I had a random urge to chop my hair off on a Tuesday and thanks to Yelp I found Urban Lift and Melle!  I called and was lucky enough to get an appointment the very same day.

While the salon is somewhat difficult to spot on this quiet, tree-lined stretch of Ashland, I spotted it and was easily able to find a parking spot nearby.  I was greeted by Emerson when I came in who offered me something to drink (beer and wine were choices!) and showed me to the back to hang out before my appointment time.

Then I met Melle and any worries I had about my spur of the moment haircut were put to rest.  She is sweet, super friendly, and most importantly she is excellent at what she does.  I brought a few pictures in and after taking a look at them and at my hair she knew exactly what to do and after explaining it to me in great detail, she went to work.  She gave me a play by play of what she was cutting and gave me tips on how to shorten my blow drying time and how to style my new 'do.  I couldn't be happier with the finished product, she gave me the exact cut I wanted and more.  Add in 20% off to first time clients and it was by far the best salon experience I've had in the city.  Love Urban Lift, love Melle, love my hair!

If I was to imagine a hair salon that had the most sincere staff, pups lounging in the corners, and kickass hairstyles....it would be called Urban Lift.
Natalie. is. awesome. Enough said...but alas...I will continue.
First off, I have only had my haircut by one person...yes...I came from a small town in Kansas. I was nervous to try someone else out; I turned to yelp for help and they did not let me down.
Emerson took my appointment and her ridiculously awesome attitude had me hooked from the get-go.
When I got to Urban Lift (10 minutes late...beware of cubs games)...she wasn't irritated or rude...quite the opposite...Emerson offered me a beverage and I was promptly seated in Natalie's chair.
Next up...Natalie the rockstar...she is super bubbly, yet very down-to-earth. She was sincerely interested in my job (mountain guide) and I probably chatted her ear off. Now to the hairstyle...LOVE. She got rid of my straight and stringy hair. She gave me a little volume with long layers and cut off the ends. I didn't want it too short, but I also said do whatever you feel (it can grow back). It is perfect. I now refuse to go anywhere else but here!!!
Urban Lift...all around awesome job. Cozy place, amazing staff, cool dogs chilling in the corners...overall...legit.

I have a reasonably diverse experience with hair salons and this is one of my favorites. I got my hair highlighted here.

Walk in, Emerson greets you at the door and makes you feel welcomed, relaxed, at home, shows you where you can get something to drink. The shop is basically a house, turned salon, with Cooper, the big laid back white pup lounging in the corner. It's small enough that they know who is coming, when, and identify you by name as you walk in the door, but the hair dressers don't overbook and you don't spend a lot of time waiting before or during the process.

Lyndzie listened to what I was describing and asking for before doing anything. She asked questions, played with my hair, described her ideas, asked me for feedback.  I felt very comfortable about what we were going to do before she did it. She didn't force me into meaningless small talk but conversation naturally ensued because the people and the clients there are all relaxed and familiar with each other.

During waiting periods, there are lots of magazines; you can do your nails while you wait; lounge on the couch; walk around the shop, talk with Joe, the hilarious owner.

When Lyndzie finished, my hair looked excellent. She did exactly what we talked about and I am incredibly happy with the outcome. There was 20% off of the first visit, so I paid $112 for a half-head of highlights (plus a tip).

I will absolutely be going back and I recommend this place with confidence.

I was waiting a week to write the review because I know in the past I've had initial reactions but they don't always hold true a few washes later!

I loved the hair cut Melle gave me! I loved the place, the atmosphere, everything! The first thing that stood out to me is how deep a relationship all the hairdressers shared with their clients! They were chatting with them during the shampoo as if they have weekly GNOs to catch up on lives!

The service was great and while I had a small wait, I got the opportunity to paint my nails and enjoy a beer!

Coming to my own haircut - I had really wanted something different after wearing my hair long and straight for a while now. Every time I told a hairdresser I wanted to cut my hair short, they'd be a little scared and say well let's start with a few inches and next time you come, we can do a few more. Melle was adventurous and brave and took a good 7inches off and still made my hair look good!

The other thing I was super-impressed with was that she didn't need to blow-dry my hair into a fancy style for it to look good initially and wear off after a wash - my hair cut actually looked good and in fact, she was patient in teaching me how to achieve that look too!

I actually had a very positive experience and am still getting used to my shorter hair, but enjoying the actual hair cut (and while won't cut short again, am glad I did it and did it right with Melle).

Like some of the other reviewers I moved to Chicago recently and needed a new salon. After doing my research I settled on Urban Lift Hair Salon and met with Lynzie. She did a great job and was very cool. She explained everything she was doing and had an opinion, but cared about yours too which is always good. Unfortunately the dogs were not there when I went so I did not see them :(.

To all the guys out there: If you are still going to hair cuttery, great clips, etc. STOP. A salon cut is the way to go. I remember when I made the change a few years ago and it makes a world of difference. Stop clipping the coupons and sitting in the waiting room with the screaming babies.

Oh and any place that offers a PBR or a glass of wine before a haircut is great in my book. I will be back for sure!

I really believe I have a phobia about getting a haircut simply because I have had so many bad ones. So I jumped on yelp to help me find a place, and decided this place was the winner and deserved a shot. I called up for the first available appointment with whomever I could get, and thankfully for me I got an appointment with Lynzie. I have been in 3 times since and every time I go I get the best cuts I have ever had in my life. I kid you not, I have never liked getting a hair cut until now. Not just anyone can cut wavy thick hair like mine, but she does with amazing precision everytime. I've literally had my mind blown and now love the opportunity to go in and see her. Thank you Lynzie for making getting a haircut a treat and not another horrible experience.

