I'm a fan of their pizza (white or arugula & goat cheese), but I always feel like an asshole going here. I've had the same waitress the half dozen or so times I've been, and if this poor dear is stuck in the family business, she's clearly tried and failed to get out of the family.
But it's still the old school neighborhood joint - lots of kids, lots of families, noisy in that suburban way you don't get very often. Italian-American food just like you expect it, comfortable, plentiful, and begging for the shaker cheese and red pepper. If that makes you shudder, then just keep walking.
Also, while it's got that lights-low Italian charm, it's just about the least romantic restaurant in the area. Whenever I see a date in there, my date and I chuckle to ourselves.
Nice, no frills pizza and pasta. The pizza is good--loaded with cheese and toppings, nice crust, and the pasta is middling. Kind of Italian-American comfort food style. This is not gourmet food, and if you come here expecting gourmet food you will be disappointed. But it is a great neighborhood option for when you want pizza that is better than the other greasy delivery chains.
Basic Italian food, atmosphere, service. Good if you want to get together, chat and spend time without either being rushed or over spending. Don't expect upscale service, food, or ambiance and you'll have a good meal with family or friends.
I moved to San Diego about two years ago, and I spend most of my time sighing and daydreaming about this pizza. It's truly the best pizza I've ever had in my life. It's conveniently located right near Columbia and it's always packed because it's that good. I can't even say anymore about it, go eat there!
Stopped by after class one night & ordered a pizza. Great pizza. (5 stars!) However, I had to wait 20 minutes for my pizza. (Boo that...4 stars!) Next time I'll get it delivered or call ahead.
I like the pizza. It was good. It filled up my tummy. Mmm... pizza.
Bleh!
You call that pizza?
You should be ashamed of yourself. It looks good but looks are deceiving.
Pros: Sometimes delivers the kind of greasy pizza my friends and I love.
Cons: Often delivers burned or lukewarm pizza. Has no other edible food aside from pizza. Slow service and snotty staff.
We order from here periodically and hope for the best. If they weren't one of the best places to get the must-fold kind of pizza I like, I wouldn't have anything nice to say about them. The times I've had pasta here it was cold noodles in runny, almost tasteless sauce. From what I hear, they've been going downhill over time. But if you like deliciously greasy pizza, definitely give it a shot.
I came here once a year ago and had a basic pasta dish with marinara. I thought it was terrible. The sauce tasted like it was out of a can. 1 star.
I ordered pizza from here tonight and it was pretty damn good! 4 stars.
This is a great fallback place and on Tuesdays they have 10% off... the service kinda stinks but they make up for it with big portions and good prices
Two words: imitation scallops.
I never even knew such things existed and a reasonable diner would not imagine that he would be relegated to eating imitation scallops parmigiana for $16 -- not even in Manhattan!
Nevertheless, there are some gems on the menu. The pizza is reliably good. The complimentary bread is quite tasty - crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. I also like the broiled lamb chops (simple and lightly seasoned and served with the part that most restaurants don't serve), the tiramisu, the chicken soup, and minestrone soup.
On the other hand, the pasta and side dishes are average. The hardness of the steamed peas reminded me of stale Japanese-style fried peas.
Overall: 2.5
Why they heck is it so hard to find a pizza place (that isn't Papa John's or Domino's) to deliver to this area? And I thought only 911 was a joke in my town. Anywho I was jonesing for a big pizza pie and was having a hard time finding a place. After was seemed like forever but was probably 20 minutes I found V&T. I was at my moms house and she's on one of these "eating healthier" binges (lets see how long THIS one last), so I wanted to order a spinach pizza for her sake. The pizza is huge, even for a large but who complains about a pizza being too big? Really good flavor, great cheese to sauce ratio, and a crust that's not too thin, but definitely not thick...perfection. I suspect that the spinach was anything but fresh so minus a star for that. I would say the pizza here is a lot better than Tito's and I will definitely be ordering again.
I gotta say, this was the best pizza I had in New York. Cheap, delicious, and hospitable service.
Eh. Decent pizza with a somewhat bready crust that didn't really do it for me. The fries were ok - big steak fry style. The eggplant parm sandwich was blah - too much mush, no toast to the roll, very thick mushy slices of eggplant, decent but not amazing sauce.
All this adds up to me, still on the lookout for great pizza delivery in the area!
