This is a nice tour of a very well-preserved Victorian mansion from the Civil War era. The house isn't too huge, so it only takes about 40 minutes to tour. Tours are a tad pricey at 15 dollars, but you can save a little money with your AAA card. The tour guide was an older man who told stories, showed pictures and generally made you feel like you were stepping back in time. He did a good job. I was a bit disappointed that the kitchen and servants' quarters of the house did not appear to have been preserved or restored, but the rest of the house was in great shape and fun to see, even with a slight distraction from some tents left in and around the house from some type of fundraising party the night before. (I would have rather the tent inside the house at least been taken down. How long does it take to remove a tent and if necessary put it back up? )
Although they advertise the house as being "preserved rather than restored", when you get inside you find that various things have been restored due to damage or rot over the years, particularly fabrics, carpeting and a glass ceiling that was damaged in a hurricane. The fact that some things were restored didn't take away from my enjoyment of the house, particularly since much of the house actually has been preserved, but maybe they should qualify the statement at the start of the tour since clearly "everything" in the house has not been preserved..
Pretty nifty...especially when I found out active duty military GET IN FREE! I was sold.
An interesting and comprehensive tour, the docent seemed to be pretty knowledgeable on the history of the place all the way to the methods used in creating the coup d'oeil paintings all over. 90% of the furniture is original, so worth a look into the way the Victorian sub-culture lived. Crazy!
I encourage anyone who comes to Maine to make a stop at the Victoria Mansion. It has been said that the Herter Brothers were one of the first professional interior designers in this country. The Victoria Mansion is your opportunity to see their designs complete and intact. It is a treasure of the Gilded Age. Do not miss it!!
Fun to see once. The smoking room was the highlight, but solid all around. We did it with our four year old, but it is a bit quiet.
The house is Fab! The tour is interesting and very informative. I thought the price a bit hight but it was worth the money. The docent that gave us the tour was very informed and friendly. I would tell people to check the place out. The interior is so intact that is floors you to realize that MOST of the furniture and dishes etc is original to the house. The is rather unusual for these kinds of museums. If you find Victoriana interesting go see this place!

Well worth the entrance fee, this house features the most elaborate wall finishes I have ever seen in a private residence. Go see how wealthy Victorian families lived. And ask for Phyllis Price as a tour guide she is the best.
