I have been going to this place for three years and have seen the same guy for three years. Dino has given me an excellent hair cut each and every time. He take his time, uses scissors for the entire cut, no clippers, and makes sure I am happy when I leave.

Aside from the hair cut he is great to talk about hockey, travel and Miami beach. Before ,Miami I always went to a barber, and after my experience here I will not go any other person.

Great selection of products, and though they are expensive there is always a sale that makes it a bit more reasonable.

My hair cuts cost $40 and are worth every penny

I discovered Van Michael Salon through a Facebook deal. They picked 10 people for 10 days to get complimentary coloring and haircuts to celebrate their 10 year anniversary. I was tipped off by fellow yelper Michelle Z. I entered the contest and got picked.

I came into the Salon with mixed feelings. How good of a job would they do since it's complimentary? Would they be just as attentive to as if I were a paying customer?

As I walked in I was greeted with a friendly smile. I was given a gift since it was my first time at their salon. After I filled out some information I was introduced to Alex, my colorist. +1 for not having to wait. He was ready for me. I explained to Alex that I wanted to get rid of the red in my hair and wanted to go lighter. He in turn explained that he would be able to do that but not this time. He needed to even out my hair color first. I have to admit that I was a bit annoyed by this, but said okay.

He started off with a quick massage, which I did not expect but totally appreciated. He made small talk. We talked about our lives and Miami and where we came from. He made me feel at ease and I relaxed a bit. He dyed my roots and told me he would gloss the rest of my hair instead of adding new dye. I was starting to question what the heck he was doing. After he washed out my hair, he conditioned it and talked to me on the best way to care for my hair, especially color treated hair. Once he was done I went over to Dani.

She asked what I was looking for. I explained that I wanted bangs and layers but I wanted to keep my hair long. She looked through all my hair and gave me her thoughts. She was receptive to what I wanted but advised that for my face shape it probably not look so great. I began to trust her once she began to show me how unevenly my hair had been cut and what she was trying to go for. She cute my layers while my hair was wet, blew out my hair and then cut wispy bangs and made adjustments while my hair was dry. She talked to me about caring for my hair and asked that I always come in for a trim every 3 months to make sure the hair is healthy.

When she was finally finished I was in awe. I saw the work Alex & Dani did and could not have loved my color and haircut more! Alex took out the coppery red in my hair, as I asked and evened out my color. My color looked natural and vibrant.  Alex & Dani are masters at what they do! I couldn't have asked for a better cut and style. As I walked out the door, clients and stylists all complimented my hair. I felt like a goddess!

Things I learned from my visit:

    1. ALWAYS have two different people color and style your hair. They should each be a professional at what they do.

    2. Although I expect my colorist and stylist to listen to what I want, they are experts at what they do. If they give you advice on colors and cuts, then don't be so resistant. Work together to achieve the best look for you. This is what happened in my case and I really love the results.

    3. Aveda is my new go to product.

I really liked this salon and especially loved Alex & Dani. I have an appointment with Alex in a month to lighten my hair, and I can't wait to see what he'll do!

10 year anniversary + facebook contest = free services!

I quickly found this salon because it's literally right next to lincoln road's mall & although I behaved with my shopping needs, I did not hesitate to buy two Aveda styling products from here.

Since I'm getting ahead of myself, I will rewind a bit and continue with that they're open on Sundays! I was able to get Dani's first appointment at 12 and quickly filled out a small information sheet for being a new customer. She was ready for me and was instantly interested in what I wanted done.

Having curly hair, I am deadly afraid to cut my hair with just anyone because not many people know how! It might look great when it's short and blow dried but not when I have to style it and I look like Shirley Temple.

Anywho, we went off to wash & instantly sparked up a conversation. Once at the chair, she confessed she wanted to do layers and I politely refused. No way! My hair takes FOREVER to grow & it's actually at a length I like. She went ahead with my wishes and when finished, brought the subject back up. She promised she would leave long layers and it would help give my hair more volume when curly so I actually trusted her. After the blow dry, I was very happy! It looked like the same length when I entered but healthier & the layers were minimal.

