I'm really conflicted about what to rate this restaurant. I want it to succeed as it's not bad, but in the end, I can only rate it a "meh."
To explain a little, I think for Tallahasse, it's pretty good food and the decor is fairly cosmopolitan. However, were Urbane plunked down in the middle of a foodie town like Los Angeles, San Francisco, or New York, it would quickly fade into the background - execution is a little clumsy and heavy-handed.
If you're looking for a nice place with decent food, it's worth a try, but if you're really picky, you'll go away sated, but not really impressed.
The food is soooo good! I love it. And I really like the different flavor butters they serve with your bread. My husband ordered the appetizer with shrimp in it. It was sooo delicious. I got the salmon entree and it was spectacular. My salad was the bomb! If my drink from the bar was perfect. We will definitely be back. It's a little pricey then what you usually pay in Tally so when we do go back, it will be a treat. I don't mine paying extra if it's worth it and to me, it was. Now if you a buffet eater and like big portions of food, you may be disappointed. But for my husband and me, the portion was perfect.
Urbane is Tallahassee's most recent new-American, foodie type restaurant to open up, catering to the capital crowd. I came here for dinner on a weekday and there weren't many other diners. The menu is definitely southern inspired and includes pizza and pasta as well as your standard meat/fish dishes. I had the butternut squash and jalapeño soup, which was very tasty and delicate with a nice touch of spice. For my entree I had the sea bass with chinese broccoli (I was so excited to see this -- I love chinese broccoli !!) and it was tasty and well-cooked, though not so irresistibly delicious I had to scarf down the entire thing. I guess my standard for a really good meal has become whether or not I seriously consider purging so that I can eat the rest of it. I'm pretty sure this says something horrible and postmodern about me. Anyway, I took home a pumpkin cheesecake for dessert that brought a tear to my eye.
I like the design of the restaurant -- it's modern but not too cold -- and the service was good. I felt a little strange eating here because I think it mostly contained people passing through and legislature types... almost like a hotel restaurant. It was too expensive for me to defend returning any time soon, but I'll definitely be back someday.
