Review Highlights
My review of the recent weekend brunch I had at Viceroy is going to be biased because:
* It was a beautiful day out, not too sunny or warm, pleasant and perfect for sitting outside. Viceroy has a nice stretch of tables on 18th Street, which doesn't get too much foot traffic and makes for a relaxing meal.
* The red bull mimosa. If you love mixing your stimulants, depressants, and vitamins (and frankly, who doesn't?), this is the drink for you. Champagne, orange juice, and Red Bull, and a sweet, boozy chemical-y taste that you'll like if you're weird like me.
* A sweet, nervous waiter who looks a bit like 80s teen star C. Thomas Howell. I don't know if this guy was new to being a server, new to the restaurant, or just a timid fellow by nature, but his nervousness was endearing and he was just the right amount of attentive.
* My brunch companion (this really should be at the top of the list). Let's face it, if you are in great company, you could be eating styrofoam and it won't matter. As it turned out, the food was quite delicious (from the mini-muffins and cornbread at the start to the sauteed fish and asaparagus I had as my entree), but enjoying the meal with a special person made it that much tastier.
So there you have it, my very biased review of Viceroy. Would it be a different review if I went there on a day with bad weather, with someone I didn't like very much, and had a different waiter? Obviously. But I'll still be back to see if the place holds up to my initial positive impression of it.
My partner and I were walking around Chelsea this morning and happened upon Viceroy. The ambience was great and the restaurant was very full, so we thought that was promising. There were a lot of options on the menu too, which was nice.
Unfortunately, the meal was disappointing. We each got an egg white omelette. He got vegetables and I got chicken and sun-dried tomatoes. Honestly, both were inedible. 75% of the omelette were egg whites. The vegetables were soggy and the chicken was absolutely TERRIBLE.
I gave 2 stars because the space is cool. I might give it one more try but definitely going to stay away from the eggs. ;-)
I may be partial to this place because I know the executive chef here. The entrees leave something to be desired but the flourless chocolate cake here is amazing. Pricing is on the steeper end, which leaves me indifferen about returningt. In a district where people are 'out of the closet', the clientele is apropos for the neighborhood.
When I think about it, I realize that I eat here a lot, so I should review the place, even though I have had the exact same thing to eat every single time I've been.
Basically, this is the go-to spot of a good friend of mine and myself, whenever I'm back in town. We lack imagination, I think, but like packing away massive, reliably cooked burgers; we've eaten many, here. They are quite good, by the way, although the salad (which you can get with your burger, instead of fries) tends to be limp and wet. And I've never yet had my request for 'no dressing, please!' honoured... and I haaaaaate dressing on my salad.
The service is not bad, but be prepared: if a crowd of nice-looking men arrives, you may have a long, cold wait before you see your waiter again!
I regret not discovering this gem earlier. Most of my meals here have been weekend brunch. I can solidly recommend the steak and eggs although the coffee could be stronger. For the handful of dinner visits, their burgers are Dagwood Bumstead size. The decor is something out of the Art Deco era but the rock music they usually play clashes with the architecture especially since the acoustics are not great for conversation when it gets crowded.
Truly the most consistently bad service I've had in New York. Been to Viceroy many times, primarily because the options in the neighborhood for a quick bite and drink are pathetic and it's one of the few places with space for a group. But every time I go, I wonder why I've bothered. The food is overpriced and mediocre and the waitstaff are inattentive at best. Good cocktails and the bartenders tend to be pleasant enough. Avoid sitting in the back near the kitchen unless you want to dodge the occasional unwanted roach crawling by your foot or up the wall next to you.
Lee, you can wait on us any day. You are such a charmer and a gentleman!
Thank you for treating us as though we were guests in your own living room. You served up great happy hour drinks with excellent recommendations. I especially liked the key lime martini ($11). The chef's fried calamari was a really generous portion, and the grill burger that our friend ordered was a big hit. You done good, buddy boy.
Overpriced and overcooked. Reminded me why I keep going back to the same handful of places over and over.
Lunch outing.
Was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful interior, and found I was able to savor it more as there were so few people in the restaurant at the time. Great, floor to ceiling windows, coffered ceilings, and comfortable seating though the "row-style" setup of booths running down the center of the space made me feel a bit too visible. I had a grilled chicken sandwich that unfortunately was nothing exceptional. It may have been the decor, or the prices that led me to have such high food expectations, but I was definitely disappointed and ate more of my boyfriend's smoked salmon sandwich (also lacking in some respects) than my own meal. If you dont mind spending extra cash, this could be a backup restaurant, but there's definitely better quality food for less in the chelsea area.
