One of the few honest banks left in this country.

Before, banking was miserable. You always had to find your own bank's ATMs or else a fee would be charged. Even if you did find your own bank and you happened to be out of your home state, you still got charged a fee.

Well, once USAA  came into my life, it was a rapid 180 degree turnaround. No fees charged by them, and refunding the fees charged by other institutions.

Since USAA is an online only bank for most people, they developed and innovative way to deposit paper checks through a scanner or with your iPhone!

I also have an IRA,  renters & auto insurance with them and have had no issues.

If you are eligible, USAA is certainly worth switching from a mega bank or a great alternative to a credit union!

In short, if I could give this lovely financial institution 50 stars I would!  That being said, after 2+ years with USAA, I am still extremely happy with their products, customer service; everything.  First their checking - always reimbursed for ATM fees, cash back on debit purchases and free checks for life.  Nuff said.  I might also add that unlike other banks, USAA posts deposits FIRST then debits, never bounced a check here, and probably never will (you hear me CHASE BANK??!?!  Do Ya?!?!)

Honorable mention to their ROTH, which is kickin' ass and taking names unlike my 401K!  Yay USAA.

If you qualify, I highly HIGHLY recommend banking with these guys!

You know you have something good going when you actually get excited talking about your banking and insurance company. I mean, seriously, how often have I grinned when talking about calling a customer service department? I think, never... at least, until we joined USAA.

Credit union, bank, mortgage company, insurance provider: USAA pretty much does it all. We have been continually impressed with their trustworthy business practices and stellar customer service in each department. I would recommend USAA to anyone and often have.

The service is always terrific. I have called over numerous times for different reasons. As a transplant to the area, I called our insurance provider through USAA and I was almost shocked by the amount of attention the customer service rep gave me. As we looked over an online site, at one point, I said, "Okay, I think I can figure it out from here." The rep, instead of hurrying to hang up, said, "Are you sure? I don't mind walking you through the final steps." It was a good thing, too, because I got confused a few second later and would have had to call back. That girl was great.

USAA is terrific. You can tell they definitely treat their employees well. Seriously, any bank that can make me smile has got to be doing something right.

We've had our insurance with USAA for years (Hubby is a former Marine) and the service has ALWAYS been impeccable.  When we've had auto insurance claims, they've always been handled professionally, promptly and fairly.  In fact, in the rare times that I've been in an accident that wasn't my fault (I'm not a great driver; I'll own it!) and I've had to deal with someone else's insurance company, I've always found it VERY frustrating in comparison to USAA.

We have many other services through USAA (they provide banking, mortgages, asset management/investments, credit card services, life auto and home insurance, umbrella policies - you name it) and the benefit of having them all under one "roof" is that they can work in cooperation with each other to see that you are getting the proper coverage or resources for your situation.  They also send out cute, age-appropriate, educational magazines for your children that cover topics like financial responsibility, safe driving, educational choices, peer pressure.  They are a great way to get kids involved in knowing how money and insurance management works.

The absolute confirmation of WHY with stick with USAA happened today.  Hubby accidentally sent an online payment a couple of weeks ago to the insurance bill, rather than to the credit card company (they both were labeled "USAA", just one line apart).  We got a statement yesterday saying that, of course, the credit card payment is now late (since, because of our mistake, it hadn't been sent) and there was a late fee (of course, we were now ahead on the insurance payment).  One quick call to USAA and the money was transferred from the insurance department to the credit card (reflecting the date the original payment was posted) and the late charge was reversed.  They acted like it was no big deal at all and they were happy to handle it for me.  Try doing that if your car insurance and credit card are with two different companies!

Their customer service is the best, their rates are unbeatable (lowest car insurance rates EVER, lowest credit card interest rates you'll find anywhere and great non-commissioned investment advisors) and their financial status is SOLID (we actually receive a dividend payment each year!)  Truly the cream of the crop.

Checking, Savings, Mutual Funds, Car Insurance....everything has exceeded my expectations from day one.

