This is my go-to place whenever visiting my family in the Richmond District of SF.
Top 10 reasons why Big Heart Video Cafe ROCKS my socks:
1) MOM n' POP and opened 24/7, 365 days a year (well..except for a few hours during Christmas). Who on EARTH do you know pours their heart and soul into a business for the sake of pure love for their customers? Exactly!
2) The food is ALWAYS served fresh and piping hot at a speed of lightening.
3) There's a variety of options to chose from -- ranging from american originals (burgers, breakfast options, sandwiches, calamari, pies, cakes, ice creams, soups made from scratch, salads, beer for less than $2!) and yes, EVEN Thai food - so you can have a side of Thai Ice Tea with your burger if you'd so prefer.
I particularly love coming here for breakfast. They have the best deals for breakfast platters ever (french toast, pancakes, sausages, chicken sausages, bacon, eggs always cooked perfectly, perfectly golden hashbrowns, and the list goes on and on and on).
4) There are plasma tv screens everywhere - so you can watch the news in the morning and movies at night.
5) You can rent DVD's from here - what a creative thought!
6) The waitresses/waiters here are so sweet, and if you come back often, they WILL remember your name! (At least..the waitresses during the day...I've yet to venture here passed 11pm...).
7) The hokey decor makes it so incredibly genuine! Vintage/old-school movie posters adorn all of the walls... constantly making me nostalgic of my childhood favorites.
8) I love coming in the morning for breakfast because everyone here is pretty much a regular and knows everyone's name -- it's like a diner version of "Cheers". =D
9) EPIC Milkshakes.
10) It's still here after 30-years. Same smiley owners. Still opened 24/7. 365 days a year. Tell me who can trump that?
I used to love going here, but the place is awful under its new management. While the food is the same, plain old basic diner food, they have gone from playing quality entertaining films of all genres to basically playing whatever the manager wants to watch.
I'd like to say this can be good, but when the manager has the viewing tastes of a 12 year old girl from Mississippi (no offense if you are 12 from Mississippi, but we probably don't like the same flicks), it doesn't fly with me anymore.
After sitting through a Miley Cyrus movie and some pedantic comedy featuring the guy better known as "Dangle" from "911 Reno" I couldn't take it any longer. I stood up and asked the other two tables if anyone would like to see something decent. The two groups of young men all raised their hands. After a brief discussion of what was available, I selected a couple of options that should have appealed to this crowd then gave the movie to the owner. She said, "yeah yeah, sure when this one is over."
She lied. The next movie was some D-list romantic comedy. She should just skip the pretense and throw on her soaps.
While I love the idea of a place you can watch big screen movies 24 hours a day while you eat your pancakes, I can no longer patronize management that doesn't actually care to cater to it's customers.
Video Cafe, a late night spot the heart of San Francisco's Richmond district, which over the years, I have developed a profound love and hate relationship with. Sometimes, after eating here, I've vowed never to return, only to come back several months later after some bar-hopping in the area. One time I got food poisoning from one of their burgers, and swore I would never eat here again, only to return again after some drunken debauchery weeks later. Another time, after a crazy guy with tourettes terrorized the restaurant, and I decided then and there to close and seal the chapter of my life that involved any patronage to this restaurant, about a year later...I was back. And of course, drunk.
As you may have noticed, the sufficient condition needed for this place to be perceived as barely tolerable/borderline decent is that you are, of course, drunk. This makes Video Cafe not only the one of the best eating choices after a night of failing to secure a booty call at a clubs, but the ONLY place to redeem your failed, drunken night with nice juicy, grilled tuna and cheese sandwich with fries.
Case in point: this joint is open TWENTY FOUR f&*king hour a day. Sure, you could hop your drunk ass over to Denny's in J-Town at 3am, but can you count on Denny's to play for you Harry Potter or the Transporter, and assortment of other mediocre films while you eat yo franch fryes and much on yo burger? I think not.
Second, the prices at Video Cafe are reasonable. You can get pretty stuffed for about 7-8 bucks, and considering this place is not backed up by a multi-million dollar corporation like Denny's, and the entire place waited 24 hours a day by an elderly white woman (who seems to run on an energizer battery), how much cheaper should a business like Video Cafe go? Naught.
