Oh Viceroy, you purveyor of fine Indian food!
The butter chicken has a nice savory flavor and tender bite-sized chunks of chicken. The lamb keema's spicy kick can be gently mellowed by drizzling the avocado Raitha yogurt salad onto it as you eat.
Samosas? Smashing.
Lassi? I could bathe in that sweet nectar.
Lamb, chicken, vegetarian, every facet is excellent. The portions are generous and reheat well the next day.
For a truly sumptuous experience, I recommend you bring friends, share entrees, skip the rice, go in with the intent of eating with your hands, and use naan or garlic naan as your utensils. The Viceroy is a classy joint with attentive waiters, but they don't mind if you kick it old school Mumbai style. -

For Shame! I really liked them... now not so much...I came in with a groupon and I have been a frequent customer of theirs prior to receiving my groupon. Love the food. I came to dine-in only to find that my check was over 10$ than anticipated. I double checked 2 online sources of grubhub and the restuarant online website. Both sites had a couple dollars lower than in-store. So i was very surprised to see that my original plan to order-in like i have always loved and done caused me the most problems. I came to dine-in only to find that my groupon became obsolete. And on top of that I had better service on the phone than in person. So if you walk in the restaurant there are 2 sides. Going straight is a more informal diner buffet type and the one on the right is Viceroy of India proper? The manager said it was a price difference with online and instore that was only for delivery. This was at 230pm. Its still lunch and I'm eating in. So What? I paid 2$ for a glass of water, 2$ for a napkin, and 2$ for a knife and fork? And it wasnt on the check? I couldnt even go home with the sweet but petite serving platters they used. (they were cute)... The price on the menu said otherwise. Really? Then why charge 3$ for delivery? I should have just ordered for delivery like always. Was a fast one pulled over me? Im sooooooo turned off. Im deleting you from my "likes" Viceroy of India. For Shame!
Bottom line:
Order for delivery only...only! -
Review from Scott C.
I at Viceroy of India for lunch on Sunday and took advantage of the lunch buffet. The decor of the restaurant is nice - white table clothes on both the booths and tables. The service was so-so at best. I think the expectation is that most people are there just for the buffet and minimal attention is needed. Also, the bus boy (man) stepped on my friend's foot twice and dripped water on him during the meal. Not great service...
The buffet options were good - a nice variety of vegetarian and meat. The chana masala was the best dish as it had ample spice in the sauce which really made the chick peas pop and it was good for dipping your naan into. The tandoori chicken was also pretty good as well - the chicken was moist and the flavor was just right for the dish. The other dishes sag paneer, goat curry, and samosa were so-so as the flavors were not as strong as I would have expected. Bland and Indian food don't necessarily go together. Perhaps they expect a lot of tourist (or non-Indian) foot traffic and tone down the spice level of their food?
The desserts available were OK - the mango ice cream was a nice finish to our meal and the jalabi was good but had a somewhat strange after-taste to it.
Overall, Viceroy of India offered a great selection in their buffet with mixed service at best. With all of the options up and down Devon I would explore other places after having eaten here. -

2 stars for the prices and portion sizes. For $14, I want more than a small bowl of butter chicken. I think we were charged extra for the rice too, but I wouldn't know since the bill did not break that information down for me. The service was polite. The waiter who picked up our folder as we were walking out checked the tip right in front of us before saying goodnight.
I'm disappointed because this place came highly recommended by a friend. -

We had a coupon to Viceroy of India so we stopped by to have our Indian food fix for the month.
We ordered our usual Indian dishes, typically a mild curry or a tikka masala, along with some naan and some tandoori dish. The food was good, very filling as with most of our Indian dinners, and I definitely left feeling like I was about to explode.
However, I felt the service was lacking, as with other restaurants on Devon.
I have not tried their buffet, but I would assume that they would serve standard Indian fare.
If I get another coupon, I would go back, but if not, I'll try somewhere else. -