The customer service is spectacular.  The freebies, perks and discounts still blow my mind ...even though I've been a member for over 16 years.

If you have the military connection or have the good fortune to marry into someone who does...I HIGHLY recommend checking out any of their online quotes and comparison of services.

This is a good place to bank (checking/savings) but not so wonderful to work at. I first got involved with USAA as an employee- let's just say you're lucky if you get a good phone rep because the way (at the time, at least) we were treated.
Make sure if you have wonderful customer service, you praise them or even ask to speak to their manager because they do get a little paper certificate with the praise you give them. The phone rep's do not get commission so if they're trying to push something onto you- its from the manager- not the actual phone representatives (and the rule is so NO 3 times and go)
Even after I quit, I kept USAA as my bank.

I have held a checking and savings account with USAA for about a year already. I am very very very happy with them. The one star off is because I mainly got the account for it's on-line "at-home deposits", which meant I could scan a check and upload the image for an immediate deposit. Unfortunately this only worked about the first two times I did it. It doesn't take into consideration that many checks have watermarks that show through upon scanning - well, those wouldn't upload well, then before I knew it, no check I scanned uploaded well. Not a big deal, we just deposit at Bank of America, and transfer the money, which is then made available within the week. Just wish it wasn't such a long wait to have the funds be made available.

But in general they still have to get about 4.5 stars because their service is just so amazingly awesome!!!! I've NEVER EVER had any problems with anyone from customer service at this bank, and they're all super helpful. I try to make sure I say that into the phone whenever my calls are being recorded, b/c really, USAA just hires the sweetest nicest people in the planet.

USAA is great - been a member for a quite a long time now but just every now and again, you come across someone who's rude (not always but on an occasion or two).  I had one that was extremely disrupting during the call - no apologies, nothing.  And I suppose since I've taught customer service skills for a long time and am very big on giving excellent c.s. to clients, I expect no less when receiving it.  I can overlook a mistake, bad food, poor location, whatever - if the customer service and willingness of an employee to go out of their way for you is commendable.  He, however, seriously lacked in the c.s. department.  I won't ding the whole company on one bad apple though.  Especially since I've had a couple of other people who were more than friendly to make up for his butt.

Overall, I'm happy with them.  I love their products and services and will continue to remain a member as long as they keep providing the services I need.

This is one of those companies that really should have multiple entries for reviews on different types of services.

I have been a long time member of USAA for both insurance and banking, and overall I have been very pleased with the service USAA has provided.

For mortgages though, I would avoid USAA like the plague.  It used to be that USAA farmed their mortgage services out to a company called PHH Mortgage.  We bought two houses through PHH via USAA, and were VERY pleased with the service we received from PHH.

Unfortunately, USAA decided to get rid of PHH and bring their mortgage services in-house, supposedly to improve their customer service.  That backfired on them.  In our most recent home purchase (August 2008), USAA low-balled us and lied to us, and eventually I withdrew my loan application from USAA two weeks before closing escrow and went with a different bank.  I was THAT upset with how poorly the USAA Mortgage people had treated me.

On a positive note, the senior management at USAA seemed very responsive to my feedback on the process, and I sincerely hope they have taken my experience and learned from it to serve other customers better in the future.

Like I said, I've been a long time USAA customer (20 years for insurance, about 10 years for banking), and overall I have been VERY pleased with USAA's service and professionalism.

USAA used to be my all.  I had my checking account with them, a credit card, renters insurance, car insurance, valuable property insurance, and a savings account.  It was only natural that when we decided to buy a home we'd choose USAA.

First, we tried to get pre-approved via their website.  After a typo on my husband's part and an erroneous listing on my TransUnion credit report, we got that all squared away.  Pre-approved!  They wanted to know if we'd like to use their USAA Movers Advantage program, surrrre!  Free money, awesomeee.

