THE BEST ONION RINGS ON THE PLANET can be found here--perfect golden brown batter, thick onion slices, all to be dipped in an awesome spicy ranch dressing.

The Millionaire Club Sandwich--sourdough toast stacked high with slices of real ham and turkey, yummy bacon, lettuce and tomatoes--was massive and came with a big side salad made up of very fresh veggies and sweet cherry tomatoes.

This spacious restaurant is housed in a very cool art deco building constructed by Bank of America founder A.P. Giannini in 1931 that was home to a succession of banks before Ignacio Velazquez renovated it to create The Vault in 1998.

Service at lunchtime was excellent. And prices were VERY reasonable given the portions. I'd give this place five stars if they had a single beer on tap along their very cool looking bar--I hear they're working on it...

THANK GAWD this place finally closed!!!!!

What a waste of money this place was.  Totally overpriced awful food..YUCK YUCK YUCK!!

I agree with Big J that the owner was trying to go for fancy in Hollister which is not going to happen.  I mean seriously how many fancy restaurants has Hollister every supported...I mean Paines is considered fine dining there!!!

The old good thing about this place was the location which is beautiful and that sure as hell wont keep you in business.  Good riddance to the Vault you wont be missed!

    UPDATE: THIS RESTAURANT HAS CLOSED

The food here is not good. It's not fair. It's bad. Really bad.

This place opened a decade ago tryin to be fancy schmancy and knock the socks off the local lunchtime snobs by making them feel important in a big building with a lot of character but no substance.

The lunch and dinner here are overpriced. The food quality suffers. The only things they can hit the nail on the head with are onion rings and fries.
Burgers lack flavor, pasta dishes here a bland and tasteless. Chicken sandwich is sub par as well.

I don't like this place and never have. Been here 1/2 a dozen times which was about 5 to many. I tried folks.....I really did.

We stopped here for dinner with some friends on our way back from a day hike at Pinnacles National Monument. This restaurant looks fancy from the outside but is really just a diner in disguise once you enter the establishment. Turns out, it's an old bank that has been refurbished in full 1930's style, so it features quite cool architecture which is fun to gape at.

Our friends have a 4-yr-old, and I must say, this place bends over backwards to accommodate the preschool set. They had special kids menus, and they even brought out carrot slices for our small companion to nosh on prior to our meal. There was a card on the table advertising Kids' Nights on Tuesdays where they have craft projects and playdough for little ones, allowing the parents to have a modicum of peace during dinner. Since we were there on a Sunday, there was no playdough in evidence, but they did have special sippy cups with cool kid-friendly designs on them for our little dining companion.

As for our meal: no beers on tap, but they had a limited selection in bottles. The food choices were pretty standard diner fare featuring a full page of burgers, some pastas, and assorted sandwiches. We were all famished after our day of hiking, so we chowed down on greasy burgers with HUGE side salads (VERY generous portions!) and fries. For dessert, we split a brownie a la mode--also a huge serving.

So: the Vault has cool architecture, is super kid-friendly, and the food portions were generous...so why am I only giving it three stars? Well, the food is kinda on the dull side. It's solid enough, but it's pretty much Denny's quality (i.e., rather greasy and uninspired). Still it's a good bet for a Sunday evening in Hollister, especially given the fact that the rest of the downtown apparently rolls up the sidewalks come nightfall.