Went here on a Saturday night and it was quiet. Probably around half full. The decor marked it out as a higher end indian eatery, with prices to match. On the upper end of what I'm willing to pay for a curry. My entree (prawn vindaloo) cost $17.95 and came with neither rice nor naan. As other people have mentioned, the portions weren't especially large and the dish was light on the 'prawn' part of prawn vindaloo. The curry actually contained about as much potato as prawn.
Other than the portion size, the food was fine. Not amazing, but fine. Poppadums with pickles were fetched out immediately as we sat down (lime pickle was very good), and after ordering, the rest of the food arrived promptly. The menu is great for vegetarians and is very comprehensive. The saag paneer (paneer cheese in spinach sauce) was really nice, and everybody who ordered a mango lassi seemed to enjoy it greatly. I had a "Taj Mahal" beer, which was a pretty bland and tasteless lager. I'd not drink this again, but this isn't the fault of the restaurant.
Overall an enjoyable visit, marred only by the high price/small portion combo. I can imagine feeling much better about the viceroy if I had come here for lunch and paid $10 for the buffet.
Late edit: The garlic naan bread was *very* garlicky, and I mean this in a really good way. After just one garlic naan I'll be able to sleep a night without waking in a cold sweat, panicking about vampire home invasions. -

May be nice for a buffet type thing...but not if you thought you were getting a deal by purchasing an online voucher from Living Social, Groupon, etc.
We were completely ripped off at this place - paying $15 for literally 5 little bites of chicken masala. Seriously!? We could've had all you can eat for $6 less. But they wouldn't allow us to touch the buffet since we had a voucher. They also must be used to letting people self serve because the service was HORRIBLE! It took 15 minutes just to waive our server down and another 15 to get a glass of water. 30 minutes waiting on the bill.
Will not be coming back. Ever. -
Review from Jade T.
I went here with David J. for a Saturday buffet lunch. My initial impression was positive. The staff (or at least the manager) was nice and welcoming. Usually I experience no personality when dining at Indian restaurants. The decor is a little outdated (very similar to a banquet hall), but when you're hungry nothing else matters but the food.
Fortunately for me, most of the buffet dishes were vegetarian. The samosas were huge and hot. I tried almost everything, but had more of the palak paneer and paneer makhani. The sauce for the latter was a little thin for my liking, but acceptable. It wasn't the best Indian food I had, but if it's affordable and decent, I'll shove the food down my mouth.
For around $10 per person for the lunch buffet, it's a good deal. I'd rather spend that much and get an assortment of dishes rather than paying per dish. It seriously adds up when you order appetizers and entrees. Just go to a buffet.
PS: If you check in on Yelp you'll be offered free mango ice cream. However, it's already available in their buffet! -

I went here for the lunch buffet this past Saturday and was mostly impressed. I forget the price...somewhere around $10/person...but it was a very good value. I particularly liked the samosas, which were very light and on the softer side. They also had great saag paneer. Vegetarians will be very happy with the buffet, as it's about 90% vegetarian. I tried the butter chicken, and it was good as well, though the ratio of chicken to sauce is on the low side. I think there was only one other meat dish, but I didn't check that out.
They offered a couple of things for dessert, including some delicious mango ice cream. I also usually love kheer/rice pudding, but the stuff here was the worst I've had. It was too soupy and incredibly bland.
Service was pretty good and the staff was friendly compared to some other places on Devon that I've been to. Water glasses never got empty, which is important when eating Indian food :) The restaurant itself is also well maintained. There's a bakery or something straight ahead as you walk through the entrance, so make sure you turn and take the doors to the right. Metered parking was also easy to find late on Saturday morning. I'll definitely be back! -
Review from Cintya P.
WOW! I really love this place! Good food and friendly staff that really care for their quality of food, from what I experienced, and great tasting chai. I'm such a sucker for good chai!
My friend who works here had the great idea for having a school group meeting here to have lunch while working on our Globalization topic. We had the buffet and everything tasted so delicious and fresh! Nothing looked or tasted as if it were sitting there for a while. The rotti and naan bread were always soft and hot and I really loved the tikka paneer and palak saag they had and the basmati rice mixed with vegetables. The samosas looked tempting too, but I was too late to get one because they were all gone! That must be a sign that they were good. Oh my, and I had jalebis for the first time and it was phenomenal!
I really love Devon Avenue! It's a great experience to just walk around the different neighborhoods and embrace cultural diversity. -

Stopped in here for the first time during their Lunch Buffet and had an above average lunch. The restaurant is one of the cleanest on Devon...always a plus for me. The buffet was a decent spread with a good mix of vegetarian options. For the most part, the Indian flavors that I have been accustomed to were lacking. Everything was average. I would have given it two stars if it was not as clean as it was, there was a pleasant staff and for the simple fact that I will probably go back. Can you really give a 2-star review to a place that you will return to? One of life's true mysteries.
Good... not Great.