We told them we wanted a condo IN the city of Chicago.  In fact, I gave them specific neighborhoods.  USAA set us up with a realtor in a suburb 45 minutes outside of Chicago.  Really?!!?  His website said he specialized in SUBURBS.  City/Suburbs?!  Do they even sound remotely the same?!  I had to call the department back and ask for a new Realtor.

The city Realtor we were given said she had worked with USAA for 10 years.  However, when it came push to shove and she knew we had a VA loan, she didn't know how it worked....

I called USAA, my husband called USAA, our Realtor called USAA and our Real Estate Attorney called USAA and were always told something different.  First off, you never, ever, ever, speak to the same person.  We were told a condo did not have to be VA approved then we were told it did, then we were told it did not.  So, we find a condo that is not VA approved, go under contract and then comes the fun part.

I call USAA and speak with a James Springer, I locked in my rate and gave all the information that was asked.  He asked me and I quote, "do you have the condo ID number?"  Hmm, condo ID number, that must be like a parcel number/plot number, no, but my Realtor would know that.  He then says to lock in the rate and do the contract I have to put a Good Faith Deposit of $600 down and it will come back to me at closing, okay, good to me.

He calls the Realtor and asks her if it's VA approved now, never asked me that.  She said no and he said it would need to be.  I call the VA now and find out how to get the condo approved and the seller's attorney gets all the paperwork and we submit it to the VA and now we sit and wait.  USAA told us until we had the answer our loan would just be on hold, fine by us.

Poof, USAA decides to deny our loan application and oh yeah your $600 is now not refundable.  EXCUSE ME?!  Why is it being denied?!?  We are told because the condo wasn't VA approved.  They knew that!!!!  We are told by yet another person that they will make sure to note that the $600 will be transferred to the next loan if the condo gets VA approved or we find another condo.  Fine.  And, oh yeah, you'll need to do a whole new rate lock and everything.

Our Attorney asked that we call the bank and ask if we can try to start the loan application, again with the contingency the condo gets VA approved.  Now, USAA tells us they didn't know we had a previous pre-approval and loan.  WHAT?!  Oh yeah, and now you need to get pre-approved AGAIN because that loan that was denied is tied to that pre-approval and that all goes away.  You've got to be kidding me at this point.

So, I play USAA's little game again and try to get pre-approved.  Now, magically we are barely approved for the condo amount.  How in the world the amounts changed is beyond me.  Right after this, the VA approves the condo.  Yay!  That didn't take nearly as long as expected and now we can finally move on with this.

I call USAA and find out the rates for the day the condo was VA approved are lower than our original lock, great!  The guy said I'd need to put $600 G.F.D. back down.  I was like ohhhh noo, we already did that!!!!  Ohhh, now I see the money.  Well Jesus Christ I hope you do.  Ohhh, you already had a loan.  Yeahhh, I told you people this a million times!!!

The guy gives me the fax number to have all our supporting documentation faxed to including the contracts.  As you see, I've played this game before, so I'm ready.  55 pages faxed later on a Tuesday, our loan status website says that USAA needs up to 3 business days to review our documentation.

Two days later I check the loan status page and notice our points and rate have changed to the prior amount.  Huh?  Just the day before it read the current locked rate and now it read something a month old.  A phone call to USAA to speak with yet another different person who told us, that's just how it is.  Well, then why did you make me lock in a new rate AND tell me I had to lock in a new rate?!!?  Oh, that was a mistake on our part and I sincerely apologize for that, the manager tells me.  And, then she tried to bully me to stay with them, saying that if I went to any other lender I'd get the same rate and points because it's locked with that period.

I had been documenting my home buying experience on my blog and told the manager, I will never, ever, be doing a mortgage with you all ever, again. Will continue story once I have more space.

USAA mortgage is less than par.   I feel like my mortgage is a peanut in a shell game.   I just closed my first mortgage with USAA a few weeks ago and was very happy with the service up until today.  Today, I received a disappointing letter saying that my mortgage is being transfered to US Bank! If I would have known that they were going to transfer my loan elsewhere right away, I would have taken a different loan offer. Now, I am paying for something less than what I signed up for.... It feels like a shady business practice to transfer a loan before payments begin.  Last week, I recommended USAA to 3 of my friends that were thinking about refinancing, but I am calling every one of them today and rescinding my recommendation.  I am extremely annoyed.

