Category: Juice Bars [Edit]
Neighborhood: Brooklyn/Fort GreeneI stopped by one summer afternoon and ordered a mango smoothie. Not too hard to mess up, am I right? Mango juice, yogurt, maybe some chopped mango pieces, a little OJ or some other filler to round it out would be acceptable. I don't know what they did back there, but the result bore no resemblance to anything I would associate with mango. Or anything edible, really. It was like drinking unsweetened cake batter. And the whole thing took like 10 minutes, and I don't recall getting a smile, a "hi", a "thanks", a little small talk, nothing...
Needless to say, I'm never going back.

The BEST!! Cozy atmosphere and great food. Try the fresh muffins or the jam tarts. Also the soups are incredible. All homemade, right there, from organic ingredients. Urban Spring is one of the best restaurants anywhere - it's not just the food (organic, locally grown, super healthy) but also everything else. The architecture is all recycled old woodwork from a church. Very cool. The people who work there couldn't be nicer - they are very knowledgeable. Fresh smoothies, interesting sandwiches etc. A great find.

Round the corner from Smooch is Urban Spring, a rather quaint little juice bar that also serves organic/bio-dynamic and minimally processed foods (which is why it gets 5 stars!) Although I was already full from my lunch at Smooch, I had to try something. I wanted something sweet and the only option was a truffle. Since Rinaldo, the guy behind the counter, had been so very nice and came out to talk to us as we were gawking at the menu outside, I decided I had to go in and try it. Made out of raw chocolate, nuts, coconut and agave, it was delicious in a this-won't-be-making-me-feel-guilty kind of way. I felt positively healthy after eating it :-)
The menu doesn't have much more in terms of sweet stuff, but they have a serious looking smoothie menu (this was not the weather in which I wanted to try one of those). They also have sandwiches, soups, and a couple of breakfasty type things.
Really liked this place and wish it was a little (a lot) closer to where I live... Worth checking out for sure!

Urban spring Urban spring Urban spring! Just like it sounds. This is such a lovely juice bar with ooooohhhh so much more! When I'm on my way to teach in Fort Greene Park and I need a little pick me up, I get a shot of wheatgrass which is the freshest you'll find in the area! It's got a sweet tang to it!
They have the most inventive smoothies (mango-lime-ginger) and the freshest juices which they'll add spirulina or chlorella or protein or whatever you want, to it. In addition they have this incredible tahini-molasses-and-fruit sandie that I am so into right now! It's really just a healthful version of PB&J. I'm gonna get on the white bean hummus and avocado sandie next. Sounds so delish!
They make super yummy raw treats. And yesterday I had a sweet potato soup with ginger that just made working out in the cold so worth it! If you're in the Fort Greene area, or are heading towards the park to have a nice chill day, stop by Urban Spring--they're doing the right thang!