She took me to go over some products because she admitted from personal use, that Aveda works. I decided to give these products a try because I've been noticing normal hair products are not as great as they seem. My hair has become very dry and becomes so frizzy, it needs 10 pounds of mousse to be able to look nice and that's not the way it should be so I bought myself Aveda's phomollient and curl enhancer and I'm dying to try them out!

All in all, great experience, will definitely come back soon for color!

I went there last week, got an appointment with Rob.
The salon is big, busy but clean. They like when you're early and I was!
Once I met Rob, we went to his chair and discussed my haircut, then he gave me (sort-of) massage with some very light gel in my hair. Went to do the shampoo (very fast) and back to the chair. He only cut the back and my neck on wet hair, then dried them and cut the top on dry hair! Weird. Go figure. The haircut is ok, good but not great. He cut my neck too short though. $42 is not bad for SoBe but it's not the best haircut i've had.

i really just can't say enough about this salon. reception staff is always welcoming with a smile and offer you the aveda tea which is amazing. My style team Alberto & Jessica are amazing. Professional and sweet. I don't just see them as sylist/colorists, but my friends. They really make you feel at home every time. They always leave me looking fabulous every visit. The training staff is also great and professional. I've been there for almost 4 years i think and don't think I've had one bad experience. I've referred many people here. In addition i live down south by dadeland and have no problem driving to the beach. I'm in a committed relationship with them, :-)!!  They also have talent for different budgets, so don't be afraid to try them...

As far as the salon itself, I loved it.
The receptionists are friendly, kind and attentive; their customer service is five stars and they even have a tiny gift for first time customers, which I found very thoughtful.
I was introduced to Van Michael by Ginger when she informed me about one of their promotions, a FREE HAIRCUT, how could I pass that up? I couldn't. So I booked my appointment.
After my GPS got me lost and sent me to Flamingo Park, I called for directions I finally made it to Van Michael.

I checked in with the receptionist and her perky self offered me a refreshment and sat me down.
That's when I met Rob. He greeted me, fluffed my hair, did a small consult and we agreed on a haircut. He washed my hair (too) quickly. When I asked him what his tattoo was he didn't say anything, then he made a smart remark to the girl next to him about how he should tell people its a prison tattoo, that maybe THEN they would stop asking.

When we sat back on the chair he asked me if I had decided on a haircut. WHOATTT? I thought we had decided on this already. Ugh. Explaining it again was almost impossible. However, starting a conversation with this man was even more of a challenge. He kept talking to the hairstylists behind him. I know i'm not the most interesting person in the world but COME ON. He cut my hair in 10 minutes and spent 25 blow drying it. I wish he'd spent all that time cutting it and none blowdrying it. The cut was pretty, but very safe and boring.

I left a pretty good tip, but I would never go to him again.

All in all, if you're looking for a quick cut, Rob is your man, but don't expect small talk or any kind of talk for that matter. The experience a professional provides makes your career and keeps clients happy.
    I was not happy.

For some reason I have a hard time getting a good haircut in South Beach. I have been to several places over the years and I am never that happy when I leave.  I went to Van Michael for the first time today and Dino cut my hair and I was very impressed.  It was relatively quick and he did a great job.  I will be going here for my future haircuts!!

Desperately needed a trim and happened to pass this spot on the beach.  They were able to fit me in that afternoon.  The salon was busy, but very clean and modern, and all the reception staff were very friendly.  The man who cut my hair did a decent job, but he was a little rough when washing my hair.  Prices weren't bad, but the haircut was pretty basic, and the guy cutting it seemed like he was in a hurry.  Plus, like some others have mentioned, he spent more time talking to the other hairstylists then talking to me.  Would have appreciated just a bit more personal service.  Not sure if I'd come back or just try somewhere else.

So happy I found this place!  A friend of mine gets her cut here and after all the reviews I was ready to give it a try.  I've never dyed my hair, so I was looking for a modern "grown out" kinda look with lighter subtle "sun-kissed" tones at the ends of my hair.  Alberto new exactly what to do and took his time to understand what I really wanted and what would work with my hair/skin tone etc.  I was very happy with the results!!!!!  Natural looking and subtle. LOVED IT!

Siobhan cut my hair, and she did a super job as well.  Took time to understand what I wanted, which was just to trim off my split ends (yeah, it had been a while since my last cut) and touch up my layers to frame my face.  Gave me some good advice on which Aveda products would suit me best also - so I'm happy to give van michael a 5!  Hooray!  And did I mention affordable pricing???? Very much so!