I have been with USAA for 4 years now.  Initially for a savings and checking account: I have now expanded to auto and renters insurance, and just completed my auto loan last year.  I love the quarterly USAA magazine, the end of the year dividend, refundable ATM fees, and  excellent customer service.

When calling USAA on the phone, I have never had an unpleasant experience.  They must have excellent customer service training,  becuase these guys are super polite.  I wish I could give USAA 7 stars.  No complaints!

If I could rate USAA with 6 stars, I would. This is, by far, the best financial institution around. I've been a customer with them for nearly 3 years and I have loved every minute of it. They have all around best services in one umbrella company: Checking, Savings, CD, Mortgage, Auto Loans, ALL types of insurances and much more.

Not only do they treat their customers with the utmost attention, promptness, and courtesy, but they also give back. For example, at the end of the year, I was given a $15 check as part of their annual dividend payout. Although $15 isn't a lot of money, USAA pays their customers a portion of their return as a thank you for doing business with them. I love how exclusive the club is to get in; you will have to have US military affiliation.

Another great reason why I love USAA is their convenience. They have the concept of customer convenience down to a tee: online banking, ATM fees refunds (up to 10 w/drawals at any ATM in the world), online deposits (via check scanning), and so much more.

I give this bank A++++ and would definitely recommend to anyone eligible to get a membership!

These guys give great banking and it just opened up to the public!  For checking it can't be beat.  Free checks, free ATM use at other banks, free checking...heck they even give me money for using them via the cash rewards program.  I also have 24-hour banking via the internet or cellphone.  There is even check scanning available if you want to deposit checks from the comfort of your own home.

For customer service, USAA can't be beat.  Hold times are usually less than 2 minutes.  Even when the market was evaporating back in Sept hold times were usually less than 10 minutes.  The company deserved its recognition as Businessweek customer service champs 2 years in a row for '07 and '08.  For 2009, they got beat by Amazon but it's a wonder how since USAA beat them on nearly all the featured categories.  What's even better is now anyone can use their services except for property and casualty insurance.

Some of the other banks I have had...BofA, Wells Fargo, CalFed.  These banks do not stand up to the service and ease of use the USAA has to offer.  Rates are not always the best, but are competitive.

I've had USAA since 2004, and overall their banking service has been top notch.  Really amazing.  Their customer service reps are always so polite and helpful.  The only issue is that since they don't have real branches, you have to scan your checks, and if for some reason your scanner is down or a check doesn't want to scan, you have to mail it in and wait a few days before the deposit is available.  That can be inconvenient once in a while.

My only problems with them have been with their mortgage dept.  Other companies like GMAC and US Bank do their mortgages and when you have to get transferred over to those companies, the customer service is really horrible.  They're totally bored over the phone and very unhelpful.  The lady I spoke to this morning was just awful, maybe she was getting paid minimum wage or something to take the calls, she didn't make any effort to answer my questions so I finally just told her I'd call my realtor and hung up.  Seriously -- USAA ought to be able to manage their mortgages with THEIR customer service in order to make their customers happy.

Wow I've been a USAA member for well over a decade now. I even got my first credit card through them. Because I got to coat tail my parents credit, I was able to quickly raise my credit limit via them. (not that i wanted it that way).
THey do everything from banking, investing, financial planning and advise, auto insurance, renters insurance, and shopping. And their customer services is TOP NOTCH.
I'm not sure if it's true but i believe this bank has a "we know you" policy. By that they say, we will try to help you as much as I can. I have talked to a worker on the phone and she was sad to leave the company b/c she was moving out of San Antonio.

So i'll end this with a simple statement, if you are eligable to get this bank... GET IT.

