As an eyelash artist, seeing 20/20 is paramount to my work. I have to see those tiny lashes in perfect vision to do what I do. Thus, having an optometrist that is top-notch in service and selection is very important to me. Dr Klein and his staff at Urban Optiks exceeded my expectations.
Dr. Klein is thorough, efficient, and has all this really amazing high-tech equipment, moreso than the 10+ other optometrists I've been to in the past 23 years. He quickly resolved an issue I was having with my current contact lenses with a new type of lens and a new cleaning solution.
Holly the optician there is such a wonderful person to work with. Not only does she have the know-how about all the lens options and what will work with my very high prescription, she also has a great sense of style. Her unique eye for a great frame can help those that are a little indecisive or lost in the fantastic selection of very fashionable frames they have there.
This is NOT your run-of-the-mill optometrist inside of Wallmart or Costco kind of experience. All your needs will be taken care of quickly, efficiently, and at a very reasonable cost. Go to Urban Optiks, you'll be glad you did. -

Beautiful trendy clean shop. Awesome technology. VERY friendly doctor and staff.
I only went for a contact fitting and contacts but the prices seemed rather reasonable for being a boutique eye doctor.
I loved it and will definitely recommend it to others. -

After going through several different optometry offices before coming to Urban Optiks I was becoming disillusioned with the whole process. The other offices either did not listen to me about how the lenses worked, or gave me grief about very valid product defects -- like not being able to read a book with my new glasses. I always felt that the glasses I wound up with didn't correct my vision as well as possible. Also, the frame choices were routine and boring.
When I got to Urban Optiks they were friendly, fun and informative. They worked really hard to let me try different frames and didn't apply pressure to pick one or any of them. When I did pick one then then really went over the options I had in picking the configuration of the lenses so that I felt I was making a very informed decision. The glasses and lenses have exceeded my expectations. It's now been over six months and I'm still happy with the service and product I got at Urban Optiks. The one time I had to go in for a frame adjustment they treated my like an old friend and went out of their way to help even though I clearly wasn't buying anything.
I must also say that I've never gotten compliments about my glasses before and with these I get compliments regularly. -

My friends and I love the selection at Urban Optiks! They have a wonderful selection of frames and some which are hard to find. They also accept vsp insurance. Dr. Klein has a really relaxing demeanor during the eye exam and you're immediately at ease. I've been going here for a couple of years now nd I'm never disappointed. They also have a wide selection of frames for folks who have a small bridge. I came to Urban Optiks based on a recommendation from a friend and now, I recommend this place to others. They have a "boutique" atmosphere and you're encouraged to shop. I'm currently obsessed with the Gold and Wood frames-they are beautiful. You'll find this place right on Park and between Robinson and University avenue. Parking is limited on the street, at times, so be prepared to bring change for the meters.

Today was called "Small Day" in the news media - you know, frequent your local businesses instead of the typical big box and department stores. So I thought I'd give Urban Optiks a try. Word of advice - skip this place! I only spoke to one female employee and was utterly shocked at the lack of customer service. I was prepared to drop quite a bit of money on an eye exam, frames, and a years supply of contacts but I will drop that money at a place where I'm treated kindly and with respect!

You will realize that this is no ordinary optometrist the moment you walk into the store. You'll see that this is a doctor who cares about the experience of his patients reflected in the sleek architectural space, bountiful natural light and quirky details. Gone are the days of dreary, florescent lighting, old carpets and overall drab medical suites.
Now, a comfortable space for an optometrist is great and all, but what's more impressive (and important) is the high-tech and top-notch quality of Dr. Klein's eye examinations. Both my husband and I received the best and most accurate eye prescription that we've ever had -- and we're both long glass and contact wearers.
The customer service is also top-notch. Dr. Klein has a small but stellar staff. Everyone is personable and extremely knowledgeable. Never a bad experience.
I opted to use the frames that I already had, but there is a great selection of unique frames. There is a price for this uniqueness, but their stuff is worth it for someone looking for that special "look". The good thing is that they work with all insurance plans.
Be aware that they close the shop for lunch mid-afternoon. Today is was 1-2pm, but I'd check to see if that changes. -