Here I was this hair victim of a baffling salon tragedy. And right there as I crossed the street, there was Van Michael, open on a Sunday?!

I met with a friend on South Beach and a couple of hours later we walked by Van Michael and it was still open, I decided this was a sure sign that I must go in and ask them about my hair.

I was greeted as soon as i stepped in and as I recounted my hair horror story I was reassured they could help. Within a few minutes I was sitting in Dino's chair and he was advising me on options.

Yes, yours truly had to go even shorter and a lot of hair was lost but in the end, he performed a miracle.

It wasn't till later that I learned Dino is part of the Van Michael's New Talent Team that work on Sundays. So let me get this straight, a new, fresh, talented stylist, opened on Sunday, and at a special New Talent rate?!?!

See they were right, dreams do come true. =)

There's only one person I let come at my head with a pair of scissors, and that's Jessica at Van Michael. She knows exactly what I like and when I leave, I feel like a brand new person--with fabulous hair. When my locks made an odd and unwanted transition from stick straight to curly (I'm blaming it on prolonged exposure to humidity and hormones) Jessica quickly gave me a tutorial on how to deal with my newly non-straight hair and set me up with the supplies I needed to feel human again. That's what makes her more than just a stylist, she's a friend, a friend with whom you'd entrust your lovely locks.

Jessica is just one of the Van Michael family members I adore. When my brows get bushy, I head right over to Siobhan for a little restoration. And Siobhan gets it right every time. Plus she, as well as the other staffers, as just as cute and courteous as can be.

When it comes to Color, Cynthia is your go-to girl. She taught me about chocolate number 5 and now not only is it my favorite sweet treat, it's also my favorite shade.

If all salons were this great, I don't think any of us would have bad hair days. When it comes to Van Michael, I'm a customer for life.

After a second visit, I realized that V.M.'s "new talent" should be considered "raw talent"!

When it comes to color, Stephanie has gotten it right on the money both times. She's given me a light and natural look for my very dark brown (with some grey) hair.

As for my cut, Dino worked his magic with the scissors. Dino was able to give me a modern-bob with a little bit of an edge to it.

I wanted a drastic make-over when I walked in and I got it. I've received so many compliments from their work--they deserve all the accolades I can give them. I also left just as pleased after my second visit.

I rarely stay with the same colorist or hairstylist for a long time, but these two will be seeing plenty of me and anyone else I can recommend them to!

Hi, my name is Janet and I committed stylist adultery. That said, I enjoyed every moment of it!

Yelper Ginger clued me into the 50 percent off special and well, it was an offer I couldn't resist. I guilty called for my appointment and headed over that afternoon.

The salon is a good size and the staff was incredibly kind and professional. I arrived a little early and had Siobhan restore order to my eyebrows. She was awesome and my eyebrows look human again.

Next was Jessica, who could not have been nicer nor done a better job. I love my new cut. She took her time to learn about my hair and what I wanted. Considering I was at a hair plateau she managed to figure out exactly what I wanted - bless her!

And I must not forget Lolita, the assistant, who was a sweet as can be and gave me the most wonderful scalp massage before washing my hair!

    Absolutely fabulous.

I just moved to Miami last week and had no idea where to go for a very much needed cut + color.  Not that there weren't tons of options, but Van Michael, like myself, hails from Atlanta and I hoped for a little southern comfort at this salon.  Phew!  It was fantastic - very laid back atmosphere and lots of laughing by clients and stylists alike, which made me feel even more comfortable and happy.  My colorist was Summer and when presented with a mess of over-processed blonde on my head, she gave me a few options.  I chose the one that would be a 'work-in-progress' and she cleaned up my roots and took out great heaps of brass from my little mop.  It looked great - more natural, and less "Girls Next Door" as she put it.  She was supersweet and an ATLien, like yours truly.  Loved her.

