Went here the other night with friends and was pleasantly surprised with the Italian dessert/pastry selection as soon as I walked through the door. The place had a bit of a touristy feel to it which reminded me of Ghiradelli Chocolate in San Francisco. Maybe because of the wait for a table which took about 15-20 minutes on a Saturday night. Ordered a piece of Mocha Espresso cake. It was pretty tasty. One of the other items I tried which I liked more was the Raspberry Cheesecake. It was flavorful and not too dense. Very good and highly recommended.

Additionally, I decided to buy a pound of the mini pastries for Superbowl XLIV Sunday. I bought an assortment of cannoli, millefoligie, eclair, and tarts. I thought the price was reasonable. $12.50 per pound. Tried the millefoligie and thought it was great. I would definitely go here again but probably only for takeout items as the wait for tables took a while. Think  Veniero's has a great selection of delectable sweets to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Ordered the heart shaped cheese cake and the Strawberry shortcake for two birthdays in one and everyone loved it! Simply delicious!  I had tried the tiramisu at another friend's birthday and it was amazing too and the price is just right.

Their cakes has just the right balance of sweetness that you can savor every bite and crave for another slice =)

I've been eating Veniero's ever since I was in my mother's womb. Veniero's is a classic Italian bakery and stands out amongst the other bakeries in the area. I believe the bakery that was on the corner of the same street recently closed.

You can never go wrong with the cannolis, assorted fruit tarts, mini cheesecakes, and the pignoli amaretti (pine nut cookies), which I highly recommend. My favorite birthday cake as a child was always their strawberry shortcake or the chocolate strawberry-banana shortcake. After years of eating their shortcakes, I can never get tired of it. It's obvious why people come here a day or two before any holiday to beat the lines.

I knocked off one star from my review because the prices never seem to stop going up. On my most recent visit, it was $16 for a pound of pignoli amaretti. But I can't really blame them since it's New York and their desserts are consistently delicious.

My go to for cannolis

There's some stiff competition for italian bakeries in manhattan and throughout the boroughs... but Veniero's wins my heart every time. It's not just the cannolis... anything you try there is top notch and has the air of being homemade.

Great desserts at a great price.  12 dollars for a pound of the miniatures?  Yes please, and then I can take the money I save and set it aside for the lipsuction I will eventually need.

The Italian cheese cake is amazingly delicious, with a texture unlike most cheese cakes anywhere - get 2 pieces, one for now, and one for later when you'll inevitably crave it.  I ordered the Tiramisu for a party at work and was similarly impressed.  The person who helped me with the Tiramisu had amazing cake handwriting too; he could probably write better with frosting than I can with the pen.  Lastly, I'm a big fan of cannoli and loved the chocolate cannoli here.  Ahh I need to stop writing this review because I'm getting hungry for the desserts here again.

The one ding I will mention is that because of how tasty everything is, prepare to wait in line a bit if you come during the evenings.  Also, call ahead for their specialty cakes as they don't usually have any on hand.

Thanks to the Yelp App on my blackberry we were able to locate a good bakery after dinner.  (Thanks again Yelp for saving the day)

This place has been around for over 115 years (as stated in their menu)

I'm a simple girl.  Give me a cannolli and a cup of coffee (the cafe latte is great) and I'm happy.  I ordered a single large cannolli and they advised me that they ran out, but instead gave me 3 small ones.  Which I thought was even better.  It was the right consistency of cannolli cream vs the pastry. Perfection.  A friend ordered the mini tiramisu, and it was a stellar choice.  The outter neon sign seemed to be needing some new bulbs because it spelled "Veni" and lost the "ero's".  But I think this just added more to its "old world" charm.  The ambiance was nice, very Romanesque.  Expect to see lots of tourist, but no complaints...a good cannolli is a good cannolli.

BRAVO Veniero, BRAVO!

I can't tell you how much I love the desserts from Veniero's. Oh man they are beyond good. They have been making confectionery goodness since 1894. That's a mighty long time my friends, especially in New York City.

