I must admit, Vacation Village must have been awesome back in the day. It's right on the beach, it's on the Laguna Beach strip, great restaurants nearby, a pool for every building...
But now? Yes, it has the location. It will always have that. But everything else has gone to hell. The rooms are dilapidated. Leaky ceilings, a hardly flushable toilet, scummy carpet, and outdated furniture. Smelly elevators, expensive parking, and a pushy man with a clipboard to get you out of the room exactly at checkout time.
Had I not gotten a great deal through TravelZoo's Top 20, I would have been very disappointed.
If you're going to stay here:
1.) Refuse to pay more than $100/night.
2.) Only get the ocean view balcony rooms.
3.) Stay on the beach and out of your room as much as possible.

I loved this place. We stayed in the "Reef" building, where all the rooms have a patio overlooking the water. The building is an odd layout (you cross a parking lot to get from the main building to our room), but it wasn't an inconvenience. The pool leaves something to be desired, but who cares? The ocean is steps away! The staff were very friendly and even let us check out very late. I'd recommend this to anyone.

What a great value. Where else can you get a room ON THE BEACH for $250 per night? Other hotels we scoped in the area, like the Surf and Sand, priced at at about $450 per night. Granted the actual space was more motelie than hotelie, the interior was still comfortable (thought small) and modern. The best was that there was a stairway from our floor that lead directly down to the beach, and of course a spacious balcony overlooking the water. My only regret is that we didn't have more time to stay and enjoy Laguna.