Third, the service is acceptable. You stumble in, you order, you get your food, you comatose and pay and leave. While I am aware that the service can at times suck ass, where else are you gonna find people who are willing to wipe your ass at 4am in the f*&king morning and give you a side of fries with it? I think it's totally unfair to rate this place down significantly because you had shitty service at 3am in the morning. Your standards for places like Video Cafe, which operates around the clock, should be totally different from regular restaurants that open for 8 hours a day, don't you think?
Lastly, the food is very decent. I always order a grilled-something sandwich with fries, and have generally never had any complaints about the food here, outside of a single isolated incident years ago. If you order a burger, get it well-done. The salad sucks, so I always substitute fries with it and it totally warrants the additional .75 cent charge. I hear the ice cream at the place is delicious, but it's not my cup of tea in the early hours of the morning. In sum, food is solid.
The main draw to Video Cafe is not the food, nor the service; both of which are average at best, but the location, hours, and to some extent, the novelty of the place. Weighing the negatives against the positives and taking into consideration the different standards that Video Cafe should be judged on, and also acting on overwhelming personal bias, I am inclined to give Video Cafe 4 whole stars. So support local businesses, stimulate the local economy, boycott your drunken food cravings away from corporate entities, and eat at Video Cafe. And If you disagree, then, well you can always whore yourself out to Denny's.
Been going here for years. Food is good. Service could come off rude at times but for the most part they are friendly. Changed a bit over the years but my one concern is there is never any parking.
Last night was a meteor shower but after standing outside on twin peaks for two hours, we got hungry.
So we decided to drive around in the mood for burritos but as we drove by this place, we saw a 24 hour sign and right then and there we did a whole turn around and went in.
In the front, I thought was kinda iffy but going inside there were plasma tv's and movies posters all over the place. The waitress was nice. and the menu (thai me up was funny) was yummy and decent prices!
I got the the original burger with fries. my other roommates got the half chicken, chicken burger, veggie burger and cup of soup (which was cream of mushroom at the time yum!)
The place is fun to eat at and I would actually go back for late night munchies. oh and the movie? it was chronicles of narnia prince caspian :)
This place is really unique they have plasma TV's everywhere but not too imposing on your table
One time i went on a late night food search and found this place,
Wow! they were watching a R movie around 12 30 and the place was packed but there was a kind of silence and intrigue into the action movie. The prices were diner average had a larg selection of good stuff and the service was fine. looked like a popular spot with people of all ages in there.
If there's ever locals in a spot at midnight then its a good sign
Woo video cafe i hope my next visit is as good.
Three stars is the best I can do for this place... all because of their service...
I was out at 1am, looking for a late-night restaurant, and came across Video Cafe. It was pretty packed with lots of people, so I figured it must be good. When walking in, all you see is a large display of movies leading you to think that you can rent videos. Then we got seated and ordered our food.
1 - We waited for maybe almost 20 minutes for our food which is way too long. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt since there were a lot of customers so I didn't give the red flag yet.
2. I have to say the food was delicious... I got the BBQ half chicken, and it exceeded my expectations. HOWEVER..... (which leads to my next critique)...
3. Service was DISAPPOINTING! Our check took so long to get, the waitress didn't even come by to see how we're doing, and I couldn't simply ask for a bottle of ketchup for my fries. Even asking for a to-go box was impossible. Now I have to give the red flag.
So overall food was great, movie playing on the TV's were nice, but service was bad... I like to give second chances, so maybe I'll check it out again but I might just have to rely on take-out next time.
The food is pretty good, depends what you get but the price is expensive. I love this place because i can come here late in the night because it's 24 hours and they always have to awesome movies playing. I once spent 3 hours in there watching the movies with my friends and doing homework, great if you have time to spare at night and don't feel like going home.
Haven't heard so many "yes sirs" and "no mams" since Catholic school. Though not a single piece of memorabilia that adorns the wall is from the past decade and nine years (is that nearly a score?) the six or so LCD's that line the walls and halls are refreshingly (hi) def.
The pie was warm, the ice cream cold, the place is 24 what more could you ask for?
