First time at the club was on Friday, but I was volunteering for a LitQuake event (the Goth Hop).

Really nice space, the folks on the clock were very cool, prices at the bar were totally reasonable ($5 at all hours for a well drink--that's fair and honest, and they made 'em pretty well).

Guess I'll have to come back for something else sometime to really judge, but definitely liking it after this visit.

Often used to come here on Tuesday nights for Stompy Jones (social dancing). It's a great location because Slow Club is right across the street and there is usually plenty of street parking.

The floors were being redone or cleaned somehow when I had my last classes here months back so the floor was oddly sticky in places but I'm sure it's probably fine now.

They offer beginning and intermediate Lindy classes on Tuesdays as well as other variations of swing style dancing.

There is actually a bar so you can even get a drink if you like.

Overall fun venue with good music, worth checking out if you enjoy dancing or want to learn/get a refresher in Lindy. Check out their website for current classes and more detail.

...Also check out 9:20 Special on Thursdays if you enjoy the combo of taking a class + social dancing after.

fun, fun! come on tuesday to hear a smokin' live swing band, stompy jones, and bust out your moves on the dance floor. young and old, hipsters and geeks, if you told me i was somewhere in kansas in the 50's i'd totally believe it. be sure to check out the hysterical photos dating back decades in the stairway. one dude has these thick black groucho marx eyebrows. just awesome. i'm so glad historic places like this remain in SF.

and ladies, don't be afraid to wear a skirt!

What a cool venue!

I saw a Porchlight stand-up thing here and loved the ambiance.  Even all the way in the back, you are still fairly close to the stage.  They have a bar [always a good thing] with a good selection of beers by the bottle.  There is even ample street parking around the corner, a luxury in San Francisco.

I look forward to attending more events here.

Swing dancers should know that Verdi Club is the place to go dancing during the week. To start things off, parking is relatively easy. I can't say it enough, it is San Francisco, so parking can be a nightmare but not here. At least, I've never had to park more than 2 blocks away. Not sure as to who's car it is, but there is a nice vintage car that always sits out front right by the entrance - great way to introduce the vibe inside. Walking in, you automatically feel like you've been transported into a different era. Stompy Jones is playing live and in my opinion, one of the best swing bands in the Bay Area. There are always a ton of people dancing and always someone willing to dance. A nice plus is the bar near the front so if you aren't in much of a dancing mood, you can hang out there with friends & grab a drink. Lots of regulars here...I think this is the place where all the swing dancers merge together for a great night of dancing. There seems to be dancers of all levels here - from the beginner to the super advanced...which is great for everyone. I highly recommend this place - Verdi Club on Tuesday nights!

As an out-of-towner and big fan of Stompy Jones my friend (who flew in from LA and is good friends with the band) and I made our way down to the Verdi Club last night.

It was good to see Stompy and hear the new singer, Christoper. What a smooth, silky cat he was last night. We really enjoyed his vocals. The band was great - no surprises there. A part of me really misses Pops, but we know he would want us to enjoy the band.

Beside the full bar (a rarity among California Swing Venues) I really like the layout of this hall. The floors were fast and clean - optimal for fast Lindy's and Stompy tunes. I appreciated touches of ambient, low lighting through the sparkling chandeliers.  It's also good to see folks really get into the spirit and actually dress up for a Jump Night.  As one beloved swing dancer once said to me, "Who ever introduced bicycle shorts to swing dancing should be shot!"  Keep those zoot suits and 40s-inspired dresses alive!

So, the locals were friendly, welcoming and there are a few good leads to be found at Verdi. All in all, it was an enjoyable evening we got back to the hotel after 1am - not bad for a Tuesday night.  Hope to see everyone at Frankie Week in NYC!!!

After months of searching for a reasonably affordable wedding venue a friend suggested the Verdi Club. (It would have been perfect for us, if we hadn't already found an outdoor location that we fell in love with.) There are many reasons why I would recommend having a wedding, or party, at the Verdi Club.

