a very stale bun (ended up tossing the bun and bumming some wheat bread from my roommate) with nothing but a piece of lettuce. Wings aren't good, but could be worse.
Don't ever even think of ordering the "fried chicken." Do Shake 'n Bake instead. Trust me, you won't be sorry... especially when you pick up and realize they didn't include half of the sides they promised on the menu... and that the fried chicken is a poor man's Shake 'n Bake.
I'd give them 1 star if the thin crust pizza wasn't as good as it is. -

I'm giving Villa May 5 stars, which may seem a bit crazy at first, but hear me out. They do not have the best pizza, it's really good, but better exists. What I love about them are the quick delivery times, the friendly drivers, and the friendly people on the phone. Numerous times I've called in for delivery, placed an order, and they point out that I could save a bunch of money with a small change to my order. I literally just saved $10 and got more pizza thanks to their friendly staff.
They could have let me stick with my order and never told me about their special, but they didn't. Honesty, solid customer service, and consistency is why I'm giving them a 5. If you want to be sure you're getting a good deal, in a timely manner, and getting a pretty damn good pizza go with these guys. They never disappoint. -

They told us (after 1.5 hours) that the driver was on the way, and that the manager was gone. 2 hours later, no pizza. Hmmm... So we cancelled and walked down the street for Thai! I guess it is unfair to put a rank of 1-start since we never actually got pizza, but 2-stars seems fair.
They are on my no-way list, but I would have tried them again if when we called they said, "We are running really behind due to someone being out sick (or stoned perhaps), so we suggest that unless you can wait 2 hours for it that you order from someone else but please try us again later" -
Review from Disa J.
Chicago, IL
Very nice folks making decent thin crust pizza. This is a great place as standby neighborhood pizza. It's not NYC-style thin crust. I know Chicago doesn't truly have that sort. it's a little more than $3 for a slice where the cheese slides off but on Saturday I got a free drink with it. I don't like soda so it didn't much matter to me. I imagine cheese doesn't slide off a whole pie. I'll order a pizza delivered one day and update the review. I liked the flavor fine, so you can rely on this place being a friendly neighborhood joint.

I like Villa May a lot and it's my go-to neighborhood carry out place since I live down the street. If I moved away I wouldn't miss it but I do like it.
The employees are always polite and the pizza is ready for pick up in the promised 20 minutes. One time I ordered a 14" with 2 toppings and the guy told me that I should just get an 18" with 2 toppings because it was their special that night and it was cheaper. Thanks pizza dude! One time when I walked in to pick up another employee said to me "Do you want a bottle of soda?" when I said no thanks he said "I'll just give it to you. Here." Sweet! Thanks pizza guy. Mommy had some nice RC and Rum that night.
They also sell pizza slices and a drink for $3.25, and the slices are HUGE. -

The cheese is incredible here and so is the sauce. While your waiting for your pizza you can watch their big flat screen and won't miss the game or sitcom. We eat here once a week for the 3.00 pizza slice and drink special. Delicious to the taste if you are into the big oven baked pizza and thin crust.

Firstly, good customer service, it's what makes me tick, roll and jump up and down. Now, granted that this is a small pizza place, I appreciated that they didn't treat me like cattle like big chains tend to do.
Both guys there were pretty nice when me and my wife walked in. We ordered a thin crust Cheese Pizza, which was pretty good indeed. My wife ordered a house salad which came pretty quickly. Before we left, the guy asked if we wanted refills. There was no need to ask.
One other perk is that is has an HDTV in there (about 42") that plays pretty normal stuff (NBC, ABC, what not). It also has a neighborhood feel with all the pictures of family and/or customers that they have posted. -

I'm an East Coast Transplant and was told this was the place to get my New Yrok Style fix on the north side. Whom ever told me this was very wrong. It's just crappy Chicago Thin Crust. It's not a dripping with Grease, fold it in half and go to heaven slice I can get on the corner with a soda for $3 in New York.
I have found great pizza in Chicago that is close to the pizza I know from home but they are all to far from Lincoln Square to deliver.
Don't be fooled, the people here are lovely and kind, the delivery driver was fast and also very kind, but the pizza was ok, not what I wanted. -

I was home tonight, not feeling too well. I had a little stomach disagreement with lunch and canceled my plans for the night. Staying in I had a friend drop on by to keep me company as I recovered. Well later on we both got hungry. Now obviously I wasn't about Thai or Mexican, but probably against better judgment we went with pizza. I know, I know, not the wisest choice, but I figured safe enough... and with no food in the house.. I was starving.
I ordered about 8:20pm... It got there before 9pm... I guess it helps that I don't live less than a half a mile away. Like Colleen C I got a free 1 liter of RC. We opened up our package to see the steaming pizza, she was excited... my stomach was asking me, "Are you sure about this?" I took it slow. The thin crust was good, the best? No. Flakey crust, sauce was good, good amount of toppings. Best yet, my stomach though grumbly kept it down. I have plenty of leftovers, I look forward to munching on them.... -

Villa May's pizza is above average for the area. The thin crust is nothing special, but the stuffed is really where they excel. While the pizza is good, the buffalo wings are what keep us coming back. You can't beat them for the price and flavor anywhere in the area. They mail out coupons pretty often too, so be sure to give them a shot just to get on the mailing list.