I stopped in here after a long flight from California, and had a relatively veggie-centric, minimalist meal. That being said, it was totally solid: the veggies (gazpacho, roasted beets, asparagus, beans) were fresh and cooked properly, and everything was flavorful and well presented. I'd definitely be inclined to give it another (more involved) try.
Love this place - it is the "Cheers" bar of Chelsea... they all know your name. ;)

Great happy hour until 7pm at the bar. Great barteners, Yosvanny - he makes the BEST Key Lime… Read more »
The service was OK. The food was OK. The bread they brought us was stale and sketchy. The whole place was really worn around the edges. Dirty floor, dirty menus. And the price was not right, at $36 for two mediocre brunches.
this restaurant was nearly empty when i went.
the food is too expensive... and really not even that good. i had a very average burger. no fireworks, explosions, bright colors... it was just "meh." the drinks were so-so. i ordered a cosmopolitan and was very disappointed.
honestly, there was nothing even worth remembering about this place.
i'm sure this place would be ok if you had just wandered in... but don't bother to make reservations. it's just not worth it.
It's Christmas morning. There's a smell of conifer in the air, the light is perfect (because you were so excited you got up at 7am), the presents under the tree are nearly glowing with potential. But then you open them, and they're all button-up dress shirts and slacks.
That feeling pretty much sums up Viceroy. It's got an appealing, spacious interior, a wonderful wait staff, an accessible location, and stuff on the menu looks decent. But the prices are just out of reach of reasonable, and the food is uninspired. Sorry, Viceroy - I wish I could write a different review for you, but when you ruin Christmas, there's nothing I can do.
I really wish this corner of Chelsea with the retro decor, outside seating, and prix fixe brunch was cool. Insanely cool. Packed and waiting an hour for tables because it's so freakin' good, and I wish I loved to go there. Oh well, there's other places for that.
The Viceroy is a default choice if you need to seat a larger group and an outside table would be nice. The food is decent but not memorable (you crave nothing), the brunch menu wide, and the aforementioned location makes for good people watching, but twice now my Sunday brunch service has been painfully, noticeably slow and forgetful. Don't mess with the coffee orders, capiche?
A friend with a common food allergy had a particularly hard time. The waiter didn't know, wouldn't check, served the plate with the food in question anyway, and didn't return to check on us. We needed to get the manager involved, and to his credit, he resolved it swiftly and apologetically, and with a free round of drinks.
I really wish I liked it, but I can't say I want to go back. I actually want to avoid.
I hear this place is great for brunch but I always end up in Viceroy for a late dinner. The food is fine. I wouldn't sit too close to the door or near the windows because it gets cold in the winter. That's all.
Viceroy has the feel of a french bistro, but serves traditional American with a variety of food that can satisfy a wide audience. Whether it's comfort food, light, heavy, seafood, pasta or salad, you can find something you'll like here. It's perfect for those nights where you're walking around the neighborhood looking for something to eat, but you're not sure what you want or are with a group with divergent interests.
My girlfriend had the soup du jour, a carrot ginger soup that hit the spot, while I had a roasted chicken breast, filled with goat cheese, spinich and mushrooms. It was absolutely sensational, though the mashed potatoes it was served over was rather pedestrian. We also split a tuna tartare, with shallots and olives, an interesting combination that was quite delicious.
The prices here are a little above average, but not bad. Expect to pay about $15-$20 for entrees and $10-$12 for the apps.
My only complaint, a minor one, is that our outdoor table hadn't been properly cleaned before we came, so it was rather sticky. I guess that's what I get for forgetting my manners and putting my elbows on it!
The service is friendly, but the food's a bit on the mediocre side for my taste, and their menu's a bit too marked up for the quality of food. It's not that their food's bad, it's just that it's only OK -- and in Chelsea, how far can you go on mediocrity alone? Go here if you're looking for a "safe meal" without any surprises or creativity.
Plus: They're really nice about accommodating dog owners in their outdoor seating area.
My friend has been working here for years and tonight was the first time I visited him. I had some tasty calamari and lots of jacks and gingers during happy hour.
The service was great and friendly. The calamari was amazing. they give you honest answers about what is good. I will be back there again after work.
Everyone should meet me for a drink.
