If you have seen "Men in Black" you can imagine what this place is like.  Waiting in line is guaranteed, the employees are behind bulletproof glass, and if your package is found, you will be pleasantly surprised.

On the bright side, some of the employees are genuinely nice.

Final update.  So, a couple of weeks, numerous phone calls from a guy from the post office - (who I asked on two different occasions if he had checked to see if the package might be at the post office) - I finally talked with someone ELSE at this location.

God only knows what the original notice, telling me my package was left with a stranger a couple of streets over, was all about.  Turns out, the package was at the post office all along.  Even though the other person said he already checked - THIS new person found it and said it has been there the entire time.

Sigh.

when someone comes to my door and knocks or rings the bell, both of the dogs GO NUTS barking.  i like this fact, because it means that I never miss package deliveries.  So long as those packages don't come from the United States Postal Service.  the dogs are the reason I KNOW that these people never bother to knock or in any way indicate that they are downstairs with my delivery. they just leave a note telling me to pick it up at the post office.

the post office is NOT CLOSE to my house.  i don't get it, because there actually IS a post office close to my house.  two blocks away.  at 4th and bainbridge/south.  but for whatever reason, instead, packages need to be picked up at 10th and Dickenson. if the packages are large/heavy, this is a pretty significant distance to carry them.

but that's assuming that once you get to the post office, they can actually FIND your packages.  four times now i've had to make the trip over there to pick something up, and so far, two of those trips resulted in them not being able to find my package.  in both instances it was because of mislabeling.  the first time, it turned out that someone filed it under the wrong address in the back.  the second time, someone wrote a description of the box on the delivery slip which did not in any way coincide with the actual box, and the people who work there just didn't bother to actually READ anything else and kept overlooking it. three times.

it would be comical, if it didn't waste so much of my damn time.  the people that work here are inept and possibly illiterate.  unfortunately, i have no real choice in dealing with them, other than to have things shipped via anyone but the USPS whenever possible.  and i do.

Absolutely, unequivocally, the absolute worst post office on the face of the Earth!!!  And, that IS NOT an exaggeration!

If you ever need a large package delivered..... well, you're screwed.  Unless, you have no life, and/or don't mind sitting in front of your door all day waiting for a delivery that may or may not come. And, if your delivery man actually does show, he most likely will not knock or ring your bell.  He'll just slide a pink slip in your door and run like hell back to his truck, just in case you actually heard your mail slot go "clink".  Just do yourself a favor and shoot yourself... at least that will be a quick death.

Side Note:  I am not sexist.  I believe that all people have the ability to be just as intelligent or stupid as their sexual counterpart, blah, blah, blah.  That being said, I like to deal with the women at this branch.  Mark my words, you talk to a woman employee and something gets done.  You talk to one of the men, and you get the perpetual run around.

Every time I have to mail something or pick something up, I realize that it's a matter of days before I switch my voter registration to Libertarian.  No state entity - not even the racket which is the PCLB - can manage to make me more irate than the 10th & Dickinson post office.  When dealing with the majority of the employees there, I can help but think of the Sarah Silverman bit from the episode where she drinks the cough syrup:

Officer Jay: Do you know why I pulled you over?
Sarah: Because you got all Cs in high school?

Except, when referring to this post office, replace "all Cs" with "all F....minuses," otherwise you are giving them far too much credit.  The motley crew of annoying hipsters and decades long South Philly locals, most of which must not be acquainted with how a post office works just add to my charming TWENTY-ONE MINUTE WAIT this afternoon.  Yes, I timed it.  When I walked in and saw the line snaking around the damn lobby at 2:21 pm on a Tuesday, I knew I had to review this place for Yelp and include some details.  Why did I go inside?  I HAD TO MAIL THREE - that's right, THREE - BOOKS THAT HAD SOLD THROUGH AMAZON.  Argh.

There is one heavyset, short-haired blonde 35-45 year old white female employee who is the bee's knees and the only reason I can give this post office 2 stars.  Oh, that, and the fact that it isn't the Point Breeze distribution center at 25th & Snyder, where I've sadly had to go before.

If you have the means, you're better off taking your mail to Snyder Plaza (on Snyder, between Front & Delaware Ave) or to UPS.  Srsly, it's that dreadful.

Damn.  I thought for sure that my review of this post office would be the first.  I guess Philly Yelp is better than its reputation lets on.

So I went to this post office when I was visiting my friend in Philly two years ago.  It was hot hot hot, and the post office was even hotter hotter hotter.  The woman who helped me was really nice to me, and we had an interesting conversation about traveling and postcards.

The building is kind of meh, but it's a post office; what do you expect?

If you want to spend one hour to mail a box or pick up one please visit the US Post office at 10th and Dickinson. SLOW, RUDE and antiquated service is the norm. The post office in hooterville is more efficient.

Get to Post Office early, (meaning 7:50am)]

The doors are open.

Stand behind 2 old ladies in slippers and some guy holding  3 boxes.

Watch as Postal employees prepare for their busy morning.

7:52 am - Postal Employees have successfully prepared for their day and take their place in front of their Plexiglas window.