I liked everything about my visit here. Everyone was very friendly. It wasn't like previous eye exams I've had in certain aspects; the technology was better and everything seemed to move faster. Each machine was explained to me and I got a sweet pic of the back of my eyes. As soon as I entered I was offered coffee, tea, etc. Love that!
-The eye exam was good
-I didn't get glasses so I cannot comment on the quality of the frames, however there was a variety of styles in stock
-Beautiful and comfortable office at a convenient location
-Contacts prescription very accurate.
-Insurance options explained carefully to me
Definitely check this place out, going to the eye doctor is one of the more menial experiences in life but this place takes it up a notch. -

Meh. I've experienced better.
This place does have a broad selection of distinct frames. Kristy made a point of mentioning that they will order frames for patients simply so they may try them on -- with no obligation to buy. So, two very solid stars and good reasons to go there if you're not me.
I didn't get my frames at Urban Optiks, so I can't comment on where it all goes from there.
I can say I was hugely turned off by the fact that, while I was browsing, Kristy and the doctor were in the middle of the shop pettily criticizing the holiday decorations of another local eye doctor. I can also say that absolutely influenced my decision to head to another provider for frames which I could have gotten at Urban Optiks more conveniently and for the same price.
Style =/= class. -
Review from Danny W.
Without glasses or contacts I can see about as well as Stevie Wonder in a bear hug from Shaq so after losing m y travel kit with all my backups it was time to head to the doc. I pretty much hate going to all doctors, but this was a must for me unless I wanted to shop for a seeing-eye dog instead.
Eye care has never really been a strength of mine. If I were to have told Dr. Klein how often I really changed my contacts he probably would have had a nervous breakdown, but he was really informative and stressed how important it is for me to make sure I'm switching them out on the reg.
The exam he gave was quick and done without even having to dialate my eyes so I was free to head back to my computer for more yelping as soon as we were finished. Either doctor Klein is really good or the people who gave me my previous exam sucked hard-core cuz we found out that I had been wearing the wrong prescription for about the last two years. Thanks to this checkup I now see better than I have in quite some time. He was also really informative about the possibility of lasik and even referred me to some specialists. I'm not quite ready for lasers to my peepers so I just went with contacts and glasses instead.
The optician (who's name I forget) was very helpful in explaining what my insurance was going to cover and also assisting in finding some frames. Even though the selection they had on hand in their store seemed a tad small she was able to find me a pair that I was happy with.
A week later and I'm back in business with a 6 month supply of lenses, and some new glasses after a couple year hiatus. They're kind of Clark Kent-ish so if you don't recognize me at first, don't worry I'm still super! And best of all...now I can see! -

They have some great, funky frames.
BUT -
1) The glasses prescription they wrote me is only for a year - usually they are for two. This means I have to spend more money on another exam.
2) During the exam, when I asked the optometrist about the different tests he was doing out of curiosity he said, "You don't need to know." Um... thanks.
3) I got frameless glasses which were super thick - they had NOT warned me. When I took them to lenscrafters looking for new frames recently, they said they always recommend against frameless glasses for someone with my prescription for that very reason.
Save some money and go to Lenscrafters instead. -

Okay...so the Doctor is absolutely incredible. I'm out of the state on vacay and I lose my contact, which sucks because I am literally legally blind without my lenses. I call the office to see if they can mail me a new one, but they're closed. I leave a message on the machine expecting a call back the next day.
15 minutes late, I'm pleasantly surprised with a call from the doctor himself, who not only says he can mail me a contact, but that he'll have the manufacturer overnight to me it directly. He even asked how my vacay was going!! IN-FREAKING-CREDIBLE!!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Not only is the office beautiful and inviting, but everyone who works there is so helpful. They do not force glasses on you, but instead offer options so you don't feel pressured. They also help you save money by using your insurance to save the most money possible. And the selection of glasses is vast.

