Got the best haircut here by Duane. He spent a lot time with me after I got butchered at another salon. I was very very impressed with his techniques and his knowledge of hair.

I should preface this review by stating that I am extraordinarily picky about how I have my hair done. But, as I did at Urban Pearl, I feel that if you're dropping $125 on a cut and color, you're allowed to be just a little bit picky. In addition, I should point out that I waited a couple of weeks after the appointment to see if the cut I got here grew on me. It has not....
I will say that, while I was unhappy with the general service at the salon, the guy that cut my hair did a good job with the cut itself-it just wasn't the cut I necessarily asked for or wanted. And therein lies the problem. I asked for a simple trim up for my long bob-pretty straight forward. No layers, not a lot of length off-just trim up what's there. Well, he decided to start texturizing my hair (I protested, but he assured me he would not texturize a lot.) Now I have texturized hair all over the bottom of my hair, so much so that it looks like layers and a bit like split ends if I don't meticulously flatiron it. I understand that some people like the funky, texturized look. I do not (at least on myself) so it was extremely frustrating that he not only did it after I said I didn't like it, but that he did it so heavily. As he finished doing my hair, he said that he didn't really think what I was asking for would look good, so he took some liberties. Not ok.
As a side note (and I'm trying hard to not be too harpy here) he kept commenting on how straight my hair is. My hair isn't straight. In fact, it's quite wavy and curly, so it was disconcerting that he was convinced it was so straight. A hairdresser should be able to identify the texture of hair at the least.
Anyway, if you don't mind a hair dresser that takes a lot of liberties (without you necessarily knowing it) than you might like Urban Pearl. I, personally, prefer Voodoo Hair Lounge. -

walking in to Urban Pearl can be a little intimidating- this place is hip. Like uber hip. Like way hipper than me.
However, once you get settled in you realize that while the place may be uber-cool, thy don't care that you're not.
The cuts and color here are great, the prices are reasonable, and they always offer to have you come by for a "touch up" (which I assume is complimentary) the next day if you are not 100% satisfied.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Kate S.
I desperately deeded a haircut and color after several months of root grow-out and split ends. After reading Yelp reviews I decided to give Urban Pearl a try.
First off, it's awesome that you can have your hair done in Bouder and not have to pay for parking. What a nice change of pace to NOT have to fight the Pearl crowds. Secondly, Urban Pearl just feels cool. I loved the vintagey trunks as stylist stations and the street signs above the sinks. I was definitely a little out of my comfort zone because I tend to be more prep than hipster, but I was greeted warmly by the staff and Otis (their giant canine mascot).
My stylist was wonderful in explaining how she likes to do hair and how she could give me what I was looking for. I had been blonde for about three years, and was tired of seriously visible roots every few weeks. When I told her what I was looking for, I thought we were on the same page, but after a few highlights and some all-over color I knew things weren't what I had been expecting.
I think part of it was my fault that I didn't properly explain that I wasn't looking to go all-over brunette just yet, but I didn't feel like there was much of a consultation. I can't say I'm unhappy with how my hair turned out but it was just... unexpected. My color is actually really gorgeous and I've gotten tons of compliments. My haircut was basic (just like I asked for) so I'm more than pleased that I was able to keep my length and add some layers.
Don't get me wrong - I am definitely going to make another appointment at Urban Pearl, but this time I'm going to be more clear about exactly what it is I'm looking for. -
Review from Diane K.
I have been hopping hair salons these past 3 years in Boulder trying to find a stylist I like that wont move on me! I finally feel confident that I have found one I can count on.
Masyn is a rockstar! Not only is she entertaining to talk to (I specifically enjoy when she reminisces about the crazy near-miss car/bike crashes that happen at the intersection outside her window), but she is skilled with the scissors.
I have long hair, and love sassy layers with swoopy bangs. No stylist took my "seriously, more layers!" comment seriously, until Masyn. I usually like to get my hair cut every other month, but have been away for the summer. Her cut has held up from April to August. It still looks good! Since it has kept so well, I have been able to postpone going to someone I don't trust. I just rebooked with her today! -

Lafayette, CO
I tried a salon in Lafayette who said they were capable of razor cutting my hair. They failed. I called Urban Pearl, and was scheduled with Greg. I had a horrendous time finding the salon because Google navigated me to their old location, even though it showed the new location as my destination. Needless to say, I was severely late, but they were very helpful and promised to still get me in once I got there. The salon was very laid back, which I loved. Otis, the great dane who hangs out at the salon, is AWESOME and immediately won me over.
All that aside, Greg was great! He listened to what I wanted, and asked questions to make sure we were on the same page. I wound up with an awesome cut. I'm so glad I've found my stylist here in CO! -