Dino was my haircuttah.  After watching him go to work on a few women while Summer foiled me out, I felt really good about what was coming out of his chair.  We talked about what I was hoping for and what he thought was possible and then he set to work.  He worked quietly and I was confused by what was happening with the blowdrying but then the pomade came and suddenly I had this fabulous little style that was better than anything I could have dreamed up!  I could not have been happier with the funky & versatile bob he gave me - and so happy I didn't look like a 'mom'.  I literally jumped out of my seat and hugged the guy.  :)   Then he gave me pointers on the mysterious drying techniques and how to achieve this new, supercute look.   And gained himself a new regular.

Yes, I will be back for more.  $107 for cut ($42) and color ($65).  What a freaking deal!

I have been a Van Michael client for five years now. I get full color so I have to go in pretty often for touch-ups. I have always received impeccable service, they always greet you with tea or water and make you feel welcome.

My colorist Taylor is a godsend. She has taken me from beach blonde to chocolate brunette numerous times over the past few years. She listens to my needs and performs miracles.

One word of caution, do not be late! They will cancel your appointment.

Prices are great, salon is modern-chic, staff is friendly, parking is an ease. I recommend this salon hands down above others in the area that I have been to.

I paid a visit to Van Michael this past Friday and had a good experience. Had my haircut done by Dino...and yes it looked nice, but I would have wanted the layers to be more emphasized....it wasn't the best haircut I've had...but it was ok. It seems as though he was on a hurry....so I don't know..maybe I caught him on a bad day.
The person I was truly pleased with was Fabiola...she is the one who did my eyebrows..she was excellent!..she took her time, and the final result was excellent...she even gave me a mini make up session and I left the salon looking radiant. I would definitely go back to her for eyebrows.
Hair cut /blowdry and eyebrows = $75... awesome price!
A plus about the salon is that they are open on Sundays from noon until 7pm.

I love Taylor for color. She's sweet as can be, adorable and does a great job.

OK - so I got a sort of unfortunate cut from Levi - but it's actually growing on me. I still think he has more attitude than is strictly necessary, but he's not a terrible stylist for the price. I'm still not sure if I'll go back to him - mostly because the cut I expected is not the cut I have, even if I don't hate it anymore.

I do hear good things about Jessica and Greer, but they are more $$...probably worth it in the long run.

    REVIEW ON AVEDA ONLY:

It's good to have a place for Aveda products on Lincoln Road. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, testers available for sampling, great hours and salon.

However, I enjoyed more shopping for Aveda products at Avanti on Purdy Avenue in Sunset Harbor than at this location partly because of the ambience and also partly because of the clearer demarcation between the store and the salon/spa.

I was kind of nervous about going to a salon in Miami Beach - thinking very expensive and over-the-top-ness. But, I have to say - Van Michael Miami Salon is a great salon. It's small (not intimidating), intimate, clean and everybody is kind and up-front.
I got New Talent - Dino - who was amazing and instantly put me at ease.
He did exactly what I wanted and did not cut too much off :-)
I highly recommend this salon, it's not too expensive and it's professional.

I love this place!  I was recommended by a friend and I was hoping it wasn't going to be the ultra-SoBe poseur experience where I would feel hopelessly unsophisticated and uncomfortable.  To the contrary, I was made to feel at home immediately I walked in.  Everyone was so nice.  My colorist, Taylor, is THE BEST!  She put me right at ease immediately.  She did my high and lowlights exactly as I wanted and she was so incredibly nice.  My hair looks and feels great.  The condition afterwards was terrific, no breakage at all.

I can't wait to go back.  Taylor rocks!

This salon is clean and gives off a welcoming vibe - they will greet you and offer you a drink as soon as your toe crosses the threshold. Went to Siobhan for eyebrows - almost perfect, even though it was her first time working with me. She is amazingly sweet, as is the rest of the staff. Important: she is sanitary, sterilizing her hands before and during the treatment. She took her time, was skilled and efficient, and honored my requests from our pre-wax consultation. Will be back!

The hairdresser I've loved, and had been seeing for years, moved out of the area earlier this year and many of my co-workers recommended Van Michael Salon, so I decided to try it out. I've now been three times with Dino, who was once considered a "new talent" but has since been promoted (i.e. charges more money). The first time, I asked him to follow the lines from my previous haircut (so I could be reassured that he knew what he was doing) and was very happy with the results. The next two times, feeling a little more confident in his skills and also a little more adventurous, I asked him for something a little more creative and fun... but ended up disappointed :-( I have thick, course hair which can be difficult to manage. It has a tendency to feel very heavy if not layered and texturized properly. It felt like a very "blunt" cut as opposed to a gradual layering effect which falls in the right places and lightens the load. Maybe I'm so used to having a hairdresser who understands exactly what I want without having to describe it.

