Review from Tim C.
San Francisco, CA
Found this group of derm's via my insurance and Yelp.
I personally worked with Dr. Hall. The front desk staff, the nurse and Felicia were all wonderful. I hadn't seen a dermatologist in years and wanted a full-body freckle check-up and to have two eraser-sized moles removed for aesthetic reasons.
Everyone took their time and was really welcoming. The removal was amazingly painless.
Dr. Hall personally called to let me know that the moles were negative regarding labwork. Furthermore, I later thought my wounds had become infected. I left a message after-hours and received a prompt call from the staff the next day. -

Dr. Reese is one of the most knowledgeable dermatologist that I've ever been to. He's open to whatever you want to do, and doesn't pressure you to do anything you want.
He identified a treatment option for my 'adult acne' saying that there's a bacteria infection and put me on a regimen of topical creme and medical supplements. It's been a week and I've seen vast improvements.
Will definitely recommend Dr. Reese. His staff is AWESOME as well, which makes it a better experience! -

I love Dr. Reese. He is the kindest, most helpful doctor I have ever had. He is always out to help you get the most for your money and is never trying to sell you the most expensive product. He is down to earth and sensitive to anything you have to tell him.
My skin is clearing up so I know I won't "need" to see him much, which is I guess the goal; however, I will do my utmost to recommend him to everyone I know who is searching for that perfect dermatologist. Dr. Reese is it! -

Be aware: this practice doesn't accept Blue Cross or Blue Shield. If those are your insurance providers, you won't be able to go here without paying in advance, and risking a declined reimbursement from your plan. Is it worth it to you?
I don't know how it is that a medical practice can avoid taking one of the largest insurance providers, but there you go. I've wasted time calling these folks on two different occasions, only to be rebuffed because of the insurance problems. Never again. -

I've been seeing Dr. Vail Reese for about 5 years now and he'll have to dump me to get rid of me. He has a fantastic bedside manner and is very careful to try and decide what might work best for you rather than pushing the latest industry medications on you. His office is also very tidy and professional, staff included.
He's done everything on my face from treating acne, to helping with hyper-pigmentation as well as removing quite a few suspicious moles. He even calls me himself with the results. -
Review from Cassy R.
I have seen Dr. Hall not Dr. Reese and I love her and I will tell you why in just a short bit...
First, let me tell you about my experience with the front desk. I've only dealt with one person and she's never been rude or looked down upon me. After reading the reviews I could understand how people would perceive her to be that way though. Beyond that, it is not her fault the Dr won't accept patients for any reason. Talk about don't shoot the messenger...geez. That's like blaming a waiter for bad food. She's always helped me get receipts for reimbursement.
Okay...on to Dr. Hall and why she's amazing!!
A. she's always super friendly...very key. Any doctor that will see me in a compromising position better be good at making me feel at ease. Her nurse is also awesome in this regards.
B. she's always giving me samples to try out first and coupons if it's expensive.
C. she's great about taking into account my desire to go more natural. She only recommends oral meds or topicals after suggesting my natural alternatives. YAY!
D. she fully explained the pros/cons of a small bump laproscopy I had and made it easy peasy.
E. She's always treated all my concerns very seriously as well instead of brushing them off like a lot of doctors do.
F. I never feel rushed and I never wait around long to see her. I'm still looking for a good PCP who doesn't do that.
G. I called in to get advice on something and she responded soo quickly.
I only gave 4 stars because she doesn't have email and I really love being able to quickly get medical advice without that stupid co-pay. -

I've been a patient of Dr. Reese now for six years and have nothing but good things to say about him and the practice. He's professional, thorough, and tends to lean towards the cautious/conservative side in his care.
I've been to a few different dermatologists because fair skin and moles run in my family, and I've had quite a few removed/inspected over the years. He's by far the best I've encountered. Most recently he treated a fairly severe allergic skin reaction which has been an issue for the past 9 days. After a steroid injection and the correct prescription, it's now gone after 24 hours. -

Dr Reese was such a kind and helpful doctor. I am most interested in natural medicine and only go to western doctors as a last resort. Dr. Reese was able to recommend a real solution that no other dermatologist has done before in my experience. He has a great sense of humor and a "because you deserve better "approach. In 24 hours, I can see a difference in my skin. Thank you Dr. Reese.