As I write this review, I am munching on leftovers (two scrumptious edge pieces and a slightly-soggy-but-still-delicious center piece) from yesterday's Villa May delivery order. If only pizza could be my muse for every review...
Last night, I was simply along for the ride as my friend decided where to order food -- I was on his turf -- so this place sounded as good as the next. It'd been a long day and I just wanted food, and I'm out of my comfort zone ordering anything but deep dish.
(Side note: I was recently involved in a somewhat heated New York- vs. Chicago-style pizza debate, and I heard it said that any pizza not cut into squares wasn't even worth discussing. Whoa.)
Not even an hour after ordering, the pie arrived, still piping hot -- a true test of delivery pizza. And...in a bag? Whathafa. Yes, our pizza came in a bag. If I'd fetched that thing from the door, it would have buckled and wound up on the floor. I don't know how to deal with pizza that doesn't arrive in a box, man!
We ordered an obscenely large pizza to ensure we'd have leftovers, and though I doubted this decision at first, I'm certainly not regretting it now. Hell, it may even be better the second time around! I did some damage last night, but I practically INHALED those leftovers.
My half had fresh spinach, Italian sausage and pepperoni. Add that to perfectly crunchy, flaky crust and just-sweet-enough sauce...pizza heaven.
I want more. Bring me another bag, sir!
The old Paige (like, yesterday) would have given this place five stars, but I'm trying to be more judicious with those. Sigh.Listed in: Pizza, whaaaaaat!

Villa May recently moved to 1509 W. Lawrence, between Ashland and Clark. They have great prices and outstanding service and pizza that's a little above average, including slives for under $2.50. The menu is quite large, but I've mostly just had the pizza. Much friendlier service than the usual Chicago business - these people don't seem to have a pole shoved way up their ass as seems to be the common local practice.

i love this place for many reasons, but first and foremost it's the deep dish pizza that keeps me coming back. it might sound a little off, but i used to get a small deep dish with double mushrooms and it would put me on cloud nine. the deep dish pies are great. the thin crust is all right, but nothing to go out of your way for. of course, grabbing that single slice of cheese on the way home from the train when you just need those four bites to satiate a pang is defintely a must.
yeah, the place is not much to write about. basically a room with a window into the kitchen. the flipped over tables and rolled up floor runners are somewhat off-putting. but i don't care. the guy who runs the place is one of the nicest, happiest guys running a restaurant that i've ever met. he's the quintessential pizza guy. and when i used to live in the neighborhood and pass by the joint with my dog he'd stop me so he could come out and give my dog a treat... every time. how cool is that? definitely someone i wish only the most prosperous of futures for.
there's a chicago pizza and giordano's on the same street now.... and he's still holding his own. i'm glad to see that. i like to see an independent making it against those bigger names. do yourself and your neighborhood a favor and give him some business before ravenswood begins to look like every other neighborhood in the city. what's with every neighborhood needing the exact same shops and restaurants? -

If you are in or near Lincoln Square and want deep dish pizza, go with Villa May. I have tried pizza places all over this neighborhood and I always go back to Villa May. The pizza is so good and the toppings are fresh. The pizza is a little on the salty side for my taste, but it still far surpasses Giordano's, Pizza D.O.C. or Chicago Pizza. The people at Villa May are always nice and delivery is fast!

Villa May is a staple in my neighborhood. It's the first place I'd recommend if you're jonsin' for a slice of pizza for dinner or if you just can't decide if you want pasta or a salad or catfish. This place has a pretty wide variety of foods on the menu, and it all comes with a very standard, nosurpriseshere sort of flavor. They have a daily combo pizza, and I believe about 3 out of 7 days have a vegetarian-friendly pizza. I recommend calling ahead if you want anything that isn't a slice of pizza, though, because you'll have to wait around in the dingy little entry for at least 20 min. while they cook it. Plus side: they have Donkey Kong.

I was impressed by this pizza. We got a 16" pepperoni pizza delivered in less time than they estimated. The crust was thin, but not too thin, and flavorful. It could have been a little more moist. The sauce was good - a little spicy/tangy. We also ordered a salad and this is why my rating went from 4 stars to 3. I know it's a pizza place, but how hard is it to use fresh lettuce?
