Excellent choice when traveling to San Diego on a budget. We were originally looking at the Courtyard Marriot next door. When we found out the prices we were unable to stay there. On a hunch we decided to check this place. Less than half the price of next door. We got a weekday rate of $60 per night. We have been extremely pleased with our stay.

    -Free WiFi
    -Free waffle breakfast
Included complimentary cereals, oatmeal, orange juice, milk, apples, oranges,
tea, hot chocolate, boiled eggs and possibly a couple of other things I may be
         forgetting.

    -Clean rooms
    -mini fridge
    -microwave
-basics a hotel room should always come with. (coffee maker, alarm clock)

    -friendly staff

We would definitely stay here again if we ever come back to San Diego!

    2/2/2011 2 Check-ins Here

My girlfriend and I were going to go to Sea World for the weekend so I searched for some hotels nearby. This place seem to have decent reviews so I thought I would give it a try.

Check-in was quick and painless and got to my room within 5 minutes of pulling up. I was pleasantly surprised with the two queen bed room. There was a fridge, microwave, a nice desk with an office chair, TV, free decently fast internet, marble counters, etc. I was very happy with the room and it was under $60 for one night with a AAA membership. It's fairly close to the beach and downtown, and of course Sea World. There's also a convenience store right next door; no need to look for a grocery store to pick up some booze.

The free breakfast in the morning was great. They had the usual cereal, boiled eggs, coffee, etc. But what I loved was the whole make your own waffle station. They had about 4 waffle makers out so you don't have to wait around a long time for anyone else to make their waffles.

Checking out was just as easy as checking in. Next time I stay in San Diego I would definitely consider staying here again.

Great hotel for the price. Staff were friendly. Room was clean and spacious - seemed like it had recently been remodeled since it had nice marble detailing on the furniture. The room comes with a fridge & microwave too. Free WiFi came in handy for figuring out where to go.

There are 2 pool areas, I went to one. We brought back our Phil's BBQ and had a picnic by the pool, pretty awesome!

The hotel is in a good location, central to a lot of places if you're driving. We were even able to catch the bus to the Gaslamp district to go out, then got a taxi for the ride back.

Also, like people mentioned, the breakfast included delicious waffles!

Anddd they allow pets...I didn't bring mine so I'm not sure what the charge is.

I definitely plan on coming back to this hotel.

My family and I stayed here this weekend after a trip to SeaWorld. I choose this hotel based both the yelp reviews and pricing. As other reviewers said, it's not a luxury hotel but you can't beat the location and price.

When we arrived they offered us a free upgrade to the kids suite with bunk beds and snacks since they thought our kids would enjoy it. He also mentioned that the room was right next to the pool which was also a plus. The room was clean and it offered a refrigerator and microwave along with a queen bed and bunk beds, full down below and twin on top. The beds were a bit firm but we all slept just fine. They also offer free breakfast in the morning, coffee, juice, muffins, hard boiled eggs, and do-it-yourself waffles, which was nice. There is also a mini-mart right next to the hotel if you want to make a quick run.

Also, the staff was very friendly and professional which to me is just as important as the room itself.  Our experience at the Vagabond was good and I would definitely stay here again.

Overall, a decent hotel for the price.  It's definitely one step up from a Super 8 - which was all we were looking for.  Free Parking.  Free Wireless. Clean rooms.  Friendly staff.  The location is easily accessible to many attractions (San Diego in general seems pretty easy to get around).
It was the cheapest rate we could find, and we left pretty happy.

    Other points:

The room has a fridge and a microwave.

They upgraded us to a room with 2 beds just for asking.

The continental breakfast is nice - good waffles and decent orange juice.  I don't expect much more.

I did not see any homeless people in the area, so I'm not sure what the other yelpers are commenting on...

For a fair price, I would definitely return.

Good value, I liked that they offer waffles as part of the continental breakfast.

Clean rooms, friendly staff.  My only issue was the room didn't have a hair-dryer which was inconvenient and odd as that's normally standard. Room was a bit oddly shaped which results in the TV being at the side of the room as opposed to across from the beds.  A small detail, but is slightly annoying.   Located right next to a small convenience store which was, well, convenient.

What an inexpensive hotel, and what a great bargain!  The room was clean, neat, and large for 50 bucks...Wi Fi was included as well as a continental breakfast.   The bathroom isn't the nicest, but it was clean.   I definitely recommend if you're in the San Diego area, and need a cheap and clean place to stay.

Overall this place is OK. It's typical of the older hotels/motels in the area. The rooms were a bit older, but clean and big enough to satisfy traveling needs. The pool was a bit small and the interior of the rooms was a older and in need of updating. I would stay here again in a pinch, like this last time, but not sure I would choose to stay here. Nothing major to report, or complain about, but it was 2stars for a reason and price reflected that fact. Tough location if not familiar with the area, but central to everything in SD.

We decided to try this hotel instead of our usual in the area on our last visit. We were willing to pay a little more for better beds, and the complimentary breakfast with the actual hot waffles caught our attention. Driveways are a little tricky because they only go one way so you have to double check before you pull in the wrong one. The hotel itself needed an upgrade, screamed 70's to me, but check-in was easy, and finding the room was easy. We walked up the stairs and I'm guessing one of the maids lives there because the first window at the top of the stairs has a bunch of stuff sitting on the inside, not the nicest thing to look at, but whatever. We got to our room and did the standard walk-through. We were pleasantly surprised with a makeshift kitchen next to the sink in the back of the room. Microwave on top of the little fridge, good coffee maker with a few different sample coffee packets tucked in it, we thought it was great. The actual bathroom wasn't the prettiest thing, but it was a toilet and a shower/tub so it worked. Lighting in there sucked though. The bed wasn't amazing, but it was comfortable. I have a very sensitive back and it didn't bother me the next morning, so that in itself is why we'll return.