I emailed them to see if they took my insurance. The email is on their website.
They left me a voicemail to say that they needed more information. So I called twice, once was their lunch hour (12-1), so they were closed, next was put on hold for a few minutes since there were three calls ahead of me. I gave them the VERY SAME INFO that I had already given them in my email and was then told that they do not take my insurance.
Good. After retarded customer service like that, I'd probably be better off somewhere else anyway. -

I have previously reviewed Dr. Hall and I'm now reviewing Dr. Reese as well.
I can't imagine giving these two awesome docs anything fewer than 5 stars. Dr. Reese is as great as Dr. Hall. He really cares about me and I only have good things to say:
1)He always answered any questions that I had (and I had a lot). I was never rushed and each visit lasted at least 15 mins I think
2) Sometimes I would call his medical assistant to ask to speak to Dr. Reese on the phone with some follow-up questions. And he always did call me back himself at the end of the day!! I don't think any other doctor would do that (besides Dr. Hall). And my questions are all very trivial but he never dismisses them
3) He always carried a laptop, which contains electronic charts of his patients, with him into the exam room. I was really impressed one time during a visit when he mentioned some side-effects from a medication that I had told him about on the phone earlier. He actually made a note of that on his computer!
4) It's always very easy to make an appoinment with either doctor. I have, on many occasions, scheduled a next-day appointment with him or her. And they're always on time and you never have to sit in the waiting room for an hour as you have to do with other derms.
5) When I ran out of refills for some medication and my pharmacy called to get some more, they were extremely responsive and always faxed the prescription on the same day.
I know the practice doesn't accept Blue Cross. But I am willing to pay out-of-pocket because of how great they are.
A lot of the negative reviews don't have to do with the doctors themselves. I highly recommend them!
Btw, I'm just a poor college student with no money to spend on expensive procedures...so they care about their patients not because of the money but because they really do care. And I don't work for them lol -

Dr. Hall is hands down the best dermatologist in SF.
I've had a few moles removed and she (not the receptionist) actually called me to tell me the results of the tests.
The receptionist is awesome and they always accommodate appointments.
Really professional and all-around nice person. I highly recommend Dr. Hall -

Dr Fardin was amazing and sweet. Yesterday was my first appt and I dread finding a new dermatologist since I have a long history of melanoma in my immediate family. She was quick, checked all my moles and didnt give me to much grief about the WICKED sunburn I came in with from 4th of July weekend. In fact she gave me some samples of an anti oxident serum that has been a lifesaver. She was able to remove something that day and scheduled me to come back next week to have something removed that has been bothering me for a long time....total vanity thing. I high recommend this practice! Great team! Thanks Dr. Fardin!

We go to Dr. Reese. He's awesome and wouldn't think about going to another dermatologist. He can do many procedures in his office which is really convenient. Location is a little hectic but well worth it.

I was skeptical about using Yelp for a doctor, but finding Dr. Reese was a huge win! He communicated with me very clearly and helped me choose appropriate treatment options I've been very pleased with the treatment I received and the outcomes. His practice doesn't take my insurance, which he was very sensitive to and outlined the costs involved with each procedure so I could make an informed financial decision as well. I was so pleased with my treatment that it's worth it for me to accept the extra out of network costs.
Bottom line: fabulous doctor! Highly recommended. Thank you Yelp for helping me find him! -

I used to think Dr. Reese was great and trusted him - until he left a huge cortisone dent in my face. Be careful! He may rush and leave permanent, damage.