Urban Optiks is my absolute favorite optometry boutique - and I don't even live in San Diego! Every Fall I take a trip to the West Coast from Austin, TX and I wait until then to purchase new glasses. Right now, I'm eagerly anticipating a new pair of nerdy-chic frames which Holly helped me select recently. (Liz Lemon, you've got competition coming!) Next year, I think my goal will be prescription sunglasses, an addition I've been needing for a while.
But, enough about me. Dr. Klein is attentive, friendly, knowledgeable and, most importantly, provides an excellent prescription. And, his opticians (Holly and Kristy) have endless patience as they assist in selecting the perfect frame, based on face shape and individual style. As a result, I'm always receiving compliments on my glasses! Plus, while this shop carries gorgeous high-end frames (hand picked by Holly and Kristy), there are many reasonable options and I know they will help me find the one that's right for me, no matter my budget. Thanks to this gem, I now have a veritable collection of frames, each one unique and perfectly suited to my face and style.
And, did I mention their space is stunning?! Light and airy, with beautiful artwork - every time I visit, I just want to hang out there for hours.
Each time I go to Urban Optiks, I leave feeling more informed and more fashionable. Now, if only I could transplant them to Austin, I'd be set! -

In the Architecture world, we have a term to describe good design that stands out, brings aesthetic delight to the viewer, design that looks good without need of verbal explanation.
It Pops!
This is how I would describe my experience at Urban Optiks Optometry.
I use this term not just because the office was very pleasing from a designer's perspective, nor is it simply due to the fact that I have never seen such a unique and attractive selection of designer eyewear under one roof.
Maybe it was in the amount of detail Dr. Gary Klein took while doing his exam or the state-of-the-art technology he facilitates.
Or maybe it was the confidence and innovation of his optician, Kristy Cambone, when she assisted me in finding the most appropriate pair of specs to fit my lifestyle - whether I'm at a business meeting in New York, a night club in Seattle, or sipping a Corona on the beach half naked in San Diego. There was nothing stodgy or faddish about the choices presented.
Rather, I would say that the entire experience as a whole, just like the many components that come together to create a good design, is what makes the experience at Urban Optiks stand out so far from the rest.

I found Dr. Klein though my insurance company...
The office is BRAND new, all new equipment, great setup. They're in the bottom of those Eqyptian condo's on the corner of University & Park.
Dr. Klein makes you feel really comfortable. I've been wearing contacts since I was 12 years old & this is BY FAR the best place I've been to. He gave me tons of contact lens solution. I accidentally told him I was using a different brand of lens so he gave me a newer spiffy silicone version of a lens to try...because of my error they were bugging me & he gladly gave me a different brand to try the next week.
He has a great selection of glasses as well. Give them a try!! -

I was looking for a new Optometrist and having VSP insurance there are tons of offices to sift through. I though it would be best to check out Yelp for reviews along w/ offices that accept VSP.
I came across Urban Optiks and of course the name is what first attracted me to check out there website. I also had taken the advice of other Yelpers. When I called I was able to make an appointment the next day and my glasses were finished in 8 days!!
Dr. Klein was very thorough and cares about the future of your eyesight. I really like there atmosphere and artwork that is displayed. You'll get great service with a friendly staff! -

Fabulous. Incredible selection of frames - some very high end and some moderately priced. If you want 4-Eyes or Costco quality, price and service (meaning poor or bad) then do not come to Dr. Klein, Holly and Kristy They are all great, the place is new, decorated well and all the equipment is new.
Ok so enough about that, they are so professional, make you feel very comfortable as their attitudes and the 'air' in the shop are those of relazation and calmnes. Not only do I have full condfidence in them, they have some rad frames (as I mentioned above) that are not to badly priced for what they are.

What a unique office! This is by far the most tastefully designed Eye Docs office I have ever been to. I have worn glasses to read only for a REALLY long time! I never thought I would be a good candidate for contacts. Besides only needing the nearvision corrected my eyes are dry. Dr Klein fit me with the most comfortable contacts that allow me to see near AND far. He's the best! And Kristy, his Optician is so knowledgeable and helpful! She's awesome! They have a great selection of beautiful frames too...brands that you dont see in the average office. These are caring professional people that know what theyre doing! GREAT experience!