It might be a little unfair to yelp USAA since membership isn't open to the public. But I love USAA so much that I can't help sing its praises. I'm like that annoying girl who won't shut up about her new boyfriend. (Did you know Blake's favorite color is blue? Did you know Blake and I both like wine? And food? And breathing? It's like we've known each other all our lives. Did I mention how wonderful Blake is?) Except when I rave about USAA, it's more like this: USAA refunds my ATM charges at any ATM. USAA helped me when I forgot my pin number in Mexico and I was able to get cash within an hour. USAA's car buying service got me a Toyota Corolla under invoice. Car rental companies roll out the red carpet for me when they hear I have USAA insurance. My rates are as low as they come and my coverage is great. USAA gave me a dividend--even in this economy--on my car insurance. USAA has the best customer service ever.

Thanks, Dad, for being a naval officer before I was born so that I could be a USAA member. In my opinion, it's worth joining the military for membership alone, or, at least marrying someone in the military. Heck, I'd marry USAA itself if I could.

Best customer service I've ever had. My parents do the check scanning thing and they have never had any problems making the money available to them immediately. Now that is cool. Cheapest car insurance around too, if you are a reasonably safe driver looking for good coverage, and not just a document to show to a cop if you get pulled over.

Been a member for 10 years.   Best bank on the planet.

Awesome service.  Great rates on credit cards, super low rates on car insurance and renter's insurance.  Rebates me when I use ANY ATM in the country.

I do all my banking online.  With them it's smooth, easy to operate, intuitive.  These guys KNOW how to secure funds and make it EASY to bank.

You do need to have a military relationship in the family to get in (thanks, Dad).   But do ask, because the definition of "relationship" and "family" seems to be adapting.

Hands down the best bank I have ever had.  I can't believe how incredibly consistent the service is with this place.  The strange part about it is that it takes place entirely over the phone.  I have never been to a USAA branch (as they don't really exist).   The great thing is that every time you move, I feel like they move with you.  Because there are no local branches, they specialize in taking care of you wherever you might be living.  Fantastic!

I have do banking, investing, and insurance all through USAA.  Filling out an auto claim was easy when my car got totaled by a drunk driver.

I actually met my first USAA employee in person on a cruise ship.  He was one of the vice presidents and, of course, he thanked me for being a member!  These guys are consistent from the top of the organization to the bottom.

Wow I love these people... its just a whole different way to do banking... namely they consider me a person and are always on the look out for how to take care of me best.

Story: I was with three other friends, about to go out for the evening in North Carolina, so we stop off at an ATM, being in a car we all just passed our cards up to the driver to pull cash out for us. Three of us pull USAA cards from our wallets, and proceed to go on a 10 minute rant about how much we LOVE our bank (which draws the most obscure looks from the 4th passenger in the car, who had some other lame bank).

I just don't know of another bank (or really many other organizations) which can draw such love and devotion from their members. If I could get other friends in on the banking, I would.

A paradigm shift in banking and a paradigm shift in the way we think of how a conventional bank should be.  Is your idea of a bank something that you have to rush and beat traffic to get to a brick and mortar location, find parking and schedule your day's schedule around after they open and before they close?  How about waiting in long lines and on a bad day get someone at the window that will give you a lot of attitude?!?

All these concerns are avoided and done either on the phone or on the web with my bank.  I live in California but my bank is located in Texas!  This idea is nothing new but the benefits from this bank is something members like myself have enjoyed over the years with this awesome bank.  I should also mention that you have to either be in the military, or are related to someone that is or was (retired) to be eligible to join.

Can you scan any check and email it to your bank to deposit it into your account?!?  I can with USAA!  This is not JUST a bank.  USAA has a FULL complement of financial services available from banking, loans, investments, insurance (our homes and car policies are under USAA), retirement plans, etc.  Their rates are usually the best if not the most competitive around.

