1537 Pearl StUrban Pearl is excellent. Great atmosphere, great service. I'd walked by Urban Pearl several times before hearing that they donate hair cuts to clients at an at risk youth shelter. Any Boulder business willing to donate services or goods to non-profits is always going to get at least a check-out from me. And Urban Pearl was a sweet find. Annie squeezed me in for a cut on a Friday afternoon, and did a fantastic job. I went in thinking I wanted a trim and walked out with a hairstyle that I really love. The music's great, the coffee is excellent, I can't say enough good things about Urban Pearl.
Strolling down Pearl Street suddenly attacked by a need for a snip. What??!! Oh my! There is a salon right here, next to one of my favorite eating locations. Who new?! And what???!!! There is art on the walls and a scheduled poetry reading in the basement? Who? When? Just recently? Great! And holy toletoe there is Amy, the girl that used to cut my hair at that other salon and then they told me she moved far far away...SWEET!
So, yes...go. Go now. But please, when I come back to town from Texas for the week, be sure that I can get on the books because I gots to get it done right!
And to the papa with the daughter...are you sure she didn't ask for purple? I would have...

Do Not Go Here!!!!
My daughter went here and Rigpa turned her hair jet black with bright purple stripes. My daughter asked for dark brown hair with subtle auburn highlights. When I contacted the salon, the owner was unbelievably rude and nasty and hung up on me. When I spoke to Rigpa herself, she too was defensive, rude and obscene. We unfortunately spent over $150 for this travesty. Only consider going to this "salon" if you want your hair totally ruined!

Unfortunately I was only able to go here three times before moving out of the area. I went from shoulder length hair to graduated bob and Rigpa did such an awesome job!!!
She taught me how to style it myself and we had great conversation. I also got my eyebrows waxed here and they did a terrific job.
Most of all i loved the atmosphere. Laid back, funky, cool and the cutest great dane in the whole world. Its worth the money (~$45 cut) just to chill out with some cool people for a couple hours.

I just had my first cut & color there. After having bad experiences with a lot of places in Boulder, I have finally found a place that meets my expectations. My stylist was Ann and she is AMAZING! She took a good 15-20 minutes to chat with me about color and cut options that she felt would fit my needs. The result is amazing cut and color.
I also like the fact that this is truly a funky and fun salon. Many places claim to be that (hi there FIX) but really aren't anything special. This place has the fun vibe with out being hyper. I'm all about hyper, but not when I'm getting a coif. I loved the music choices!
Thanks yelpers for helping me find this hidden jewel...I will definitely be a repeat customer with Ann @ Urban Pearl!

I've been looing for a place to get a decent cut. Been tired of that 'super-cuts' style if you know what I mean, while it may be cheaper - when it comes to hair I'm willing to $pend, splurge - it's all about style! After all, why not invest in something that has to be perfect b/c everyone else will know if it isn't. You can't hide a bad hairdo. If it can't be fixed with another haircut, you get stuck with it for days/weeks on end!
Now, I've been trying to grow my hair a bit longer, but since my last haircut more than a month ago I've been starting to look a bit shaggy. My burns were gettin outta control! Searching for a salon that has been tried and tested I found Urban Pearl, and like Amanda T., the same hairstylist did my hair and I highly recommend her too! I opted for the wash/cut, I told Ann the look I was going for and she knew exactly what I meant. And the service wasn't rushed at all - she took the time to snip, trim, and buzz my hair and now I can officially state that I look like a groomed man should. Pretty chill atmosphere (I concur with George S. on that), laid back and definetely trendy decor that makes you feel relaxed. I think I just found me my stylist.

So, uh..I have this secret: I've been cutting my own hair for the last year or so....usually done when I think it is a good idea (i.e. beer number 3). Anyway, as you can probably see from my pictures...this gives me a sort of scraggly look....which in all honesty I don't mind.
But then my mom comes to town and simply said, that shit just ain't going to fly anymore son.
Needless to say, we were walking along Pearl, saw this salon, and I was swiftly brought in to once again look like a respectable young person. Little did she know that I planned on keeping my longish hair....haha!
Anyway, a tattooed dude named Jacob sat me down, did the whole shampoo thing, and meticulously trimmed my hair to make it look even (something my inebriated scissors were not doing correctly. Look, scissors, I've already told you several times that I think you have a problem...I mean for Christs-sakes, you are an inanimate object!). All this was done with the buzz of the tattoo gun working in the back (separate tattoo parlor located in the back) and the subject of tattoos on our lips. The music was typical hair-salon music...they played a techno song I know well and love. (Yes I like techno, what. you want to take it outside bub?)
The total was $35 for a job well done. It was worth it (or at least my mom and girlfriend think so...me personally, well I don't look at my hair all time now do I), and I think I will be going back.

One of Boulder's hippest little joints, Urban Pearl Salon and Spa is actually a cultural epicenter masquerading as a salon.
Yes, you can get a hipster haircut here, but they also have a top-notch tattoo parlor in the back--Rising Tide--and an art gallery consisting of the basement and the salon. They've got quality stuff here, and I suggest making this a regular stop on your First Friday art tour.
In the past they have even had events, like movies, in the basement space. I would love to see more.
