I've never been satisfied with a haircut until Ruthie gave me mine yesterday. After calling up a few salons in the 'hood (and of course, no luck in booking a last min appointment), I found awesome reviews of Velvet Roses and had to give them a try. The salon is clean & quiet and Ruthie was super nice. She gave me an awesome cut that she envisioned me with (exactly what I envisioned as well)! Plus, the prices aren't going to put a dent in my pocket. I'm definitely going back!

One of my biggest anxieties in moving to New York was having to find a new hairstylist. Call it pathetic, call it vain... call it what you will, but experiencing a haircut disaster will do that to ya. I'm quite selective in who I let cut this coif of mine and it was years before I found the right people back in California. Who knew how many mediocre cuts I'd have to pay for before I found the right stylist? Luckily for me, my first salon "gamble" was Velvet Roses and I won't have to take my chances with anyone else.

I tried to schedule with Maribel since she is the owner and there are so many glowing reviews about her. However, I got scheduled with Ruthie because she often works on shorter hair lengths like mine. My anxiety flared up again. I took a big gulp and hopped on the L to Velvet Roses.

My fear quickly dissolved upon meeting Ruthie. What I really liked about her was that she asked me several questions. To me, this translates to a genuine interest in giving the customer exactly what she wants. I could tell she understood that I'm trying to grow my hair out, but don't want to sacrifice style in doing so.

I'll be honest: when I saw the amount of hair on the floor, I freaked out. It wasn't until after Ruthie blew it out that I saw she had retained most of my length. It was just shorter in the back, to keep it fun and edgy. This was a compromise to myself -- which we had discussed prior to her taking any scissors to my hair -- in order to keep my hair as long as possible without having boring, one-length locks just sitting on my head.

In short, Ruthie was a doll and I'd be happy to see her again. She explained everything she was doing to my hair, which made each step truly comfortable. When I pointed out something I wanted tweaked after she finished the cut, she understood what I was saying and fixed it to my liking. Thanks to her, gettin' my hair did is one less thing I gotta worry about in New York.

Maribel is the best!
She really listens to you and gets an understanding of what you want before she starts. Not only does my hair always look great  - but she does amazing color!
My sister got her hair done and its the best I have ever seen it!

Highly recommend her - not only is she great, but she's inexpensive!
What more do you need?

I needed a new hairstylist so after serious consideration I decided to bite the bullet and make an appointment. After showing her a picture Ruthie started to work on my hair. She washed and cut my hair and then Maribel dried and styled it. It was exactly what I wanted. Bouncy and wavy and affordable. There aren't very many places that'll give you hair commerical hair for under $50, which is why I'll definitely go back.

Okay below is my first review...guess what I've gone back about 5 times(I think I'm addicted)! needless to say I love this place, Maribel treats all her clients with such tenderness  it's unbelivable! My hair has NEVER LOOKED BETTER! I always float out of there THANKS MARIBEL!!

This is by far the best salon in Brooklyn! The space is huge, the decor is elegantly simple, while waiting you are served with coffee, snacks and sometimes wine.  Maribel (the owner) has done an AMAZING job with my hair!!

aaah......I can honestly say I fell in love with Velvet Roses at first blow dry........

Before:
I'm going in this afternoon at 3 sharp hoping Maribel can fit me in. Rave reviews from my roommate Cassie and her man Gwyther. I'm excited. :)

After:
Indeed Maribel took good care of me! I brought a good book, as Maribel took me on only after telling me that she had customers sandwiching my slot and it was just her doing the work. So, I waited a few minutes, she washed my hair and then while I waited for her to cut another woman's hair, she did a deep conditioning treatment on my hair! So I got to read, deep condition and observe a piece of Billyburg in motion. This was the most productive I'd been in d a y s.

I went because I really needed a haircut to tide me over until I get a fancy pants expensive one for one of my best friend's weddings in late Feb. I think this might be my new routine. Fancy haircut twice a year, Maribel to keep me fresh.

I think this is a good plan. I think you should probably follow this plan, too.

I'll post a pic of my do (she blew it out, too, making it straight, which for some reason I'm incapable of doing, and I love :)

Go see Maribel. You'll be glad you did.

PS BONUS: Local woman owned business!