Ok can I title this review: "Video Killed The Radio Star?" Seriously like the beat and uniqueness of the song describes this place. By the way, I like the Ben Folds Five version the best of this song! Can this be a music review site too?
Honestly, you don't come here for the food. Like, no. You don't come here for exceptional service, like no. And no, you don't come here to rent movies. No, that's for netflix you guys. You come here for the strange and one-of-a-kind experience and it's convenience and that it's one of the few 24/7 joints in the city and that you can laugh at the scattered movie posters along the walls that simply don't make any sense.
The food really isn't that bad here. If you want just a burger, then you get an average burger. If you want spaghetti and meatballs then you go to Gaspares or Ernestos. And if you want ice cream you go to Joe's down the street. But if there is nothing else open at 12am or for other random moments, then this might be the spot for you. It's just ordinary and what it should taste like at a place like this. Last time I was here I tried the spring rolls. I highly recommend this for an appetizer you guys. Skip the fish and chips or their salads too. Maybe just stop in here for a mellow evening with a cup of coffee and people watching.
If you love diners and TV, this is a great place to get great mean and enjoy a movie or TV. I've been coming here for about 10 years now and the food and service are always consistent. They are very informal allowing you to seat yourself and not trying to oversell anything. The menu selection is decent and you can always get breakfast, lunch, or dinner anytime of day 24-7. If you just want a late night dessert, I highlly recommend the banana split (you may want to share it with someone though, it's quite large). And their Double Rainbow ice cream is the best in the area. As long as I live in this neighorhood, I'll always stop by here a couple times a month. You won't be disappointed!
Damn good patty-melt! They even remember to use rye bread! Patty-melts on non-rye bread is an offense committed FAR too often in this town, but the folks at the Video Cafe do it up right, bless their hearts. My wife had a grilled cheese and it hit the spot. They show movies and stuff and have some fun memorabilia on the walls. They also served me the coldest Budweiser that I've ever had at a diner. Thumbs up.
I've heard that late at night the place can be quite the scene, especially on weekends. So if eating with a bunch of loud drunks isn't your bag, come pre-last call.
good egg white omelette.
Great, casual place that has been around for ages.
I really like their burgers and root beer float. Last time I was here, I saw a woman wearing a hat with a plate on her head.
Trip, huh?
This diner has insanely palpable vibes.
Talk about mood.
Talk about atmosphere.
I had a David Lynch vision while sipping on an espresso float.
I enjoyed the totally random diner-esque menu, meets thai lunch cart, meets burn-out vhs shop that the Video Cafe embodies.
Plus 24 hour $2 beers.
WOW I am a big fan.
It was 3 in the morning and every other place was closed, so my friends and I decided to give this place a try. We went on the night of Halloween, so the long wait was understandable, but there was no excuse for the HORRIBLE service. This was literally the worst service I've ever experienced in my entire life! It was ridiculous how rude the employees were!! When we were seated, we tried to get the attention of one of the waitresses and she said "no don't talk to me" while shaking her head. Uh, okay? So when another waitress came by, I said "excuse me?" and she turned around and gave me "the hand" before she walked away. WTF? I know how busy everyone was, but would a quick "one moment, please" really kill you? When the second waitress came back around to take our order, she waited about 5 seconds (literally) before she didn't say anything and just walked away. To make the experience even better, they like to slam the glasses of water on your table and shove plates in your face before they run off. Worst. Service. Ever.
The only thing that saved me from this experience was the food itself, which was actually pretty good( I had a thai iced tea and mushroom burger). If it was for the crappy service, I might have given this place 4 stars. I'll probably try this place again next time, but only if nothing else is open again.
cheeseburgers! atmosphere!
I've never had worse pancakes in my life.
Ever.
My expectations were not high (read: drunk). Plop a few microwaveable flapjacks on my plate and I would've been a happy camper. What I got instead were overcooked, dry egg cakes that happened to have some nuts in it. No amount of butter or fake syrup could salvage that shit.
And they were playing Step Up 2 which was basically like rubbing salt in the wound...
(See pics)
So I saw this place a couple weeks and was intrigued by the name so I came back to check it out...