I'm not white, I'm see-through.
After my first whitey skin check with Dr. Reese, I will go to him for all those in the future. He has a disarming bedside manner and prompt follow-up. Even though I had a mole removed and some little veins lasered on my nose, he made it seem like it ain't no thang and was so quick, I didn't have time to fret. -

After a rushed appointment with another dermatologist, I made an appointment here to get a more thorough mole check. Thanks to Glamour magazine, I had reason to be concerned that the mole on my foot could turn into hard-to-treat melanoma. Dr. Hall seconded my concerns and removed the mole for me.
Although mole removal on the foot is no picnic, Dr. Hall made it as tolerable as possible. I also appreciated that she took the time to patiently address all of my skin concerns, made recommendations on good skin care products, and also conducted a thorough mole check. The last dermatologist I saw didn't even check my back or my feet, hence the need to make this appointment.
Last but not least, Drs. Hall and Reese have instituted a great policy of discounting procedures for people with out-of-network insurance. I have Blue Cross PPO (paired with an HSA) so I essentially pay sticker price for medical procedures. Thanks to this discount, however, I paid less than half of what I paid for a skin check & mole removal at my in-network provider.
I was so pleased by Dr. Hall's excellent bedside manner and knowledgeable recommendations. Keisha, her assistant, and the woman at the front desk were also very welcoming and helpful. -

Dr. Hall You have changed my daughters life in just a few short weeks. When she came to you she was covered in sores from eczema. My daughter and i have tried everything, i mean everything. She was on special diets, potions and creams that cost me over 200 a month. Today she showed her wrist( which is a big deal for us)which for years was covered in thick skin until now. I am now seeing her smile for the first time and i am just filled with joy. Her skin is smoother, softer, and she can sleep through the night without scratching her skin.As a mother, the hardest thing one can do is watch there baby suffer with this illness.Today i have a little peace in my life and less worries! Thank You and God Bless You!

I have to say that I was pretty disappointed with my appointment here.
While Dr. Hall was nice enough, I just didn't feel like it was a successful visit. I didn't leave feeling like I had real solutions in my hand when it came to my skin concerns. I also felt like my body examination for any suspicious moles and the like (as a redhead you have to be careful) could have been more thorough. Even some advice offered about how to better protect my skin when it comes to the sun, would have been welcomed.
After waiting in a thin paper garment for a good couple of minutes before the appointment, I felt that the actual appointment went by much too quickly.
I've heard great things about Dr. Reese who works in the same office, so I may try him down the road when skin concerns arise again. -

2. An even negative minus star for some Dr. Reese fan who has been harrassing me during a workday ....

So Dr. Reese is the dermatologist who does the http://skinema.com website. He assured me that even when I become famous/infamous, he would never post me up there because I'm his patient. He added that he'd never be able to maintain that site if his practice was in LA because he'd inevitably get celebrity clients. I responded, "What about someone like Sean Penn?" who lives in the East Bay. He responded that he can't comment on current or past clients. I think this is called creating medical practice-mystique.
Anyway, I was just going in for my yearly melanoma avoidance check and to get some small things to help with acne breakouts. Dr. Reese was very friendly and explained how things work for the nerd in me. He even understood my description of "satellite acne" (http://openwetware.org...)! Awesome.
He isn't in-network for Blue Cross or Blue Shield but they will submit your claim so you can get out of network reimbursement.
By the way, gorgeous office. Who knew you could pull off a little craftsman-style in a medical office? -
Review from Pam S.
I hate to break it to all my feet fans out there, but right now one of my feet isn't perfect. It's not like I lost a toe, it's just that not all pedicure places use sanitary practices. Unfortunately, their bad decision lead to something weird on my foot. I'm not going to go into detail.
It finally got to the point that OTC therapies weren't working, so I consulted Yelp and decided on this place (even though the lovely and my fave Jessica T wasn't thrilled).
I called and managed to get an appointment fairly quickly, and for front office staff, she isn't bad. The medical assistant was FANTASTIC, as was Dr. Hall. She took a look at the...thing, made her recommendations, and then answered all my other questions.
The office is clean and welcoming, and I am actually looking forward to having a reason to go back (I still need a mole check).
As some of you know, I know doctors very well, and I wouldn't hesitate to send all my friends here to get THEIR moles/things checked. -