So, uh..I have this secret: I've been cutting my own hair for the last year or so....usually done when I think it is a good idea (i.e. beer number 3). Anyway, as you can probably see from my pictures...this gives me a sort of scraggly look....which in all honesty I don't mind.
But then my mom comes to town and simply said, that shit just ain't going to fly anymore son.
Needless to say, we were walking along Pearl, saw this salon, and I was swiftly brought in to once again look like a respectable young person. Little did she know that I planned on keeping my longish hair....haha!
Anyway, a tattooed dude named Jacob sat me down, did the whole shampoo thing, and meticulously trimmed my hair to make it look even (something my inebriated scissors were not doing correctly. Look, scissors, I've already told you several times that I think you have a problem...I mean for Christs-sakes, you are an inanimate object!). All this was done with the buzz of the tattoo gun working in the back (separate tattoo parlor located in the back) and the subject of tattoos on our lips. The music was typical hair-salon music...they played a techno song I know well and love. (Yes I like techno, what. you want to take it outside bub?)
The total was $35 for a job well done. It was worth it (or at least my mom and girlfriend think so...me personally, well I don't look at my hair all time now do I), and I think I will be going back. -

I found them through Yelp
when I really needed help
with my hair gone frizzy
It almost made me dizzy
LOL I know I am almost singing, but that's the hair making me do it.
I totally love what "Marion" did to my nearly ruined hair. She bought it back to life. It took her a good two hours, but she gets curly hair.
Even after a good two weeks, it looks like I just got out of the salon. Yay!!
Marion also gave me tips on how to keep my hair nourished and good looking all the time.
Thanks yelpers! -

One of Boulder's hippest little joints, Urban Pearl Salon and Spa is actually a cultural epicenter masquerading as a salon.
Yes, you can get a hipster haircut here, but they also have a top-notch tattoo parlor in the back--Rising Tide--and an art gallery consisting of the basement and the salon. They've got quality stuff here, and I suggest making this a regular stop on your First Friday art tour.
In the past they have even had events, like movies, in the basement space. I would love to see more. -

Finally I found a great salon. After living here for over a year and painfully experimenting with a few stylists I found a jackpot. I must say multiple extremely positive reviews on Yelp guided me in the right direction. Thank you Yelp.
Ann Castro did my hair and I am very happy with both the color and cut. I will happily be back. My husband is going there this Sat to get his. -
Review from Amy F.
I had just discovered Urban Pearl one cut before shaving my head for St. Baldrick's, and was bummed that I wouldn't need another hair cut for ages. Imagine my surprise when the stylists from Urban Pearl were the ones volunteering to shave heads!
Amy kept my hair looking cute throughout the awkward growing stages, and when she left Susi kept up the rockin' cuts. Lots of credit to these ladies for making a girly-girl confident with her super-short hair! I only give them 4 stars because Amy pretty much disappeared off the face of the Earth, and I hate it when stylists do that! -
Review from Amanda T.
I just had my first cut & color there. After having bad experiences with a lot of places in Boulder, I have finally found a place that meets my expectations. My stylist was Ann and she is AMAZING! She took a good 15-20 minutes to chat with me about color and cut options that she felt would fit my needs. The result is amazing cut and color.
I also like the fact that this is truly a funky and fun salon. Many places claim to be that (hi there FIX) but really aren't anything special. This place has the fun vibe with out being hyper. I'm all about hyper, but not when I'm getting a coif. I loved the music choices!
Thanks yelpers for helping me find this hidden jewel...I will definitely be a repeat customer with Ann @ Urban Pearl! -
Review from Hannah E.
I asked Emmy for a cut that would look good air-dried and with no styling product, since I'm way low maintenance and will never do anything more complicated than get out of the shower and run a comb through my hair. I showed her one picture that had the front I wanted, and another that had the back I wanted - then I rambled on and on about how I actually wanted the cut different from the pictures. I'm shocked I didn't completely confuse her.
I left the salon that day looking incredibly different (I'd say at least 6 inches came off of my head) and slightly shell shocked. I spent two days uncertain.
Once I figured out how to style it like she had, though (the 'trick' is to not tuck your hair behind your ears while it's drying... that's it!) I realized what a wonderful cut Emmy had given me; all I had to do was step out of the shower, let my hair dry IN FRONT OF my ears, and I magically had a swishy, choppy, perfectly shaped bob that looked like I'd spent hours coiffing it. The second I stepped out of my house, I had a neighbor ask me what salon I went to because she wanted a bob too.
Everyone at Urban Pearl was extremely nice and laid back (I particularly enjoyed the dogs wandering around the salon; others may not) and I felt comfortable being in there, even though I am decidedly not 'bohemian' in the least (their website proudly proclaims their 'bohemian makeovers', whatever the hell that means).
After I went home and looked in a hand mirror, I realized the back wasn't as short as I wanted, and Emmy was great about setting me up a quick appointment to come have it fixed up. It took less than ten minutes.
I had a little weirdness, though, with my initial appointment-making. I phoned and asked if they had an appointment available same-day, they said no and hung up before I could ask for another day; so I just walked in later to make my appointment in person. The girl at the front desk initially suggested I look elsewhere on the Mall! That seemed weird to me. "Oh, we're full today, have you tried other salons?" That's the only reason for the four stars as opposed to five.
But the bottom line is, the haircut was fantastic. I'll try to post pictures of it soon! -

