My favorite place in Brattleboro...hands down.

You step foot into the Vermont Country deli and wave of scents and warmth just wash over you. The fresh baked bread...the smell of chocolates...and that's just the smell! When you walk in it's a visual spectacle - exposed brick and wooden planked walls, exposed ceiling beams with various country baskets hanging from hooks...springs of berries, garlic, and herbs hanging down as well. There are huge displays of local Vermont products...like Tom & Sally's...Grafton Cheese Company...Lake Champlain Chocolates, etc. And of course...maple syrups in every flavor...and maple sugar candy in every shape imaginable.

They serve the best overstuffed sandwiches I've ever tasted...and they have some of the best side-dish salads you can purchase in the area. It's on the expensive side (and I chalk this up to being a potential tourist trap given that it's just over one of Brattleboro's little wooden covered bridges). Honestly, it doesn't deter me at all...I love it.

This place is like crack for people who love trying gourmet flavors, stocking their kitchens with jars of mouth-watering sauces and dips, or gifting exciting regional bottled yummies.  It's more expensive than Trader Joe's, but OH what a treat it is!  If you're heading north on I-91 towards NH or VT, definitely make a stop at this cornucopia of delights.

On our way back from visiting a friend in Keene, NH, my friends and I dropped by VCD for lunch.  All of us stocked up on assorted bottled happiness and also picked up grub for the road.  Forty buckeroos was a bit of a splurge for:
- a jar of spicy corn relish
- a jar of mango chutney
- a jar of dense raspberry preserves
- a bottle of Fig Vidalia marinade
- a big bag of Deep River Sweet Maui Onion Kettle Cooked Potato Chips
- a small bag of Madhouse Munchies Sweet Mesquite BBQ Kettle Cooked Potato Chips
- a gigantic chocolate cookie the size of my head
- 2 large bread rolls, and
- a small container of BBQ pulled pork from the deli (enough to make 2 sandwiches).

Oh goodness, I think I just listed all that for my own benefit bc I'm salivating now.  Parking - the lot is appropriate for the size of the store, but they seem to get such good business that their parking lot would always be full (but there's good turnaround).  Too bad they don't have an eating area either - BUT it's a worthy sacrifice; we drove down I-91 a bit until we found picnic tables at a nearby rest stop (it was a warm Fall day).

We stopped here for breakfast on Saturday morning.  Walking in we were amazed.  Everything looked picture perfect.. The treats, the sweets yummm.

Mom ordered egg and cheese on a plate, no bread.  When she gave my order the man behind the counter got annoyed and said "we only have one cooker at a time!"  I am still shocked that this well known deli is serving "dunkin donuts style" pre packaged eggs (you know those flat kind fast food places serve) Don't get me wrong it tastes good but when you want Deli food/cooking you would just expect eggs made on a grill,.. I don't know seems odd because I saw people in the kitchen area cooking... I guess microwaving eggs are more convenient ...That is when I decided to change my order to a bagel with cream cheese.  (which I might say was more like a Lenders or prepackaged bagel as well)... but I shouldn't really complain, NY bagels are incomparable.
Coffee there was Starbucks brand.  It was tasty but I was surprised  that they didn't use a more local brand.  Seems like this town likes to support one another with local ingredients..  I did not find the prices to be unreasonable or pricey (like some other reviewers).

The Vermont Country Deli is a great place to stop for a bite, conveniently located off I-91 at Exit 2. I stop in here on my rides between NY and NH. This gourmet shop and deli offers tasty deli sandwiches, paninis, wraps, tasty cold homemade salads, green salads, soups, pizza, quiche, entrees, fresh baked goods, specialty gourmet items (Stonewall Kitchen & made in VT products), cheeses, fresh brewed coffee, and bottled drinks. The food here is on the pricey side for the area.

The Roundabout Russian Sandwich (roast turkey, Swiss cheese, sprouts, lettuce & Russian dressing) rocks! I really enjoy those BIG COOKIES, $2.17 each with tax. The Chocolate Chip Cookies are sooo good!!

Doesn't a place like this seem like it would be a good choice? Easy access off the highway, prepared foods, quaint interior.  Here's the problem: the food isn't good and this is a food store.
For some reason it took me a few stops here to figure it out. To sum up the experience, I turn for inspiration to one of America's most eloquent orators of the past century:
Fool me once, shame on  you. [...] You fool me you can't fooled again.

Vermont Country Deli: you shall not fool me again.

Wicked expensive, wicked good. This deli is right off of 91, and if you happen to be in the area (I'm usually driving through from CT) and are hungry (or even if you're not), get off exit 2 and stop in for some grub.

I got an insanely good maple bbq pulled pork sandwich here. I would marry this sandwich if it was legal. And who knows, give Vermont a couple more years and it may be!

This place totally rocks. I can pretty much guarantee that whatever you get is going to be awesome. You'll know it as soon as you walk inside.

The sandwiches and whatnot aren't too badly priced. Just be careful if you get caught up with all the gourmet groceries they offer or your mouth might drop when you get to the register.

Neither all that country nor all that deli, this is a good place to stop if you've got a carful of hungry people and no one can agree on what type of food to eat.  Of course, chances are a whole lot of other people with Connecticut and New York license plates had the exact same idea, so you'll probably have to edge around people who stand in the middle of the store taking up the maximum possible amount of space and then wait in line with people who exude the "I am much too important to STAND IN LINE" vibe so hard it'll hurt ya.  Baked goods look a lot better than they taste and are hit-and-miss re: freshness, so skip 'em and go straight for the chocolate.  Prices on the high side for what they offer.

If you want a quick study on how to rip-off folks from out of state while they pass through on their way to all things skiing, head into this place. Are the sandwiches reasonably good? Yes. But everything is insanely overpriced, and all of their baked goods come frozen from sysco out of a box. The parking situation is absolutely ridiculous and I can't count how many times I've nearly collided with someone trying to pull out when I drive by.  I'm glad it exists only because it satisfies most of the tourists and keeps them out of the places I actually like to eat. But make no mistake, there's nothing really "Vermont" or "Country" about it. You want a Vermont Country deli experience- go to the Wardsboro Store or the Newfane Market!