I'm still adjusting to the whole "Pick Your Own Doctor" game after being with Kaiser for so many years. I had gotten so used to visits consisting of long waits, but short visits, which were kept serious and professional at all times. I realized just how much I was missing out when I made a visit to Dr. Reese's office.
Shared with Dr. Hall, his office boasts a cast of characters, akin to those involved in a comedy routine. There's the front desk receptionist (the host), his assistant, Winnie (the warm-up act), and Dr. Reese, himself (the comedian).
Dr. Reese removes a lot of the apprehension that comes along with doctor visits. He doesn't talk down to his patients, and his persona is one that puts you at ease. He can exchange witty banter, yet still maintain a professional composure. A lot of doctors could learn a thing or two from his bedside manner.
Aside from the fact that he's actually human, he's completely knoweldgeable in the field of dermatology, explaining thoroughly any conditions I had concerns about.
During my visit, Dr. Reese performed a quick procedure I wasn't expecting. Worried that it would take up too much of his time, he assured me that it wouldn't, but also gave the impression that he had all the time in the world to attend to me. If that wasn't enough, he made doubly sure all my questions were answered before leaving. Most doctors are scratching at the door to leave as soon as your two minute appointment is up.
It's just too bad he's a specialist, and not a PCP. When you can joke around with your doc and forget you're sitting around in your underwear, that is some great patient rapport.Listed in: F.O.Y. - Found On Yelp

I saw Dr. Hall several months ago, and let's just say that I have no idea how she could get a good ratings in here.
So, my appointment time is at 3:00PM, and there is also another patient whose appointment time is at 3:15PM.. at that time, I was thinking to myself, okay, so she's only going to see me for 15 minutes.. it better be effective!
So, I got called in at 3:10PM, and her assistant asked me a lot of questions, about the product that I used, etc, and she left me in the office alone for another 10 minutes. Honestly, I thought that she must be really busy and all, but I heard that she was talking (no.. socializing) to other man outside (I assumed he's her old-time patient), because he was about to leave far away (yes, they talked really loud that I could hear their conversation from the office)..
So, she finally went in to see me, and looked at my face BRIEFLY, and gave me this one cream, while I specifically told her that I have used that cream for about a year, and it has made my face worse!!
So, I still give that cream a try.. She said that my face would be better in about three months, and asked me to schedule another appointment in three months. And guess what, that three months is the WORST stage of my skin.. no sign of improvement whatsoever.. and it's all thanks to Dr. Hall..
I gave her two stars instead of one because of their generous sample. -

I started having skin issues at 12. Four different dermatologists in 3 states later, I had the same issues. And I'm 25. Isn't acne supposed to be gone by now? Well, thanks to Dr. Reese, it's on it's way out for good. Finally!
One of the best parts is that Dr. Reese treats acne like it's normal. Other Doctors I have seen act like your face is about to fall off unless you apply seriously expensive, painful and nasty medications. I have never been a fan of prescriptions, but Dr. Reese has me on a new drug that is, slowly but surly, saving (my) face. He doesn't promise miracles and he reminds you that clear skin, for life, takes time. My skin is much improved, and it's only getting better. Hurray! -

