I'm upgrading my rating, because Vespucci's continues to upgrade the experience. They recently took over the other half of the building (previous rental was to a nail salon), broke out the dividing wall, and doubled the size of their dining area. It now is more spacious and, more importantly, less noisy and claustrophobia-inducing. I spoke with one of the owners, who said that this was the space they had wanted in the first place. Walls and ceilings are hand-painted murals, and the food remains way over my little town's head (that is to say, send your out of town guests there if they want an excellent meal!).

It's a solid place to go when you don't want to be eating pizza off Formica. The owners did a… Read more »

Cheshire, CT
I don't like their sauce. It is orange and tastes canned. Seeing that the sauce is on most of their offerings, I don't like their offerings that much.
It is a very nice restaurant; a better dining experience than Rossini's or Mr. B's. The pizza is not as good as Rossini's or even Grand Apizza, but acceptable. Again I come back to the sauce. The crust and toppings are fine, but that awful sauce is still there. My mother makes the best sauce in the world (not biased at all of course) so I am quite picky.
I want to like this place as a more upscale Italian restaurant in Cheshire, but just don't.
If you are in Cheshire for just one night, I recommend Rossini's. -

I'm a regular here, and for one reason only, the beef short ribs. I've tried some of the other stuff and find it to be standard Italian fare. But the beef short ribs are oh so delicious. The meat is tender and falling off the bone, and the sauce is rich and savory.
In recent years, I've noticed the prices go up bit by bit. Because I'm hooked on the short ribs, I've been fairly price inelastic, but it's starting to sneak into that range, where you start questioning whether the restaurant should be in your regular rotation of restaurants, or if it should be reserved for special occasions. Problem then is, I don't think it's THAT special... so then we're in that gray area of "priced like a special place, but not really a special place".
Try the beef short ribs while the prices stay somewhat reasonable. -

Oh, Italian food. It's the bane of my existence. I love it, but it isn't the most healthful thing to eat, so I try to save it for special occasions. One such special occasion was my sister's graduation dinner -- we went to Vespucci's on a whim and were pleasantly surprised.
When you walk in, it looks like any other pizza place with a takeout window to the left, but to the right is a quite nice, but small, dining area. The five of us were seated in a cozy booth by the window.
The server was very pleasant and accommodating. We had my rambunctious 5-year-old nephew in tow and she took it in stride. Drinks and appetizers were ordered and served pretty promptly. The calamari was sort of bland tasting, but the crab cakes were very crabby which means delicious in my book. The bread was warm & soft and the olive oil mixture for dipping was good, with lots of garlic and a bit of a kick. Typically I don't care much for the salads at a place like this, but a spring mix instead of iceberg was an awesome surprise, and any starter salad featuring red peppers is automatically better than most.
We each opted for Italian entrees rather than pizza or grinders. After quibbling with my mom over who was going to order the seared diver scallops, I think I came away with the winner of the evening. The dish was, in a word, perfect: the scallops were large and tender, the sauce not too overwhelming in flavor or amount, and the pasta (I substituted whole wheat penne for regular angel hair) was delightfully al dente. I was also glad that the portion was not ridiculously large or small: after some bites of the appetizers, two slices of bread, and the salad, it was very satisfyingly sized. I can also say that the chicken vespucci (my mom's second choice: a juicy chicken breast with stuffing, topped with sauce & cheese) was very delicious. Had I -

We've dined in before, but more often, my husband and I do take-out since we have little guys who are in bed. The last 2 times, I have ordered the lobster ravioli but asked them to make an exception and do a vodka sauce instead - in a word, AMAZING. They should add it to the menu regularly. My husband gets the eggplant and loves it. For the very reasonable price, we each got a large salad with plenty of dressing, and a huge loaf of bread (not that I needed it, but nice anyway!) They're always very pleasant on the phone, the food is done when they say it will be, and it's nice and fresh. I love that it's right down the street from us!

Great word of mouth advertising on this place and it definitely has it's regulars. Went with family from Cheshire area and we were pleasantly surprised.
While there was nothing to complain about, there was nothing to rave about either.
Had the linguine with clams. Was a mix of canned clams and fresh ones for appearance. Had loads of garlic and was okay.
I would give them another try if in the area and family wanted to go. -

Vespucci's is a great spot for affordable, classic Italian food. I have eaten there many times, as well as ordered food platters for a party. I believe they do take out orders also.
When you eat in they give you bread with a delicious spicy olive oil with fresh garlic slices, always a hit with my family. They have a wide range of options for dinner... pastas, seafood, beef, pizza, subs and such. Additionally they always have a few specials. My favorites are the Salmon Mediterranean and the Tortellini Napoletano. The portions are a nice size. Another plus is the reasonable wine prices. I would highly recommend Vespucci's! -

I've been here a couple of times, for living down the street from this place.
They offer your standard selection of Italian fare, with a smattering of pizza and grinders because I guess every other Italian restaurant in Cheshire does the same. I agree with what another reviewer said in that it appears the owner wanted this place to be "upscale" but seeing as to how we're in Cheshire, "upscale" really wouldn't work.
The food is hit-or-miss. Some entrees are delicious (anything with beef or lamb comes to mind) while others leave a lot to be desired. The most recent time I went I had their risotto, which was terribly bland. Their saving graces, however, come in what other members in my family ordered - namely their vegetable pizza and the chicken parmigiana, which were both quite good.
The ambiance is nice, but quite variable depending on the night.
We did go there on a really busy night, though, so that probably affected things somewhat. I will try them again on a slower night and see if there's any measurable improvement.
My only other gripe is that they don't take reservations over the phone. -

I have heard good things about this restaurant, but I will tell you that I must have gone on an off night. We started off with the bread which was delicious with the olive oil dipping sauce. I loved that they used sliced garlic and green peppers. It was truly amazing. After that though it was all downhill. We decided to order an appetizer so we got calamari. It was OK but by no means something that I would go back for. I feel like it was precooked and frozen rather than fresh. Then I had a salad which was soaked with Cesar dressing. I like Cesar, but at some point there is a concept of to much. They definitely hit the mark. For the main course I decided on the baked raviolis, which again tasted like they were bought them from the local grocery store frozen. I do not know if they make anything fresh, but if it didn't taste like chef bouradee made it that would be awesome.
As for the decor of the restaurant I really liked the setup of nearly all booths over tables and chairs. The waitress really wasn't that friendly either. The place was empty and it seemed like all she wanted to do was to get us to pay so she could have her tip. Not very friendly and inviting.
I have really heard good things about this place so I am just hoping that I caught them on an off night. -

To be honest, my favorite part of eating here is the garlic infused olive oil and ciabatta bread they give you while you browse the menu. The huge hunks of garlic floating in the oil is awesome (just make sure your date is eating it too). I also order the same thing every time I go, the gnocchi, and its killer. I've tried their ravioli and its also good, but I recommend the gnocchi.

Vespucci's is one of the better local pizzeria/italian places around Cheshire, but it's not new york, its not new haven, its not chicago - it's just some pretty good pizza.. i have also had their ravioli and it was not bad.