Denny is awesome- very accommodating, cool and mellow. I am sure he does an awesome job of making sure everything runs smoothly during events. He is easy to talk to, and just seems like a good guy.

The costs, which you can see on their website, are very reasonable most especially if you use their caterer.  The $2500 fee is waived if you have 100 guests or more. The convenience of having the tables, chairs, plates, glassware, silverware all on the premises is amazing! The setup and cleanup is included with the rental, which is also a huge plus! Denny will let you have friends come in and decorate before the wedding..

I liked the feel of the BIG room with the HIGH ceiling. It would be a great place for a theme wedding!

Another perk is the room upstairs next to the Ladies Lounge. This can be used as a play room for kids to go to and hang out in during a wedding. Hire a couple of babysitters!  I have many friends who got married way before me, and they all have kiddies now, so this offers the option of having kids at your wedding, and giving them their own place to play if they get bored. This was a big selling point for me.

All in all, searching for a venue for my wedding took a lot of time and effort.
It's not *Julia Morgan Ballroom* fancy, so if that is what you're looking for, this would not work for you. The Verdi Club is great for families, hipsters, you, and me.

The Verdi Club gets 10 stars from me! If you're having a wedding here and looking for a non-traditional vintage dress to go with the scene, shoot me an email, I have 1 fabulous dress for you!

They almost tempt me to try dance steps again - almost!

I've been to the Verdi Club for swing dance night (Tuesdays) and more recently for the fantastic Porchlight storytelling series.  The place is great - from the enormous ladies lounge to the old wooden bar to the not-too-large but just right ballroom.  It exudes the charm and history of times when going out for the evening involved elaborate dressing (for both sexes) and knowledge of the foxtrot.

If I were not a hopeless klutz when it comes to dancing involving remembering a sequence of steps, I would be here every Tuesday.  To be here when a live band is playing is really the way to see the Verdi Club come alive.

What a great historical club venue, sitting there under my nose all of this time, a jaywalk away from Slow Club.

Since 1935, the building has been open as a private club, and you can almost feel the swish of skirts and shoes twirling in constant motion as you walk across the beautiful wood floor.  The chandeliers are deco-fabulous, and the disco ball spins round and round, sending light all around you and making magic.

I came here for the first time last night, to attend Porchlight storytelling series (http://porchlightsf.com/) and was so pleased at their choice of the Verdi Club as their new home.  The acoustics were great and the vibe was retro-festive.  I loved the separate bar room, and the bartenders were nice and efficient, handling the crowd easily.  The only drawback was that the stage is very dimly lit, making it hard for these old eyes to focus on the performers.

But the best part of the Verdi Club?  The Ladies Lounge.  It's upstairs on the 2nd floor and is HUGE, in an old country club kind of way - you almost expect to see a bathroom attendant handing out towels and find cans of Aqua Net on the counter.  Couches in bathrooms - yes, please - we need this kind of space for "freshening up" with our friends and indulging in a little gossip.

As well as hosting numerous dance lessons and activities, it would make a great choice for a wedding or party.  I love a place that makes you feel like putting on your best dress and grabbing a date for Saturday night. Dancing shoes on!

Taste the vibes of a by-gone era and visit this place!
I guess this is a swinging spot for  swing dancing, but i happened therefor their 'porchlight' storytelling w/ beth lisick and company. I guess it was an italian american hangout back in the glory days and you can still feel it. Not much upstairs but there was some cool old photos from the past, and the bar/lounge era is pretty brat pack cool.

To quote my friend Colin: "Anyplace with wood is a good place to me."

Very cool layout and easy to manuever around, Verdi club has a very classic 1960's feel to it without being rundown and smelling like old people. You know what I'm talking about!

The bartender was super super cool - poured heavy on the drinks and paid attention to any water request I had on the side, even as their was a line of 20 people standing there that he had to service.

The women's bathroom is amazing. Perfect haven for hanging out and getting away from pesty boys.