I've gone to Dr. Reese four or five times now and been impressed by both his friendliness and his medical knowledge. He has a great combination of both and in ways I didn't find with the two other dermatolists I've gone to in the past ten years. I trust his judgement. My skin is in much better shape thanks to his care.
The staff have been both warm and professional as well.
I would recommend him to anyone who needs a dermatologist.
That said, there are two procedural hiccups which have occurred again and again and so I have to consider them more than one-of events. The first has to do with how long it took from the time of my appointment to when I actually saw the doctor. I consistently arrived on time but in every instance I've had to wait many minutes, sometimes half an hour, in the waiting room before being escorted to an examining room. Then, minutes later, a staff person would interview me to find out why I was there. Then there was another wait until I saw the doctor himself.
In other words, allow lots of time and take reading material.
The second hiccup is more disconcerting. Let my start by saying that I think Dr. Reese's prices are fair. They are in line with the other dermatologists that I've gone to. I never know, however, what the cost of a new procedure is going to be until I'm on the table, having to decided then and there if I want it. I don't like making a cost analysis decision while I'm lying there with my skin exposed. I would like to have the information beforehand, even if that means getting it at the start of the session when the Dr. is offering me options.
The end result: I go to Dr. Reese and will continue to go to him.
So, I recommend Dr. Reese but there are these two small "bewares." -

Dr. Reese is pleasant, professional, and establishes immediate rapport the second he walks into the room. He has a great sense of humor and has always been considerate of my dignity.
As a result, he has won the hard-earned title of the only man on this planet allowed to give me a good once-over with a magnifying glass while I wear a giant paper napkin.
Well done, Dr. Reese. -

Edit: 5/27/10:
Wait, let me get this straight: your office was broken into on May 19, records and computers were stolen--putting all of your patients at risk for identity theft and you wait until TODAY (over a week) to tell your patients?!? Do you realize you just set your self up for a potential lawsuit, not to mention, hurt the trust of your loyal patients?

I just had my first appointment with Dr. Reese, and you Yelpers were completely right. Dr. Reese was friendly, informative, open, and made me feel instantly at ease. His hand-picked staff are great as well--Winnie is a complete doll. I have never had such a good experience in an office visit--not only did I get some actual information and medication, he was able to do a couple of procedures right there at my first appointment to get my skin on its way to looking its best. -

I've never been to a dermatologist before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I did, however, know that my previous physician had midiagnosed me-he had given my skin a rushed and very perfunctory glance and announced "you have acne, use this cream". I suppose this would be fine if i had zits of any kind. Instead I had a red rash on my cheeks, so I knew this guy was crazy.
I pored over yelp reviews and checked with myprovider multiple times to find this dermatology office, and then had to wait 2 weeks for an appointment...but so glad I did!!
Dr Hall was sweet and understanding, spent plenty of time poring over my skin, and did an amazing job of diagnosing my ROSACEA and getting me the meds I needed (plus some free samples, wooohooo). Her bedside manner was impeccable and I will absolutely come back! -

It's been quite some time since I've needed Mr. Reese's pieces help; however, let me weigh in on this one...he's awesome, friendly, and professional. Bottom line: winnah winnah winnah. Let me tell you a little story....
About a year ago, I woke up to do my regular beauty routine (sand blaster, chisel, turpentine...ya know? the usual). Well after a little Mirror, Mirror action...i noticed something starting to grow on my face. Wicked Witch style--turns out I had a wart (yep, a motha effin' wart) growing on my motha-effin-face. But have no fear, with a little help from yelp, I found the proverbial light. Dr. Reese stepped in and after a couple of appointments and voila no more wart. Ensuring once again, that I'm the prettiest princess in the land.

When a doctor is looking over every inch of your body with a magnifying glass - two words:
BEDSIDE MANNER
I've been going to Dr. Reese for years for the little things that worry me (as a fair skinned Irish, wanna be Jamaican) as well as for those issues of vanity (anti aging, anti wrinkle, yadda yadda). Dr. Reese politely and professionally addresses both.
He was referred to me by a friend and I've referred 4-5 folks to his office. He's responsive (calls you back), his office is run smoothly and efficiently (no tortuously long waits) and listens to what I'm concerned about.
My only criticism? Not a big fan of the bolero paper jackets though I'm not sure how you get around that. -

I have been going to Dr Reese for about 10 years now, probably around the time he started http://skinema.com. He is the only place where you could be half naked with a knife diving in to you, a mole being extracted, and at the very same time have a conversation about Mark Whalberg's third nipple. I love gossiping with him about both celebrities and people we both see on vacations, burnt like lobsters on beaches.
The man is a walking encyclopedia of stars and skin problems. I bet he kicks butt in trivial pursuit...about as much butt he has kicked on my moles.
I have recommended everyone I know to go to him, and I am glad to do that on Yelp, as well. Thanks, Vail!!!! -

I can't say enough about this place. I've gone to both Dr Hall and Dr Reese (depending on their availability), and they are both fantastic. I highly recommend this team!!!