I've tried a few different things from their enormous dessert menu. The cannolis are heavenly, the cakes are divine, and the Tiramisu is orgasmic. I'm not even Italian, but I yearn for a visit to Veniero's for some Tiramisu and a cappuccino. It's sugar overload and not figure friendly, but it is so good that you don't care.

You can order from the bakery case and take your favorite tasty desserts with you or if you want, you can stay and get a table to enjoy right away. A word of caution though, while their wait staff are mostly friendly, they are very slow. Every single time I have gone in for a table, I had to wait quite some time to even be acknowledged. If you know this beforehand, you won't care. The perfection of the desserts more than make up for that lack of expediency.

Veniero's is open early and closes late. So you can get that early morning or late sugar craving taken care of quickly. It's a great place for after dinner or before a movie. It's in the trendy East Village and a short walk from bustling Union Square. It's well worth the trip.

I dare someone not to find a single item they'd like to order from this extensive menu. I Double-Dog-Dare you! Triple-Dog-Dare-With-A-Cherry-On-Top!

Speaking of cherries on top, draw your attention to the overloaded fruit medley that make up the pretty little tarts. And if fruits aren't your thing, Veneiro's got you covered with enough alcohol in their collection of desserts than some people have on their liquor cabinets. Still not your cup of tea? Try a hot chocolate, or some of their Italian coffees instead.

Words cannot express how happy I am to get boozy Tiramisu or a thick slice of cheesecake at midnight. Ask for the slice in the cafe from the daily fresh made cakes, not the mini versions from the to-go counter. This is my staple for cheesecake, offered crustless and in both the NY and Italian version. If you don't know the difference, a taste test will fix that right up. After all, they've been here since 1894, so they're doing something right.

So go ahead. I dared you.

I stumbled upon this place on my way to Buffalo Exchange. I couldn't help but notice the display of cookies by the window so I had to try to it.

I ordered half a dozen Italian assorted cookies (at 12.50 per pound), which were delicious; I took them to dinner with friends and they were gone in an instant!. I also ordered the Millefologie which was a pastry with flaky crust and bavarian cream; the crust was buttery and even though there was a generous amount of cream, it did not overpower the dessert. The key reason this place receives five stars is because of a dessert, that was absolutely delicious (but I don't recall the name),  what I can say is that it was the perfect combination of orange and dark chocolate on some type of sponge cake.

The service was great, the location is very charming, there is seating available inside and the orange dessert is definitely worth a try. Be aware that the prices do range from $3-$6 per pastry.

okay so i always had a bad omen about this place cuz my undergrad columbia interview was here.. and let's just say i was rejected from columbia - -;; ugh so you can just imagine how badly the interview went. UGH! but!! this winter i finally decided to try it.

and i LOVED IT!! :)) it's such a great place for dessert and just sit and chat and catch up with friends!

my friend and i ordered BANANA AND STRAWBERRY CHOCOLATE SHORTCAKE, this other really chocolate-y cake, and two HOT CHOCOLATES. it was all really delicious except the chocolate cake was soooooooooooo rich and sweet.

anyways-- i've had their tiramisu and chocolate covered strawberries before and they were all so good. THEY WERE ALL SO GOOD! i'm biased though.. cuz i'm a huge dessert person. :))

but in any case. if you want dessert at a sit down place.. TRY HERE!

My cousin introduced me to this place. The cheesecake is absolutely heavenly. It's so light, smooth, creamy, and fluffy, that it seriously melts in your mouth. My bf who doesn't really like cheesecake still enjoyed a slice. Prices are pretty reasonable. He got some cannolis here and loved them.

We bought a large cheesecake for my cousin and a small cheesecake to take back to DC. Our cheesecake survived the busride and was still quite delicious!

This place has all the desserts from the European sector in one place. They had desserts such as cheesecake , red velvet , canoli , eclair's, and more. It was a great place to try and I will send Diddy's contestants to go fetch me some cheesecake.

