I've eaten at Villa Barone several times and I can honestly say I've never had a bad meal. From the bread to dessert, everything is awesome. The last time me and my wife ate there we started with the mozzarella tower which is awesome. There is just something about the combination of fresh mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, prosciutto, and roasted red peppers that gets me all hot and bothered.
For dinner, my wife got the Veal Cassadrino(it's veal, crab, and shrimp done in a lemon creme sauce) and I ordered one of the specials- a filet with lump crab meat in a Gorgonzola creme sauce. I'm not sure who is responsible for the sauces, but both dishes made me want to shoot in my pants!!! Defiantly worth every penny. Make sure you bring a bottle of wine, as collingswood is a dry town.
The two stars apparently mean "Meh. I've experienced better." And that's exactly how I felt about lunch at Villa Barone. It wasn't at all bad, but there is better Italian food out there. The gnocchi was chewy and tasteless (is it ever anything else? maybe I've set my hopes to high for this dish) and the ravioli was good -- but then, I rarely have bad ravioli.
Service was fast, but we were one of two tables in the entire restaurant. And while I know that wait staff are required to be on the floor and attentively watching diners at all times, it's really unnerving when three or four of them (and a hostess) stare at you.
I chose Villa Barone as the location for some of my college crew to get together for dinner on Saturday night. The decision was based partly on the affordable prices but mostly on the ability for us to get a little rowdy without being asked to leave. We were seated promptly upon arrival, which was great considering the restaurant was crowded. We had a bottle or two of wine to each person, plus a flask of vodka (one of the girls is allergic to wine--bummer, right?!). Our server kept our bottles rotating through the meal. Wine glasses were never empty for more than a few seconds, which was fab.
For the first few minutes, we all sat staring at the plates of olive oil and spices--it wasn't until our drinks were delivered and orders placed, that someone requested bread for dipping. (Okay, it was me. You know I love some bread.) After that, our bread baskets flowed for the rest of the meal. And that meal was de-lish! We started off with a tower of mozzarella, which was wrapped in prosciutto, fried calamari that came with two types of dipping sauces, fried mozzarella with capers and a fantastic tomato-based sauce and bruschetta. All four starters were fantastic, and provided more than enough food for our party of seven to share.
Everyone seemed happy with their dinner selections as well. By the time my rigatoni and vodka sauce arrived, I was already pretty full, so I didn't get too far into the plate o' carbs before me. What I did have, however, was rich and delicious. After a couple shared desserts and a few cups of coffee, we called it a night.
Should we end up having another get together in my neck of the woods again, chances are high that we will return to Villa Barone, for the group-friendly aspect. One observation: the restaurant is also family-friendly, and there were a couple kids running around which was bothersome to my friends on the other side of the table. Luckily, I was far enough away and a few glasses deep so I didn't really notice.
I was treated to lunch at the Villa as a welcome to my new job. There were about 15 of us, and while they really probably should have grouped our tables together differently, everyone had a good time.
The bread... OH THE BREAD!! I could eat it all day. Fresh baked and omg-delicious. So much for my New Year's Resolution. Most people chose paninis, but I went for the gusto and had the fettucini w/crab and spinach. GOOD CALL. lololol. The servings are two-meal huge, but the food is delicious, so I forced mine down. The normal people took doggy bags home.
Villa Barone's red sauce is my absolute favorite! They always have extensive meat and fish specials (though I've never tried them), and their gnocchi and eggplant dishes are my favorite from any Italian restaurant. Also, each dinner comes with a salad and some amazing warm bread.
Unfortunately, their 3 large dining areas are always very loud. When you're in the mood for a quiet date, it's not the best atmosphere. During the summer, I often prefer to wait for an outdoor table, mostly because the town of Collingswood is the perfect evening setting.
Don't forget that it's BYO!
One of my newest finds for Italian food. Located in Collingswood, New Jersey, Villa Barone serves true Southern Italian cuisine in a comfortable setting. Bring your family and friends and start with Asparagus Bella Nonna with garlic & oil, topped with prosciutto and melted sharp provolone, or try Insalata Mediterranean with shrimp, crabmeat, cherry tomatoes and marinated artichokes. Then choose from a cornucopia of traditional, specialty, or baked pasta dishes, wood burning brick oven pizzas, or quite a few entrée options that are served with either chicken or veal. So come join the family for "a taste of the old country"!