Some highlights:

* Customer service on the phone is first rate.
* Website is nicely designed, efficient, useful and pretty much everything you need right there.
* Will refund other banks' ATM fees!
* Deposit checks at home with a computer and a scanner!
* No monthly account fees, regardless of balance.
* Free DEBIT card rewards.

Am I NOT seeing something that the non-members do or is it the other way around?!?  :0)

They're quite simply the best bank I've ever used.  The customer service is wonderful.  Credit card rates are low and the ATM fee refunds are great.  I also love the cash rebate for my debate card purchases.  The free financial planning is also a great perk.

It's also amazing to be able to make deposits using a scanner.  It doesn't get any better than that.

This is a rare institution in this day and age: a business that is actually dedicated to the customer's needs. Their customer service is friendly and excellent, never pushy or dismissive.

As for a bank, they are an online-only service, but they offer ATM fee rebates (up to $20 a month) and postage paid deposit envelopes. Their debit card offers a 2% rebate on all credit card charges.

Their savings account APR isn't the best, but they offer different levels and it's a good place to keep some mad-money, while offloading your savings to a higher rate savings account elsewhere. And they don't have crazy fees for transfers.

Their website is well done, with lots of good info and tools. They have a good free bill payment service, and you get discounts on things like TurboTax and rental cars through their member services section.

In short, if you qualify for membership (armed forces personnel and family), I can't recommend them enough. If you don't need a brick-and-mortar bank, then it would be hard to do better than USAA.

USAA seems to be a good company for members and family members of the armed services.  The website is accessible and easy to navigate but to become a member you must be either an active member, a retired veteran, a spouse, or a dependent from one of the branches of the U.S. military.

Certain department's customer service is horrible especially if you have a problem with your account, do not expect a call back from their banking services.  You can leave messages about your issue but do not expect a call back.  They expect you to follow up with the issues.  Member services is nice and friendly but all the other departments who actual handles the services with banking, insurances, and etc forget it.  They are horrible.  As a dependent of retired veteran, I became a member because I heard many great reviews but during these uncertain times of economic distress I feel USAA has slacked.  They are horrible, they want your money freeze it during issues saying they need to "investigate and verification" of pending transactions and will respond in 14 business days all the while your money is inaccessible.  Your account gets frozen but they will still allow deposits from both Federal benefits and your employer.  And you better call them in 14 business days because they will never follow up with you so the whole time your money keeps going into this big huge void pending a response from them.

Sounds ridiculous but it's true.  My aunt who is a VP at Wells Fargo says this is an abnormal practice, usually when an account is frozen during any sort of verification it will not allow any transactions either withdrawal or deposits.  I think this is a scheme for them to increase their capital during the credit economic struggle from the mortgage fallout.

Out of all the years they have been great but now they totally turned SO WATCHOUT FOR USAA!!!

I love USAA.  I started using them for banking about six years ago (I've also had my car insurance with them since I started driving).  I could not find a bank that would let me open a checking account (I made some poor financial decisions when I was younger, so I was blacklisted with most banks).  My sister suggested I try USAA since she had a checking account with them, so I went to the USAA website and within minutes I had my very own checking account.  Woo!

Since those reckless days of my youth, I've become very careful about my money and how I spend it.  I have my checking account, a savings account, my IRA, my credit card, and my auto and renter's insurance all with USAA.  I just have to go to one website to manage all of my accounts.  It used to be kind of a pain to mail in checks to deposit, but now they have the scan-at-home option so your check is deposited in seconds.

It's also nice to be able to go to any ATM machine without having to worry about fees.  While my friends have to go out of their way to go to their banks' ATMs, I'll even use the crappy little ones at the gas station and not worry about the fees.  (The first 10 ATM withdrawals a month are free and they will reimburse you up to $15 per month in ATM surcharges.)

The catch to USAA of course is that you have to be in the US military service or a child of a service member to join.  Thanks Dad!

Best part of giving my life to the Army is USAA.  I use them for everything.  Excellent customer service and their rates can't be beat.  Loooooooove them!

