First off, Didier is the best bartender in Portland, hands down.  With that said, i have mixed feelings about this place.  If Didier is behind the bar, it's worth a few drinks.

I had an event here.  30 people.  They have a weird system, where you pay for the food per person.  In my experience (I was a banquet manager for a large 4 star hotel) you buy the food you buy, the amount of people coming do not matter.  They charged us more because a few extra people showed up.  They did not put any extra food out.

The person handling the particulars of the event was cold, and did not make us feel very welcome.  She seems like the kind of person who never owned a restaurant before.  She made a $200.00 mistake on our bill, and made me wait .5 an hour for it, while my guests where leaving for another bar.

The space is very nice.  Business wise, I don't understand this place.

I recently went to a birthday party here...and a fun time was had by all!  Vie de Boheme is a great space...very conducive to having an event and mingling.  I was in the mood for a sweet dessert wine, and the muscato hit the spot.  I didn't have any food, so I can't speak to that.  I have to deduct a star, since the live band was way too loud.  We were sitting in another room, and it was difficult to have a conversation.

First off, when you go to your table look at the menu and then step up to the bar to order. I saw a lot of people wait around and even if does say to do so on the menu you may overlook it.

I did a wine flight here for $10 and you get ten 1 oz. tastes. The wines were good but I was sad to see that they were not all from the area. I guess I wanted to learn more about local wines and counted on that being a choice.

The wines under their label are actually pretty good! At $22 a bottle you can't go wrong!

The service was REALLY slow. The guy was very nice however so I didn't get too annoyed but it was painful to wait in a nearly empty place.

I did not try any of the food but they have the standard fare. I did not see anyone else eat the food either so I can't even tell you if it looked good. There is a rad pie shop next door so you could always mod that place should you feel the need.

Would I come here again? Maybe. I wouldn't go out of my way.

Great place. The class was informative and the wines were nice.  I expected the appeitizers to be more upscale to compliment the enviornment but was disappointed.  Like all classes, we had a know-it-all but they handled her well.

Might go back to partake in the Salsa dancing that happens after.

I went there for appetizers and wine. I was pretty disappointed. Although the service was nice, the cheese and charcuterie plate felt like a safeway contribution. The wine was alright.

If you go for the music then you are probably in the right place. I am not much into Jazz although I can appreciate it on occasion, but and as soon as the music started that was all you could hear... even from the furthest table.

Not my vibe. Not my food. Best of luck to them but I won't be back.

My girlfriends and I have hit up Vie De Boheme's Salsa night several times now and it is tons of fun!  I first met Didier when he had his shop in Sellwood - what a charmer!  Ed - my favorite bartender always greets me with a smile (and usually a hug).  Last week was a special event with Bobby Torres ans his band (which included his daughter on vocals) so it wasn't the usual crowd.  My gripe with most salsa places is they are small, cramped and HOT - and not in a good way.  Not the case at Vie de Boheme.  There is always plenty of room to move here.  This is a great spot to meet a friend for a drink, grab a bite and people watch.

Good wine, excellent service, live music nightly what's not to love?

My husband and I purchased a Groupon for Vie de Boheme and we were excited to try it!  The wine was nice (we tried the Vie de Boheme label Merlot and Zinfandel) but the cheese and charcuterie plate (this was part of the Groupon deal) was frankly embarrassing.  Portland is known for its charcuterie, and even New Seasons is right down the street from Vie de Boheme, but they served a few slices of what tasted like Gallo salami, and that was it for the meat.

The cheese was also regular grocery store variety - sliced Swiss and pepper-jack, chunks of cheddar, a small disk of goat cheese, and a wedge of non-flavorful brie.  Add to this some mushy olives, and overripe grapes and you get the idea.    The best part of the plate were the six slices of toasted baguette and the Spanish peanuts.

I don't know if this is just what they serve Groupon holders, and if they put the "real" cheese and meats out for the regular customers, but it seems like the whole point of having a Groupon is to try a place and see what it is like.  Based on our experience we will NOT be back, and we will advise others not to go either.  The space is nice, the wine is fine, the live music/entertainment is nice, but appetizers tasted like they came from an old deli tray from Safeway.   I hope Vie de Boheme realizes that with a small improvement in the quality of their food they could make a huge impact with their customers, and I was sorry to be so let down.

I stopped into this place again for a glass of wine a couple of nights ago and it just keeps getting better!  They have a very nice food menu put together to compliment the wines, more artwork is up on the walls and they have an incredible lineup of talented musicians!  And did I mention cozy?  It is hard to be a large space and cozy at the same time but Vie de Boheme does it with aplomb.

Service is friendly and the owners and wine maker were around to answer questions.

In reply to the only negative review on here complaining about lack of table service, this is a wine bar..  When I go to a wine bar I don't expect people to wait on me, I just go to the bar and order.

As a previous fixture in Burdigala (wine bar which is now closed in Sellwood), I was excited, albeit a bit nervous, about what was in store with the new wine bar in SE Portland.

The new space (which resides in the old Roots Brewery) is gorgeous, well appointed, lots of seating (which as you might remember was at a premium at Burdigala), and good wines.  Not only are they making, and selling, their own label - there are also other bottles and vintages for sale as well.

It's not often I get the pleasure of attending an unofficial "soft" opening (before the official soft opening) - especially when you think there's GOT to be kinks, some stuff to work out, to improve, etc.  and how exciting it is to see the morphing into something amazing.  Well... really, nothing went wrong....in fact, everything was so impressive I still find it hard to believe they weren't completely open and operating for a long time.

