what should one do if it's 80 degrees outside on a friday afternoon and you just want to explore central virginia? that was my question to a friend and she recommended going to veritas.
i hopped on my vespa and headed up 29 north and made my way over to afton. i pulled into veritas and was instantly delighted. i was so delighted, in fact, i took a picture on my phone and it is currently my background on my phone.
from the small parking lot, there are rows of vines in front of you and on the right of you. the winery is straight in front of you and looks like a large farm house with a wrap-around porch. the open lawn with chairs and tables spread out and the surrounding "mountains" (forgive my colorado-native view of the appalachians) yield an awesome outside area. if you would like a good ol' southern porch sitting, feel free to utilize the chairs or the tables on the porch...you can't go wrong no matter what you do. walking inside, the decor instantly has a classy feel with plush leather seating and a dark ambiance. staying out of the summer heat may be a necessity, so being inside is an optimal choice as well.
feeling great from my vespa ride and the aesthetics, i was ready to do a tasting. i forget the lady's name, but she was originally from england and was very welcoming. there were two options for the tasting - the regular and the reserve. the regular tasting (consisting of about 4 whites and 4 reds) was free and the reserve tasting (consisting of about 6 total) was $5 (unless you bought a bottle of reserve wine which would waive the tasting fee). i opted to do both and felt happy about doing it.
all of the wines were fabulous, but the one that stood out above the rest was the chardonnay. it was the best chardonnay i have ever had. it wasn't as dry as chardonnay normally is, but it had a nice, smooth, buttery feel, with a crisp pear and apple taste to it. a couple who was sitting on the porch when i came in had recommended the chardonnay to me and they were enjoying a bottle themselves.
another unique wine that was on the reserve menu was a dessert wine (i forget the specifics of the name or type) but it had a very unique smell of roses and a touch of honey taste. it was an award winner, and i would recommend the reserve tasting for this wine by itself.
i felt lucky to leave with a bottle of their chardonnay and happy about having spent the afternoon there. it was probably the best afternoon spent in my tenure in central virginia. it made me appreciate life more than ever before.
unless you don't want to have an exceptional time, don't go to veritas. if you want to have a refreshing and invigorating time, put veritas on the top of your list. go to veritas. you won't regret it.

Good friends of mine invited us to check out one of the Starry Nights concerts that they have during the summer. The atmosphere is great if you are craving a nice summer night spent in the country. I am usually a red wine person and every one that I have tried was great. I especially enjoyed the Claret. They have a menu available for additional cost above the price of admission, but we opted for a picnic style dinner and multiple bottles of wine. We walked through the vineyard for a bit before dark and finished the night hanging out near the bonfire. I will be back for a tasting one weekend in the near future.

I love Veritas, it is worth the trip. They used to do tastings on a porch to the winery and now have a beautiful lodge-like building for tastings. I think their wines are great, their have a nice complexity of flavors. Unfortunately I don't see Veritas at many DC wine festivals, so get your friends and make a day trip out of it.

My friends had their wedding here a couple weekends ago. The place is gorgeous! The ceremony took place outside where it was just very peaceful and perfect. I'm from the DC metro area, where peace and quiet rarely exists.
The wine was fabulous (I don't remember all of the ones I tried, but the cab franc was good!). The food at the reception was quite delicious, which I think is catered by Veritas. Though not sure how available that is, when you're there for wine tasting vs. a wedding. The reception was held in their banquet room which was very elegantly decorated.
Overall, I was very impressed with everything. And we were also very lucky that the rain held off till the next day. I would definitely want to go back for a wine tasting/vineyard tour sometime!
If you are out with friends for the weekend--what do you do? Go wine tasting and then stop at the first vineyard because it is perfect. The tastings are $5 for 7(-ish) whites and $5 for 6(ish) reds. The tasting room is large and open with leather chairs and fireplaces, with the ambiance of a warm, country lodge. If you decide to purchase a bottle the tasting fees are waived, which is fantastic. You can also buy a bottle and a cheese plate (or bring your own food) and sit on the veranda overlooking the vineyard. We stayed the whole afternoon relaxing in the Adirondack chairs, drinking fine wine and munching on good cheeses. (check out the pick your own strawberries down the street before you come to the vineyard, too.) This is a great and affordable date place, or just a fun place for friends to hang out. As we were leaving a wedding party was arriving and the space looked perfect for it. All of our C-ville friends recommend Veritas and now so do I.
I love the new wine tasting building here. Large bar with nice fireplace. Bring a picnic and have lunch outside on the deck. I really think their wines are excellent here.