I came to Chicago from Boston with a jaded attitude and red hair. After a few months of being in the midwest, I decided it was time for me to go back to blonde, my natural hair color. After scouring Yelp reviews, Urban Lift won me over for proximity to my apartment and the offering of PRB and wine.

Lyndzi (sorry if I spelled it incorrectly!) is my hairstylist and she has just done an amazing job of slowly easing my overprocessed hair from short, short red to shoulder length and its natural, dark blonde. Hanging out at Urban Lift is like hanging out with old friends; it's comfortable, inviting and friendly. And, the owner's two ADORABLE dogs are always on hand to give me my puppy dog fix.

Everyone always leaves looking relaxed, happy and gorgeous. And that is, after all, what getting your hair done is all about right? Feeling gorgeous and comfortable with your style. This place does that for you, plus...did I mention the PBR and wine?

Once again, I have to say that UL is the absolute best.  Just got an awesome hair cut from Lynzie.  I have curly/wavy hair and she did an amazing job.  She knows how to make the most of your natural waves and even instructs you on how to easily style at home.  I now have a no-fuss 'do that looks amazing.  And Melle gave me gorgeous highlights to compliment my new style.  Thanks UL!

So...a little background. I'm a little stylist-phobic. One woman cut and colored my hair from ages five to twenty...and I only realized at age twenty that she really, really sucked at it. I also realized at that point that I'd been living in LA for two years and going home to Podunk Central on college breaks to get my hair cut. Make sense? Not so much.

Anyway, a marvelous tattooed hipster woman named Jill cut my hair in LA for two years, and I followed her through three salons (if anyone's LA-bound, go see her or anyone else at Sugar-- fabulous!).  She revolutionized my straight-out-of-the-1970s center-part look and gave me a haircut I loved so much that I kept it for almost four years.

A year ago, I moved to New York and got a promotional haircut at a new salon. I kept the same shape Jill had given me, including the bangs, but chopped off about seven inches. And...that was my last haircut. A YEAR AGO. Frantic self-trimming of bangs aside (and MAN was THAT a bad choice...), that's been it.

I moved to Chicago in August, and by about November, everyone from my mom to my girlfriend to my (straight guy) roommate was hinting that I should maaaaaaybe think about a trim. Cue a long search on Yelp and my final settling on Urban Lift.

On Sunday, I called to ask if they had any openings (with any stylist) on Tuesday. I got a call Tuesday morning asking if I could come in at 5:15-- YES! I got there about ten minutes early and was checked in by (very hip) Emerson, who offered me and my girlfriend beverages. The salon itself is great-- not too cool for school. I'd feel comfortable recommending it to anyone, from my hopelessly hip friends to my couldn't-be-squarer mom. The muppet-like, incredibly calm dogs submitted to my cooing, and then Lynzie took me right away.

Another thing: I'm hopeless with hair. Describing what I want, styling, even the most basic things like braiding...I suck. I told Lynzie I wanted a new look, but didn't want to lose too much length, I still wanted bangs, and I didn't do much beyond a daily blow-dry-- and please, minimal products. The result is great! Lynzie listened to everything I said-- and there was no sales pitch on any products because she DIDN'T USE ANY. That means I have a halfway decent chance of replicating this new haircut on my own!

First-time discount of 20% was a nice touch. I won't pretend the place is cheap, but it's on par with what I was paying in LA, so I won't complain.

Free bang trims, so I'll be back in two weeks, and then I'll be paying another visit in a couple of months. :-)

Edit: Forgot to say that Lynzie also explained everything she was doing, step by step (like, teaching me how to use the round brush because I'm a clueless idiot) and that conversation was easy and not forced.

I haven't been to a salon since my mother used to drag me to hers, years ago.  I transitioned to old Italian barbers, and then Supercuts mostly for the prices and convenience of location.  I'm not really a fussy guy, I want something quick but done properly. Well, I decided it was time to have some style added to my head, so I yelped the local salons, found one with a few male reviews and took a shot.

Its like anything else, the hardest part is always walking in the door, and even that was easy. Urban Lift has actually taken steps to make the aesthetics gender neutral, so you're not overwhelmed with excessively feminine colors and presentation.  It's clean, neat, and warm.  I was greeted immediately by a friendly receptionist and led to the comfy waiting room where I was even offered a drink, which may be common to folks who visit these sorts of places often, but not me.

I had an appointment with Lynzie who had me in the chair on time, and helped me vocalize what I wanted done.  Again, I'm used to "#2 on the back and sides, you know, and that thing with the top;" I'm not good at expressing what I want.  She understood and not only executed well, but also was able to explain WHY she was, say, making the a bit shorter than the top, or other "structural" things.  I don't know if that's the proper language, but its clear she took pride in what she was doing, understood WHY she was doing it, and had fun at the same time.  She spoke about how the salon owner flew out to the American Crew men's hair training classes, and that they had followed, and that inspired confidence. She was happy, cheerful, friendly, and sweet, not overly chatty or, well, you know how some hair people can be. She wasn't that, she was awesome.