Best mini fruit tarts in NYC, hands down.

This place can be a madhouse for takeout but once you navigate through the counter crowd the dining area is usually pretty sparse.  Veniero's has been in business over a hundred years and the decor transports you back in time for sure.  You can really feel the history.  The pastry list is extensive, reasonably priced and everything I've tried has been absolutely delicious.

4.5 stars. Cheesecake was delicious - creamy, fluffy, light; like eating a cloud! I wish it had more of a crust because that's the best part! I've had cheesecake from Eileen's and Junior's and it was definitely comparable. I bought 3 frozen cheesecakes with me (about $26) back home and it was still good even after 2 weeks! My friends loved it so much that they demolished a WHOLE CHEESECAKE within 10 minutes.

The BEST PART though, about this place, are the ALMOND COOKIES! The filipino lady helping us at the counter probably knew this..and that's why she gave us a sample of the cookie for FREE. Next thing I knew..my friend and I BOTH bought a pound back with us ($17). My family ate the whole pound in 3 days!!!!

We also tried the chocolate mousse, but that was very typical and ordinary.

So, I stumbled upon venieros one night with my partner in crime of course who was all "OMG you've never had Venieros?" and I was all " Uh no...I said this already"

I wasn't expecting much but I was blown away. I've been here numerous times...at weird hours of night on the weekends even...and I've never been failed. The cheesecake is amazing, you feel transported to another place with every forkful. The Napoleon cake is to die for...the red velvet is sinful and I can go on and on with the bad analogies.

The coffee is usually good but is normally served one or two degrees above room temp. so I've had to ask for it hotter...much to my server's dismay. Service isn't their strong point so walk in knowing that so you won't be disappointed.

Cute date spot.

Go at least once for the history and the rum soaked cake!  This is a great fall back spot if you are dying for something really really sweet.
The italian pastries are totally classic and well made
I have not ever had a problem with the service. Usually have been waited on by one of several nice young Italian FOB guys who seem to work here.

If I was going to rate Veniero's on the delectable desserts alone, I would give it 6 stars!  But alas, there are other things to take into consideration... such as wait time... service... ambiance... and comfort.

The venue is small and cramped and you're going to be sitting on someone else's lap.  The key is to drown out everybody around you and focus on whatever slice of heaven you choose to devour.  Do not come here on a date.  It's too loud and you can be sure that the people beside you will be criticizing your choice of wardrobe or conversation topic.

The service is slow... no matter what day of the week it is, you will probably be waiting a good 15 minutes for a table.  There are no benches to sit on while you wait so you basically have to stand in everybody's way.  When you finally do get your seat, don't expect the waiter to be around for another 15 minutes.  On the other hand, they are extremely quick to bring your check.

My advice, know what you want and grab it to go.  It will be hard to decide once you get in there as everything looks so tantalizing.  My favorites:  NY Cheesecake & Strawberry Shortcake.  Mmmm!

I'm not a dessert person and used to hate when my sweet-toothed friends would drag me here...till I had their Italian cheesecake.

Made with ricotta, it's lighter and less sweet than its New York plaster-and-spackle counterpart. It is the only cheesecake I will eat.

The old mafioso vibe of the place weeds out any kind of "scene" so it's a quiet place to catch up with pals--and for other people to eavesdrop on your conversation.

Last night with my six friends...

Friend 1: Do you think you'd freeze up on a quiz show?
Me: Like when Alex froze up and Mallory turned out to be a genius?
Stranger at table in the back: I love that episode of Family Ties!
Me (leading a chorus of customers): Self Contained Underwater Breathing APPARATUS!!!

Veniero's is a New York institution. I hope it never changes.

Stepped in on a Saturday night around 10 PM and the line for a table was quite long.  There is a ticket counter system to serve you at the front for ordering pastries.  Within a few short minutes we got our pick of buttery italian pastries.