Started the dining experience with a hair in one of the sauces. Didn't tell the GF as I wanted to stay for the entrees. I could tell immediately that they were cutting corners by the cheap Ikea flatware. Food was ok. The owner(?) didn't want to honor any other coupon I had as "not more than one coupon per visit". OK, I understand that, but one coupon (from Yelp) was for a free dessert. I will NOT return solely for that. Actually, I will not return at all being that you didn't honor something that may have changed my mind on your service. I never felt welcome here.

I usually only eat one dish at Indian places...Butter Chicken and nan. I have tried this dish at a lot of restaurants and it was pretty good here. It was kind of expensive, but that is typical at an Indian Restaurant. Although, we had a coupon, so it was worth it haha. The nan here was really good too. It was nice and soft and buttery.
The atmosphere here was nice as well. Well, if you choose to go to the more formal part of the restaurant. According to the waiter, the other side is for take out or if you want some kind of Indian dessert. It is also more expensive.
Overall, I would definitely go there again. I thought it was great. -

First lesson in Indian dining, just go for the lunch buffet, eating off the menu is too expensive for the size of the portion. With the buffet you get to try a variety of different dishes at a low price of $11. Their Tandoori Chicken is great so flavorful and moist, the Butter Chicken, is some of the best I have ever had and their curry peas and Samosas are excellent.
Our friend absolutely loves the lamb and the spinach and cheese and tofu in tomato sauce are also equally delicious. Each time I get a craving for Indian I head straight to Viceroy! -

So yes I had the most popular Indian dish the Chicken Tikka Masala but how can I resist this chicken breast cooked in a tastefully seasoned delicate onion, tomato and cream sauce. As expected it was delicious. Thank goodness the waiter,a very nice gentleman, brought me to my senses and suggested I order naan and how happy I was to stuff my face with this perfectly baked and oil drizzled bread. I drank Taj Mahal (Indian beer) it was light and crisp. Side note: on a way back home, I actually randomly stopped at Adelphi Liquors and got myself a 6pack for later.
I love Indian food when it's good. Viceroy of India has good food. Eat, drink and enjoy.Listed in: Top Restaurants

Had a great meal here, trying their roast lamb. When it came out, the portion was very generous and it was seasoned to perfection.
We also ordered a curry chicken, which seemed a bit more skimpy on the portion, particularly because we ended paying extra for bread. I'm not an expert on Indian Restaraunts, but my personal feeling is that if you have a dish that requires dipping due to a curry sauce, it should come with bread.
All-in-all I think this was a great place. We lucked out and ended up having a coupon, which made it a bit cheaper. -

Overpriced and the food was nothing special. For $15.00 the Chicken Tikka Masala is a cut up chicken breast in a tiny bowl. No rice. No bread. Those are extra. For $9 we got tiny drinks that were made with well liquor. Our bill came out to $90 for 3 people. We were all pretty disappointed. The dining room is a little "fancier" than your average restaurant on Devon but it doesn't make up for the small portions of overpriced and uninteresting food and drinks.