I left feeling confident and incredibly happy with the way I looked-  I haven't been this satisfied with a hair cut in years.  Everyone in the staff I ran in to was friendly, smiling, and in a great mood.  Any guys looking for to upgrade, I'm definitely recommending to come here.

This review is long overdue.  I've been going here for the past 3 years, and I guess I felt that this place has enough praise as it is.  However, I wanted to give a special praise to the stylist here named Natalie.  She does my hair as well as my girlfriend's hair and does amazing styling, and coloring.  She also has a great personality to go with her awesome hair skills.  I have recommended her to many of my friends.  She always listens, recommends when needed, and will make modifications free of charge if you don't like your cut after a few days.

    Big PROS about this place
    - Waiting Lounge with Coffee, Tea, Beer!!! and comfy couches and magazines
    - Great stylists who also have legit male hair-cutting skills.  Most, if not all of them, are certified by American Crew.
    - Total laid-back and non-pretentious atmosphere.

    CONS
    - They are busy, so you can rarely just walk in and get a cut.
    - Sometimes the dogs hog the couch.  ;)

My haircut is better than yours.

Calm down. I'm not saying you don't look fabulous. You do. Truly. I mean that.

But the simple fact is that my haircut does more stuff than yours.

Oh really? Does your haircut have a toothpick? No? How about a fish scaler? I thought not. Do you have a stubby little pen? A saw? Strike-Anywhere match storage?

Yes, I DO in fact have all those things and more. You see, thanks to John at Urban Lift, I am the proud owner of the Swiss Army Knife of Haircuts.

Ah, the Swiss Army Knife! That pinnacle of engineering and Swiss precision! The reason nobody ever messes with Switzerland has nothing to do with the government's neutrality. The real reason is that it is well known that every solider in the Swiss military is packing one of these knives, and is therefore way more prepared than you. Whatever action a potential invader might try, the Swiss Army Knife has a feature to deal with it.

Think about it. Remember looking at all the different Victorinox knives in the back of the Sears catalog? I dreamed of owning the Ranger that had everything from a magnifying glass on up to a collapsible bow and arrow. I might have made that last one up when I was 8, but one has to admit that a Swiss Army Knife has an awful lot of useful stuff in it.

Then think about this: would the Swiss government defend their borders with a leather awl and a corkscrew? Not likely. Without a doubt, the Top Secret, High Tech, Don't Even Think About It Germany, Military Grade Swiss Army Knives the soldiers are armed with have got shiz that is far beyond my most feverish 8-year-old Sears catalog dreams. Like "high-explosive guided missiles coming out something that is the size of a Plen-T-Pak of gum" sort of technology. You'll notice that Germany has been very well-behaved lately.

Metaphorically speaking, my haircut does that. Several weeks later, I am still discovering new features. It does everything I need and more.

Blend in with the teamsters? My haircut does that.
Headed to the chic winebar? My haircut does that.
Too much bass and overpriced cocktails? My haircut does that.
Joining the yakuza? My haircut does that.
Overdrugged undernourished pop star? My haircut does that.
    Europe? My haircut does that.

Over the years I have never really been happy with the service or my haircut anywhere I went. I tried fancy salons, discount chains, and barber shops but the results were always pretty much the same: I got rushed in and out and my input was totally ignored. While my hair was always successfully shorter, it was a real roll of the dice if I got something that I actually liked, no matter how much money I paid. And in no circumstance did I really ever get something I asked for.

Fortunately, those days are now over. When I sat down with John, no scissors were deployed, and no bib was unfurled. He asked not only what my hair was like now, but what I would like it to be. He asked how I use my hair. He asked what I needed my hair to do.

It was like being in the Victorinox Design Studio. John busted out the image gallery and we started to assemble the blades and features I wanted my new custom Swiss Army Knife to have. It wasn't until we had formulated a plan of action that we got to the washing and cutting.

As an engineer, this makes sense to me:

Design, THEN Build. Too many times have other people started directionlessly scissoring away the moment I sat down.

A certain amount of intuition is good in an artistic profession, but so is precision. John has both qualities in spades. Not only did he nail the look, he was actually measuring my hair lengths during the cut for symmetry. Why? Because he cared enough to not only do it right, but double-check to make sure that it was right. Now that's engineering!

And what shiny, new high-tech gadget would be complete without the User's Manual? John walked me through the process of a few different ways to prep my hair in the morning. I've never gotten that anywhere else before. I suspect that he also knowingly built in a few hidden features that I would delightedly discover later.

I can now be turning heads or operating in stealth mode whenever I choose. I've finally gotten the haircut I had always dreamed about having feature-wise, but never really knew what it looked like. John nailed it on the first try.

Thanks, John, for giving me the haircut that keeps Germany honest!

P.S. Just kidding, Germany! I love you guys! ; )

Natalie saved my wedding photos.  She will always be a lifesaver in my book.

I had a dreadful after work haircut a month ago when it was 80° and I had longer hair, where I wanted it chopped off.  We'll $15 at Haircuttery later I got just that.  It was chopped.  Badly.

So we're two-ish weeks away from wedding day and I need much better and manageable hair!  I met some of the girls at Yelp Around the World a year or so ago.  And then have continuously heard great things, so can't go wrong right?

Natalie listened to me, talked over some things and then just took over.  Explaining everything she was doing and using along the way.  And no snooty atmosphere here, which is what deters me from most salons.  I loathe fake small talk but there was none here!  Natalie has sold me on Urban Lift and I will never cheat with a Haircuttery again.  Especially after she saved my hair and it's on the path to greatness once more!