Viceroy is a little on the expensive side--and this is coming from a cheapskate-- but the food is worth the splurge. We came in because our nearby 1st choice had a 25 minute wait and Viceroy offered to seat us right away. I like the comfy booths and the excellent menu. The full bar didn't ruin my night at all, either.
The only bad part was that for some reason two of our three entrees were charged at a slightly higher price than the menu listed ($2 and $1 more). The waiter apologized and fixed it but I'm guessing most people wouldn't notice and pay a 5-10% premium without really noticing. It's bad business.
I used to live on 19th St between 7th and 8th and Viceroy is a nice little place around the corner with a pretty good brunch for Sunday mornings. The place is pretty neat, and it's nice when they open the windows on warmer days. The food and menu is interesting with a good assortment of breakfast/brunch breads and spreads. The service is hit or miss, but not terrible. It is Chelsea after all, and the servers tend to be happy and friendly if you are polite to them.
One thing though, I'm a straight male who is very gay friendly, but sometimes, even this place was outta control rowdy full of Chelsea boys a few Sunday mornings... It can be pretty fun if you are cool with that vibe. If you are a decent looking guy expect to get checked out. Hahaha.... the question is: are you nervous or flattered about that? =D
The Viceroy is a great brunch spot if you don't mind spending some $$. It's pricey but the coffee is amazing and orange juice is fresh squeezed. The food is so-so but the atmosphere makes up for it.
The outdoor seating is on 18th street so you don't have to deal with the crowd passing on 8th Ave. I bring my small dog can sit comfortably under the table.
Service is very friendly and accommodating. I only go when I have some money to burn.
Since I get to New York once every other month or so, there is a lot that I want to check out when I get there. That isn't saying that I always try something new, because I usually end up at Viceroy - mostly to check out the Chelsea boys - this is really one of the best places to see some of the best eye candy in Manhattan...if not inside, then through the big windows.
As with most places that I go in Chelsea, the waiter service is generally indifferent, and the food mediocre. However, the one time we had brunch, both the service and food were fantastic. The Bloody Marys helped a lot too!
do NOT eat here. repeat DO NOT. I really haven't felt this strongly about a restaurant before. Ate dinner here last night as some other places nearby I wanted to go to were packed. Restaurant was empty, sign one not to eat there. I ordered the stuffed chicken with goat cheese, spinach and mushrooms with a side of mashed potatoes. Sounds delicious, no? Au contraire! Chicken was definitely pre-made, probably from the day before, and was obviously reheated. It was bone dry. I could barely cut it it was so dry. Took forever just to chew because of lack of moisture. Oddly kept shape, and had no taste. The whole mixture was tasteless, and I thought that was impossible with goat cheese. Pretty sure the spinach was of the frozen variety and the mushrooms of the canned kind. Absolutely disgusting. I'm pretty sure the mashed potatoes were dehydrated flake mashed potatoes too. gross. The only good part was the 2 pieces of asparagus on top, which was the only fresh part of this meal.
I will give props to the waiter though, he was super nice (probably the perkiest person ever). My fiance had the burger, which he thought was good, so maybe just keep it simple. Also, interior was cool looking, and bar area was semi-crowded. Perhaps a meet-up spot, but just don't go near the entrees.
Viceroy has inviting wide-open windows, a calm layout, and a pleasing bar.
The brunch prix-fixe is a nice deal: $16 gets you a drink, a choice from a wide variety of eggy dishes (omelettes, benedicts, and fried stuff), and a coffee. I omit the "bread basket" from that list; for Viceroy have homemade corn-cheddar muffins and adorable little biscuits, but they detract from the appeal by serving these cold and with the oddest-coloured preserves.
The fish an' chips with the allegedly home-made tartar sauce are pretty decent, but the atmopshere is not right for the f'n'c. The fried chicken is a little too moist, perhaps because the cuts of meat are so plump that they do not cook evenly and need an additional injection of oil or something -- but the accompanying collard greens, with smoky bacon, are quite delicious.
The atmosphere and staff are very pleasant, and that counts for a lot. For brunch, Chelsea and the Meatpacking District offer many other choices with better food, trendier dcor, or scenier staff, but Viceroy has its windows and (comparative) calm.
Although the Viceroy is a Chelsea boy staple, and I'm a single heterosexual Brooklyn girl, I can't resist the prix-fixe brunch special. For $15, you get coffee, a drink, a choice from a wide variety of staple brunch items and a nice mish mash of random dishes and a little basket of baked scones and mini muffins. The service is always quick and friendly and the food is always perfect.
