Review Highlights
One of my favorite bars in NYC. Cozy space with great music.
I love this place. Always a great place to have fun with friends.
It's intimate enough to not feel like you're drowning in a sea of bodies. It's got fun music. And the mood is nice.
You've got free time for a drink? Check it.
Do you have any friends that moonlight as strippers?
I didn't know i had so many until i journeyed to the back room of Vig bar and took it over. As the dance party ensued, they found their inner pagan and push the men to the side. What resulted was a loosely dressed orgy of women grinding to lady gaga.
Otherwise the drinks were reasonable, nothing special. The bar was small in the front (crowded) and a private room in back. (empty) but no bar.
The waitress seemed to mix in well with my pagan pals, not wearing much herself and also having no use for men.
all in all it was an average night at a croded bar turned strip club.
On Fridays and Saturdays, this place is butts to nuts crowded; you can't even move. There always a bunch of people outside smoking, talking, singing, etc because its too crowded in there. There's also often a line outside to get in. I have no idea why. The other reviewers are pretty spot on about the clientele; the crowd seems pretty b&t. The music is some 80s stuff that's cranked up like it's some sort of club.
Go to Sweet & Vicious across the street.
This is a great spot on Thrs to Sat. The DJ on Thurs night is usually awesome. The bartenders are usually very friendly and welcoming. I still miss Ron though.........
Warm and laid-back on a Tuesday night, Vig becomes a suffocating trap during the weekend, when the zombies seize the place.
Remember Planet Terror?
A friend had a birthday party here recently.
Hightlights:
- I like banquettes and, since we were here earlyish and had reserved, we got one.
- The DJ wore a cow print coat, blue eye shadow and a floor length denim skirt. The music was pretty good too.
Lowlights:
- A group of entitled divas showed up and tried to take over our reserved area, even though both we and the waitress told them on several occasions that we had reserved. They launched dagger eyes at us for the rest of the night.
- Some chick wasn't wearing panties and i totally saw her va-jay-jay. GROSS!
- By the time we left, it was so crowded it had to have been a fire hazard. We literally had to push our way out as the crowed was wall to wall.
- When we got outside there were at least 40 people waiting to get in. Why???
Never again.
I think it's weird when there's a line up to go inside a bar. It's a bar, people, not a club. Even if the bar has a DJ. It's still a bar.
On the upside, HUGE drinks. They charge the typical Manhattan prices for cocktails, but the drinks are super-sized, so that's a lot a bang for your buck. I'm rather fond of 80s music and such, so I loved the DJ.
The downside, it got incredibly crowded to the point where moving in any direction was just about impossible. The vibe of the place was a bit too preppy post-collegiate frat boy party mentality.
One big-fat-one-syllable word............. SUCKS!!
The bouncer gave me shit about my barely noticeable chest hair... why was he staring at my bust in the first place??? He let me in anyway... phew!!
Drinks were actually moderately priced (about $10 each), but there's a $30 minimum for credit card charges, which sucks for those who hate carrying cash (ME!)... Thankfully, I drank over 3 drinks! ;-)
The music was whack!!... no, really!! ...DJs who play oldies and songs from 90's the entire time belong at Culture Club!!
Despite all of that, I had a great time because I was with people I really enjoy; otherwise, the place sucks!
A note to the straighties... if you wanna have a great time dancing, go to Southside (see my review).
The owner of this business must read these reviews as they appear to be trying to address Joleen Z.'s comment of the place smelling like "foot". They had Glade aromatherapy scattered about, I am guessing in an attempt to take the foot-like odor out of this place.
Horribly average lounge/bar spot that seems to have a DJ at certain times (they did not this past Saturday evening) as well as your typical lounge low slung leather benches, etc.
This is a solid 2 star place but they get an extra start for serving pounders of Bud Heavy for $6.00 a bottle. For the uninitiated those are 16oz bottles of Budweiser.
It's a very buzzy place, definitely. That is only if you can overlook the "suffocating" quality of this small bar (as sb mentioned in the earlier reviews).
I managed to enjoy my time there, because I was sitting down on the wall couch (where crown doesn't spill) and we reserved a table for b-day drinks. But my friends sitting across on ottomans - the crowd was literally sitting on top of their heads.