So go, book it, they rock!

And besides, not only do you get a great hair cut but a beer and dogs to play with to boot!  Loves it!

It's been almost 2 years and Natalie still makes me look (and feel) like a pretty, pretty princess.

We've done everything from "Just a Trim" to a full on "break up hair cut".  And I have loved every cut.  I also trust her with colors and let her do whatever she thinks will look good.

I love the feeling of a swingy new 'do.  It makes me feel like a million bucks.

Where to begin about my love of Urban Lift. I first called to make an appointment after reading all the glowing Yelp reviews and asked to make an appointment with whichever stylist was best with long hair - not just anyone gets to chop my tresses - and was referred to Natalie. Almost 3 years later she and I have gone through various hair colors and styles - each one garnering massive amounts of compliments and subsequent referrals to her service from me. Natalie once cut my bangs in a way that demanded its own nickname so that others could request the cut for themselves - she's that good. The atmosphere is incredibly chillax, complete with wine and beer if you so desire, and will make you feel comfortable, pampered and wanting to return time and time again.

I don't usually review places, unless they are really good or dreadfully awful! This place was of the former category. My stylist was Lynzie who did an AMAZING job with my hair. I had not cut my hair for over a year mainly due to fear of getting a bad haircut which is, let's face it, very common here in the States. When I got in, Lynzie introduced herself and offered me a drink. She then said she had another appointment in 35 minutes (and I must say I was about 10 minutes late), so I could either opt for another date and time or skip the shampoo and have my hair flat-ironed and cut. I wanted an angled bob with a little bit of sass and she said she needed my hair straight to achieve that precise angled cut. I said I'll do the flat-iron (this is why the place lost the one star by the way). Lynzie did not start with the scissors right away. Instead, she asked questions and tried to know my preferences and how I normally wear my hair before she cut. She was very precise and took her time cutting my hair.  She was very pleasant too. My hair is extremely fine and it usually lays flat on my head with short styles. It's sleek and chic now! Thank you Lynzie!

I can't believe after coming here for several years that I haven't reviewed Urban Lift.  Those who know me know that I'm not the "metrosexual" type and not usually the salon "type".  But I love that Urban Lift came highly recommended.  John, the owner, used to cut my hair but I ended up falling in love with Melle one day when John wasn't there to cut (No offense, John!)  =)

Melle talks to me about fun music stuff like Morrissey, The Cure, Death Cab, etc. and even has come to one of my band's shows.  Talk about support!

The reason I like Urban Lift is that it successfully walks the line with "nice salon" but doesn't carry the pretentiousness that many salons do.  There's PBR in the fridge while you wait and red wine for the non-PBR crowd.  You see "uppity" types there; you see more "ruggedy" types like me there.  And I tell ya, I 'm the type that feels very uncomfortable in those "uppity" places where people have daggers in their eyes if you're not swallowing Gucci pills and sucking on a spoon filled with caviar.

Urban Lift delivers great cuts and service in general.  I'm a fan!

I have been to at least 15 salons in Chicago in 6 years since moving here.  The longest I had ever gone to a stylist was three or four times.  That was until I met NATALIE at URBAN LIFT.  It has  been over a year now since I started going to Natalie.   Natalie's talent is rare,  I feel she actually understands the clients vision for what they want to achieve which is a very hard task.   Natalie is also an excellent communicator and doesn't push products which I love!   I get LOT's of compliments on her cuts too!!!!!!!

I just have to add a little more about this very special salon.  I now have been going on two years seeing Natalie which is rare for me and she is just amazing.   What I like about Natalie is that once in a RARE while I will come in and she will say, that she doesn't like the progression of the color between visits.   Once she notices this she totally changes the color and the gloss/pastel  and it is perfect.  I was actually fine with the color before but she strives for perfection and I love her for that.

I also take note of all of the other stylists, John the owner is very in tune to all of his staff and I am always impressed with how amazing his clients look when they leave as well.  The same  goes for Mel and Lyndsey.  I have never been to a salon where pretty much everyone leaves looking like a million bucks.  I am sure they can't make everyone happy but from the looks of it to me they do.  I can't leave out Emerson.  She is their front desk receptionist and it is very apparent she is the go to girl for any assistance the staff of clients need. She does much more than answer the phones and is very friendly and fun.  You guys are awesome!

Ok, so technically I ended up at Urban Lift because I got a flat tire, and kadunka dunked it to Ashland Tire & Auto, about 2 blocks away from the salon. I simply could not justify squandering an entire hour while my hunka junka was getting outfitted with new shoes...

sidenote: I had been getting fiercely close to a full-fledged, raging mullet. It had to go. NOW.

So I strolled down the street, and remembered I had seen/read good things about this place. I popped in and much to my extreme pleasure they were able to fit me in. RIGHT then. John (the owner) explained that I could get a haircut with Natalie and that it would be 30 percent off the regular price (20 percent off for all new clients, an extra 10 because she's a junior stylist). Bonus! I like risks and I like discounts, even when it comes to my mullet.

The salon is this sweet balance of retro/cool/swank without the pretension (zero). The people are friendly, the space is clean and inviting...and like many of mentioned, they give you beer/wine/soda...it's just a cool place, like I want to go hang out again tomorrow. I won't for a few more weeks, but you get the gist....