Tried the rasberry butter cookies, biscotti, and a coconut macaroon.  The butter cookies were sold by the pound and were quite tasty.  The macaroon had a lot of coconut flavor.

Since we had just finished dinner, we didn't try out any of their other desserts, which I'm sure they're more known for.  Will definitely have to try again.

I'm a little obsessed with Veniero's. I first came across their delicious, classic NY cheesecake way back before I lived in NYC, when my piano teacher would bring them to NJ (she lived in Manhattan). When I moved here, it quickly became my favorite place for cannoli, napoleons, and more. Coffee drinks and such are good, and it's a nice place to stop after dinner in the East Village for a coffee and a dessert. Also, bring a box of treats (delicious fruit tarts) home to your family, and they will thank you.

So I guess this may have turned into a tourist spot, some must see east village staple-which I am sure is why it took me so long to make it over.

The coffee is standard, desserts are standard, and for being 'authentically' Italian--It is a big let down in that aspect alone!

I can say I have been there and tried it--but nothing to write home to mom about! :)

Seriously...
With the quickness-
AWFFFFFUUULLL service. (Sorry, for me, service makes or breaks the place ). We waited for over 30 minutes (My cousin, his wife, and I order desserts, which were already made! Really?!- A cannoli, Cheesecake, and Red Velvet Cake)...
Direct Quotes:
:::over 30 minutes later::: (the people next to us came AFTER us and got their order first...)
Waiter: "Uh, there must be something wrong with the machine, they got theirs before you.."
Me: "uh, yeah"
Waiter: ::pulls out PAPER and PEN..AGAIN..:::: "Sorry, the machine must be broken. What did you order?"
::::awkward pause::::
Me: "Uhh, I'm almost positive you wrote it down. What do you mean the machine is broken? Where's the piece of paper you wrote it down.."
::::Waiter storms away::: SAYS NOTHING! what the?!
..5 minutes pass...
and he practically throws our plates on the table...

Honestly, the whole situation was funny, but really irritating! Luckily I was full from dinner so it wasn't like I was dying of hunger, but really?...

Oh well. I would say there is a plus side to this whole thing, but the dessert wasn't even that great! I've had better red velvet cakes at Amy's Bread! (Actually, one plus would have to be for the cannoli, it was good- not amazing, but good)..

Yezzz for old school bakery feel.  Take a number, smell the almond extract, peruse the panettone and choose what size strawberry shortcake you'll order....and if you want your cheesecake with or without fruit.

I love that it's crowded
I love that it's fresh
I love that you can get mini cannolis in chocolate and regular
I love that it's close enough to Union Square
I love that they'll write "happy birthday" on their shortcakes rightthen
I love the TWINE on the boxes... perfect
I love $12.95 for a 1/2 pound of mini pastries
I love LOTS Of pies stacked up for the holidays
I love the way their chocolate mousse is so pleasing to the eye
I love pastry window shopping
I love the tradition

Veniero's made me happy.  With all that said, however.... I know some place else in New York just chock full of old school Italian bakeries... can you guess?  Yeah, It's Staten Island.  Not that I'm bragging or anything... but we've got some stuff going on over on the pearl of the Atlantic... good old Staten Italy.

But, if you can't make it over the [insert ethnic slur for Italians that begins with a g] gang plank (aka, the Verrazano), it's perfectly understandable and this is a great option.

However, I wish they used buttercream in their strawberry shortcake.

Maybe I'm not really a cannoli fan.

Everytime I have one anywhere, I think, "is this what it's supposed to be like?"

I had one in Boston a few days before (Mike's Pastry), which was good, so I figured I'd try one here to see if it would be grrrrreat.

Also got a mini cheesecake and a mini cream puff.