The salon itself is very modern yet unpretentious. The staff are extremely nice, friendly and professional. I heard that they include scalp massages at the beginning of each haircut, though I have only ever received one, on the third time when I arrived early and Dino was finishing up with another customer. I would recommend this salon to others, though I think I will look for another hairdresser who is more accustomed to working with my kind of hair either here or somewhere else.

thanks to yelp i found out about an awesome bogo deal van michael was having, i called up my fave yelper kelly o and we made our plans for a late saturday haircut.

we arrived right on time to the super nice guy at the reception who immediately offered us some drinks (water coffee or tea). then we met andres, our stylist, who was simply amazing- super friendly and funny and clearly very talented.

i graciously let kelly go first (i was a little scared and wanted to see what he did with her hair before i trusted him with mine, lol)
so he talked a little first and then started working his magic. i was super impressed with kellys new look, a modern day farah fawcett!!

i was definitely more at ease for my turn. he began to cut and style my hair and i absolutely loved my cut. i have gotten so many compliments, my bangs are perfect and the feathered layers throughout are just awesome. and its super easy to maintain and style on my own.

i would definitely recommend andres, and if they ever have that deal again, RUN over there, a top of the line wash/cut/blowdry for $37 in south beach, unheard of!!

I have been a client of the salon for 2 years now.
Have no doubt, here you will find only very professional people.
The front staff are very friendly, greet nicely and offer drinks (tea, coffee, water etc.).
Usually you get hand or scalp massage, which I like a lot.
I am blond and my hair is fine, so highlights always ended up burning my hair. This has never happened again, thanks to Taylor, one of the colorists.
I was never happier with how my hair looks now. She always gives me wonderful advice on how to treat my hair and suggests Aveda products, without being pushy. I ended up buying a lot of them and find this brand exceptionally good.
I tried also 3 different hair stylists: Levy, Dino & Shioban.
Levy is not there anymore, but let me tell you he gave me a fantastic hair cut. After that I cut twice with Dino, but we never really clicked. So I tried Shioban and was really satisfied, because she really listened to what were my concerns, etc. I really needed more than just trimming but she respected the fact that I am trying to let my hair grow and did what she could to make it look nice again, without cutting too much.

Van MIchael is pretty much one of the best (consistent) deals that can be found on Miami Beach. A friend of mine had gone to their Atlanta outpost while in law school, and she turned me (and subsequently all of my other blonde compadres) on to the salon. Their new talents program is fabulous, allowing you to get a cut and blow out starting at $25 with their junior staff. I mean really, I think Supercuts in Des Moines probably charges more than that. Color is great too...my friends and I all go to Taylor. Prices are reasonable and you can opt out of a blow dry with color to save yourself about $30. Staff is friendly and unpretentious. It's an Aveda salon so all of the products are great as well.

I've got eyebrows that can reach Ernie-from-Seasame-Street proportions. They are unruly, grow as quick as Sea Monkeys and I have no clue as to how to shape them myself. I've gone through a slew of aestheticians whom usually rip off 95% of my hair and leave me with way-too-thin brows. With that said, when I come across a GREAT eyebrow waxer, I'd like to share the love. So I reccommend Shioban at Van Michael salon on SoBe. She waxes, plucks and trims eyebrows REALLY well. And the price is just right at $18. Yeah, parking's a bitch, but the perfect brow is worth it.

I visited this place for the first time last month and will not return, Unfortunately I was very unhappy with my cut I specifically requested a cut doable on my hair from a picture and got nothing but not even close. I noticed a day later my hair almost the same except a tad less hair but the style was a no show price in general for a wash cut and dry not so bad for the beach but only if I had gotten what I ask for. Its a pitty to feel this way because my hair has grown out a bit and has no style with the cut I received now will have to go a bit shorter. Staff (front Desk) very friendly and courteous but unfortunately unhappy..