This place is also known as Thai me up. So very cute! It has old movie posters like the Godfather, Don Juan and other faded ones up in the high ceilings walls. Even some of the rental DVDs were a bit dusty looking. Very nostalgic!
I only came here for a quick bite as I was planning on a bigger dinner later on, which did not happen as I found out my friend Jason would be on CNN that I needed to rush home to check it out...
Onto the food, fried calamari was very properly deep fried with good sour sauce (was it Thai sauce)?
And the Espresso float (affogato di gelato) was very big and very delicious!!
They open 24 hrs and play movie at 10pm and throughout the night! Now this is the place to hang out!!
If you're in the richmond district, and it happens to be 3 am, and you've had a little too much to drink, this may be the restaurant for you. Not only do they have greasy burgers and sandwiches, they have greasy omelets and pancakes! When we went in, Planet of the Apes (the Mark Whalberg version) was playing, which was a lot better than i remembered it =].
All things considered, it's not too bad of a place, even if all of their movie memorabilia is circa 1999. I'd probably go with the breakfast stuff. Oh, and i think they have thai iced tea, but don't quote me on that.
WTF?OK?
This place is open 24Hours!
In San Francisco, where everything shuts down at 9pm because everyone thinks this is a "town",this is a great resource for everyone.
Holy S! All you guys expect a gourmet experience wherever/whenever you go?
Go the F home.
I mean really, this place is what it is as what it does and what it's for as who cares that it's a little ghetto. I have been going here since it was Big Heart Cafe and my parents were renting videos here for me.
So what if the food isn't top notch? So what if the service is brisk and sometimes rude? So what if VHS' are becoming obsolete? They have DVDs now. And the fries are always piping hot and the apple pie a la mode is as good as it gets.
The service reminds me of old school diners like on Home Improvement. You remember, Tim's friend's wife Doris? She was mean and rude and probably got away with being who she was because she is a fictional character on TV. So technically, dining at the Vieo Cafe makes me feel like I'm on TV! Woo hoo!
In any case, I usually go there in the middle of the night and I like getting the fries and sometimes the grilled cheese and sometimes the BLT and usually the apple pie a la mode. Unfortunately, I can't eat any of those things on my elimination diet. So once again, I look out towards the city longing for the good old days when I'd eat at 3 in the morning and wake up with poofy eyes from all the sodium intake. *tear*
like people watchin? get your fix at video cafe late nights. nothing beats mini-skirt wearing korean chicks puking on the sink inside the girls bathroom! how bout a chick passed out and snoring in her breakfast plate while her friends mack down on fried food right next to her? good times!!
i dont rememebr much about the food but our waitress was very sweet and elderly and was working hard on mothers day eve. and she told us she had something like 8 kidsand that = some serious employee dedication in my book!
you can also get much better service and foo here rather than the drive-in crapper diner down the street, i wont mention any names....
Video cafe is AWESOME!! OPEN 24hours and on-going movie night.
we come because it's convenient and fast. The old lady who's always working hard and busting tables is Rose, she's a sweet heart! if you're ever there, do me a favor and ask her how her day was or a simple Hello Rose would do :) after all she's serving you!
The mushroom burger is a favorite entre!! and for desert, the double chocolate fudge cake with a scoop of double rainbow coffee ice cream is Orgasmic!!
Last time i was there, we watched Gran Torino with yes, racist clint eastwood!! HILARIOUS!
I walk in holding a chess board; some hag tells me they don't allow games. I ask "why not?" and she says they don't let people play games or do homework at the tables. I look around and there are hardly any other customers. I turn around and I walk out.
I'm allowed to sit there and watch crappy movies all night long but I can't do anything else at the table?
I'm morally opposed to any establishment that tells me what I can or can't do while I hand over my $s. I'll go somewhere else less tyrannical.
I love this place, the food is cheap and not pricey at all. The portions are really good too , I like the free movies I get to watch while I eat! This place is open 24 hours,I come here for a late night snack sometimes. The service is really good, especially coming from someone who is very impatient when it comes to food arrival times. I think this place is perfect if you don't want to wait too long. The food quality is very fresh, you won't be disappointed.
Your typical neighborhood greasy diner, with the added flair of B-movie posters plastered on the walls ("Undercover Brother"? "The Time Machine"?)