We ordered, and asked if we could sit to eat them.. and they said only if you buy coffee.  Ok..  we found a seat and ordered coffee/tea.  It was Monday night, and it looked busy.  The surrounding neighborhood is not your typical Manhattan at ALL.  It could be slightly unsettling if you are alone, too.  A bit desolate and dark.  Maybe it's better in the morning?  Anyway, it takes about two days before the waiter arrives, and then another three days before he brings you a cup of hot tea.  Granted, they were busy and I think he was the only one serving the tables..  but that just means mama needs to hire more grandkiddos.

The cannoli was dry.. and overly sweet.. and the filling was also sweet.  I won't hold it against the place, because I think I may not like cannolis..   scary.  The cream puff was pillowy and yummy!  I liked the whipped cream filling - but I think they had a custard filling one too... for those custard lovers.  The cheesecake was good, but not as creamy as the one I've had at Del Frisco's.. best best best! :)  A little pricey, but it's to be expected of a pastry shop, especially in NYC.  This place is cool, as it's been around since I believe 1894(?), and run by the same family! :)

There's another pastry shop on the corner, right next door.. and I would try that one next time, too!

The cannoli are effing delicious. I can always count on a cannoli here.

Unless I sit; the service is abysmal. The waitstaff is rude and moronic (I've notice this changing for the better, slowly and recently), and take forever.

They also don't follow their own hours of operation. They always close early. It sucks when you check the time, see they're closing soon and run there to find that the closed 15 minutes early. Is the joke on me? Not sure.

Great place to re-fuel with something mildly sweet and coffee.

After eating at Katz we walked around LES to burn off the pastrami, we finally had enough room in our stomachs for something sweet.  We picked this place due to the history (as it's been in business since 1894). The front counter is hectic and should only be used if you have an order to go.  We needed a place to sit so we went to the dine in area behind the counter.  They have a full pastry menu and coffee bar.  The only complaint I have is that the pastries were not SWEET enough.  We had the scillian cheesecake, strawberry millefoglie and the windmill. All were ok NOT great...but because of the atmosphere, hazelnut coffee and location I threw in the extra star.

Forgot to yelp about Veniero, here's my long-overdue  review. This place is a hit-or-miss, I've had both unimpressive cakes (skip pasticciotto!) and pretty awesome cakes(especially chocolate kinds). The ambiance is old school and European, and overall I'd say this is a waaaay better alternative to the infamous Ferrara in Little Italy.

Most people seem to love cannoli, but I'm not a fan of this famous Italian dessert because I find them too sweet and heavy, and a bit bland. When it comes to Italian desserts, I'd only go for gelati, spumoni, tiramisu, fruits tarts, lobster tail/sfogliatella, zabaglione, profiterole, cheesecake, or chocolate-based cakes. I'm biased because I don't like cannoli, pasticciotti, panettone, baba rum, biscotti, torrone, zeppole, or any Italian almond-based cookies. I've tried liking them but I still haven't had any that made me change my mind. I've had the authentic pasticciotti in Lecce too, but I never understood what's so special about it.

Here's what I've tried so far:

1)millefoglie - ok, not amazing I prefer Cha-An's  mille feuille...waaaay better!!!
2)pasticciotto - I tried it after my return from Puglia hoping that there's more to it, but no, I still didn't like it. Too sweet, too dense and flavorless. After I had my first bite, I remembered I didn't like it. And I don't know why I still finished it anyway....*sigh* This is why I'm fat.
3)fruit tart - So-so. Most average American will likely approve this, but I had way better ones at La Bergamote and Ceci-Cela.
4)chocolate molten lava cake  - probably the best thing I've had here so far. Very chocolatey and delicious! But this isn't exactly a typical Italian dessert, is it??
5) cheesecake - If you like Juniors, you'll like this. Rich, sweet, and heavy. But I prefer cheesecakes from Japanese pastry shops....they are less sweet and light.
6)espresso - Pretty good. Well, it better be!

Note- Don't come here on weekend nights! Expect a long wait!

"Oooo, let's do potluck!!"

This was my go-to spot for those awful office "everyone brings something" functions. I cook, yes, but not for an office function. Because of this, I've tried a ton of Veniero's pastries and loved most. My favorites are their mini cannolis and any variety of cheesecake. So good.

