Vallergas is a Napa fixture. I'm sad they closed their store on Silverado Trail but happy to see the original location still open for business. The food is consistently superior quality. It's Whole Foods and Trader Joe's wrapped in to one - it's the original gourmet market. The produce is superior and fresh. The deli always has quality meats and salad. The service is friendly and quick.
Every time I hear/see someone drool over the new Whole Foods in town, I feel like Glinda the Good Witch from Wizard of Oz: "Ah, but my dear brand-brainwashed Ed Begley-esque drone, you've had a gourmet grocery store option in Napa all along! All you had to do is cross highway 29 and make a left...et voila!"
Vallerga's has been an institution in Napa for decades. I used to frequent the stores on Imola and 1st Street very regularly. Unfortunately, they're not there anymore, and I have to truck up to North Napa for the last location.
The primary reason to go is for the deli. They make sandwiches there that essentially blow away any and all competition (especially since Gina's, on Main & Napa, closed a year or so ago). The butcher is friendly, experienced, well-trained, and extremely helpful. The sushi is great (for prepared grocery sushi, I should say) and the produce is pretty much as good as you can get outside the farmer's market.
So don't fool yourself into thinking that there's only one gourmet grocery option in Napa...there are a couple, but the best is Vallerga's.

One big friggin' wild GOOSE chase, that's basically what it took to find this place!
So, for those who are trying to find Vallerga's and were used to it being near Napa Valley College... Guess what? It isn't there anymore! Even though I say that, I know some poor shmuck and her boyfriend are going to spend two hours bouncing back and forth to the places where they "could have sworn it was". Only to end up parked by the side of the road yelling at each other "Well you said it was going to be over there! Why don't you ask someone where it is???" "What's the matter with you!?" "Finnnnnne, we'll keep driving all over Napa and waste gas to find this damn place!" Like I said, this will happen to someone else, trust me.
At least the wild goose chase was worth it. WELL WORTH IT. If it wasn't for the three letter G-Word, I would definitely make the trek from Benicia waaay more often.
I felt as if I had walked into a produce induced, health charged mecca of delicious food. It's just a beautiful sight and I didn't get that gagging feeling I get when walking into Whole Paycheck.. The prices at Vallerga's are still doable. Emphasis on doable...
So let's talk GF, gluten-free that is. They have all the GF products marked clearly and they have a nice selection too. They also have sugar-free, diary-free and nut-free labeling, in addition to the gluten-free labeling. I definitely wished I could have spent more time wandering the aisles and familiarizing myself with the different products. Unfortunately, I had to make my trek back home, as I had become exhausted from just trying to find the place.
Recap:
Great *NEW* location
Great GF selection
Wonderful produce selection
Amazing layout
Reasonable prices

It's not cheap, but you always get good quality foods and friendly service!
I wish they kept the other stores open, now I have to drive across town when I want something good from the deli. The deli is great, a little overpriced but tourists and locals are used to that in Napa, I guess.
Hope Whole foods doesn't put them out of business!
this is the only store that remains, but it's a good one. they appeared to have absorbed the staff from the 1st street location, which is great 'cause they're supercool and they hand out free samples while you wait for your handcrafted sandos. at the moment they have a large chocolate display at the front of the store which garners double stars immediately. as mentioned in my JV liquors review, this place retains a kind of yesteryear hospitality which perhaps people of a "certain age" may be accustomed to. if they notice that more than 2 or 3 people are waiting in the checkstand line, they will immediately call for backup. it's impressive, and this kind of service can only be rivaled by Woodlands market in kentfield.
Perfect upscale grocery to get your picnic supplies in. Much better than Oakville Grocery.