DJ is alright (a character - I don't know if he is always there) - he mixed things up well (or maybe it was the 5th Hennessy that did it :)
Don't go on weekends, it is SUPER crowded.
Nothing all that special about this place. It wasn't my choice to come here, but we needed a spot within a 2 foot radius in which to grab a drink, and wait for a friend of the friend we were hanging out with to arrive.
Totally mixed crowd (all ages, all kinds), and why was their a bouncer there, and why was I having to listen to what the heck he was saying about no men getting in without women.
Wow...seriously, for this place? They drive a hard bargain. But again, why was there a bouncer for this tiny bar? Anyway, fortunately for us, we were 3 girls, one guy.
Entered, had a drink, had a seat, then left.
P.S. Can they get some new speakers or something. What's with the popping noises every two seconds?
Crowded as fuck on a Friday night. Line of about 6 people outside at the door. The party was okay the dj was playing some older top 40 dance songs. Def. had that college student vib going on here with young people ordering Belvedere etc. My friend ran into someone she knew from DC and spoke to him like the entire time we were there lol. Hard to move around let alone dance in this place though people certainly tried. Just a spot I stumbled across after a movie at Sunshine!
i've been here once for a birthday party, and when i showed up (past 1 am), the bar wasn't too crowded, so we had the front area to ourselves. great music, good drinks...fabulous time.
as i had such a good time the first time, i decided to give it another shot to see if it really was the place or just the other people partaking in my dance party. lo and behold, i had another fun night. they play good music, and provide a laid back atmosphere, where you can just dance around, be silly, and have an all-around great time!
Quote the bouncer to my (Jewish) female friend upon inspecting her Canadian ID: "Hmm... you look like a chubby, nappy half negro in this picture."
As funny as the door staff may be, it doesn't make up for this place. The only reason I came was because my friend told me that the hot girls who live above him were throwing a party there with a ton of their friends. SCORE.
I got there around 12:30. I waited in line. I get inside to find that it is beyond over crowded, and whats this? The crowd is all 28-35. That is all well and good if you're of that demographic, but at a ripe 22 years of age, I felt out of place.
It was crowded. The female friend I had brought with me was accosted 3 times by lecherous older men. The female patrons were cold and unwelcoming to my advances (what can I say? I like older women.)
It was crowded. I give this place two stars instead of one because the DJ who was on was actually playing some good stuff. Any night that includes hearing BBD's "Poison" being played at random can't be a complete loss.
Did I mention it was crowded? And you know that rule that hot girls come in flocks and hang out with other hot girls? Not true in the case of the group we were meeting. Ouch.
15 minutes were all it took for me to get my fill of this bar. Go if you're of the appropriate demographic or if the line at R Bar is too long.
Ugh, Vig Barf.
This place is not cool...first of all, this place can comfortably fit 100 meatheads, not 150, and the place was over capacity on the Friday night I strutted in to meet up with some friends. As my date so eloquently put it--"this place smells like foot."
Went to meet up with a friend and that is what made the night--i truly believe its the people you are with, not the place you are at, but the venue can definitely help! And Vig bar is not the choice venue of my Friday night dancing plans with my ladies.
They get a star for the jams--great music to get your cha-cha on. BUT, let's be real. A good playlist does not a good bar make! They get the other star because the bartender gave me a bottle of champagne "on him" to share with my dancing queens. If not for his kind gesture, the Vig would be one starring it all the way. If I wanted to chat it up with a monotone banker, I can just go to Barna.
If you're downtown, don't get viggy with it. it's not worth it. Yawn!
Small venue, but it was great not to have to deal with all the ish you would typically have to deal with at most NYC lounges/clubs. I had a great time here. Stopped by around 10, and the waitress helped us reserve a couple tables which worked out great since some of our friends came later and had a place to hang out.
Vig Bar is nothing special, but I'd come back again if I was in town.
I once attempted to get into Vig Bar on a Saturday night, but the line at the door detered me. However, I went back the following Saturday to find a more neighborhood feel. The place was still pretty empty around 11:30, but there was a decent mix people, mostly there in groups of 2-3 friends. I enjoyed the DJ and the laidback atmosphere, but definitely want to check out the space when it is more busy. However, this is a very tight spot, so I will have to time it just right.