Well, it just so turns out Natalie is a frickin superstar haircutter. She is adorable (and very young, but did I mention she rocks at cutting hair? she does). She listened EXACTLY to everything I needed/wanted out of my faux mullet, and she whipped it into a normal person's haircut without chopping off the length. Hallelujia! She is awesome...I suggest anyone try her. A haircut (with the 30 percent discount) was $35. HOLY CRAP. I just got a great haircut for $35. Unreal.

Then I headed down the street and signed over my soul (ok, $325 for tires). So, Urban Life was the bright side to this whole doldrum of a day ;) Highly recommended...

    LOVE this place!!!

I just moved to Chicago from MI where my old roommate has been doing my hair for 4 years. So I was scared to find a new hair place or stylist.

I was paired with Lyinzie (sp?) and she was SOOO friendly, as soon as you walk in the door, from the owner to other stylists everyone is friendly and knowledgeable.

Lyinzie informed me that my hair was damaged and needed a deep condition (which I figured cause its been 2 months since a cut)
She told me exactly how everything worked with each product as well as the ingredients and what each one does for my hair and how it helps repair and rebuild the hair and minimize split ends. She went to the Paul Mitchell school so you know she is good!
On top of that she is from MI too so it was nice to relate to someone!

She was friendly and told me about each product that she used on my hair as she was straightening it, and I eventually purchased the deep conditioner that she used on my hair, I will go back for a color in the next month because she was that good! It was the best blow out/flat iron I have EVER had, even better than my beloved roommate!!!

She was great, the salon was great, and I asked if she could braid my hair to the side, the new style that everyone is rocking, and she was honest and said she didn't know how to do it BUT another stylist who had a free moment did know how to do it and came over to french braid a part of my hair, out of her own good will! SO NICE!!! It had a laid back relaxed feel, I liked how in the back they have nail polish set up so you can paint your nails while you wait under the dryer or just wait for your stylist to be ready for you!
They also give you a beverage when you come in!
SO NICE and so good!! I will definitely go back to this salon again!!

At the risk of making it difficult to book an appointment (damn it), here's my five star review for the first consistent salon in Chicago that I LOVE. Urban Lift has saved me from years of throwing thousands (honestly, I don't want to know) down the drain for subpar service at Mario Tricocci.

After bouncing around like a helpless lamb desperate for some much-needed hair love, a friend recommended Urban Lift (likely after being sick of staring at my sick dead ends and horrific roots for so long).

I found Lynzie, and refuse to go anywhere else. She rocks the round brush, gives amazing color advice without you feeling like she's trying to rob your home in front of your very eyes, is great with cuts and is the only person to have ever blown out my Asian-fro hair in a way that doesn't make me look like I'm going to give the 7 o'clock news. Love.

Everyone who works there is welcoming, down to earth, and generally people you'd want to hang out with. More perks? They have a manicure station (with rad, up to date Essie and OPI colors) for when you're waiting for your color to set; offer PBR, wine or really strong coffee and icing on top: the owner has the most chillaxed, adorable dogs.

But seriously, if you bum rush the place and block my way to appointments - I will find you.

    Urban Lift is fantastic!!

I found them on Yelp this morning and Mary fit me in this afternoon. I've been to several different  well known Chicago salons, and have yet to get the results I got today! I showed her a picture and what I got was a thousand times better.  Brunette to beautiful, healthy light blonde in one trip.

Not only were both the cut & color great, but I've never been to a salon that offered me free PBR and celebrated CHIP:30.  I'll take beer and potato chips while i'm getting my hair done anyday!!

By the time I left, I felt like family.  I laughed hysterically for two hours and left with great hair, a full belly, and money left in my pocket!!

Worst haircut I've ever had in my life.

This is my first negative review on Yelp so obviously I don't take these reviews lightly.  One star for the haircut and one star for me because, although I did try this place out based on Yelp recommendations, I did not specifically request any stylist by name. So that was my bad. Let me also say that I am rarely that picky about my hair.  Usually I just want a simple trim. I've had pixie cuts in the past in addition to long hairstyles.  I even cut my own hair for a while.  So you have to REALLY mess up in order to make me upset. Oh, and she did...

I have a feeling the other two star reviewer and I had the same hairdresser.  All I wanted was a trim.  What I got was barely anything cut off the bottom and my entire head thinned out.  I used to have beautiful thick hair.  Now it is as thin as a baby's and easily damaged as a result.

Afterwards, I went to Maxine's on Rush and gladly forked over $70 for an experienced stylist to help me fix the hot mess formally known as my hair.  She told me I had a ton of layers and over texturized hair and, as a result, would either need a pixie cut or to trim 3 inches off now and then again 4 months from now to fix the damage. I decided on the 3 inches now and then again later.

I never called the salon to complain.  Maybe I should have, but I was so upset by the whole thing I just never want to see this place again.  Other than the worst haircut of my life, the people were really nice, the place was clean and cute, they got me in right away, and the prices were reasonable.  But lets face it, if the hairdresser sucks who gives a sh*t about anything else, you know? There's not enough pleases and thank yous in the world to make up for a horrible haircut.

I don't think this place is bad.  I just think they have a very nice, young female there who is a horrible hairdresser.  So if you go, just make sure to use someone that has been recommended by a Yelper.  Don't go to just anyone like I did.

This is salon is great.  If you are new to the city or just looking for a new stylist, I highly recommend this place, especially Mary.  She does my hair and she is great.  I have wicked curly hair and she does an excellent job with it.

