I am definitely not one for visiting big ships and military stuff, but this was really, really cool.  After paying admission you can get on the carrier and walk your way through a selection of self-guided tours.  As others have noted, do wear comfortable, flat shoes (I tend to prefer heels but fortunately did not wear them the day we went!), because there are a lot of ladders and a lot of walking around.  Also, if you have issues with ladders/narrow stairs, beware.  If you're going up something, you're going to have to go down eventually.  There was one point where I got freaked out because I've had lifelong issues with anxiety over narrow or fire escape style stairs...  However, I persevered and was able to enjoy my afternoon on this ship.  If I can do it, anyone can!
We spent several hours there and went through only two of the tours.  There's a lot to see and lots of great explanatory areas.  Plus, on the top of the ship there are plenty of aircrafts to check out (from the outside, that is).  it was a pretty cool experience and one of the more memorable parts of our trip.

FYI: For extra admission you can also do a boat ride to Fort Sumter.  We didn't do it, but it would have been awesome to be out on the water by that beautiful bridge!

We managed to visit on a record setting day for rain.  Oh, yay.  And just an FYI, while a rain poncho does help a bit, it doesn't prevent you from getting wet.  But my bf had his heart set on going here.  Something about his father did a stint on an aircraft carrier, much like this.  So, how could I say no?  Wait!  I did say no.  But I still got dragged here anyway.

It was worth the trip!  We started out by doing the flight simulator.  It was well worth the $5 extra, although I'm sure a real flight would carry a lot more G's and I would probably scream even louder.  All the displays were very interesting and it was actually fun climbing up all the stairways and tromping all over the carrier.  Even with all the precip, the floor surfaces are not slippery.  Thank God.  It's really amazing to learn about the history of this old gal.  Plus, it was very interesting to tour the quarters to see what life was like on this big ship.  Well worth your time.  Rain or shine!

While vacationing in Charleston, SC you must visit the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier the world's most imposing military marvel during WWII.

"The Fighting Lady" is filled with incredible weapons and war planes. Yorktown fought Japanese forces at Iwo Jima and became target of desperate Kamikaze missions. In 1968 it recovered the Apollo space ship crew.

Admission Fee: adults $15, seniors and military $13, children (6 to 11) $8, and under 6 is FREE.

Tips to know before you go:
1.  The ticket let's you visit the Clamagore submarine, the Laffey destroyer, the Coast Guard cutter INGHAM and the Congressional Medal of Honor Museum.

2. You can easily spend hours on the carrier itself. Start your tour at the Clamagore submarine then continue on to the Honor Museum, then take your time with the carrier.

3. At times it's difficult getting up and down the stairs and in and out of the tiny rooms (most rooms are not handicap accessible).

The USS Yorktown carrier is located at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant. It's open daily from 9 AM to 6:30 PM.

I've got some cool photos and more details on my blog, check it out:

O my God, this place is a giant.  It took my husband and I two trips to this maritime museum and if we ever go back (and we probably will) there will still be places and things to explore.

These ships are not handicapp friendly.

Plan to spend hours walking around, please wear comfortable shoes.
You will have to climb many ladders!

The ship store is crowded with gifts to take home.  Be sure to ask about the MyHobby CD- it offers a photo tour of the ship with descriptional information so you have a better understanding what your looking at!  This program is great because you get over a hundred photos and it is useful for your own pictures and plus it has an address book and a lable maker.

Cheers!

Wow, there is a lot to see here!  Elena is right, you can spend hours on the carrier alone.  We actually only went on the carrier and the submarine over a period of several hours and we didn't even see everything on the carrier.  It was just so insanely hot we couldn't take it anymore and decided to go to the hotel pool.  I'd be somewhat curious if they let you re-enter for the day with your parking pass (parking is now $3).  If you are there on a hot day there are a few places to keep cool on the carrier (the medal of honor exhibit is air conditioned very well for one).