Check out the lamb salad or fried oyster selections. My stomach is grumbling just thinking about them!
They need to control their flies, gnats, and fruit flies. There were so many they were swarming our table and our mimosas and the glass rims. Yuck!
Plus the menu was not that extensive for Saturday pre-fixe Brunch.
Probably won't return -- to many other more sanitary options to choose from.
Who doesn't do this restaurant?? It's almost a requirement if you're gay and in NYC. Okay food, nice wait staff, clean, full bar and this place is always open. Nice atmosphere for a bite with a friend. Bottom line: great place to take the folks for a nice meal when visiting, or you're out and need to sit and eat NOW.
Vastly improved (for those who remember the VIceroy of old). Brunch, in particular, deserves an easy 4 stars.
If not for my best friend living down the street, I would not have known about the Viceroy, and boy am I glad that she introduced me to it. Their banana brownies (blended together for a nice combination) with smooth tahini vanilla ice cream is to die for! I certainly enjoyed their french toast, as well. As my pal I was with remarked, the waitor moved so quickly he seemed to float across the floor. :) Bonus: while watching the Academy Awards, circa 2005, we noticed the Viceroy was the exact same setting used to film a commercial for Visa featuring the director M. Night Shyamalan. So we were uuber excited.
Stopped by here after hitting the warehouse sale. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. She had the Grilled Chicken Paillard salad and it was quite good. All fresh ingredients and quite a large portion, dressing was epically tasty for some reason. The Caprese was done correct as well, fresh mozzarella and tomatoes with a nice balsamic reduction. I had the Stuffed Chicken Breast and it was good with the mushroom, goat cheese and spinach. I would go back again, they seem to have nice happy hour drink specials as well. The only downside was the service, the guy was a bit 'flighty' as in not attentive.
Pretty solid brunch spot with outdoor seating. I had some sort of healthy omelette which was pretty bland, but my friends' seemed to enjoy their choices a bit more.
Staple brunch place in the area. Nice Art Deco inspired decor, good service and consistently tasty food. Lots of pretty boys around to boot. hmm, that sounds dirty.
Amazing brunch. My father swears the salmon was the best he's ever tasted in his 50+ years.
Despite one bad service experience (no fault to the server), I love going to the Viceroy for brunch. Their prices are fair for the amount of food, and the mimosa included is always good. Plus, I love their basket of muffins - a sure to eat item, since so many of my friends are off carbs.
You might need to hit a bucket of golf balls into the Hudson at nearby Chelsea Piers to re-assert your heterosexuality afterwards but the brunch is fantastic (fried oysters and scrambled eggs or the lobster pot pie are two great dishes) and the price reasonable (prixe fixe $15) .
I always pass this place when I'm in Chelsea and think "this place looks so cute!" And guess what, it is. A nice little cafe - good food (sort of French cum American), perfect for a walk-in with no expectations. Service left a little to be desired, but it was a Friday night.
been here once, one late evening ( i must have had something like a burger meal, which i recall was OK). also, i'd say i like the interiors! the service's fast and attentive.
Each and every time my friend comes into town we hit up Viceroy. I have never ever ever had a disappointing meal. Only problem is that they are constantly changing the menu so it isn't the type of place where you can eat the same thing each time you go. The best thing I've had from there was a seafood (lobster?) ravioli .The next best thing was a lamb dish. We are usually too stuffed (and drunk from the martinis and cosmos) to order dessert. If you can't afford the pricey meals then the drinks are alway always always perfectly mixed and you can stop in, have a drink, take in the sights and keep it moving. Viceroy is the type of place that will spoil you. I see all kinds of people in there from same sex couples to hetero couples with kids to Grandparents. Kind of reminds me of the Castro in S.F. where everyone just blends together. The wait staff is always eye candy and they know it. I recommend dinner. We went for brunch once and were a little disappointed but dinner is always good. Be sure to get a window seat because the outside activities are pure entertainment that will have you talking for days if not weeks.
turtle buns and i stopped by for a quick brunch before hittin the barney's warehouse sale last weekend (which btw sucks). i haven't been to viceroy in gawd knows how long and was craving their lobster pot pie. unfortunately the such is no longer available on the menu, fortunately soul food now is. our delightful little waiter suggested that i try the baked turkey lunch and mamma DUN say no to anything that comes with a side of mac-n-cheese and collard greens. the frix-pix is pretty substantial for $15. holla!