I decided to splurge and stop letting the Aveda students wreck my hair. I found Urban Pearl and am so glad I did. I walked in a platnium blonde bob and walked out a redish dark dark brown with awesome bangs (which is always the test for a haircut) and tons of layers.
Mason was my stylist and she was friendly and obviously knew her shit. The atmosphere is stylish and artistic, but not pretentious. A great dane was sleeping on the couch and there were actually decent magazines to read. The only downfall is the price, but for those of you used to higher priced salons they are actually reasonable. Not to mention professionals deserved to get paid! -

I've been going to Urban Pearl for almost a year and have had 3 different stylists- each amazing. They have created and maintained a haircut that I absolutely love and there's never any pressure to get color or buy products. They are professional and always friendly- worth the extra $$ for a haircut that maintains itself for months after getting it!

For men:
FINALLY!!! A place where a man can get his haircut comfortably.
I've always been scared to go get haircuts in Colorado. I'm very picky about my hairstyle and from my experience, only few can make me happy after a cut.
Yelped this place and set an appointment to get my hair did. =P
The place is pretty nice. Love the interior design in that place and people are very friendly. I brought a picture of a guy that had the haircut I wanted, met with Ann Castro (Stylist), showed her the picture, and BAM, I had the haircut I wanted! She was very friendly and does complimentary trims after a few weeks if you need it. She's very experienced and it shows when she cuts. She'll be my permanent stylist as long as I'm in Colorado. Only thing is, it's pricey. 40 bucks for the cut, but remember, complimentary cuts which will last your hair longer. =) -
Review from Singh A.
I've been looing for a place to get a decent cut. Been tired of that 'super-cuts' style if you know what I mean, while it may be cheaper - when it comes to hair I'm willing to $pend, splurge - it's all about style! After all, why not invest in something that has to be perfect b/c everyone else will know if it isn't. You can't hide a bad hairdo. If it can't be fixed with another haircut, you get stuck with it for days/weeks on end!
Now, I've been trying to grow my hair a bit longer, but since my last haircut more than a month ago I've been starting to look a bit shaggy. My burns were gettin outta control! Searching for a salon that has been tried and tested I found Urban Pearl, and like Amanda T., the same hairstylist did my hair and I highly recommend her too! I opted for the wash/cut, I told Ann the look I was going for and she knew exactly what I meant. And the service wasn't rushed at all - she took the time to snip, trim, and buzz my hair and now I can officially state that I look like a groomed man should. Pretty chill atmosphere (I concur with George S. on that), laid back and definetely trendy decor that makes you feel relaxed. I think I just found me my stylist. -

Unfortunately I was only able to go here three times before moving out of the area. I went from shoulder length hair to graduated bob and Rigpa did such an awesome job!!!
She taught me how to style it myself and we had great conversation. I also got my eyebrows waxed here and they did a terrific job.
Most of all i loved the atmosphere. Laid back, funky, cool and the cutest great dane in the whole world. Its worth the money (~$45 cut) just to chill out with some cool people for a couple hours. -