Villa Barone used to be my favorite restaurant in Collingswood. A cute BYO with a great staff where the food was always top notch. Something was considerably different on my last visit, and I can't help but think it has something to do with one of the chef's leaving to open Bistro Di Marino.
The Bread remains fantastic. Deep down, part of me wishes I could make an entire meal out of it.
The Entrees have gone down significantly in quality. Our food came out overcooked, bland, and generally disgusting. My dining partner's food was actually so bad that she \had to send it back, a first for both she and I. After stealing a bite I couldn't blame her. Our waiter was surprisingly rude about it. Rather than being apologetic, he felt the need to grill her about it and then kind of shrugged and gave us a rude "Whatever" as he took it back to the kitchen.
While this used to be one of my favorites, I won't be going back. There's better food to be had in Collingswood.
I ate at Villa Barone for the first time this week and absolutley loved it. The service is great and so is the food. I must say that the bread and the oil dip served first is by far the best bread I've ever had! I was almost too full off of the bread to eat my meal. I had the Linguine, crabmeat and spinach and it was fantastic. Most places hardly give you and crabmeat with your meal but not here, it was loaded with meat. Villa Barone is BYOB just like almost every place in Collingswood because it's a dry town, so bring a bottle of wine or a small case of your favorite beer and you won't be disappointed!
I have visited Villa Barone probably about thirty times in five years, and each time, I was astounded by how delicious the food is, time after time. The portions are generous, the red sauce is zesty but not spicy, the cream sauces are thick and not milky, and the pastas and meats they're prepared with have yet to disappoint.
What is unfortunate, however, is the restaurant's rule of no substitutions. You can't substitute a soup for a salad, for instance. And not only are they strict about this, they seem to be very taken aback by any questioning of a possible substitution. So for those who are totally content to order exactly as is, and never vary from the menu whatsoever, you've found an Italian restaurant that you're sure to enjoy. But for those, like me, who sometimes need to eliminate an ingredient (due to allergies or just plain dislike) or wish to do something a little different (the salad comes with dressing and they won't take it off, so I prefer soup as I do not like dressing), just proceed with a little caution.
It's also a BYOB, so if you would like to have some wine with your dinner, make sure you come armed and ready with your own!
Villa Barone is a nice Italian restaurant in the center of Collingswood. Definitely BYO, my favorite part of Collingswood.
I've been here several times. The food is good, not amazing. My main problem with the food is it's all so heavy, laden with creamy sauces. It's hard to find anything light for a summer evening. My husband has also had the brick oven pizza, while okay, it doesn't even compare to a place like Tacconellis.
The decor is a bit dated, I feel like my grandmom opened a restaurant. However, we have always had exemplary service, and the food is reasonably priced.
I have not been here in awhile so I am not as up to date on the current menu. It is a local, freshly prepared Italian joint. If you like Italian, but hate the idea of Olive Garden, this is your place. Make sure to BYO if you intend to drink since Collingswood is a dry town. The food is excellent and the ambiance is nice. The attire selection needs to be slightly expanded. I think "dress casual" should be an option and if it were, I would have selected that for this place.
I live in Colls & have frequented VB since they opened about 10 years ago. My most recent visit may be my last - the food was average at best and the decor is dated and dirty (when was the last time they cleaned the wall decorations?) Service was always one of their hallmarks but when my wife asked to substitute soup instead of the salad (and we would have paid for it if necessary) she was told, "Oh no we can't substitute anything". Some restaurants improve with age - others become complacent......and then obsolete.
Great place to eat .Food is great .I ate there many times food is always good.Another plus you can bring your own wine .I even had a party there great service.
Villa Barone is one of our favorites. It is located on a section of Haddon Ave where a bunch of new little restaurants are popping up. The food is excellent. I can personally vouch for the ziti with vodka blush sauce, awesome! They also have outdoor seating which is kind of nice depending on the weather. Don't forget to bring your own wine!