I just got my hair cut here. The service is amazing, the receptionists are extremely accommodating and very nice. They have three levels of stylists: new talents, junior talents and senior talents. I was kind of in a rush to get my hair cut today and since I only made my appointment this morning, just took whatever time and person I could get. Rob, a new talent ($35 starting for a cut), was my stylist. I wanted something like Rihanna or Pink and ended up with something more like Adam Lambert, but it's growing on me. Even though the haircut was not the exact one I wanted, I have to say I had a good experience and it was very decently priced. They massage your head before they wash it, which is a nice touch and Rob was nice and fun. I would definitely consider going back, perhaps I'll try one of the other new talents.

This salon was everything that i was looking for.  I've been to the Aveda teaching salon up in Davie and was not particularly interested in going back for another haircut but this salon was awesome.  There was no waiting, everyone was extremely nice and helpful and Mason did a great job with the whole experience.  She's a new talent but has been there for 15 months.  She did a great job on my hair, talked me through what she was thinking and little things I can do with my hair to spruce it up (i'm not exactly one to spend much time on my hair).  Great experience, great haircut!  I live on the beach, so I will be visiting in the near future.  New Talent is super affordable (lowest price is $35)  check it out

Dino here was fabulous!!  He helped save my hair that hadn't been cut for, eeeeek, 8 months!  I gave him free reign to do whatever he liked and It looks amazing, I highly recommend coming here, especially if everyone is as good as Dino...

I've been frequenting Aveda salons for quite sometime and was excited to find one on the beach. I got my hair cut here by Dino and was let down after reading all the reviews. It was a Saturday and had a similar experience as Sabrina. He seemed in a rush and basically I just ended up with a trim. I was so sad that I didn't get my head rub :( it's always my favorite part of getting my hair cut at Aveda places....so I don't know if he was overbooked or what. He was nice, and everyone at the place was polite. I'm still trying to decide if I want to go back or try somewhere else.

This is a great salon! Everyone is very friendly and down to earth. Its not pretentious, they make you feel right at home. Prices are great too!
I got my hair colored from Taylor and she did a great job, she really understood what i wanted. Shioban cut my hair, shes really sweet and did a pretty good job with my hair cut too.

I would just like to say that I am in love with Dino!! He is absolutely amazing..and this is coming from someone that has had a million haircuts and hated more than half of them.
I was visiting South Beach for work, when I realized I hadn't had my hair cut in almost 4 months. It was definitely time, my ends were feeling pretty frazzled, my layers had grown out, and I was in desperate need of an update. I have been growing out my hair for almost 2 years, so the last thing I wanted was to lose any length. I was really worried about going to just anyone, but after reading the reviews I decided to visit Van Michael.
I made an appointment with Dino and took off an hour from work to get a trim. I wanted to add some edgier bangs and keep the long wavey look I've been attempting to acheive the entire time I've been growing out my hair. Dino was careful not to take off much of the length. I've had slight layers before, but he did something amazing to make my hair a wavey wonderful mess. I walked out paying only $40 bucks (plus tip) and wishing I could stuff Dino in my suitcase for the next time I want my hair to look and feel fabulous.

So I read good reviews here on Yelp and I popped in for a walk-in appointment. It was Monday and most salons, including this one are normally closed so I figured it was worth a shot. I was able to schedule a men's cut with Mason for an hour ahead.

Mason is a "new talent" or "rising star" or whatever Aveda calls it which means a cut is only $25. I normally pay $50. I liked Mason, she was outgoing, interesting, friendly, but more importantly, she gave me a great cut.

She spent about an hour working on my hair and really gave my hair  some excellent layering and texture. She did the whole Aveda essential oil scalp massage which was very nice.

I plan on going back next time I am in town.

I just moved here and needed a stylist that I trusted. I went here strictly based on Yelp reviews and I'm so glad I did. Taylor was great and had my hair's health in her best interests. She gave me some really nice low lights and high lights that turned out beautiful. She also recommended some products to get my hair healthy again. I will definitely be back!

I really love Van Michael Salon.  They have reasonable rates especially considering that it is on Lincoln Road.  The staff is super friendly and always helpful but I keep coming back because of Siobhan.  Siobhan is absolutely amazing at both styling my hair and my eyebrows.  I have never looked as good!