Okay, okay, I admit...I'm biased. My husband actually works for them. But in my defense, I've been with USAA long before I was with him and he actually made fun of me when we first started dating because I banked with a company that existed nowhere.

Now look who's laughing.

As I've said, I've been with them forever (like 7 years I think?). I tried other banks and other insurance companies. I couldn't do it. I couldn't handle the crappy customer service or the horrible rates. No cute gecko could make me happy, I was back with USAA as soon as possible. I can't say anything more than what will just reiterate the other reviews, but if you are thinking about USAA...stop thinking and just do it.

USAA used to be for Officers only.  Thankfully, they extended their service to enlisted personnel.  I've only been a member for 3 years and nothing but praises is what I can give them.  They were not my primary bank until they started offering "deposit @ home."  A week after I closed my Bank of America account...F BofA!

The insurance, unbeatable!  I used to have Mercury Insurance and AAA but USAA beats them both.  For the same amount of monthly premium and deductible, the coverage was higher with USAA 100,000/300,000 compared to Mercury or AAA 15,000/30,000.

Since they have no physical location where I'm from, they allow members to withdraw up to 15-times FREE from any non-USAA bank!  After that, you start paying the FEE but you will get reimbursed at the end of billing cycle.  To help USAA minimize the incurred fee, I do not go to BofA for ATM transactions.

The customer service is top notch as well. They are not outsourced outside the USA like some other banks *cough* WaMu.

Thank you, USAA!

I've been with USAA for about 12 years. From my first bank account, my first credit card, to my first car purchase - they've helped me out with all of it.

The customer service at this company is definitely first rate and that's the main reason I stay with them whether I'm living in San Antonio or Boston. The people that work on their telephone help lines are just as nice and helpful as those that work as tellers in the bank out on IH-10. Their website is pretty hi-tech and the new scanning-deposit thing is definitely a plus for people living far away from the physical building.

Only negatives- watch out for any services that aren't wholly operated by USAA: If you call the 1-800 number for their credit cards it's outsourced (as opposed to the help-line for the actual checking/savings bank) and those people are less helpful and polite than the rest of USAA. Also, car insurance in some states is done through a non-USAA agent. If you have problems the USAA people will try to help out as much as possible, but sometimes they have to turn it over to the outside agent who is rarely as friendly and helpful as the USAA people.

Wow,  I thought I'd be the first to say how great USAA is on Yelp. Silly me, I underestimated how great this company is. I'm not going to add anything new here. The benefits of being a member are great. You can do just about everything off of their website, if you're lost you can always call and everyone I've spoken with is super-friendly. There are times that I'm scared to anger someone there since I use the following services: banking, credit card, insurance (auto and life,) car loan, and brokerage. I will say the downside to their brokerage is that you're limited to the North American markets. I wanted to invest in BAE but it's on the London Stock Exchange, but everything else I wanted to trade was available. I love being able to go to any ATM-and sometimes be able to brag to my friends that I'm not worried about fees. Everyone I know that is/has been in the military has USAA-except for one, and that's because he's been with the Navy Credit Union so long it would be hard to extricate himself.

You don't necessarily have to be a member/ex-spouse or child of the Armed Forces. For example, Federal Law Enforcement, but they change things up so you might want to check first, e.g. Foreign Service officials could at one point, but no longer.

I'm going to wholeheartedly agree with everyone else's reviews.  USAA's banking is amazing.  I've yet to have a problem with any of the postings, the customer service is out of this world, the rates are low, and the interest on our savings is decent.  When I first found out that we'd have to mail all of our deposits to San Antonio, that freaked me out a bit, yet I haven't encountered one problem.  Everything is so fast with them, you'd think they lived next door.  If I'm out of deposit slips, they'll overnight some more to me immediately.  If I'm confused on where to invest my money, they'll transfer me to a specialist (and by specialist, I mean they know more than could ever be hoped for).  I do not have any negative remarks about USAA as of date.  And I don't think anyone else has either since CNN just named USAA #1 credit card with a whopping 95/100.