Like many of us, I tend to yelp about restaurants soon after I visit them. But then, there are times when I seem to recollect something from a decade ago, that overshadows everything that is recent and relatively fresh in the mind's eye. Going to V & T at once brings back memories of my study group at Columbia, and how we would gorge on the massive slices of Koronet by the Kinko's on Broadway or, if we had the luxury of a few hours, would trek down a few blocks to V & T.
Go to V & T if you like:
1) A Southern Italian mix of ruggedness and charm
2) To revive memories of years gone by
3) Red sauce--this pizza is all about the sauce!
4) Hanging out with friends in an almost bucolic setting
5) Trying something outside the ordinary
Five stars for the incredibly cool memories. Now, if only I could turn back time ...
Just OK. Not spectacular.
We ordered a medium pizza with prosciutto, eggplant, and basil. Our server didn't hear eggplant, so we ended up with only prosciutto and basil (cheese/sauce of course). The prosciutto was sliced very thickly and was way too salty, completely dominating the flavor of the entire pizza. It just tasted like salty honey-roasted ham on pizza!
I could come back here for a different kind of pizza perhaps; this could have been a fluke. I've come here for a few years though, and it's always hit or miss.
It's counter-intuitive to give a place two stars when you go all the time. V&T is the ultimate fall-back. You want to go somewhere cool or interesting but at the last second it becomes too far away, or you're a coward, so...fuck it you go to V&T. The service is pretty poor and the food is decent but probably not worth the moderately inexpensive price. They do have a big menu and pretty good pizza. And this one waitress who's pretty hot but is almost definitely married, and definitely bitter.
Of it's genre, i.e., normal pizza oven New York pizza (i.e., gas, not coal or wood burning oven), this place is pretty much unparalleled. I used to go there when I was a teenager and it's mostly unchanged. The waiters look like they've been there forever (and they probably have), and the decor of the restaurant is the same except for a slight face-lift it had after a fire.
They have Italian specialties at V & T, as it's a typical red sauce southern Italian restaurant in most ways, but the feature here is the pizza, and not just the pizza, but the sauce they use on it. In fact, within a certain circle of friends that frequents this restaurant with me, we don't go for pizza at V & T, we go for "sauce". Our typical order is a mushroom or mushroom and onion pizza, but always with extra sauce. It's not the prettiest meal on earth to eat (the extra sauce can make it a bit messy), but it is definitely one of the tastiest. Oh, and I should mention the crust, which is perfect.
Extra sauce orders seem to be the norm there, so I don't believe we invented it, but it is strongly suggested you order your pizza with it. Oh, and do not order your extra sauce on the side. The sauce they bring for that is not the pizza sauce. It's marinara, which tastes completely different (they claim it's because the pizza sauce is kept cold, and the marinara is hot and they don't want to serve cold sauce at the table).
Columbia students will attest to the spiritual nature of this pizza, and since this place is fairly far uptown (at least for us "narry above 14th St" types), it's pretty much of a sleeper, but trust me, it is worth the trip up to Amsterdam between 110th and 111th. On foot. From lower Manhattan. With a broken leg. And a 30-pound weight attached to the other leg.
After you have what might be some of the best pizza in NY and quite possibly the world, right next door is a Hungarian pastry shop that has all sorts of tasty cookies for dessert.
If you love NY pizza, this place is not to be missed. Some things never change, and I'm glad V & T pizza is one of them.
Do not order the pasta here, unless you like it mushy.
I can't think of too many things I like mushy.
Okay, ice cream. Sometimes. When you take your spoon and swirl around 50 times so you get soup. But that's it!
Had always heard a lot about this place but had stuck with Sal & Carmine's and the occasional Koronet slice when in the 'hood.
This place doesn't live up to the hype. It's a good pie (they don't sell slices) but not great. The tomato sauce is the best part but it's a little on the sweet side (kind of like cheating). Cheese is standard stuff. The crust is the most surprising part. It's very rubbery. No crunch to it at all. I like when you can fold a pizza and the bottom breaks up (but doesn't fall apart). This crust was very chewy - like what you'd expect from a 24-hour deli pizza slice
They've got other food here - it is a restaurant first and foremost - but haven't tried the other food.
It's still better than a lot of slices I've had in the city but I can't see why you'd choose this pizza over Sal & Carmine's or Koronet.
I think this place hs been here longer than Columbia U. I know people who went to CU in the 60's and it was an old place then!
Every time I've eaten there, I've had to wait so long for my food to arrive, that I usually contemplate gnawing on the table to stave off hunger pains. It doesn't matter it the dining room is empty or full, the food takes a year to arrive.
