I break bad news for a living. For some strange reason, I get baked goods and thank yous for that. I received a box of baklava and two boxes of two different cookies bought by one of my clients from this bakery. WONDERFUL. Now I need to go there and buy my own.
Bad news, great baked goods. Who knew?
I'm a Greek poser. I'm half Greek but I don't speak/read it, I don't hang out with other Greeks, and I'm not religious/never go to church unless my yiayia visits and she makes me go with her. So basically the bulk of Astoria dislikes me.
That said, I remain true to all food-related Greek traditions I grew up with. Some things I make myself [spanakopita, baklava, etc;] but I always buy a vasilopita for New Year's [the one with the dime] and tsoureki for Easter [the one with the egg] and I always get them from Victory and they're always delicious. A little expensive but good. If you wait until the last minute to get them, be prepared to be crushed by a bunch of pushy loud broads and to not really receive the same uber friendly service as they're getting because you give a glassy-eyed stare when the employee starts speaking to you in Greek but really, you'll experience that in any Greek-owned operation. The loukoumades is also good and sometimes I stray and get one of those delicious mouse-shaped chocolate cakes too.
Very friendly and attentive service, extremely affordable prices, amazingly fresh and delicious pastries and cakes and tarts... I don't know the name of most items here, I just point at what looks best to me (which is pretty much everything). I love anything with shredded wheat, custard, crispy (even a little bit burnt) phyllo dough, or pistachios... This place is packed from floor to ceiling with goodies, yet somehow everything remains simple and high-quality... One friend of mine comes all the way here from the Upper West Side about twice a month just for the amazing biscottis, she gets two dozen and eats away at them for a few days -- as for me, I wait until the holidays then go completely hog wild... There are a lot of bakeries around, I really don't like most of them, but this one is really special.
Best frozen spinach pie!!! If you ever need a tray of it for a party, this is the place to go. Also, all the Greek sweets are awesome
the quality at this greek sweet shop is unparalleled
truly a hidden gem
go and discover