The salon is also just fun to hang out in.  The staff is friendly and welcoming--None of that wearing all black, you are not hip enough to look me in the eye stuff.  They offer you a beer, wine, or pop and ask you how your week was.  It's like all the great things about a neighborhood beauty parlor without the cheesy, texas hairdo.

They actually just had a Valentines Day party for their clients on Saturday night, and it was really fun.  Plus I met alot of Mary's other clients, and she does a great job with straight hair too.  She's also really great with color--does a cute job without frying your hair, and is just really fun to sit and talk to.  Really, she's the perfect stylist.

I am now madly in love with Urban Lift.

I's 5:45pm last night, and I have been standing outside waiting for one form or another of transportation for the last hour. It was an awful day at work, my personal life is really a mess, and I am planning to throw on the dark sunglasses and pull up my scarf and completely (and quietly) lose it as soon as I can slouch into the back of a cab. I call Urban Lift on my phone's last gasp of energy and explain I will be late and they are very kind and accomodating. I wander around downtown looking for an elusive empty cab, occasionally blinking back tears of frustration. Finally I catch one going south, and the driver seemingly knows I'm a woman at her breaking point. He kindly lurches his cab into park every time we're delayed in traffic, which is a LOT.

Thirty minutes of traffic - 15 of which are indeed spent silently bawling my ass off behind aforementioned scarf and sunglasses - and $25 later, I'm at Urban Lift. I am hopeful they can still fit me in, but completely understanding if they can't. Thankfully, they can and I'm immediately offered something to drink. I down the glass of red gratefully as Mary starts to work on my hair.

Not only is Mary a fabulous stylist, she's a great listener. I unloaded on that poor girl like there was no tomorrow, and she took it all in stride, even asking questions and giving her own take on things. She didn't push product on me, she advised me the best cut for my lifestyle and my face, and she gave me styling suggestions to use at home. On top of that, I got a 20% discount for being a first-time customer, so I got this great experience for $40 before tip. Bonus!

By the time I left, I felt much better, my hair looked much better, and while I was still ready to kill me some beer upon my return home, I saw a light at the end of a particularly frustrating tunnel, and it was thanks to the folks at Urban Lift.

So after 3 1/2 years of roaming aimlessly around Chicago, looking for an affordable, trustworthy, talented stylist, I believe I am home. THANK YOU MARY and Urban Lift!

EDIT 2/22/08: Went back for a trim from John and I can confirm that he is also a bang-up stylist! Even invited my big dog to the salon late the next night. Sooo loving this place...*happy hair bliss*

Being the non-extremist that I am,... I'm reluctant to give 5 stars to a place that I don't love.

Urban Lift deserves 5 stars. It was a great experience; made by the staff and completed by the laid-back-but-hip-and-cool atmosphere.

I went in yesterday for a trim and some red highlights (to brighten up the Chicago gloominess we've been having). My stylist, Mary, immediately took my coat and offered me something to drink. We discussed shade options, curly hair and life. She was so friendly!

The place is just my style. It isn't sterile. It doesn't feel like people are waiting on you, but you still feel pampered. It's like you're at a friend's house doing your hair,... that is, if your friend has hair equipment and is a stylist.

I am in love with Urban Lift.

I went to another salon (which shall remain nameless) for my first haircut after moving to Chicago and ended up in tears in my bathroom floor that night because I hated it so much.  That has NEVER happened to me before - yeah, I'm known for being a bit of a drama queen, but that was a whole new low for me.  Luckily a friend recommended Urban Lift and I knew as soon as I walked in that it was going to be a much, much better experience.  The place is totally chill, Mary and Marina are super super cool and do an amazing job on my hair and brows.  Plus, who doesn't love a soda/glass of wine/PBR while you get your services done?

If I could give them 6 stars, I would!!  Hooray!

UPDATE: Mary has left the salon.  I still go to get my eyebrows waxed by Marina, though!

Great.  I've lived here in Chicago for six years now, suffering through bad stylists and uncomfortable salon experiences, and 6 months away from moving out of the city, NOW I find Melle at Urban Lift.  I guess better late than never.

She knew exactly what I was talking about with regard to my current hair, gave me good input about what to do with it, taught me how to style it as we went along, and made it look suuuuuper cute.  She was also sweet, smart, and just a blast to chat with as she made it all happen.

I seriously will consider still getting my hair done here, even after I move 2 hours away this summer.  Thanks, Melle!

I have been looking for a new salon as my stylist moved out of state.  I am loyal and easy going with my hair within a few parameters.  I received the worst haircut of my life yesterday at Urban Lift.  My hair is a chopped up mess.  I never write bad reviews, however, the good reviews are what sent me to this salon, so I feel compelled to write this for other people.  I paid for highlights and my friends were laughing through dinner as they counted three of them in my head.  My hair is now forebodingly and frighteningly dark.  With the 20% discount, it was a hefty $132.  I am confused and feel completely ripped off.  I also spent more than three hours there and maybe a little less talking and a little more working would make things more expedient.  Everyone is exceedingly friendly, but in these rough economic times, we all need our money's worth.  What was also frustrating is the stylist continued to tell me how wonderful my hair looked and never asked me if I liked it....It looked absolutely horrid, bordering on ridiculous.  So, in fact, after I have someone competent fix it, I will have spent $300 on this haircut.
I will not be back, sadly...