Even with my bad Groupon dinner experience last night, this still is my favorite Indian restaurant on Devon.
Last night: The veggie snacks platter was pretty greasy, which would have been okay except that the waiter took away our chutney right as he brought the samosas -- doest that make any sense? I had to flag down two waiters to get it back. The lentil soup was a yellow creamy flavorless mess. The lamb curry and onion naan were good, though. With the place being so packed for the last night of the Groupon, it was hard to get a waiter's attention or my water filled.
Every other time I've gone: Best Indian buffet in town, which is really quite a deal for lunch (and will probably be all the food you need for two days). The variety of the curries and vegetarian dishes is amazing, and dessert is always good. The last time I was there the mango ice cream was sweet and tasted like real mangoes, not just concentrate from a box.
So Viceroy, I'll give you a pass on last night -- I'll be back. -
Review from Nick M.
Maybe it's because I've eaten at the best Indian restaurant in the city (Luzzat) or maybe it's just because I've eaten and love Indian food so much that I now expect a certain level of flavor. Sadly Viceroy didn't live up to those expectations. Based on what I ate, I would call it Americanized Indian. I know that's harsh and I'm certainly no expect (never traveled to India), but the bland and lack of heat meals that were put in front of me (not to mention only white people in the restaurant which put me off right there) made this statement stand out in my mind. It wasn't terrible by all means just not that heat or taste bud jumping flavor that I've come to expect.
On a positive note, the service is top notch, it's super clean, and though it's a more expensive the portions are bigger.
Vegetable Samosa- One was luke-warm and the other was hot. I was starving so I ate it anyways. I know I could have just sent it back.
Chicken Curry- Boneless cubes of spring chicken cooked in a traditional onion & tomato sauce. Super bland, where is the curry?!
Saag Paneer- Spinach cooked with homemade cottage cheese in a mildly spiced onion, tomato sauce. Also bland
Garlic Naan- Excellent
I know I usually order more but after tasting these I kind of lost my appetite. It's not that I won't give Viceroy another shot but my taste buds have to forgive them and that might take awhile. -

I will be the first to admit: i'm a complete newbie when it comes to indian food. But I had a groupon and my bf and I have been itching to take the dive b/c of a recent episode of Kitchen Nightmares.
Interior is lovely for a date. Spacious, roomy, and gives you the feel like you're sitting in a courtyard of a palace. On to food.
In response to multiple reviews, we tried the butter chicken, the chicken tikka marsala for entrees. Samosas for appetizers. Basmati rice, parantha, and garlic naan for little sides. and the mango ice cream dessert!
Three sauces come out which are very complex yet flavorful. Great for dipping nearly EVERYTHING into (there was a chunky dip that was super spiced--- the only one my sweet-geared palate didn't favor).
Samosas- pretty large! but flaky and yummy and a good choice appetzr for a hungry tummy.
Butter chicken- creamy and savory
Chicken tikka marsala. similar to the butter chicken, but more on the sweet side for it's creamy sauce.
I liked the garlic naan (as i expected to) but being asian, I'd def recommend it all with a bowl of rice. The rice was pretty good too!! (and i get picky and favor my asian rice)
the finisher- the mango ice cream was... a little better than okay. i think it's an acquired taste, but not the standard typical ice cream. But ice cream because there's no other way to describe. It's more like a frozen mango/coconut cream cube. It's cut into chunks (but not milky. more icy-- and i just don't like biting into cold). Flavor wise, it's not super sweet which makes it a little refreshing... but it's definitely not the sinful kind of dessert. Worth trying, but be prepared-- it's a big portion of the stuff.
It was a little on the pricey side ($15 an entree) If not for the groupon, we probably would have ordered only one entree, a side of rice, and maybe one appetizer. we had more than enough for a second meal for the both of us when we got home. So i'd recommend sharing if ur not a big eater.
we'll be back to try more -

Having a coupon with you for a restaurant where you would not know if you would have gone there without it, at least encourage you to write something.
It was bad in all respect. Food, prices and worst, the customer service.
None of our orders were good. I think I never tasted Kadai Chicken so dull before in an Indian restaurant. Tandoori Rotis were really thin and hard.
Probably, only thing that I liked is Jeera Rice.
Most of all, what I amazed the server brought a check which was not ours. Looking at orders and 100% increase on the total bill, I was almost fainted. I was even more amazed when I server gave a look when I said that it was not ours as if I was lying to him. Thank god, another server indicated him that he messed it up. To my surprise, he did not even apologize.
One more last thing, its pricey. -

Delivery Attempt #2
Alright, Viceroy, you had another chance.
More dishes arrived cracked, although only leaking
slightly. Save the daal!
This time I opted for a non-vegetarian combo platter, some biryani, and a mango lassi. Same as before, everything was good enough, yet not spectacular. In addition, whether GrubHub or Viceroy is to blame has yet to be determined, my free (with minimum purchase) samosas never arrived. I didn't add them to my main order because of the freebie. No samosas for me. Boo. Big time boo.
The bright spot was the tasty garlic naan. It's huge and perfectly crispy and doughy at the same time.
For the price I paid, I got an OK amount of food. Not being stingy here. I just know if I went to the restaurant I'd pay less than $20 per person for their buffet deal. Something to keep in mind if you're thinking about delivery.
Will I give them another shot? My position in my previous review stands. I may not skip it altogether, though would keep it only as a backup. A third chance is a pipe dream.Listed in: Hey You Guys!!

