I LOOOOOOVE this store.
The ladies that work here are amazing.
The clothes and shoes are flawless. Some looking as though they were never warn.
It is a bit too spendy but... makes sense when they have clothes that are over 50 years old that are flawless right?
By far my favorite store in Hayes Valley. As far as vintage stores go, Ver Unica definitely isn't the biggest but the quality and assortment of items and the friendly staff makes me smile. They have amazing bags and clutches as well as great vintage statement jewelry like big obnoxious rings that I personally like to pile on until my hands can be used as weapons. They also have great dresses, skirts, belts and mens items too.
I recently left with a 60's maroon eel skin clutch. I spotted it as soon as I walked in and was prepared to pay a small fortune. I saw the price and kinda felt like I was stealing it because it was so cheap and had to call a friend immediately afterwards to gloat. I am usually not that lucky because the items are typically on the higher side, but it's for sure worth the visit.
Star off because, yes, it's pretty pricey. But, beautiful selection, wonderful owner, she's so fabulous and it's so fun to shop there. Check out the shoes and accessories store around the corner on Octavia. I found my dream boots there.
First off, I need to debunk a couple of myths. 1. There are still a few items for the guys (boots, jackets, belt buckles, etc) 2. NOT EVERYTHING in the store is over priced. Sure, a lot of the things in Ver Unica are on the spendy side and I'll admit, some ARE overpriced. Guess what, you're in Hayes Valley, not the Mission. With that said, I've found a couple of things that were exceptionally priced and some that were, without question, worth what I paid. So to me its seems like you get what you pay for at Ver Unica. My first trip in, I found the 2 items I had been searching for for weeks. A good pair of cowboy boots and a leather brief case. The briefcase was a Coach bag from the 80's. Its beautiful and rarely leaves my side. The boots were vintage Fryes from the 70's at a price that was unbelievable. $50 bucks? I think so. They don't come off my feet.
Cindy, the owner is a sweetheart. I'm not sure who all of you dealt with, but she always been more than helpful and kind. True, she tried to sell me a 500 dollar leather jacket. But hey, what good shop owner doesn't want to make a sale.
Yes, yes, yes! Finally, a vintage store I can count on to take all my money!
This place is so friggin cute. Their accessories are spot on - epic! Very cute sweaters, blouses, good stuff. Good vintage is always a tad pricier, but worth it. Ver Unica is a must for the true vintage-lover!
This place is ridiculously priced!
I just can't seem to bring myself to pay the amounts on the price tag when I'm used to an entire neighborhood of endless vintage stores in Australia.
And no, I'm not talking about the stores where the clothes have holes in them and smell funky...but stores just like Ver Unica with one off designer pieces....and when you look at the prices your eyes don't light up thinking you're about to pay HUNDREDS of dollars for a dress which was sat on, farted in, sweated in, and god knows what else back in those days.
I know it's not feasible to catch a flight down under, but I tell you what is reasonable...if everyone stopped paying these ridiculous prices, maybe then (just a thought) you'll see the price tags come down.
And once they do, you can buy your vintage number AND board a plane to sunny Sydney with the money you saved!
I always find something here that I just love! The problem is I can't usually afford it. When I do break down and purchase something, the staff are always helpful and friendly. Everything I find here is in good condition with no major issues, so maybe it is worth the mark-up.
In reality, we all could use a little more vintage in our wardrobes, and I'm pretty convinced that Ver Unica is one of if not the best place to shop vintage in SF.
I went today and picked up a couple great crochet tops and a coat, and no price tag was over $150. Yes, surprisingly expensive for vintage, but it's still a steal compared to the prices you pay at any boutique in the city for new designs.
I'll be back, and often.
My closet is thanking me.
Ver Unica is a store I am intimidated to shop in. It is way too cool for school. But I like it, so I pose hard core in there.
There are many dresses and sweatshirts I'd kill relatives for here--but I don't dare try to find the price tags, because I don't like to flinch in public.
Amazing vintage pieces!! Designer or not, everything is eclectic, unique and so fun....especially their selection of up-and-coming designers.
The purses and jewelry selection are out of this world. Everything is in superb condition and the ladies that work here are always on-hand to offer great suggestions & ideas to spice up your wardrobe.
Ungaro, YSL, Halston and... Joe's Jeans?
Ver Unica has a mix of high end recent vintage and modern designers at prices that are moderate to rather expensive, depending on what value you put on the styles of twenty to thirty years ago.