I go to the Optometrist every couple years to get my eyes checked and to get new reading glasses. I have always had low expectstions for Optometrist shops in the past. And most have been disappointing. But this was a 5-star experience. This was the first one I can honetslty say was great clean modern office. Dr. Gary Klein took me through my exam explaining everything as he went. I learned so much about my eyes and my vision heatlh. He is just great and makes you feel like an important customer. They had a great stylish selection of frames.... a little pricey but they can work with your budget. In any case I would REALLY recommend them to anyone who wants an eye exam or new glasses.

***Update 04/19/10 in response to business comments pertaining to my review***
I read the canned answer from Dr. Klein. What Urban Optiks is still missing is the fact that as a consumer I also care greatly about service and treatment, not just price. They tried to summarize my experience as only being concerned with a discount against their "contractually obligated" agreements.
After I expressed my final concerns to the establishment via an email to Kristy, I didn't receive a response, or a phone call focusing on the service aspect of trying to retain my potential business. It's one thing to say that you strive to treat all customers, current and potential, with high quality service, but it is another to provide it. At the time I initially shopped at Urban Optiks, I was open to purchasing from any establishment that provided great products *and* service.
As I mentioned in my review, including an excerpt from one of Urban Optiks' earlier e-mail responses to me, I didn't appreciate being categorized as only caring about price, and not also service. As a consumer in today's economy that values service, and competitive pricing, I did not have a great experience with Urban Optiks. In fact, what sold me from another local retailer that I posed the same scenarios too, was the excellent customer service and treatment that I was provided with. I just wanted to set the record straight.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Great, high-tech office makes the most use of it. I was in and out in no time and the doc still did a comprehensive enough exam to sit me down and explain the photo he took of the inside of my eye. UOO is definitely my new eye place.

Dr. Klein is wonderful. He takes the time to thoroughly examine all aspects of your eye's health and explains everything to you in plain English, the way it should be! I felt very comfortable working with Dr. Klein and will definitely return. This place is completely open, however, so just keep in mind if you're someone that likes your privacy, you won't have it here, but that's not an issue for me, and actually the open feel of the place makes you more comfortable and you don't even feel like you're at a doctor's office! :) They accept VSP, which is the only eye insurance I've ever had in the past 4 companies I work for, so I'm guessing pretty much every optometrist does, the exam was only $10 bucks which was my copay.

I went here today and absolutely love this place. The doctor was great and so were his staff members Holly and Kristy. It was very clean and professional. Dr. Klein really knows his stuff and is very personable. All of their optometry equipment is up to speed with technology. They also have a wide variety of glasses, which I liked. I really enjoyed my experience here and would totally go here again!

Gary is the best eye doctor I have been to in my life!! I will certainly go back for any and all of my eye care in the future. Gary is a great guy to talk to and he explains everything so clearly. He will not let you out of his office if you do not completely understand what he is talking about. He takes his time and does not rush you by any means. His number one objective is to ensure you can see as clearly as possible. I will be back to see him time and time again.

Dr. Klein is great! His office is modern and high-tech. I've been having problems with my contact lenses, and he fitted me to find a brand that works well for me. This is the first time in over a year that I have comfortable contacts. I also like that, with his high-tech equipment, he can examine my eyes without dilating them. I give my highest recommendation!

Great location right outside the crazy parking area of Hillcrest. They were able to get us in on very short notice on a Saturday. Friendly and welcoming staff made me feel right at home as soon as I walked in. The office has a relaxed and colorful atmosphere complete with big comfy chairs and unique post-industrial decor. There's lots to look at.
Dr. Klein got me into a very comfortable set of contacts and I can see better than ever now. I'm happy to say I have a regular optometrist now. -

Absolutely no frames for less than fifty dollars OVER what my insurance covered. The prescription was so bad I have gone back to my over-the-counter glasses until I can get an exam somewhere else. The people were nice, though.