Verdi was the first place I went out swing dancing after I started taking Lindy Hop classes -- my teachers dance there pretty often, and I finally worked up the nerve to go with them sometime this spring. I wish it were easier to get to via public transportation, but it's still a fun place to go out with a friend who drives...

The dance floor is smooth and spacious, and it's always nice to dance to live music; Stompy Jones, the Tuesday night band, plays a very danceable mix of fast and slow numbers. There are always a few very good dancers on the floor, and I found the crowd a bit intimidating at first, but people in general are very nice about asking for and accepting dances with people of all levels. Most people dress casually, though it can be fun to come with a friend dressed to the nines.

On Tuesdays there are intermediate Lindy Hop and Balboa classes at 7, beginning classes at 8, and I think there's a drop-in generic swing class at 9. The dance goes from 9:30 to 12:30, with two long band sets and DJed music in between and after. The floor can get pretty crowded during the first set -- good for Balboa or blues, depending on the tempo and your style -- but people start leaving by the second set, and if you stay to the end there's plenty of space to do swingouts across the floor.

The speak-easy bar and a 50's gym prom atmosphere provide an excelent set up for this dancing venue.

The San Francisco Jitterbugs taught here a while ago, and you can find East Coast swing, Lindy, Shag, and Balboa teachers, classes, and students here. I especially recommend Hep Jen.

And, there is a live band here EVERY TUESDAY. Stompy Jones is a fantastic band, period. I am still to get their newest CD, but I have to say, I am a big fan.

This is a great place for beginners, there are so many people that flock here that sometimes there is little room to actually dance.

Old school 'frisco- straight up, maybe with a lime twist, and perhaps served dirty- like my martinis, or..... well that's for another review

Going to Verdi is like taking a trip in the wayback machine- and looking at the pics of people getting rizzled from 1918 all the way till seeing the grandpas in stunnah shades of the 70s, its kinda crazy. But the crowd, and the generous drinks definately rock. When I ordered a couple shots of Sambuca, the wild gleam in the eye of the bartender told me all I needed to know- it was going to be a rough wednesday morning.

Tuesday swing dancing is awesome- complete with an awesome live band, and enough rockabilly kids, dancers and everyone else to really make you feel like you're in some kinda timewarp mashup. I danced my arse off, and i'm still aching today. Props to verdi- not so big props to my wednesday morning.

I go here as often as I can for Tuesday Night Jump, their weekly social dancing event for swing, shag, whatever.

I can't say a single bad thing about Verdi Club.  It's conveniently located, the bartender is always friendly and always makes my gin and tonic perfectly, and they even have swing lessons!  I've been to other venues (ie. Metronome Ballroom, ODC, etc.) where they also do the swing lesson + party combo, but no one does it better than the Verdi Club.  Their live band, Stompy Jones, is also amazing.  I bought two of their CDs.

Even if you can't swing dance, I say it's worth it to take a peek, have a drink, and have a good time.  Watching how good (and damn fast) people lindy hop is absolutely impressive.  And if you even go to take the drop-in beginning swing class and try it out for size at the party, everyone here is so courteous and easygoing with beginners.  It's a 100% positive atmosphere.

I swing dance and lindy hop a few times a week.  I love dancing to live music, and up-tempo stuff really flips my skirt.  I like to support local venues and local musicians.  I'm a sucker for a smooth wood floor.  When I'm not dancing, I like to sip a drink in a cozy atmosphere and chat with the bartender.

So, naturally, Verdi is one of my favorite late-night destinations.

A few weeks back, I learned something new about Verdi that made me want to write them an overwhelmingly positive five star review.  Here's my story: I arrived one Tuesday night and realized that I didn't have any cash on me to pay the cover charge.  But I had my checkbook on me, so I asked if I could pay with that.  They had no problem with it, and when I asked who to make the check out to, they said "Stompy Jones."

Me: Wait, the door fees go directly to the band?
Doorman: Yep.