    Frown Town.

I've been excruciatingly busy at work the last 4 months and literally had not a moment to consider my hair.  I kind of forgot that I had it in the first place.  It was one of those sad periods of pony tails and frantically trimmed bangs over the toilet.  Not good times.

The folks at Urban Lift were kind enough to squeeze me in for a super last minute appointment-- made about 20 minutes before the actual appointment-- on a weeknight.  The staff seemed to really get along and be cohesive, no BS salon tension that can make stuff super awkward.

That's about where the positive stuff ends.  We all know that I can be a little bit awkward, especially when exhausted or in a new situation and when I got my cut I was both.  I told my stylist (who I honestly don't believe habitually gives such shitty cuts so I will refrain from using their name) that I'm pretty fearless when it comes to my hair; there's no such thing as too short, there's no such thing as too funky.  I also mentioned that I was pretty into keeping a normal bob and that I am a big fan of "china bangs" as I suppose they're called.  We settled on a graduated bob with some kind of side swept bangs that we would play around with a bit.

What happened after that was nothing near a graduated bob.  I have ultra super fine hair that you cannot dry cut and you cannot thin out.  Both were done.  My crown was cut down to about 2 inches with a big GNARLY hey-look-I-have-layers line that circled the back of my head with two big sad, sad, sad, sad dangly chunks in the front that kinda flopped in the front-- and were the only parts of my hair that would actually MOVE.  Not only that but the right side was about an inch and a half (!!) shorter than the left and there was a gigantic notch cut out of my bangs that was about an inch shorter than the rest that I didn't notice until I got home because my bangs were very conveniently side swept to hide it-- a convenient cover up?

It was one of those "omg I can't say anything about this or I will burst into tears" moments in the chair.  It didn't help that my hair was R-A-T-T-E-D when it was styled and had just about enough product in it to patch a tire.   I waited until I got home until I committed to hating it and ended up crying on the phone to my mother (a former stylist).

What made matters worse; being that I work with the public daily as an on-site marketing manager for a super up and coming out-of-home digital technology and media company, upon arriving at work, my BOSS insisted that I go get my hair fixed before I came back to work the next day.  It was genuinely tore-up.  After examining my hair-- and providing plenty of slow, sad head-shakes and clucks of the tongue-- my new stylist (Jeff at Art and Science: Evanston! who squeezed me in even) determined the only course of action in fixing the shit pile on my head was a pixie cut.  And FORTUNATELY I look, in the words of our former governor, Bleeping Golden.

I called and left a voicemail for the salon which was returned with an equally sweet voicemail message but I'm just too embarrassed and uncomfortable to really beg for my money back.  I think this is just one for the books, and one for yelp, to know better for next time.

I guess there are more "pro"s to the place-- it was real cheap!  And the dogs were pretty cute.

I can for sure say that I will not be back-- but I will be returning to Jeff at Art and Science in Evanston-- but I don't think that this salon is terrible.  I don't even think that my stylist is terrible.  It was just a super unfortunate negative experience that will make me seriously hesitate before I bestow any trust into a stylist ever again.

If you do go to Urban Lift for the first time, I strongly suggest being a little more assertive than I was capable of being.  Also, it might help to not mention that you really love Wilson-Phillips, Nelson, Liz Phair or Celine Dion.  Just Sayin.

Mary is gone now and Mariana is on an extended leave of absence, but Mel, Natalie, and John are still there, and they've added a great gal named Lindsey to the staff.  Normally, the loss of a trusted stylist would send me into catatonic shock, but not in this case!

Lindsey took over where Mary left off and, I have to say, she gives GREAT cut. She understood exactly what I needed in my cut and delivered, just in time for a job interview.  She also did a great job waxing my eyebrow's - not only do I not look like a wookie any longer, I'm looking pretty darn great.

Same amazing service and with some new staff, no less!  Despite the loss of Mary, I'm as dedicated to this place as ever! Friendly, affordable, and professional, Urban Lift never fails to deliver!

Add me to the looooooong list of Yelpers who had a fabulous experience at Urban Lift!

I walked in tonight for my appointment with John, who was friendly and personable and immediately offered me lots of different kinds of booze.  He gave me a glass of wine, but after hearing about my coffee craving, brought me out a cocktail of milk and starbucks liquor, which really hit the spot.

And my hair!  I no longer look like a wildebeast from the woods.  I have shape and volume and layers and shine - all in the span of half an hour.  We chatted a bit about my hair, and I told him I usually am a low maintenance kinda gal, and other than not cutting it shorter than chin length, I had no restrictions and I was putting myself in his hands.  I was really pleased with the result.  It's low maintenance but looks GREAT!

I usually hate salons and either switch around a lot or don't go at all.  But I think I've found a new home at Urban Lift.  Or, as John put it, "You're going to move in, you're never going to leave!"  And he was right - I didn't want to leave ;)  So much fun!

After 6 months without a haircut because I refused to return to my previous stylist, I was in desperate need of a new salon/stylist/cut...I came to Yelp and was wondering if the things people were saying about Urban Lift were too good to be true...

This place is true to its glowing reviews. I went to Mary, told her of my 6 month cut hiatus and she didn't reprimand me :)  She was so sweet and funny -- and gave me a killer cut, just what I wanted.  I will 100% return to UL and Mary, in particular.

PS -- I had a 10:30 am appt on a Saturday morning, and they offered water, coffee, juice and beer. I think I'm in love...