I can't tell you how happy I am with my new frames. They weren't cheap but after all, this is my face we're talking about. Eyes are the window to your soul and if you need to wear glasses you have consider that when chosing them.
Honestly, I wasn't even in the market for new glasses. I came in to pick up my husband, saw these frames which arrived that day and hadn't even been put on the shelf yet and I couldn't stop thinking about them. I love them!
When I came back to pick them up, there were other new frames on the shelf that made me think perhaps I need two pairs. The selection is amazing and ever changing.
Holly and Kristi are fabulous at fitting you with right frames for your face. Very cool styles and materials...New York, San Francisco, European cool. The ones I chose are made of bone and ebony and made in Paris. Sorry, you're not going to find that at LensCrafters and Costco.
Dr. Klein uses state-of-the-art technology and gave me an eye exam without using drops...no down time afterwards. I recently had another exam with my former optometrist and was told that my eyes were stable and no new prescription was necessary. Dr. Klein's exam proved differently...not by much but my vision has improved with this prescription.
If you value your eyes and want everyone who looks at you to see you at your best with some amazing artistic glasses then this place is the place in San Diego. -

I had the best experience with my office visit her and even better I am in the best pair of contact lenses I have ever worn in the last 16 years.
Kristy and Holly are wonderful and I really enjoy being greeted as if I was there every week.
Dr. Klien is fantastic, he takes his time to explain things to you that I've asked before and no one has ever been able to explain to me. The office is in a great location and beautifully decorated so you don't feel like you're in a medical office; the equipment is really new and the selection of frames is really unique. -

I highly recommend this place to everyone. The office is beautiful, trendy, relaxed and professional. Dr. Klein was extremely helpful and caring and really took the time to get my prescription just right. He has state of the art equipment so you know you are getting the best quality care. The selection of frames is probably better than any other optometrist I've ever been too. You won't go wrong by coming to this office!

ANOTHER review you ask?! Yes...another review.
I felt compelled because I recently went into Urban Optiks for my annual check-up and was once again, amazed.
If you are still on the fence about this place, please quickly hop off and walk in. Dr. Klein is fantastic and absolutely wonderful. He looks you in the eyes when you talk to him, he stops what he's doing to listen to your crazy story about your Gold Reflective Aviators that were made for you...in a word, he CARES.
Kristy knows more about glasses than Benjamin Franklin...who INVENTED them! She'll take into account your price range (mine being 'poor') and looks for ways to get YOU the best deal. What more could you ask for?!
Like I said in my previous review, the place just feels like home. If you're looking for a new Optometrist, PLEASE give Urban Optiks a try, I promise that at the very least, you will feel the most "human" you've ever felt in any doctor's office.