Vig Bar seems like it would be a really cool place to hang out on a weeknight when it's more low-key. On a Saturday, packed with birthday parties, not as fun. However, I give it props for good music, easy door (although there is a line late into the night around 11:30pm-12:00am), and good bar service.
Had a fun time here -- I think it really makes a difference if you can score a seat and watch the crowd get drunk.
Was not too impressed the night I went. I like a good crowd, but this place was just too crowded for what it is. Seemed like a lot of wealthy suburban post-grads and not so much hipsters, but maybe it was just the night. All I know is I had to fend off a stalker thanks to my friends who thought it was funny to leave me hanging.
Really? This place? It sucked and the people there were sloppy drunk by midnight and that's really not a good sign. Every single guy was wearing a white striped button-up...but one guy's had the word "DANGEROUS" printed on the back. Not joking. It went really well with the bald spot he combed over.
Possibly the strongest long island I ever had ($11). Crazy crowded w/ a line to get in on Saturday night. Dece music. Bouncer was enforcing a vague male:female ratio (what is this, a frat party?)
came here @ 3 am in the morning looking to keep the buzz alive. Nice place, great music, especially when the played "Creep" by Radiohead. Ordered two amstels and a maker's on the rocks; it only cost 20 bucks!! whoo hoo!! no cover and cool bouncer!! :) what an awesome night!
I don't think this place is as bad as what everyone is saying. Came here last night. Yes it's quite crowded, but if you can score a table, it's actually not bad. Music is pretty good, there's no fuss getting in, and the crowd is more down to earth peeps. I'd come again.
Bunch of boners. I was less than impressed when our crew popped in here. I think we may have stayed for one drink and all of us were ready to jump ship 3/4 the way through it. One of the reviews says a bunch of hipsters, but I certainly didn't see any. The bar was completely crowded and I had to fight for air amidst all the preppies. Oof. Get. Me. Out. Of. Here.
I have to admit that the reason why I didn't give this bar five stars is because I prefer dive bars over trendy, crowded places... However, a friend recommended this place to us since it was not too far from Stanton Social, where I was throwing a 30th birthday dinner party for my boyfriend. We had originally planned to have the after-dinner party at Revolver, but then realized the week before, Revolver is closed. So, Thursday night before the slated date of the party, my boyfriend stopped in and Vig Bar agreed to reserve the back room for our party that Saturday. We showed up around 9:30 or so... the back room was reserved for us.. the bar was pretty dead... several drinks later... I ventured to the front room and the place was beyond packed! Ladies, I never had to wait for the bathroom (even though there were only 2 or 3 stalls, can't remember) and the music was fun too!
Vig is a great place for a get together with friends or a venue for a special occasion. But only if you reserve the back room. The front room gets very crowded and uncomfortable. No one really dances at this bar although the music does try to get you moving. Vig is big on 80's and Top 40. If you have the back room reserved, a cocktail waitress comes by every so often and brings you your drinks so you don't have to go to the bar. Overall, we were very comfortable at Vig and it was very nice to hang around with Parsons alumni and the birthday girl. Interesting people flock to Vig but definitely not "hipsters" and thank God, because I can't stand "hipsters". I think I liked Vig because we were in the back room. I'm sure if I was subjected to the front, I wouldn't have enjoyed myself as much. People come to Vig just to have a drink and enjoy themselves. It's unpretentious.
Vig Bar is a great time. The drinks are not badly priced and there is a live DJ but no cover! There were a bunch of hipsters dancing to the eclectic mix, but other than that it was a pretty diverse crowd. The front room was quite small, but there was a back room that would be perfect for birthdays and private parties. When the DJ played Baltimora's one hit wonder, Tarzan Boy, it was hilarious enough for me to decide I was quite in love with the place.
VIG is a small and friendly bar located in the crucial corner of Elizabeth and Spring. On the weekends, this bar transforms to a college bar though there is no college nearby. This calls for some investigation. What makes me so happy about this bar is the number of times I have beat people at Connect Four. The staff is all very friendly is willing to work with your needs, such as being able to bring in your own games.
came here a few years ago for my then roomie's 21st bday. the place was okay...it was SUPER crowded. the back room there was cool though. lots of creepy dudes there