I like the food here - always have. Service is well, meh.
One thing I would like the management to understand though is that I wouldn't dream of eating here without a coupon - its REALLY expensive and portions are small. (no leftovers to speak of) When I say that please know that am not one of those "huge-portions" people, in fact I hate places where they give you too much food instead of making what you get good...that said, it really gets pricey with a couple of drinks and 2 entrees.
Viceroy - stop overcharging especially with the overlit not very great atmosphere! -

3.5 is about right on. This is solid Indian food. Certain dishes are very well made - classic Chicken Tikka Masala and the Lamb Vindaloo were exellent, but the Chicken Korma was somewhat lacking. The lady is highly critical of all Indian food, and overall she loved it, so that's saying something. Naan's good, and that's a big plus actually.
Prices are a little high, but overall this place beats the living shit out of most of the other terrible Indian places in the Uptown area. -

I've been on a bit of an Indian kick lately. Okay, I'm always on an Indian kick. Maybe that is why my pants don't fit these days? I digress....
I bought a YouSwoop coupon for Viceroy of India because I had only had take-out from the joint and wanted to try it out in house.
From the start the staff was very attentive, respectful and friendly. I found the atmosphere to be clean and very nice.
As I typically do, I ordered too much food but I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. My companion and I had the veggie samosas (light, flaky, fragrant and delicious), Naan (buttery, doughy and crisp), Paneer Makani (flavorful and fresh), Chicken Tikka Masala (very good with smoky flavor), Basmati rice (perfectly cooked) and a lentil something (also very good).
I also enjoyed two glasses of a house Cabernet--should've maybe had one as the pour was really heavy but who am I to say no to another?
Our bill before the YouSwoop was a bit pricey but really not too bad considering the drinks and the nice portion sizes.
One of the more enjoyable Indian restaurant experiences I have had.Listed in: Date Night, Desi Delights

The food was delicious, but....
Saag Paneer 1/2 order: 4.00
Mutter Mushroom Subji: 7:50
Chicken Jalfrazie: 8.95
Naan: 1.50
Onion Kulcha: 2.50
Plain Rice: 3.50

Subtotal: 27.95
Tax 11% 3.07

What I paid: 39.40 + tip
I don't like that math. Perhaps they also charged me for the red chutney I didn't get (1.50) or changed the menu prices. I wouldn't know, because there was no receipt. -

If this restaurant was close to my house and not on a strip with tons of other Indian restaurants I might say that I would eat there again. However, because it is not, and there is at least one other place in the same price range that is significantly superior to Viceroy, I will not be returning. Nevertheless, here is my general review:
Ambiance: Closer to fine dining, clean, comfortable.
Service: Excellent, unmatched in that area.
Food: I can only go by what we tried.....1) Chicken tikka masala - tasty, high quality of meat, but have had better (definitely a bit bland); 2) Lamb vindaloo - spicy as it should be but lacked flavor (heat is not everything), high quality of meat, have had much vetter; 3) Basmati rice - worst I have ever had; 4) Garlic naan - tasty in spots where it wasn't dry; 5) Parantha - best I have ever had. -

We came on a Saturday night with a groupon. We were seated at a table that was clearly too small for our party of 3. I asked the waiter for a different table and he hesitated before giving us a different table. We ordered
taj mahal beer - ok
viceroy deluxe vegetarian snacks - ok, too oily
butter chicken - good, very tender
mattar paneer - very good, loved the green peas
garlic nan - good
I thought the food was good, but very oily. The waiter was hard to flag down, even though our water was always filled by the bus boy. Our food was quite expensive as well, even with the groupon. -