I will join the ranks in praising Dr. Reese to the skies. I have only been in for checkups about 5 times, but I just had 2 nasty moles removed yesterday, that he thankfully thought were not the bad kind.
I agree with what everyone else says about him; he is wonderfully sociable and chatty and that makes all the difference when seeing someone who is about to jam you with a needle. He makes the whole ordeal smooth as silk. And, I might add, his surgical assistant Winnie is a riot - she's so happy go lucky she fills the room with sunshine! -

After reading a couple of Dr Reese's reviews on Yelp, I felt that familar tug of peer pressure, but on calling discovered he was out on vacation. I took what I could get. A next day appointment with Dr Hall. Gulp!
Dermatologists need to keep the ABC's in mind when it comes to treating their patients:
A - Always explain your thoughts and attitudes, especially when non-popular, towards topical subjects of steriods, and hydraquanine etc. Check.
B - Bear in mind how the draft feels from under a paper gown while waiting endlessly for your Dr to arrive. Check.
C - Contact, that is eye cotact, cannot be underestimated when your in the business of having to meet your patients naked first time. Check.
Dr Hall looks like she lives next door. I mean, I swear I saw her dancing her way through that aging yuppie crowd at the Balboa last weekend. No really, she's lovely. She did a full body peek, gave me some samples, which I always appreciate before having to cough up for an unknown cure, and promised to meet with me in 3 months to talk through some upcoming changes. I was in and out in half an hour, without feeling rushed. I liked the clean, efficient and thorough way they do business. -

Holey-Moley! So yeah I have a lot of moles. I have moles on my scalp, my back, my arms, I even have one on my ear! My ex even called me chocolate chip! Needless to say I'm more than a little freaked out by the thought of getting skin cancer (not to mention the fact my grandpa had it and I got sunburned a ton as a kid!)
Dr. Reese took a look at all of them and gave me a clean bill of health! But he didn't just do that he also had awesome bedside manner, dispelled a lot of myths for me, gave me ideas about what to look for in my moles. And told me I should come in once a year to get them checked.
The office was clean and modern, the front desk staff were nice, and my doctor seemed to actually care about me. I couldn't really ask for more so I know where I will be getting my next yearly mole check up. -

How could I forget to write a review about my favorite doctor? Dr. Reese is the BEST dermatologist I have ever seen. (and I've seen dozens) He's the only one who has managed to give me clear skin, get rid of my nasty scars, erased my fine lines, helped with weird ailments that tend to crop up with my health issues, and always gives me more then enough information to get better. On top of all that, he does it with a huge smile.
I've been seeing him for 4 years now. He goes above and beyond, and really my skin has never looked as good as it does now. I can't say enough about him! -

Just a touch of aquaphor and I'm mucho better.
I went to another dermatologist years ago and it was such a bad experience I never wanted to see another derm for the rest of my life. HOWEVER, skin abnormalities are no joke. I had to get a second opinion to WebMD.
Thanks again Dr. Reese! -

Since Dr. Matarasso (and the rest of the practice) is no longer taking United HealthCare insurance, it was time to branch out. Union Square Dermatology was able to get me an appointment with Dr. Hall 6 days after I called, and even at the end of the day.
I hadn't done the mole check in years, so it was time. Dr. Hall made me feel like a skin care rock star for knowing the ABC's of moles, and she shot one on my back with some liquid nitrogen so it's not nasty anymore. I was in and out in 20 minutes. No complaints here.Listed in: Feel Better!