Well done guys, well done.  I will be back, I will bring my friends, and I will become yet another fixture.

When you think of a wine bar...what comes to mind? A small cozy space with glasses being swirled atop wine barrels amidst hushed murmurs of evaluating and tasting? Well, that may be what you get when you go to MOST wine bars,  but Didier Sudre, at Vie de Boheme knows how to raise wine drinking to rock star status.

If you knew Didier from Burdigala in Sellwood, then you probably shed a tear with the rest of us when he closed the shop last June to pursue something different. Well...that something different is opening its doors officially on Wednesday (unofficially last weekend) and it is NOT to be missed.

Along with selling lots of great wine, Didier and his partners have launched their own label, Vie de Boheme, and it is good stuff. They took over the former Roots Brewery space, have two-tiered seating, a grand piano, lots of room for live music and ample space to get your groove on after the wine loosens your inhibitions. D says he's planning live music every night. Last Friday night we had the windows steamed before 9pm.

So, whether you're a taster, sipper, drinker, toe tapper, groove master, cheese nosher, or just interested in watching those who are...get into "La Vie" starting this Wednesday evening. (11/17) I can't wait.

Nice venue with live music from local artists and a decent wine collection. Service is friendly. If the doorwoman likes you she might even waive the cover charge. I didn't try the food but someone who ordered the pasta said it was just O.K. It would probably make sense to eat elsewhere before you come here.

Just like I said I didn't eat pie until Pacific Pie moved unto the 7th ave block between clay and hawthorne, I also said I didn't drink wine...until I discovered Vie de Boheme on the same block. Now, I'm a full fledged wino.  I've spent the summer stopping in to this place on Fridays, Sat, and Sundays after I close up shop to have a glass of wine and chill. It's lovely. I love the owners, I love the space, it's all around beautiful.  I've learned more about wine in the last three months then I ever thought I cared to know, and I'm looking forward to exploring reds as we move into fall.

My first impression as I entered Vie de Boheme was damn this is a huge space! After review of their menu I was left shocked, they were only offering 6 wines? It was then explained to me that this isn't just a wine bar but a full fledged winery. With that making more sense I was pleased to see a wine tasting room inside the city limits. Vie de Boheme has a large open floor plan with plenty of seating, a baby grand piano, stage area and bar. It's flanked by an elevated seating area on the street level. There is also a private room in their wine library located near the back of the space. For such a large venue I did feel the bar area was a bit small, especially considering there's no wait staff. This leaves the bar filling quickly, so you may have to use any defensive moves you know to place an order. They offer live music almost every night and as the crowds die down even encourage dancing or maybe they don't and we just broke the rules.

The wines use fruit sourced from the Columbia Valley with varietals such as Merlot, Cab Franc, Zinfandel and Cabernet. Although their tasting fee is quite high at $15 the wines themselves offered a great value with the highest bottle priced at $24.00. To me their standouts were the Merlot and Cab Franc. These weren't your usual big, punchy, fruit laden wines with no structure or finish, each showed a unique complexity not found in more typical examples. Their library offers a mix of wines from around the world including some reputable Oregon wineries. I had an opportunity to glance over their pricing sheet and found most to be very affordable. I didn't sample their food plates but saw they offered a range of choices depending on what was available. The owner Didier (sounds like D-D-A) was very welcoming, friendly and eager to help. So If you're looking for a less traditional wine tasting or just want to cut loose afterward Vie de Boheme is totally worth a look.

Great potential here to be a very cool wine bar with music, food and good wine.  I look forward to seeing this place blossom and diversify their offerings.  It is very comfortable and quite large.  Perfect venue for private parties or just sitting at the bar and sipping.

Vie de Boheme has decent ambience and had a comfortable feel. That is about where the positives end. We own a nearby business and thought we would pop over to the wine bar after work. They were fairly busy but certainly not slammed. With that said, we just could not get served. We sat for at least 20 minutes with staff walking by constantly (all 2 of them). They looked right at us many times but didn't seem to have any interest in actually serving us. I am willing to chock it up to confusion with a new business but we found it a bit odd. In addition, perhaps having some professional menus made would be a good idea. Using a very basic menu printed off a home computer may work in a sports bar, but not in a wine bar.

We wandered in here on a Thursday night, having seen that Dan Crother and the Singers Club was listed as the entertainment.  Mr. Crother turned out to be a terrific singer/pianist, and the 'club' appeared to be folks who show up with their own sheet music, who sing a few songs while Dan accompanies them.  They were all a delight, providing an evening of varied entertainment while we were checking out the wine and food, both of which turned out to be just ducky.  The cheese plate was more generous than expected, and had a very pleasant variety.  It wasn't the artisanal quality that you'd find at the Cheese Bar, but it was a perfect accompaniment to drinks and music.  The wines we sampled each had their own character, with the Cabernet Franc being our personal favorite.  Pours were generous, and the service, from a bartender who appeared to be Johnny Damon, circa 2004, was friendly and prompt.  And the setting, which I probably should have mentioned earlier, was a real highlight.  Vie de Boheme is a lovely space, with plenty of room to either find a table suitable for quiet chatting, or something more central, to be front and center with the music.  I've been noticing lighting lately, both when it's bad, and when it's good.  The lighting here is perfect - bright enough to allow you to see the entertainment and to read the menu, but soothing and romantic at the same time.  All in all, a really nice night out - soothing and tasty.  Oh - one thing to be aware of:  their web site has a calendar with entertainment listings, but it doesn't seem as well populated as a listing that you'll find on the home page of the site, scrolling down, on the right side of the page.