Now if that isn't worthy of five stars, I dunno what is.

basically, i've never had an easier time planning an event than i did the one i planned with dennis at the verdi club.  i scoured the city for a place to have my wedding party/one year anniversary party thing and it was looking impossible.  i didn't need a fancy wedding venue, cause we just wanted to drink and dance and maybe bring our own snacks.  no actual wedding-like occurances were going to be taking place.  but i didn't want the normal bar options because they are not conducive to mingling and hanging out and meetings of mutual friends and families from around the world.  so, basically i wanted a wedding venue without wedding venue prices and wedding venue drama.  and verdi it was!

it has an awesome old timey ladies lounge style bathroom upstairs, a seperate bar area, a kitchen (you can use it for extra dough), a giant open space with a stage, and lots and lots of tables and chairs that come with the rental (which they will set up for you however you want 'em).  oh yeah.  also, there is a disco ball.

Not just for Swing dancing! On Thursday nights, one of the most popular Argentine Tango dance parties (it's called a "Milonga") happens here, and has been being held here for years. Interesting people from all wallks of life dress to the nines (or maybe just in sneakers) and come together from all over the Bay Area--and even Sacramento, to gancho, boleo, and molinete, the night away...

There's a stage for live music, and the ladies room is actually more like a lounge/dressing area. Plenty of room to prepare for an event like a wedding reception.

I didn't dance very much the night I went to the Verdi Club.  That's because the bartender got me drunk on pretty good vodka collins.

I arrived and was pleasantly surprised at how decked out people got.  Haven't been around that in a while.  So I sat down and waited for the class to end (which I'm sure is good but I don't want to pay for the basics anymore and I'm too cheap to go private) and got a drink from the very cute bartender.  And also very nice because he proceeded to serve me drink after drink with a charming smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye that spells the beginning of a fun night no matter how it ends.

I spent most of the evening chatting to him and the bar flies until I realized I came to DANCE.  Which I did to one song and then stopped as I was completely unable to keep balance.  And I had to drive home!!!  Shit!!!!  Anyway I spent the rest of the night chatting and drinking water (after much convincing of the bartender that INDEED I did have to drive home, and no, I had no one to stay with, and no that includes anyone here) and just had great time.  The regulars are welcoming, the building beautiful, and the bartender, well, is awesome.  It's been a while since I've been, probably a year.  Maybe they won't remember me and give me an equally welcoming reception when I don't have to drive!

I love this place!  It's like going back in time.  When people dressed with style and had class.  The verdi club has class.  That isn't to say that it's stuffy.  It's definitely hip.  The Tuesday night Lindy and Swing scene is fun and friendly.

The house band jumps for two sets starting around 9:45, and the dancers are awesome.  I'm a beginner but there's always a patient gent who will dance with me.   They have great classes for all levels in East Coast swing, Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag, Balboa and special classes too (check their web-site).

Other plusses - easy street parking,  big dance floor, comfortable coctail lounge, spaceous ladies lounge, nice bartender!  Go there now!

The best place for swing in SF.  Period.
My favorite venue is plesantly not renovated or modern.  The building is well kept up and looks to be the same as it was in 40's (my grandparents actually used to do dancing here!).
Tuesday Night Jump is where it's at.  Stompy Jones keeps the dancefloor full and the strong drinks keep everyone moving.  The lounge is classic SF film noir stuff.  Most people are in the mood (hahha pun!) with vintage attire, although there is no dress code offically.
I fancy dance venues that are truly about social dancing.  This is not a compitition, just a place to have fun and meet people who love to dance.  Hep Jen is an amazing instuctor, so newbies are welcome.  I would go so far as to say that on any given tuesday 25% of the dancers are new to swing!
Welcome to the worm hole.  You won't want to come back to the modern era.

Tuesday night at the Verdi Club is way cool.
The building is beautiful. Hardwood dance floor excellent live Swing band.
Great Swing classes.

Awesome Eye Candy. People are often dressed very retro / super hot 1940's style
And the peeps not dressed up are still cool to watch dance. This is also one of the friendliest venues for new swing dancers.

The bar always has bottles water for the thirsty dancers. I also hear that the drinks a nice and strong and not too expensive.