Yikes.
My boyfriend and I wanted Indian buffet and decided to try something different than our standing favorite, Standard India on Belmont. I scoured the web, reading yelp reviews in hopes of finding a clean buffet with a sweet atmosphere (and ideally not too many non-veg options). Not having much luck looking online, we decided to just head to Devon ave and play it by ear. Once we got to the 2500 block it was a bit overwhelming....we decided on Viceroy because it looked alright from the outside. The result was underwhelming.
After telling our server we'd like the buffet (at least I think he was our server, no one seemed delighted we were dining there) we had to request something to drink because they didn't ask if we wanted anything. Nor did they bring naan, samosas, or anything else to the table like other places do.
Not much to the buffet, a couple overly fried appetizers that made me feel sick (and I love that stuff). Some of the dishes weren't labeled so I didn't know if I could eat them or not (didn't know if they were vegetarian) and I otherwise, didn't have as many options as other indian buffets offer. The Saag Paneer had an odd taste which was disappointing but my boyfriend said he liked the buttered chicken dish.
The desserts were nothing to write home about either and the rice pudding tasted blah and like the rice was overcooked. By the end of the meal I was totally bummed by the not great food (and being ignored by the staff) that I was ready to go. There were also screaming children to endure.
Overall, this was an expensive meal for bad service and underwhelming food. They make it look classy in there but it's a bit of an illusion.
Go to standard india and leave with a smile... :) -

We went her for my sister's birthday, and we were so disorganized. We had 8 people in our party, we showed up late for our reservation, and we had no idea what to order. But the staff at Viceroy treated us so well despite of all of that!
We ordered food family style, but only a couple of people had good suggestions. Luckily the server made some excellent suggestions and took care of us. Everything we had was delicious.
The food and service were excellent, I would definitely return. -

I'm a big fan, my wife & I come by about once every other month for a nice late Saturday night dinner. We really like the Saag (Palaak) Paneer, the Tikka Masala, and the Khorma (please excuse my spelling if I botched these words, I don't feel like looking them up).
The samosas are so-so to me, but I'm not a big fan of them in general. My wife lives for their Kashmiri Naan. Also, there is a little attached bakery that is good for some sweets after dinner, it's a different business, but I assume affiliated with Viceroy. -

Great Indian food! The buffet is great if you don't know much about Indian cuisine, are in a hurry, or just want to pig out. Do yourself a favor and order from the menu and your experience will be enhanced tenfold.
Worth noting is that the atmosphere is nice, clean, and an acceptable place to take your family.
Do not eat at the cheap buffet next door .... -

Headline: Subpar food, priced higher compared to competition, poor service (at least our server)
I've dined on Devon street about half a dozen times; considering these experiences, I find Viceroy to have been a bit below average. This is disappointing considering they bill themselves as an upscale restaurant. There are a lot of Indian restaurants to choose from on Devon, so Viceroy really needs to step up their game if they want to stand out in a competitive market--especially considering their higher prices. If you don't need a tablecloth, try elsewhere.
My girlfriend and I started with the vegetarian appetizer sampler. All the items on the platter were good, but nothing stood out as exceptional. We moved on to a paneer bell pepper dish with rice and garlic naan. Like the appetizer, it was fine, but not as savory as I expect the same dish to be at another--more moderately priced--restaurant down the street.
While the food was subpar, and the prices a tad high, I also found the service to be strange. Our server seemed a bit distracted while he tended to our table--in fact, he didn't seem interested in us being there at all. Unfortunately, this element pushed a three-star review down to into the two-star range. -

1. It's not clean. Dishes are kept on tables until someone sits at that table. The restaurant appeared to be a ghost town, so the dust is caked on the water glasses.
2. OUTRAGEOUS PRICES- $15 for a cereal bowl size of butter chicken and chicken tikka (price does not include nan or rice)
3. Obviously watered down sauces and the meat was no where near tender.
This place is disgusting. If you want EXCELLENT food, go to Standard India. (I think on Belmont) Huge bang for your buck, incredible service, and the food is outstanding! -

ordered from them using http://grubhub.com First of all it took an hour and a half to get here. When it did arrive it was cold and actually tasted a bit spoiled. i had the tandoori chicken and rasmali which had a bad spoiled after taste. The naan was good, but would have been better if it was still warm. Samosas were good. The delivery guy tried to act like he didn't have change when he owed me about $16 in change and was on his phone the whole time that I was trying to ask for my change. I also requested that they call when they arrive as my buzzer doesn't work and they didn't do that either, in fact he tried to leave after ringing it once. Worst experience.