You are able to hear the freeway at night, but I live next to one so the noise didn't bother me and it wasn't very loud. If it wasn't so expensive, we'd like to try their "suite" with the Jacuzzi tub next time. But it's a pretty penny. As I've said, we will be staying here next time we're in the area, and I'd suggest you to do the same.

I come down every quarter to attend the UCSD vendor fair and have stayed at vagabond for the past 2 years.

I have continued staying at vagabond because I liked the service and the rooms were decent, I stayed throughout all the price increases and even referred friends who attend the vendor fair with me to stay here as well. Unfortunately vagabond has not been so good to me, though I have remained loyal to them.

This last stay was the end for me.

We arrive and check in and not 5 minutes after we close our door, we get a knock at the door. My husband opens it up and an old lady is standing there, going on about how shes next door and her son got arrested for doing somersaults. What??  My husband says we just checked in so we wouldn't know anything about what happened and she then asks us for our names for evidence.

I called the front desk since I was a little concerned and told Danae, who was there at the time, what happened. I asked her to verify if someone did get arrested for doing somersaults. She was like "there was an incident earlier but I cant say anything more than that" um, okay I am fine with that I don't want to know the details. But she was a snob about it, like, I just want assurance that the neighbor next door to me isn't crazy and won't come back knocking on my door with a gun. (you never know these days) next thing I know, Danae is outside yelling at the old lady that she cant disturb guests. I thought that was distasteful. They went on for about 5 minutes, the old lady screaming at danae and Danae screaming back. After that I felt a little bad for the old lady and thought it was very unprofessional of the vagabond staff to yell at a guest.

Whatever. Other things: my refrigerator made an awful ringing noise  the whole time. They didn't refill my soap, which irritated me a little because I thought that was just something they do. They give you new soap. Not expect you to use the little crappy piece of worn down soap that's broken in 2 pieces at this point.

Oh, I also noticed that they have this free rewards program where if you stay for 9 nights, you get the 10th free. Okay, how have i never been told about this? I've stayed for probably a total of 30 nights. I saw it when I checked in and as i was checking out, the clerk asked the other guest If he wanted to sign up for the program. Obviously ive never been asked the past dozen times I've stayed.

The last kicker for me was when I checked out. David helped me and just gave me the total charge statement, even though the guest before me got a whole breakdown of her cost given to her. I got in my car and drove off and did some calculations on my total. It was $40 over what I thought it should be so I just called back to verify what the tax was. David answered and put me on hold for a couple minutes. He came back and told me it was 12% and so I asked him if I could get a breakdown of what my charges were.. It's my own fault, I should have just verified when I was there. He proceeds to tell me I can come back in and get a print out. Why didn't you give this to me in the first place? I told him I was already on the road and he goes, "well there are customers here I need to help." so because I have already left, that gives him valid reason to treat me like crap and not help me out? I mean, seriously how long would it have taken to just look up my account and tell me the breakdown?? I'm gonna say 30 seconds. I wouldnt have taken him more than a minute to have helped me out.

I'm done. And vagabond, you owe me 3 free nights.

Not quite a crackhouse motel but not much better. This is an old motel, if you could get it for about $40 it would be ok, we paid a bit more,
They do have a microwave in the room, and those waffle makers in the front are pretty good, but it gets jammed in the morning with all the beeping and spilling pancake batter and orange juice.
Seemed safe, but we heard  homeless lived in the brush up the hill, gave us the creeps.
Doubt we'll stay here again, sort of a Bates Motel place at night.

When looking around for rooms, a microwave and mini fridge was of importance for us. After looking at everything available which included those,  we decided on giving this hotel a try. Driveways were a bit tricky but no biggie....parking was not over crowded even getting in later in the evening. Checking in was easy. We did a walk through of our room to check things out. Considering it was mainly for sleeping ever thing seemed OK for the most part. Bathroom was kinda ehh. Although the sink water smelled something horrible, somewhat like a sewer...and kept thinking how we had to wash up in that!! The shower sucked!! It was clogged and took 10 mins to drain. Breakfast was ok since they had the waffles...i was expecting it to be in a different area other then the office but it was still decent. Could hear traffic but wasn't an issue for us. Overall experience wasn't horrible but could of been better even if it was for sleeping. I'd definitely shell out more money for a nicer room with a better bathroom and shower. My husband said we won't be staying here again!

I will never stay here again! This place may be ok if you are just passing through with your pet. We took our dog on vacation so we were limited on the hotel options and picked this motel because it was the highest rated, pet friendly motel.
First we pulled in to check in and there were homeless people walking all up and down the street in front of the motel. We get the key and pull around the place to park and there is a torn down building 30 ft directly behind the motel. And this is considered the pet area? There was rusty building materials everywhere. I had to take my dog behind the hotel next door.
So then we open the door to the room and it smells bad- like old urine and cigarette smoke. I had housekeeping change out the bedding and it helped a little. The illegal housekeeping staff didn't speak English but they were trying to be as helpful as they could be.
Over our 4 night stay, we discovered the toilet leaked BAD, the microwave was unusable bc the plate was shattered inside, the fridge was stuck on high and froze all our drinks overnight, the bed was broken and had to sleep in the middle or you would fall off the edges, VERY limited breakfast options (waffles or cereal) and everyone wanted waffles.
I will never go back! This place was disgusting!