I love Anne Castro!!!
She does an absolutely amazing job. I measure a great cut by how long you can go before you need another. I haven't been able to make it in for a little over three months and I still get compliments on my hair like it's a fresh cut.
Maybe I have easy hair, but I doubt it, whenever I air dry I get that whole everything-curls-to-one-side thing going on, meaning one side curls under and the other curls out and I look like something Warner Brothers just pulled out of a high wind. With a quick blow dry (and I'm a mother of a toddler and run my own business - everything personal appearance related is done quickly) and no products it looks really great every day.
Go here! -

Relocating to a new area, it's always tough to find a good place to get one's hair cut. After my roommate recommended Urban Pearl, I went out on a whim and got my hair cut. It was great!
The atmosphere is chill - relaxed, great music, tattoo parlor in the back. My stylist - Annie - was unbelievable. She helped work with me to find a hair style that fit my personality and was also great to talk to. I'm very picky about my hair and I usually hate every cut - but this was great!Listed in: My Favorite Places in The…

Denver, CO
I was in desperate need for highlights and a cut before the holidays but, like my shopping, I put it off until the last minute. I usually go to a stylist in Castle Rock that I have known since high school, but she had taken time of for the holidays. I then called Luxe Salon in Denver, which I had gone to once and loved, but they didn't have any junior stylists available on such short notice. I hopped on Yelp and read all the great reviews for Urban Pearl and made the call. Luckily for me, Suzi was available and they fit me in :)
The atmosphere of this place is great, and better yet, there's FREE parking. Yes, FREE parking in Boulder. I was beginning to think it didn't exist. The salon was warm and welcoming and the receptionist took my jacket and made me tea. Suzi really consulted with me to find out exactly what I was looking for. I have been getting highlights all year, and they were starting to get a little too blonde, but I didn't want to go too dark either. The result was a gorgeous gold/honey color that is perfect for winter. The cut is amazing-- I have a cowlick where my bangs grow and so they are a little finnicky at times, but Suzi cut them just right so they're not too long, but don't need half a pound of styling creme to hold in place.
We had great conversation throughout and I felt very welcome.
My ONLY suggestion would be that they either post prices somewhere or let you know what you can expect come cashier time. My all-over highlights and cut was 165. Not outrageous (I've paid more at a different salon in Boulder) but a little on the steep side. Considering my history in the service industry, I NEVER tip less than 20%, so 2 hours, awesome cut and color, and $200 later, I definitely considered it my gift to myself for xmas.
Other than that-- this place is definitely a gem and unique as the city in which it resides. -

I've had similar experiences to many people posting here. I went all over Boulder looking for a place to get my hair cut. It's really not that difficult, either, but outside of a place at the mall on Longmont(!), everyone messed it up.
Then one day my mom (!!) told me to go see Amy at Urban Pearl. She gives me the best cut time and time again. And she's a total blast to talk to. She takes the time to find out what you want before she starts snipping away and never rushes you during the whole process. She even does the hot towel on the neck followed by a straight razor shave. Dude.
The shop is always chill and there's always a good vibe inside. I actually don't mind if I have to wait (which is pretty rare).
I also have to give a huge shout out to Phill at Rising Tide Tattoo in the back. He has done both my tattoos and they're perfect. The man is a true artist. -

Just like with any new hair salon.. I was wary of this one but my coworker recommended it & I must say I'm impressed!! Got a haircut this AM with Ann Castro and I love it!! Granted I didn't change my hair much but she texturized it and shaped the long layers.
I have very thick and long hair so sometimes it's difficult to find the right shape for it. She did a great job by taking her time and explaining what she was doing. Also she showed me new hair styling tips!!
The salon is chic and the people are friendly and non pretencious. The price is was well within my budget but to be honest I wouldn't have mind paying more.
If you are looking for a hair place in Boulder.. This is the one to go. Hands down 5 stars :) -

I have been looking for a salon that is not in Denver and I have finally found it!
A customer came into my work and I told her I loved her hair and she told me that she had just had it cut at Urban Pearl. I made an appointment with Marian (Marion?sp). She did an awesome job and listened to exactly what I wanted. I have long, wavy and thick hair and I like long layers- but they never last or show up when it's wavy. Marian did an awesome job and it looks good blown out and wavy.
I ended up waiting for my appointment a few minutes- not a big deal, seeing as salons are usually behind in my experience. Marian felt bad about it and gave me a discount- so unnecessary, but definitely a nice thought.
The prices are about the same as nicer salons in Boulder and I left with my hair done- not wet like I did once from Tapestry.
It is located just east of mountain sun, tucked back a little bit. I walked by it trying to find it. -