For after dinner dessert on a date it's not particularly romantic, but it's cute, quaint and authentic and your date will likely fall in love with you after mistaking the experience for a visit to meet the family.

Sure, the decor is kitschy and the service is kinda slow, but, man...

...the CAKE.

I took two visitors here for a "New York cheesecake" experience. We ordered a slice of cheesecake with strawberries on top, a slice of red velvet cake, and a slice of strawberry shortcake, and all left very full and happy. The cheesecake was perfectly creamy, the red velvet was super moist (and delicious with cream cheese frosting), and the shortcake was nice and light. The coffee's nice too.

(And I've never had to wait to be seated. Super cozy on a cold night!)

One of my favorite dessert places. Love their tiramisu as well as their strawberry shortcake. It's been around forever for a reason, I guess. It can get pretty crowded here on the weekends, and the service is only so-so, but then again, you don't really come here for that.

Also, I enjoy watching myself as I use the bathroom. ;)

I will always give extra stars for old school or any part of New York City that has history and so Veniero's gets 4 stars.

Places where you can sit down, have an espresso and real pastry or cookies and gelato or italian ices are dwindling, and while Starbucks certainly serve a purpose (bathrooms and a place to sit with your laptop), they do not provide a nice place to sit and have coffee and dessert.

Places like Veniero's are as much a part of New York as the landmarks on the postcards and tshirts, and I really enjoyed everything we ate.  Anyone who thinks its overrated is probably just reviewing the pastries themselves, in a vaccuum, and I dont disagree-- they're not the best I ever had.  But they are really good, and if you add in the environment, the style, the history, and you've got yourself a 4 star pastry shop.

It's a tooth fairy's dream depot...

This is one of my favorite spots in New York when it comes to desserts. They have a large, full menu of freshly homemade desserts from cannoli to cheesecake to gelato all with a crisp Italian flair. Several of my out-of-town visitors have fallen in love with the cheesecake -- this is a MUST at Veniero's. The prices are great for Manhattan with a fun atmosphere for those dining in.

If I had to limit my review of Veniero's to two words, I would choose "cake heaven." Veniero's is a full bakery, offering every kind of treat one normally expects to find at a bakery, but its specialty is cakes. This is the place to go in New York City if you need a special cake for a special occasion. I like to buy the strawberry shortcake for friends' birthdays. Veniero's will add a custom frosting message on the top of the cake for free.

When I'm in the mood to treat myself, I get a slice of the mocha espresso cake. It's a chocolate sponge cake soaked in espresso and topped with a cream frosting with chocolate shavings and mocha bean crunchies. It is unbelievably delicious!

Great atmosphere, food, service (even though it always looks kinda hectic when you first walk in).

I like coming here after spending an afternoon at all of the consignment shops in the area.

Lost a star for not having black and white cookies! Bah.

My cousin insisted we stop here for a dessert quickie even tho I was already about to explode from the eating rampage for lunch.

We ordered the tiramisu and the strawberry NY cheesecake.Tiramisu was ok, nothing too special and memorable. I've had better at other places where the cake was more fresh and moist. The NY cheesecake had a really strong cheese flavor. I prefer the sweeter cheesecakes.

On the upside, the portions are HUGE, prices are cheap, and a huge selection of other types of cakes and pastries. Cute atmosphere to come and chit chat with friends!

Very tasty cheesecake. I've never eaten dinner here, only had desert. There can be quite a wait during in the evenings. So grab a number quickly and then check out what is in the display cases. The cheesecake is very good and has a strong cheese taste to it more so than Junior's.

They also have a huge selection of pastries and other deserts. This is more than a pastry shop, it is a full fledged bakery with all the necessary items available. Interestingly enough there is no black and white cookie.

I prefer Junior's cheesecake to Veniero's not to say that Veniero's cheesecake is bad in any way.