Oddly enough when I order delivery, I get my dinner in 30 minutes or less! The food is piping hot and delicious. The pizzas are wonderful and I'm partial to their Egglant Parm and the Eggplant Rollatini. You could split their calzones between two people and there would still be leftovers.
If you like their food as much as I do, I strongly suggest delivery instead of dining in; only because your food will show up faster.
I have a pizza rule. When I take a slice, I want to be able to hold the crust and not have the tip fall down and let all the cheese run off. I want a crust that can hold its own. This pizza doesn't just break the rule, it stomps all over it. The crust is very doughy and still a bit yeasty. If you like that bit of a burnt flavor on your crust, this ain't your pizza.
On the positive side, they seem to accommodate large groups pretty easily, so if you have 10 people looking for a place to eat, this will work.
V & T has been around for as long as I can remeber. It used to be my favorite pizza but they recently changed their recipe and it has droped a star for me. It is pretty good but you deffently can find better.
The rest of the food is pretty uneatable so don't even try.

THE BEST PIZZA, GUARANTEED... if you are a fool for the original italian style pizza, this is the place to be... make sure you order a plate fried calamari too (appetizer menu)... yum yum!
I have to note that their service is really bad... the original european style! still, it does not outweigh the taste of their food!
I strongly recommend it!
Go here and get some really good pizza at a decent price. Service was good and the place was clean, with aspiring upper class tendencies but pretty laid back when we were in.
The crust was perfect, and so were the toppings, but I forgot to ask for extra sauce. I'll be back to ask for it another day.
Yes, it was an old place in the 60s.
Don't torture yourself. I know its tempting because it is in the neighborhood and there aren't that many pizza places near by. Just make the effort and go downtown for some good italian. The food is just not acceptable!
I've been in maybe 5-6 times in 15 years that I've lived in the general area.
Yes, I know it's a neighborhood institution, and it's not that there's anything particularly wrong with the food. But when I want a sit down dinner, I'm usually not thinking about pizza.
And maybe it's just the waiters. The service is never particularly enthusiastic, and the last time I was there (early 2007), it took 10 minutes to get the waiter to cough up our bill so that we could leave. it wasn't that he was too busy serving other customers (the place was only half full) but was just talking to another waiter at the back of the restaurant to pay attention to his customers.
I stumbled upon this place when I lived in Morningside Heights and was pleasantly surprised by their pizza. It's pretty damn good.
One of the few places you can get scungilli besides Carmines near the seaport. The pizza disappoints.
V&T is your typical plaid tablecloth, red sauce Italian place. It's frequented mostly by Columbia and Barnard students enjoying thin pizza loaded with heavy traditional toppings. This is a loud and fun place to meet with friends. In my opinion, the slices are decent, although I tend to agree with another poster that I do prefer a more stable crust. Plan on using a knife and fork. Other dishes include Italian basics such as Chicken Parm, Marsala, spaghetti and meatballs; you get the picture. Overall, not great, but not too shabby either.
Another Columbia student staple for Italian food. The pizzas here need 10 minutes to congeal before you can pick up a slice, but I've always found them to be tasty (possibly because of the distinctive tomato sauce.) The other dishes are standard basic American Italian fare.
This place reminds me of a quintessential small town pizza place that I'm not used to seeing in the city. We ordered the small size pizza, which was labeled as 14 inches, but I swear it's bigger than that. We also ordered a large helping of fried calamari for appetizer. Nothing's terribly fancy, but this seems to be the place to go for some simple, greasy food.
You can't beat it for Morningside Heights. It's good pizza for a good price in a great location. The restaurant is nice and great for groups - especially for showing around out-of-town relatives. I've been told I have to try the calzones there, as I have yet to have an actual good calzone in New York City, but I haven't gotten around to it. Maybe next year.
In the past 2 weeks I have heard 3 people say, "go to V&T pizza, it's the best in the city." Last night I ordered delivery to check it out. MISTAKE! First off, let's save phrases like "best pizza in the city" for places like Gramaldi's, Lombardi's, or Patsy's... ok? Second, there was nothing I liked about this pizza. I get that this is not coal or brick oven pizza, but not one thing on this whole pie was good. The doe/crust was bland, the pepperoni was garbage, the sauce... oh wait, there was barely any sauce on there to taste, unless you count pools of grease as sauce. The only reason this place has 2 stars is that the delivery guy was pretty fast and the pizza was still hot when it came. Other than that, I'll stick with the downtown pizzerias.