I went there again, wanted something different, but to keep the length, unfortunately it just didn't work, unless I was shooting for frumpy. It just didn't sit right, no matter how I washed it or what I did drying etc, the back just didnt look right.
Luckily I have a lot of hats, cause it looks like I'm back on the quest to find someone here, that cuts like back East.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Coming from nyc, I didn't know where I was going to get a good haircut. Whew! Who knew there'd be such an awesome salon in Boulder? And after being there a few times, I can trust these girls.
First time, Annie gave me an awesome cut that left my long hair shiny and bouncy - just what I asked for. I also went in for a bang trim and she fit me in the same day! A great haircut somehow was only $40
Second time was a hair emergency. The luscious brown at home box dye came out BLACK. I looked like the lonely goth kid sitting alone in the cafeteria. It was baaaad. Since Annie was booked up, they slid me in with Marion. She was amazing. She fixed my hair with Eliminate, and made it the right color. My hair was probably pretty fried after all the chemicals from the box dye and the salon chemicals, but my hair was so so soft. After everything was done, it was only $100. What a deal!! I want to hug them every time.Listed in: Boulder

Ok, so Urban Pearl has gotten plenty of "this place is the Bomb!" type reviews, and even though I haven't been steered wrong yet on Yelp I thought I should go in with a clean slate and just see how it actually is, no hype. And this place IS the bomb!
From first setting up my appointment and later walking in, I knew that this place was different. There's this cool vibe that everything is just simmering in. The whole place was abuzz, tons of people in chairs, happily chatting, the snip snip of scissors, a couple of dogs were snoozing on a couch, seemed like there were many regulars that were just showing up to get their usual cut. This was like the 'Cheers' of hair cutting places, just with more tats. I just wanted to hang out for as long as possible.
These guys are hella friendly and can give you a great cut. Emmy the 'Hair Sorceress' knew what I was going for on little info and gave me a killer razor cut, no pun intended. I'll be back for sure. -

Over a year later and I still love getting my hair cut here! I like the new location near Ideal Market - it's much easier to park and they are now open on Mondays too. Melissa left after my first cut and now a really awesome guy named Greg is doing my 'dos and he is wonderful! Hopefully he sticks around. He's been able to fit me in at the last minute for involved 2-part dye jobs and pre-interview haircuts which is great, plus he makes me look top-notch. I went in for my obligatory fall/winter overhaul and came out black and bright pink. It looks amazing! I have friends doing double-takes when they see me and strangers telling me how great my hair looks. Greg told me that their new dye has specific ionic properties so it shouldn't fade or discolor over time and if it does start to turn light pink, orange, etc to come in and they'll fix it straight away. I love being able to go to a place where I know I can trust the staff to make me look cooler than I already am!

Definitely lived up to my expectations. The atmosphere was really cool without seeming too stuck-up or pretentious, and I felt comfortable in the salon. Emmy did a fantastic job on my cut/color, but more importantly, she understood what I wanted! I explained what I hoped to do with my hair in a very non-technical way, as I don't have much knowledge about hairstyling, but she completely understood and was on the same page as me. This was impressive, especially considering some of my past experiences with hairdressers. Altogether, I was really pleased with my visit here. I will absolutely be coming back here for my next cut, and I would recommend it to others as well!

What can I say about the fabulous Chloe. I live in SF, CA but grew up in Boulder, and I basically don't get my haircut until I come back to Boulder to visit. She is not only a total sweetie but has fantastic vision and skill when it comes to hair. She always gives me just want I want when I don't even know I want it. I have been doing my own hair for years despite common sense... I am terrified of stylists. But as I am headed to NY and will be doing some interviews/meeting lots of new people i braved Urban Pearl. Chloe is hands down the best stylist I have ever been to! She really pays attention to what type of hair you have, how you style it, what you want to change, and she will tell you straight up if your ideas are bad and coaxe you in the right direction. She explains all the products she uses and the chemistry involved in putting them on your hair. I went to her twice, and both times came out looking grrrreat! I definitely recommend her. I don't know about the other stylists here but I am sure they are great as well. They are slightly more expensive than I expected, but worth it. I only wish I could kidnap Chloe to NY with me next month! The place has a nice, friendly, unpretentious vibe. There is a huge Great Dane that has the run of the place and has no qualms about jumping up to sit next to you on the couch while you wait. The only thing I would say to make a note of is that they are so busy, if you are not sure exactly what you want then make sure to book an appointment that is longer than an hour, otherwise you might get booted for the next client.