I'll admit, I get a lot more excited about 1947 Dior than I do about 1977 Bill Blass, and so most of their prices strike me as excessive. I don't write off the 1980's as a whole -- I'd maim for vintage Vivienne Westwood. But Ver Unica's selection tends towards the Dallas or Dynasty school of shoulder pads. Think power dressing, not punk.
For a vintage store, it has a clean, uncluttered and stylish shop, much more like a small designer boutique. I think for someone who really enjoys the boutique vibe, and who has a different decadeular preferences when it comes to vintage, it would be a great place to get a funky 1980s blouse and a brand new pair of designer jeans to go with it.
(Though, for the record, there's a larger selection of Joe's Jeans at any department store on Union Square, or even American Rag.)
Also, I had a rather funny conversation with the woman working there the first time I went in -- I told her I was looking for 1920's flapper dresses. She brought out a plain black silk 1930's dress. Trying to be polite, I told her it was pretty, but I was looking for something a little more glamourous, more formal, for a party. Something like the drop-waist beaded shifts you'd generally associate with "flapper".
She rather huffily replied that I *really should know* that in the early twenties it was wartime, and it would have been considered really improper, vulgar, even, to wear something beaded or flashy. Since WWI was over by then, I can only wonder if she meant the Irish Civil war, or the Greco-Turkish war of 1919-1922, but, either way, I don't think the fashion industry took much note.

Update 4 months later -- I gave Ver Unica another chance because I was killing time in Hayes Valley, and the salesclerk this time was much friendlier. Like the others, she was a bit confused about eras -- she was convinced a 1970s jacket was from the 1940s -- but she was much nicer about it, and the jacket was actually kinda cute. I almost upped the rating from two stars to three for this re-review, but my second visit reminded me again how silly their prices are. And so the stars stay at two, since most of their pricetags had more than two digits.
I was walking through Hayes Valley this afternoon and recalled Ver Unica as one of my favorite places I had stumbled upon a year or so ago.
Of course I was stronger then and walked out without purchasing anything, ummm today? Not so much.
Simply because they are one of the only places I have seen that carry this fantastic line of hand made earrings called "Round Designs" and I couldn't do it today. I just couldn't.
So I did.
And I admired all of their gorgeous vintage Chanel earrings, and the fun buckles and purses they had displayed all over the store.
A well set up boutique with clothes in great shape and style. It is a little pricey for my wallet but I adore the buyer's taste.
The girl who helped me today was super sweet and helpful in my indecision today on my ear baubles....So I give Ver Unica 2 stars for her and 2 stars for my new shiny earrings.
Nice selection, good condition vintage. Friendly people always make shopping in a small boutique worth it (or not) and the ladies here are really sweet. A fun place to find unique gifts that will become your friends' new treasures. Definitely worth a visit when I'm in Hayes Valley.
Do you guys remember Ver Unica when they were located in the Duboce Triangle section of town? Well, they moved and to Hayes Valley to boot. That made me sad. When they moved, they got rid of all the men's apparel and stuck strictly to women's wear. Now that makes me mad. But seeing that they are still doing well, that makes me glad. The ladies at this shop, know how to garment, the ladies who love to shop. So if you are a lady, shop this shop. Since I'm a guy, I don't frequent Ver Unica any longer (there's really nothing for me) but I always tell my lady friends about this place.
P.S. My lady friends are some of the best dressed dames in town.
i've been a devotee of the main ver unica store for years, and i'm thrilled with the new accessories store over on octavia. pricey, sure, but you're paying for a great shopping experience. literally EVERYTHING in both stores is gorgeous and very high-quality, often hand-altered or reconstructed to be that much better. selection tends to lean towards 70s marlboro-man western for guys and feminine or mod for girls. lovely jewelry and a hilarious selection of belt buckles.
Whether or not you like vintage clothes you have to admit, Ver Unica is a gorgeous shop and they must be doing something right because they have been in SF for at least 15 years.
I love going in there and seeing all the beautiful clothes. I can understand why some of the prices are what they are because of the impeccable shape that the clothes are in. These are not cheap, gross old clothes. They are vintage pieces that were expensive when they were new and have aged gracefully. There is nothing in here that smells or has holes.
The owners and employees are really nice too and even though I rarely buy they are always super nice. I hope Ver Unica lasts for as long as their owners want it to!!!
Oh that my friend Julia lived in SF instead of Seattle--she would love this store. She would want to try on the dresses, model the hats, adorn herself with jewelry, and sling a few of the purses over her shoulder. Then she'd probably purchase a few choice pieces for her collection and wish she could afford to buy even more. Sadly, this store didn't have much for me, but the next time Julia's in town, I'll be sure to bring her here.