Anyone looking to learn how to swing dance take a class from Hep Jen http://www.hepjen.com

She is the best! If she could teach me how to do a pretty good swing out then she could teach anyone.

Went to this club on a Tuesday night for "Tuesday Night Jump" and I had the best time. There was a lindy lesson @ 9:10 or so but they have lessons from 7 until open dancing starts around 9:30. The lessons are series so I believe you have to sign up for 4 or 5 class sessions. Anyway, the class before the open classes is just a quick thing and when I went they showed side by side charleston with stamp and double stamp. The dance area is big and they had a stage where the live band "Stompy Jones" performed. They were great! In between their sets they had a D.J. playing music so we were never with out a dance. The vibe in this place is extraordinary. And the dancers there were also amazing (although the range was quite extensive from the beginner dancer to the pros) and everyone was having a good time. This is a great place to dance and probably take classes. They teach Balboa, which is the next thing on my list to learn so I'll probably catch one of two of that series. This is definitely where it's at to Lindy on Tuesday night in the bay area ($10).

I went to a wedding reception here and was pleased with the kitschy decor and the *very* generous cocktails.  When the food arrived late and the drunk hungry guests were bum-rushing the buffet line, I thought that was cute too.  I also liked it when the band (featuring the groom) was so trashed they could barely play.  Now THAT'S a wedding!

Great place for a wedding. 71 year old venue in San Francisco, is classy, historical, and has a warm atmosphere.  We loved the small lounge, used for cocktails.  In the main space, the stage is high enough off the ground that all the party guests and dancers can see the performers.  The space has wood paneling  which is cozy. I found the acoustics really perfect. The place is serviced with a kitchen for large guest lists, and the staff hired did their job well. I heard they have a fading Italian membership that keeps the place going.  I hope more young folks (x'ers and y'ers{though I hear they might be too narcissistic} ) become members to hold on to the past a little longer.

Yes, Tami, agreed. Swinging to Stompy always beats jiving to DJ's (regardless of their ability or taste.) Added bonus: the Tuesday crowd is friendly, enthusiastic, and varied-- as long as it's large enough. Hence don't come when the weather's crap because lots of the coolest cats stay home. Of course I write from a follow's perspective because I'm not clever enough to lead.

A last minute invitation to take lessons and dance the lindy hop and swing brought me to this wonderful dance hall, complete with polished hardwood floors, crystal chandeliers, a recessed stage in the back, housing a piano and a live jazz band, Stompy Jones (OH YES!), while people of all ages got their bounce and grooves on the dance floor.  Some men and women wore period clothing--very dapper in style. This is the regular scene at Verdi Club on Tuesday nights.  Be amazed and be ready to get swept off your feet when invited by strangers to dance the lindy hop or swing.  I was fortunate to have a few good leaders who were patient enough to dance with this novice dancer.  Always thank your partner after each dance.  I was also mesmerized by a couple of champion-level dancers as they performed awesome competition moves--I almost thought I was watching a live version of Baby and Johnny... or rather.. Fran and Scot.  If you still feel rusty on your feet, just sit back and enjoy Stompy Jones--a live jazz band specializing in the sounds of the 30s through 50s (http://www.stompyjones...).

what a cool ass spot.  been there since 1912, so has lots of history and charm. it's basically a big hall with a sweet little bar/lounge area.   we saw the incomparable swing band, Stompy Jones, play for the 1st Annual SF Collegiate Shag Contest, which was a hoot.   but you can catch the scene every tuesday night for the "tuesday night jump", (http://www.oldtimey.ne...)  where Stompy Jones plays and all the best swing, balboa, lindy hop, shag, etc..dancers converge.  it's a blast just to watch, but it makes you want to take lessons and get out there too.

I went last night to start my four week Lindy class series... it was so much fun! Easy parking (which anyone living in SF can appreciate) and nice people. I had an hour between my class and when my friends were going to show and I met five people. Super nice, great dancers (which is always good when you're learning!), it was a blast. Definitely worth the lack of sleep I got before getting to work at six this morning!!
