Can I have my mail? Please? It's not like I have this burning desire to pay my bills, but I do kinda want to not have my power shut off. Please?

Do not ever put your mail on hold in Somerville, unless you want it to be permanent. We put our mail on hold through the post office website, and no problem, mail stopped arriving. But when I tried to cancel that hold, it was like they wouldn't let me. I cancelled the hold online, and one or two pieces of mail started arriving. I called the post office a week later and spoke with the manager, just to check to make sure they weren't still holding our mail, and he said he never got our cancellation and still had a pile of our mail. He said he'd put through the cancellation and have our mail carrier deliver the held mail (which is what I had requested online). A few days later, still one or two envelopes a day but none of the mail backlog has been delivered. I called this morning and actually got to speak with our mail carrier who said that as far as he knew, our mail is STILL on hold. He says he'll start delivering again!

Moral of the story: do NOT put your mail on hold in Somerville.

I think I now know how business happened in the former Soviet Bloc.  I honestly felt like I was waiting in a f'ing bread line in this place.  Don't get me wrong, the women who were working the counters were as nice as pie, but waiting in line for a half hour to get a couple f'ing stamps is unacceptable.  Dirty, old & waiting in line w/someone who smelled like cigars & poo made me not want to return to this place.

PS  A little hint to management, during peak hours & 10 or more people waiting in line - staff all counters, please?

I've only lived at my current address since April, but when I tried to hold my mail while on vacation (because my mailbox is TINY), and filled out the proper forms, most of my mail was simply dropped on the floor at the entrance to my building. When I checked at the PO to see if there was any more, I was handed a stack of mail, NONE of which was mine. None. And also, my son's mail keeps being returned to sender. Ok, his name is different from mine, but I addedhis name to my TINY mail box, and had mail officially forwarded from our old address. Was there something else I should have done to get all my mail?!

Unlike Roberto, I have have always come in during non-peak times and haven't ever had to wait more than say, ten minutes at absolute max.  I think I've had to wait maybe three minutes once, and Jesse has had to wait for maybe ten minutes before, but that was on the weekend.  There's generally only two ladies working the counter, and they are definitely there full time.  They could totally use another person or two during the busier time, but the service is actually really good and that's why I give them four stars.  The last time we went it was the 23rd of December, and the ladies were cheery and started a nice conversation with us about stamp collecting.  Also, it's a dog friendly place; they never mind me bringing in Ruby.

The Post Office itself is just fine if you go to the building, I'd give it 4 stars maybe.  Its a Post Office, and seems to have always been clean and not too crowded, at least while I've been there.  The one star is for the actual mail delivery.  It appears that they think its good enough if they deliver mail to the general neighborhood.

About 25% of the mail in our box is not for our address, and I can only assume that some of our mail gets sent to our neighbors or who knows where (bills and Netflix envelopes have definitely gone missing).

And although they seem to be strict about "your name must be on the mailbox", that only applies for the current residents. Mail has been delivered for seemingly every person who has ever lived here... about half our mail is for people we've never heard of (and we met the people who lived here before us).

I realize that its a large and complicated job to get mail to the 300 million people in this country... but everywhere else I lived, they seemed to have a handle on it.

So it has been years since I've been a regular at this post office, but I don't remember it being all that bad.  There was a consistent line, but that's b/c Davis is a happenin' place.  You want to be rushed to the front of the line to have your ass wiped with a silk hankie, go to Fed Ex.  Get your stamps or mail your package or whatever you need and get a little Davis Square exposure.  Come in expecting anything else and you're going to leave pissed off.  Parking sucks, but why are you driving into Davis anyway?  Walk you lazy bastards!

I like this place. i feel like there are always dogs in here, which is great. Sometimes there is a line, but for the most part it's a post office and it's in Davis Square-- not much more to say.

This is the full-service post office in Somerville, and this is basically where you have to go if you hold your mail while on vacation or something.  Architecturally, inside at least, the place is like a dirtier and smaller version of the Central Square PO in Cambridge.  There is a visibly dirty mural of the revolutionary war on the left-side wall. The lines are always very long.  And if you don't mind waiting for 20 minutes in line amidst loud cell-phone chatting wannabe hipsters, this place is fine.  Parking always sucks here.  Bring quarters and hope for a spot in the adjacent lot.  Staff is competent, not chatty, but they will not by any means rush, even if the line is out the door. I have, however, seen the staff refuse to show a customer the novelty stamps because she said there were too many people in line.  Which I did not like, because I LOVE to pore over the novelty stamps.  Alas.