Our server was very sweet, though. When my friend pouted because he told her that french toast wasn't usually served at 11 PM, he told us that he'd make a special request to the kitchen staff for her. Aw!
The french toast was decent, but again - typical greasy diner fare.
Any establishment that is willing to stay open 24/7 is A-Ok with me. However, this is drunk food people. If you go here on a date or something, clearly you are a moron. And yes, order at your own risk. Ive never had a problem with my food, but then again some nights I wasnt even aware that we went to video cafe. I feel really bad for the people that work there and have to deal with drunk fucks like myself...so make sure you leave a good tip!!
"Vid Caf" as my neighbors like to call it, has always held a certain mystique for me. Living less than 2 blocks away, I see it daily and always wonder what it is about.
My friendly neighborhood drunks always tell of their adventures to "Vid Caf" at some point between 3-6am in some sort of drunken stupor. They speak highly of the food and the dollar beers.
After all the wondering my first visit to the "vid caf" occurred last night. At some point after the baseball game, in some sort of drunken stupor. My friends who are visiting from Wisco joined me in 10 hours of drinking to rally our support for the Milwaukee Brewers that day and when we got home I was too intoxicated for my own good, and wanting food... (insert light bulb above the head) VIDEO CAFE!
We walked in and didn't know what to do with ourselves... and ended up taking pictures of all the land before time characters on the wall. We made it to a wonderful rounded booth and were soon after given water (YAY) by our wonderful waitress Rose, and her spectacular waddle.. adorable.
I ordered breakfast, scrambled eggs, bacon, french toast. YUM.. the bacon was crispy and the french toast was perfect... Though I was under the influence and this could have swayed the vote. I also had a strawberry milkshake, mmmm... Now this I can speak highly for, because I only finished half of it and managed to bring it home, glass and all... I discovered it in my freezer this morning and it was soo good :)
I cannot wait for my next late night adventure... More kudos to the Bollywood movie playing last night (those girls were soo white)
I'm a fan of this place on the weekends. In the city, you don't have many options after 2am for food: unless you want fast food or want to deal with the crowds and mediocre food at Orphan Andy's, Sparky's, et al. I know it's a bit of a commute for some, but this is over by my friend's house, so it's perfect for me.
You can walk in, usually not even have to wait for a table (although it does get crowded), order a burger, fish cakes, curry, or whatever have you and chat with friends while watching a movie. Perfect!
I personally love the Tod Mun fish cakes and the Chicken/Eggplant curry. It's such a better alternative to burger and fries. The prices are fairly inexpensive, too. I think you could probably eat here with a friend and spend between $20 and $30.
Now, to put this in context, I wouldn't come here during the day. I'm a fan of this place because of the fact it has good food (not great) and that it's open 24 hours. So really, this review is specifically for a late-night joint.
This is the place to be late at night. I simply must share with others a gem I discovered in the Outer Richmond. My experiences at the Video Café on Geary Street painted a positive picture on late night dining in San Francisco.
Being from New York City and a believer the night starts after 1 a.m. I set out on a mission to identify places to go during the wee hours of the night. During my first three months in SF, I frequent the "open all night" establishments around Union Square, but found them to be "too tourist". Then one night after leaving Union Square, I asked my taxis driver where the locals go for late night coffee and snacks, he replied, The Video Café.
Although, the food is good for that time of night, it is not the food that keeps me coming back; it is the wonderful woman that is working. Her bustle of service is productive, not intrusive. I have always defined a good waitress as one who has a positive, friendly, and attentive attitude and the woman working late night at the Video Café meets all of those expectations. I am certain she is probably the owner since she attends to every detail ensuring your visit will be a positive one.
Her service, the videos (playing on "clear as day" monitors), and a mix group of customers, make me return over and over again. Des SHC
Ending a night out at the bars at video cafe never fails to entertain me.
My St. Patrick's Day order:
Chicken Sandwich with cheese and fries on the side. Simple right?
What I got:
Chicken wings and fries with american cheese melted on top of them. WTF?
Oh, Video Cafe...I love our times together.