Okay, so I don't like to review a hair place until a few visits.  The longevity of a haircut is just as important as it is when it's freshly cut.

LOVE this place!  After searching for a salon and being disappointed from high end corporations to smaller privately owned businesses, I'd have to say I've found a home here.

First, the atmosphere is laid back and relaxed.  You get offered drinks, food (if they have it), and anything else to be comfortable.  The folks are in jeans and look like real people and the stylists all have their own look.  No cookie cutter we-wear-all-black and have blonde wavy hair with too much hair spray in it stylists here.  I hate feeling like I have to dress up to go to the salon and then feel under done next to everyone else.  I could wear PJ's here and no one would care!

Second, I've been more than happy with the color and cut each time.  Natalie is fabulous!  I have curly hair that most stylists freeze at, give me a few layers, blow dry with a diffuser, push me out the door, and leave me with the same look I've had since I was 15 years old.  Everyone is afraid to give me shaping or even help get rid of some of the bulk.

Natalie gave me shape, even some cute long bangs (that I was terrified of having before), thinned out some of the bulk so my hair didn't sit like a pyramid, and showed me how to style it straight if I ever wanted.  I LOVE it!  Now I can wear it curly, curled, or straight and it doesn't take me more than 15 minutes to do any of these things.  It's nice to have versatility and look like I'm 25, not 15.  And I get a crap load of compliments!

They always remember me, have great conversation and make me feel good about being there.  I've brought a co-worker and my sister to Natalie and both were amazingly happy with the results.  My sister will be coming back and my co-worker would if they were closer to her house.

Also, Natalie makes sure you are happy.  She says that if you go home and don't like something about it (bangs too long, color too bright) just give her a call within the week and she'll re-do what needs to be done to make you satisfied.  But you probably won't have to, since it's so good.  And the hair cut grows out well, so I've never had an awkward "my hair is growing out" phase!

    I definitely suggest this place!

I'm unusually picky and somewhat paranoid about getting my hair cut.  As a former hairdresser myself, I tend to be extremely judgmental about everything salon-related.  This makes me go far too long between tending to my tresses (which is NOT a good thing!).  I've just recently moved to Chicago, was in dire need of a good cut, and decided 9after reading reviews on here) to give Urban Lift a shot.

I was able to get in the same day I called, and was booked in with Lynzie.  Upon my arrival I was promptly greeted with a smile by the receptionist, and welcomed in.  My stylist was ready for me right away, and actually listened to what I had to say.  She wasn't distracted by anyone or anything else, gave me her full attention, explained everything she was doing as she cut and styled me.  I'm one who doesn't go for idle chit-chat when I'm in for "me" time, and I appreciated that she didn't try to do so.  It was all about me, my hair and what I wanted.  I left with a great haircut, a great experience, and a new stylist!

I got my hair cut here a little while back....the people were nice, the salon was cute, but the haircut was horrrrrrreeeennndous! I cried for about 2 days after that happened. I usually cut my own hair or have friends do it, as I am a professional hairstylist myself but I thought I would treat myself and I read the good reviews on here!
I was really disappointed, I wanted layers....they were uneven on one side, I wanted longer angled bangs....I got really sharp angled short short pixie bangs...and to top it off, I really only use hairspray in my hair, she put at LEAST 5 styling products into my hair! Even I know that it totally unnecessary! I don't need mousse....gel...root lifter...thickener AND hairspray! I had to wash my hair as soon as I got home it was so gross....ugh

I would suggest researching your stylist A LOT before coming here if you do, and also....don't be as nice as me! I was way too nice and tipped her like 15 bucks anyways because I know how the beauty industry is and how tipping is. So yeah...I was being nice, but the haircut sucked big time!

i got my hair cut for the first time here last week, and i am So Happy. I have the kind of hair that always takes like, 7 minutes to cut because it's so fine, and so I have a big issue with paying lots of cash for haircuts...so you could just say i'm not big into high maintenance hair. i'm cool with going to a beauty school and getting a hair cut, or a hair cuttery, or whatever. this time however i decided i wanted something new done at a nicer place, and i am so glad i made the decision to come here! reasonable prices for a salon experience.

great stylist natalie who made me feel so comfortable, even though i told her the truth about my embarrassing hair approach. i am definitely going to continue my visits there. she performed the miracle of cutting my hair so that you can't tell its shorter, but its just BETTER. looks so much better now when i leave it curly, and looks great when i decide to blow it out straight. she did a phenomenal job and it was money well spent.

I believe it is officially time to profess my love for Urban Lift and Melle.  I generally like to visit salons of any type (hair, nails, spas) twice before reviewing, and trust me.... it was hard to hold out on this one.  However, I don't think you can give a good review before seeing how your hair grows out and how it is addressed the next time.

Why do I love Melle so much?  Well, she is the first stylist that actually said how I should cut my hair and why.  She explained what could be improved from its current status, how the shape would work with my face shape, hair texture etc.  It wasn't only super cute, but also ended up growing out very well, especially since I was super busy and didn't come back in for twelve weeks :(

Another plus?  When I came back she asked how it worked and actually addressed some of the issues (e.g. hair flipping out instead of in)!  What stylist ever does that or even knows how to?

I've seen some of the other stylists do their thang while hanging around and they all seem great as well.  Everyone's super friendly and the salon is very cute.

I love getting my hair cut and can't wait to go back :)