Whenever I am in the neighborhood, I stop in there and leave with way too much jewelry. They have new and vintage stuff. The owner is super nice and even offered to replace one of my earrings that I lost (too bad I can't find the other one now).
They have really cute vintage clothes and handbags, as well.
This summer I fell in love with Ver Unica! While we could have started with a nice dinner together at nearby Absinthe, the denim jumper and shirts I bought here finally won me over. The owner and the shop-girls are all sweethearts, and while I don't always find something suitable for me, this store is in my heavy rotation for vintage stores.

Hands down the best vintage in town. But beyond the exquisite vintage clothes is a well-selected collection of new items from up-and-coming designers. There was a good 6-month period where I think I walked out of the shop with a pair of shoes upon each visit--some wealthy woman of a similar sized food apparently bought shoes that didn't get worn, so, bam, 30 years later I get to have the most incredible custom-made-open-toed-snakeskin spikes for less than $100.00. These gals know what they are doing and they provide a personal shopping experience for every visitor.
I love Hayes Valley -- it's filled with so many gems. Ver Unica is one of them. A lot of the things I said about La Rosa apply here too -- this is vintage paradise. Every piece is just flawless, and the owners are so knowledgable they can look at a piece of lace on a dress and tell you if it's late '50s or early '60s -- those are some skills. Pricey, but worth it for the beautiful clothes. They also carry some hip new designers and great-fitting jeans.
Nothing here really caught my eye except some designer purses perched on the shelves. There was some jewelry behind the glass counter but they didn't appeal to me either. I felt that a lot of the items were overpriced and I left slightly disappointed.
My new fave shop is Ver Unica in Hayes Valley. It is especially great if you are on a budget cuz you won't always find something you dig. Well, you will find digable stuff but cuz it is a vintage shop it won't fit so you will come back until you find a top that makes your boobs look fantastic and makes you feel like Natalie Wood in "Splendor in the Grass".
Reading the other reviews I am super confused. I must have only gone in Ver Uncia on severely "off" days because nothing about my experiences has been positive. Most recently, I went with a friend to check out their "annual Bridal trunk show". What a joke, we got there around Noon, when the shop was supposed to open, and waiting 20 minutes with 3 or 4 other costumers while sneering woman tossed brown and wilty Gardenias into the window display. A salesperson emerged and told us that the "floral designer would need a few more minutes to complete her masterpiece before we would be allowed to enter. Fine we waited. and waited and waited. at 12;30 they finally opened and allow customers to view the "trunk show".
1 rolling rack 3 dresses in semi stained condition does not a "vintage trunk show" make.
What a waste of time, the dresses sucked, and I seriously hope they didn't pay that floral designer very much... those Gardenias were well beyond dead.
Vintage couture in immaculate condition make this place one of my favorite spots in Hayes valley for a shopping expedition. They also have a great selection of custom and vintage jewelry, and wonderful purses.
If only they still had men's clothing. I am sad. But my girlfriend makes out well.
Really well stocked with of the moment vintage looks. Their cashmere is well cared for and I always find something I want. Prices are a tad on the high side...but if you walk out with exactly what you weren't looking for...you are happy.
This is one of the most overpriced vintage stores I have been to in San Francisco; used cashmere (not vintage, just old) sweaters for $90+, unspectacular, no-name vintage dresses for $200+...etc. The elegant, nicely set-up store and well-maintained clothes do create a nice browsing environment, but much of the same inventory could be had for hundreds less in a place like Idol Vintage on 16th and Valencia, or even eBay. Don't be fooled by the classy atmosphere!
I love thrift stores and consignment shops in general and this is probably one of the best I've been to. Everything is organized beautifully and you don't have to dig through bins or sift through funky stuff to find the beautiful, one of a kind, vintage items you crave. The prices are reasonable especially considering everything is restored and cleaned to new standards. I bought some Pierre Cardin boots here for super cheap and adore them. You can't even tell they are worn. I also came into a lot of vintage clothing from a grandmother and I'm going to be selling it to them since my thigh was the size of her waist...and I'm only a size 4.
Vintage Chanel baubles and earrings. Vintage Gucci bags circa 1970. What can I say? I love Ver Unica! I don't mind the prices - it's reasonable for such a well-edited selection of vintage clothing. Their vintage jewelry is GLORIOUS!
I came to this store and bought a few things ..good people..
