5 reviews for US Geological Survey
I have this site in my favorites and check it out once a week or so, I always like to know what's up with earthquake activity. I actually find it facinating.
This site is amazing as the others have said. It offers so much.
I couldn't begin to mention all the great info they offer, it's like five websites in one !
I simply click on 'List of Recent Earthquakes' and anything at 3.0 or above come up in red so it's really easy to check out very quickly .
When we had the 5.4 on Oct.30, 07 I was actually writing a Yelp review, so I simply clicked on USGS and knew before it was on the radio or TV !
Great Site !

This review is for the map sales only--I haven't explored the other offerings.
This place is incredible--you can buy three different levels of topographical maps (1:250,000, 1:100,000, and 7.5-minute) for anywhere in the western United States. If you are going on a walk in the wilds and want to have something to lean on in case you get lost, this place is worth a visit. I should know--I just got lost on a hike recently (a day hike turned into a day-and-night hike), so I went here and loaded up on maps for everywhere I usually hike.
The staff is also very helpful, especially the black dude with a bit of a western twang--he's a sharp, can-do problem solver. I asked some dumb questions and he came back with quick, respectful answers. I asked a good question, and he came back with a thoughtful answer. I don't know why such competent people are working at retail map sales.

If it wasn't for them our understanding of earthquakes would be zilch, nothing, nada. These folks spend tireless hours monitoring crustal movements and studying earthquakes and volcanoes to learn about them. What they learn can then be translated into useful knowledge about how to protect ourselves from such calamities in the future. This is not an exciting place to stop but it is interesting nonetheless and you can pick up a cool topographic map in the gift shop. Those are pretty useful for hiking/backpacking and if nothing else are cool to look at.