They have some old menu cards fro way back when this place was Foster's Cafeteria! What a throw back! This place has been around for a while. I can only speak for the breakfast, which is kinda hard to screw up (but not impossible).
This is a place which has a loyal local following. They know me now, and the lady who always wears the black leather skirt is friendly to me.
The room is kinda run-down as some of the booths need a bit of repair, but the breakfast I had was carefully prepared and hot. I will go back for one of those omelets.
I was amazed that they newsracks outside have not only the SJ Mercury/News, but also the Contra Costa County Times, as well as the rest of the local papers.
The Video Cafe is kinda like the San Francisco version of "Nighthawks", that iconic painting by William Hopper of the forlorn customers at an all-night diner (http://static.ulike.ne...). Going there at 11PM, you are bound to see an eclectic set of people within the haphazard layout of booths and tables. When I went one night, there was a clutch of shrieking Asian teens at one booth, a morose drug-addled runaway at a center table, a lonely senior nursing a cup of coffee toward the back...
The place lives up to its name. Rows of posters are plastered on the walls. The faded ones on top are from the 1980's, while the cleaner ones are from a decade back or so. There are three TV sets showing a DVD of some obscure thriller I've never seen (...and if I've never seen it, then that is really obscure...oh wait, there's Ernest Borgnine!) The menu is standard diner fare but done reasonably well for a greasy spoon.
I've had the burger here and most recently the $5.95 Super Sundae. Where else can you get a Super Sundae at 11PM in the city...with nuts and a maraschino cherry even? There's a spry elderly waitress, not an amiable smiler, but she's obviously been here since Methuselah. It's worth the trek to the Richmond if you're really hungry at midnight....not famished, not peckish....just HUNGRY!
FOOD - 3 stars...burgers and some teriyaki concoctions...oh yes and that Super Sundae...with nuts and...
AMBIANCE - 3 stars...not tidy enough to be quaint, but the booths are big enough
SERVICE - 4 stars...like clockwork...and the pickings for 24-hour anything are slip in this daytime city of ours
TOTAL - 4 stars...when you're hungry after Conan O'Brien or at least Craig Ferguson....oh hell, they get four stars for being open 24 hours, OK?
My friends & I randomly stopped here for a late late late meal yesterday. Here are my thoughts:
1. The waiter was nice
2. If you order a juice they'll make the straw wrapper into a flower.
3. They have Thai food and breakfast food on the same menu. This proves that God exists and he loves us all.
4. The jam comes in a jar and not in packets. As my friend Ani said, it felt like home.
5. There is a movie playing randomly, which is fine because it's the video cafe. There are tons of crazy movie posters.
Overall, they did a fine job on my meal and it was super cheap. Less than $5. Good times!
This place isn't where you want to go if you're expecting topnotch service or 5 star food. Me and my friends mostly go here late at night to satisfy our drunken cravings. The place is open 24 hours which is cool. I'd say it's worth a visit but don't expect too much.
Man, this place is VERY different during the day, but the food is still good!
It's definitely not as Thai as it may claim to be...I made the mistake of making such an assumption. I'd come anytime if you're older, but I wouldn't bother coming 'till after 10pm if you're looking for a livlier place.
What's with all the shitty reviews? This place is fine! Their menu doesn't have all the fancy-schmancy frou-frou brunch crap that everyone is used to, but they've got some basic omelettes and burgers, etc. Hell, if you want a mimosa, sneak it in already!
AND they're open 24 hours. What else is open 24 hours in the Richmond?
FYI: they serve Bud Light for $1.49!
This place has some weird wannabe Planet Hollywood decor.
The food is okay, average diner quality. I really didn't like the service. 1) The waitress charged me extra for fries with my cheeseburger, without even asking me if I had wanted any (and I would have argued it if I wasn't so drunk, tired, and just wanting to get out of there) 2) The waitress started taking all of our condiments off our of table (without asking) before we were even done eating! RUDE!
Next time I'm drunk and looking for late-night dining in the neighborhood, I'll go to Mel's, which is saying a lot, 'cause I really hate that place too.
Actually I feel bad. The lady who works there seems like a diligent worker, so I shouldn't judge the service too much. And since this place has been around and shows movies, it should probably deserve more. The food still sucks though.
