Yet another example of why the East Bay rules - the family affair at Periscope/Urbano/Eden Canyon is a must visit!
We held my wife's 40th birthday celebration at Periscope and it was a huge success. Brendan, Periscope's owner, could not have been more relaxed and accommodating. He supplied the glasses, the tables, the sound system, the projector and of course, along with Urbano and Eden Canyon, the vino. The winery is a hip, urban cellar setting and was able to fit our 70+ guests (see pics). Our family and friends had a blast and were impressed by the friendly staff and the yummy wine.
Did I mention they make some kick-ass wine too? Not you're every day, run-of-the-mill stuff, but unique, fun approaches to zin, syrah and cabernet. Brendan, Fred, Bob, Elaine and David are some of the nicest, non-snooty wine experts you will ever meet. Really nice people who want nothing more than to share their craft and their passion with you. No tasting fees and very reasonably priced wines means you have no excuse.
Periscope, Urbano Cellars and Eden Canyon - Mahalo, mahalo, mahalo! -

Warehouse-y new space with local artwork and good wines. 1 of my faves is their Zinfadel & Sangiovese. Friendly winemakers who recently opened their new tasting room in Berkeley. A good East Bay spot to impress out-of-towners or visit something new.

An un-expected rendezvous, an encounter by chance - was this fate? We arrived at Periscope Cellars for a tasting and Urbano happened to have a table set up there that day. The moment their Sangiovese touched my lips and swirled around my tongue, I knew I had to take it home. I fell fast and I fell hard, which isn't unusual for me. What can I say? I know what I like. It was instantly my favorite wine of the day.
My husband insisted the Zinfandel was better. I pouted and pointed at the Sangiovese. He shook his head and pointed back to the Zin. We eventually ended up getting bottles of both.
I opened mine last night, in celebration of finishing my half marathon 10 minutes under my goal. As I put my nose into my glass and inhaled the medley of fragrances, I was instantly transported back to Periscope and I smiled.
As Mr. N took a sip, he quietly mentioned: "This is really good."Listed in: Wine is the answer.

Tucked into the tasting room of Periscope Cellars in Emeryville, Urbano Cellars (Winery #3 in EB Wine Tour) was an unexpected treat.
At first I was not impressed because they served a Rose. Hump.
The 2006 Petit Verdot almost made me call someone else to be the DD for the trip (I was only taking tiny little sips for a taste). The 2005 Old Vine Zinfandel almost pushed me over the edge. I had to buy a bottle of both to keep my sanity.
Urbano Cellars offers quality wines at a very, very reasonable price. Everything was between $14-$19.
Seriously, why go anywhere else when you can stock up at one stop Periscope/Urbano!Listed in: East Bay Vintners, East Bay Wine Tour #1

The "free wine tasting of a great selection of wines" the owner advertises is a lie ...because if you taste them, you will buy them!
If you're into wine, you've got to check the places. For real. -

Bob's wines are the other good reason to come to Periscope, especially on Wine Wednesdays! I love the Syrah and the Sangiovese, and like the Petit Verdot. WIth that, and Andrew Lane, the reasons are growing like, uh, grapes . . . on . . . a . . . vine. Groan.
(side note - Periscope, along with the Urbano and Andrew Lane wines they taste, was just featured in Eye on the Bay! Yours truly and JP were in the background posing as wineaux. No acting skill required! ;-) ) -

After Periscope rolled out the red carpet for our group, we shifted three steps to the left to try Urbano's tasting selection.
Unlike Periscope's more aggressive wines, Urbano presented a long flight of subtle California varietals, each with unique flavors and aromas. The Gamay Noir Rose was one of finest front porch wines I've seen since my last bottle of Amador Mission. But the deeper reds delivered the goods. The Petit Verdot, Old Vine Zin, and Sangiovese each presented unique flavor profiles that disregarded the expected norms of UCD-formula North Bay wines. I grabbed two out of three.Listed in: It's not Napa and Sonoma

Located in Periscope is their cousin winery Urbano.
I really enjoyed meeting Fred too, his wines were different & his last name made me giggle. Sorry but it just does (it's Dick, there, I said it)
When I saw he had a Rose, I paused.. "eww, is that like White Zin?" I found myself asking and he rolled his eyes to that one and educated me on the differences.
I enjoyed the Petit Verdot and the Zinfandel most. The Sangiovese threw me for a loop, as it was the most tamed version of that varietal that I have ever experienced. Very trippy, but good.
All his wines were very reasonably priced too at around $15 per bottle.
Fred poured a hefty tasting of all his wines and when I fell in love with the Zinfandel, he poured me another glass. So, that is the one I got. :)
Very smart marketing plan on his behalf. Just give my ass a drink and (apparently) I'll do just about anything.
I'll be back to enjoy Urbano when I come for Wednesday wine nights. This place is a blast! -

I like Bob. I like his wine. The rose was great, and I'm a sucker for the Petit Verdot. Maybe I just like saying it. Maybe it sounds like a French actress that melts in your mouth...I don't know.
It's conveniently located in one of my other favorite wineries, Periscope Cellars. They feature Urbano Cellars at their free tastings as well during their "Wine Wednesdays" happy hour.
A great local business and urban winery right in my own backyard. I look forward to his future bottled goodies!Listed in: You Know, I Know, WINO!

I am glad we did. They make some fine wines. I only regret not having more to spend here. Along with Periscope, people would be well served to go on the East Shore Wine tour. Don't go here first. Go here once your prepared for a little laid back fun and GREAT wine!Listed in: The Wine List, Bay Area Wineries

Great wines. I'm glad that I was able to try them at the shared facility of Urban Legend Wines. The old vine Zinfandel and the "5 barrel" (blended red wine) were the best. Both are full of flavor and everyday wines. I'm a fan.

Rose was not my favorite. Sangiovese was OK. Petite Verdot was OK. Old Vine Zin in the barrel was yucky I thought. I want to support a local vineyard but I will have to give them some more time and revisit them when they have some different wines than I just tasted.

I found most of their wines overripe and unbalanced. Their rose tasted like wastered down Kool Aid. However, their Petit Verdot was pretty good.

Woo hoo! Urbano! My favorite is their 06 Sangiovese. I am a happy consumer of Urbano's liquid happiness.