Review from Grace E.
Irvine, CA
I've been a Yelp lurker for some time and just experienced the WORST service I've ever had in my LIFE which compelled me to write this review pronto. If I can help at least one person avoid the treatment I just received, then this is time well-spent.
I visited Urban Optiks earlier this year after seeing positive reviews here. They do have a very cool set-up with chic, modern decor. I dealt with Kristy and was impressed with their attitude of being "anti-big optical shops". I couldn't agree more & deliberately try to choose privately owned smaller shops that have more "style & substance".
Long story short, I ended up buying a pair of frames & for several reasons, didn't get around to bringing in my new prescription for over 6 months. About a month before I stopped in, I called to check on my frames (paid for) & got my first taste of what was to come. At first, I was told that they had been sold or sent back because I'd never come in for them, but this mix-up was eventually cleared up & I was assured that they would be there whenever I came in, no rush at all. Whew!
So, I came in with my prescription today & Kristy was busy with another customer. I perused the frames, waiting for my turn. Dr. Klein came out & asked how he could help me & I explained I had a frame waiting & gave him the print out of my prescription. A few minutes later, he tells me there are no frames on hold for me & am I sure they weren't sent back since I never came to pay for them. At this point, I'm reminded of my phone call just a short month earlier & can't believe how a small outfit can make such a glaring mistake over & over. Needless to say, I'm frustrated -- and granted, can't hide it very well at this point. In reaction to my obvious frustration, Dr. Klein tells me that he "doesn't like my attitude" and that I should "sit down and relax and calm down" while I wait for Kristy to help me. I say that I would prefer to keep looking at frames while I wait to which he proceeds to reach over & shut the door of the case of frames I'm standing in front of so that I can't look anymore.
By this point, I'm gob-smacked that I've been told I have a bad attitude when my frames (paid for) have been "lost" not once, but twice. Affronted, I'm literally standing there in shock and reduced to tears by the complete lack of professionalism. For what it's worth, Kristy acknowledged my frustration, however, said I shouldn't expect Dr. Klein to know where everything is, since it's not his job.
Well, then, why did Dr. Klein offer to help me in the first place? If he's not in the position to help anyone or know where anything is, then he should avoid client interaction to begin with. Or, at the very least, not insult them when frames (paid for) have gone missing.
In the end, I requested a refund and I can report that they did give me that for which I'm extremely grateful -- mainly, because I don't have to come back! However, they could not help me with a recco of where else I could find the frame nor recco a place that could fit lenses if I took the frame elsewhere. (I really wanted those frames!!!)
Net - if you're looking for professional & courteous service, I suggest you BEWARE of this place & consider other options - it's just not worth it to be belittled when you've already paid for something. IMHO, the modern decor & trendy selection of frames only disguise the potentially insulting and disorganized service you could experience if you say/do something that qualifies as not meeting expectations of the "right" attitude for them.
The true test of professional service is how a problem is handled & in this case, what could've easily been smoothed over, instead escalated to a heated confrontation triggered by unnecessary negative gestures toward me. Judge for yourself by the situation above, but, frankly, IMHO there's little value of the customer's happiness/satisfaction here.
I typically buy 3 pairs of glasses a year and none from the big optical shops, always smaller, hipper, places. Having worn glasses for over 30 years now, I have NEVER NEVER NEVER been treated with such disrespect (I mean, really, how many doctors have gotten snippy with YOU when they've just told you they can't find frames you've paid for), nor been told that my attitude is bad when I have good reason to be frustrated by the circumstances outlined above.
And now, time to find some new glasses (somewhere else!).....thx -

Yes they are very nice..however there was some sort of snafu...Not only did I get the wrong script for my glasses but my contacts as well. I opted to have my glasses made elsewhere because I did not find frames that really fit me. I had to have a a second eye exam from another Optometrist because the glasses I had made came out wrong and they were made directly from the script I had. I also had ordered the first 2 boxes of contacts from Urban and than ordered several boxes later from a mass retailer . However when the 2nd doctor I went to saw the whole script they asked me why I was wearing this strength or contacts because this was going to give me issues because they were too strong. Now I know why I was getting head aches. Yes they are nice however I got the script from this office twice and It concerns me that this script was wrong for both glasses and contacts. Yes mistakes happen but I have never had that much of an error with contacts or glasses. As far as selection is concerned the glasses there are different and on the pricey side. I saw a few frames that looked interesting but were just a little too funky for me. I don't really know that I would recommend anyone because I cant understand how such a mistake could happen 2 times but this could be isolated.

If you are looking for personal service in eye care--and not a puppy mill where the doctor spends 1 minute with you then runs down the hall to the next door as he juggles half a dozen other patients--this is the place to go. Dr. Klein is sweet natured, really knows what he's doing, has all the latest equipment, and works with you till you find the right lenses. I had been struggling with astigmatism for years and didn't even know it--other optometrists had just upped my prescription to the point where I could only see at a distance without dealing with the ghost images and blurriness astigmatism causes. Dr. Klein corrected my sight so that I see near and far perfectly. I am delighted. It's a beautiful office and his staff are caring and competent. I recommend Dr. Klein and Urban Optiks very highly.