7:53 am - They stare at you, you stare at them.
7:54 am - They stare at you, you stare at them.
7:55 am - They stare at you,you stare at them.
7:56 am - They stare at you, you stare at them.
7:57 am - Man with boxes sets them on the floor. Staring continues.
7:58 am - They stare at you, You stare at them.
7:59 am -  Anticipation swells.
8:00 am - " May I help anybody?" says the Postal employee.
8:00.5am - Commerce ensues.

I had to suffer through dealing with this horror show of a post office for my mail in my old 'hood for over six years. If at all possible, AVOID AT ALL COSTS! (I'm giving them one star only because Yelp won't let me give then zero.)

They were rude - I got yelled at by someone in back when I dared knock on the magic door after being directed there by the window clerk. And I rarely remember a friendly face or a smile.

They were incompetent - I would take my delivery slip, wait in line (you never knew when you were allowed to knock on the door to the back), and then be told that they couldn't find my package or that it must still be on the carrier's truck (in which case I would find a new delivery slip when I got home from the P.O.). Which meant I'd have to come back and go through it all again. Or they wouldn't leave a delivery slip even though the USPS electronic tracking said they made a delivery attempt. AAARGH!! (Oh, and their self-service stamp machine was out of commission 80% of the time.)

They would delay my mail - many times I would receive weekly magazines a week or two late. No matter how many times I reported it to the regional office, no one could ever figure out the cause.

The place is depressing - what with the thick scratched plexiglass windows the clerks hide behind and the dull and dirty steel gray paint job. And what decorating genius decided to cut a door through the place's one distinguishing feature - its WPA-era mural.

They're still screwing up my mail - since I've moved (a mere 25 miles away) I've had a number of items that were sent to my old address forwarded a month after their original postmark date.

I would only go there to pick up packages (and many times my mail carrier would leave a delivery slip even if I was home!) and would never ever go there to buy stamps or send a package.

Luckily, the super-friendly Penns Landing retail branch on S. 4th Street just below South was much closer and a distinct pleasure to deal with for these things.

OH HOW I HATE THEE!

This post office is awful. I might as well just give my package to a stranger on the street & trust they mail it for me. I'd probably have a better chance of it arriving.

Not the cleanest, most updated, or welcoming post office in South Philly. Luckily, the stamp machine was working and I was able to go in and out without having to wait in the line. There is a nicer, newer one on Broad & Moore.

In my opinion, the super-negative reviews that this post office has gotten are totally unfair. I am an avid Ebay and http://Half.com seller as well as an Internet shopping junkie and I have to say that this neighborhood post office has been the best that I have ever dealt with in regards to communication and customer service. I live only a few blocks away from this post office and my apartment building does not provide a secure place for packages to be dropped off. This post office has always --- ALLLLLWAYS held my packages for me until I am ready to pick them up. Once I get the chance to grab them, rather than standing in line to wait for the next clerk, they normally have a clerk set up in what I like to refer to as the "special package room". This clerk occasionally opens up the door to the room and asks if anybody is there to pick up packages, or rather than waiting for them to ask you can simply knock on the door and hand them your orange pick-up slip. They have never lost anything and they have always been very friendly and helpful.
In regards to shipping, this station certainly needs more clerks at the windows during busy times as the line can be extremely long. However, as long as you have all of your items packed up properly and ready to be shipped, you will surely be taken care of quickly and courteously.

I have found the ninth circle of hell and it is the Southwark Post Office. Every time I go in there, I end up waiting in line for at least half an hour, even if there are only a handful of people in line ahead of me. There's never more than two windows open, and usually just one. The employees take their sweet time doing anything and are more than happy to spend 10 minutes chatting up the little old ladies from the neighborhood who apparently have nothing to do other than hang out at the post office. Those of us who do have places to go and things to do get to wait through seemingly endless conversations about the weather and who's sick with what this week. To make matters worse, they've lost three of my packages (one that I sent, and two sent to me). Poof. Vanished into thin air. The worst of it is, one of those lost packages contained my high school yearbook that my parents sent so I could figure out who all these random Facebook friend requests are coming from. I've spent hours on the phone with Southwark PO and waiting around there for someone to do something useful and find my package, but to no avail. Southwark PO, I hate you.

this is my favourite usps location, actually. especially our postal pal susan!!

seriously, though, this is my local PO, and i love it. i sell quite a bit online, and am always in and outta here, toute de suite, with a maximum of ease and friendliness from all of the worker bees.

when it's not 5 grillion degrees out, it's even a nice walk from casa de frankenstein.

This post office is the worst.  The place is dingy, the postal workers do not care if the line is out the door.  They only have 2 windows open during the most busiest times of the day.  Holidays are horrendous.  I was in line for almost 45 minutes just to buy a book of stamps because the stamp machine was broken.  I like the post office on Broad and Castle Ave.  I am in and out in a flash.

This is by far the worst post office I've experienced in the city -- and that's saying a lot! Bad service, lots of employees just hanging out in the back, all the copiers, stamp machines, etc are broken. Stay away. It's just nasty.

Aw, I'm sad that no one likes this Post Office. I've always had really good luck here. When I sold my textbooks over Amazon, the postal worker checked all of the zip codes and weights of the books and told me the cheapest way to mail it. The line can be a little slow sometimes, but it's nowhere as bad as the one on 9th and Market. My only complaint is that they freaked when I tied my very small dog to the radiator by the door because I didn't want him to get stolen if I tied him outside.
