I think Dr. Millsap deserves an updated review.

I know I said I'd never go anywhere else for my eyeball needs, but I moved away again (I move a lot) and got a new insurance again. After a terrible experience elsewhere, I came crawling back to Dr. Millsap to fix me. Like always, he was caring, funny and just an all around great doctor.

I also wanted to state that I have also seen Dr. Lynn and while she was good at her job, she just wasn't nearly as friendly as Dr. Millsap.

Yay!
Alright so My roommate woke up with a bright red eye.  It was really painful and she could not keep either eye open.

I called Urban Eyecare and we were there within 10 minutes.  They were very nice and even gave her a discount because she didn't have the right kind of insurance.

They were so nice that I decided to come back 4 days later for a check up.  (oops 2 years went by without one PLUS i need contacts hella bad (yes i said hella))  So I went in and had Dr. Millsap.

Zero complaints.
Five stars.

Have you ever seen that Lenscrafters commercial where the old lady puts on new glasses and when her husband asks her, "Honey, can we go home now?" And he suddenly looks like a smokin' hot young stud? This place is kind of like that only instead of your husband, Dr. Millsap is like that guy, except instead of asking if you want to go home, he asks, "Can you see better with #1, or #2?"

But seriously--Urban Eyecare is great. Dr Millsap is super personable and takes a lot of time to answer questions and explain what he's doing--I don't know if you're like me but when people mess around with my eyes I get a little freaked out. He has a great bedside manner, and seems to really love his job.

It's easy to get an appointment here as well, and they have a really cool, affordable selection of glasses to check out should you have to wait at all (but usually I don't). They are great about working with different insurance companies, and Dr. Millsap even advised me about starting an HSA. How cool is that? They are also really fair in their pricing of contacts and even give you a discount if you order a whole year's worth.

So in summary--screw going to Lenscrafters! This is a wonderfully run local business with way better doctors, glasses and prices.

I get the feeling that they could be less expensive.  Other than that, I have nothing but good things to say about their work.  The staff is friendly, the Dr.s are solid.  I'm not fond of the eyewear selection.  But that's kinda unimportant.

Dr. Millsap is very un-doctor like. I work with doctors on a daily basis and he's different, he's nice, friendly, and didn't act like he was in a super big hurry to see the next patient. Nice! They don't have a mega huge selection of frames but the office staff were nice and helpful. I didn't notice a difference of price between this place and Pearle eyevision so I would most definitely come back. Cute frames, excellent service.

All around excellent experience. I was in and out in no time. The girl in the front recommended a pair of sunglasses that I fell in love with. Explained all the insurance costs, was super sweet. The doctor (Dr. Chad Millsap) was really nice and explained everything he was doing. He didn't laugh at my stoner joke during the glaucoma test, but I don't blame him.

The collection of glasses they have in here is really great. It was the perfect mix of quirky, fun, and classic. I ended up going with a pair of LaFont sunglasses. They are letting me come in for one more test when I pick them up since I was on my way to work. They also tightened up my old glasses for free. Super accommodating.

Wow, I have to say I was really impressed with Urban Eyecare! Not only was the place new, clean and well organized, so was doctor Dr. Millsap. He was thorough and quick while very nice at the same time. I was also impressed at how on time he was. I value my time and am glad that he values my time as well.

I look forward to making a trip to him next year!

I had my first eye appointment in 5 years here.  Dr. Millsap made it a better experience than I expected.  They always had flexibility in scheduling and when I canceled once were able to get me in 2 days later!

Dr Millsap makes everything very comfortable and even cracks a few jokes.  He is definitely better than the doctor I saw 5 years ago (hence the reason I never went back)

But I found out I needed glasses - and didn't buy them from here (a little expensive for me - I don't have insurance), but they do have a great (and very fashion forward) frames selection.  And they didn't seem to mind that I was taking my prescription elsewhere.

Anyways, I'll be back in a year for a checkup!!

I'm so happy to say that I don't have to pick out any frames from their fine selection. The first time I went in, I inquired about Lasik, Dr. Millsap gave me some info and told me when I was ready he's be glad to go over it in depth.

I did the contacts for some time, then when I had a strange swelling of my eyelids I was advised to be out of my contacts until things cleared up. Since you have to be out of your contacts for a bit before lasik, when all was cleared up I decided to get more info.

He did the pre-screening and gave me a referral to Kraft Eyecare, which he works in conjunction with. There are follow ups with lasik, which I get done at Urban all included with the cost of the procedure.

Even though I'm out of lenses, and seeing just great, I still need exams so I'll continue coming here.

Best optometry experience so far. I had heard good things from work people, and it was a quick walk - so I figured might as well. Most thorough exam I think I've ever gotten.

Every time I'd been to my previous doctor, I was in and out in twenty minutes with a prescription in hand, a free contact lens case, and none of my questions answered.

This was nothing like that. I spent more than an hour in just the exam, and then another half hour picking out a frame. I'm not complaining at all, it was great. To actually not be rushed in and out was a new experience.

Ended up spending about three hundred on a new set of frames, but I'm cool with it, considering I needed new ones. The actually had a pretty sweet collection of guy's frames which is definitely not the norm.

Highly recommended.

These people are excellent.  Efficient and pleasant.  Contacts and glasses (I have both, though I don't wear them at the same time) are fairly priced although not cheap.  I highly recommend them.

That said, why do they make you undress for your eye exam?  Okay, they don't really.  It just sounded like a funny thing to say.

I went to Dr. Millsap for my first pair of glasses about six months ago.  The experience was great -- the doctor and staff were friendly and knowledgable, and they didn't try to pressure me into busying more expensive frames than I wanted to.

What really impressed me abouy Urban Eyecare, however, was that when I needed to have my glasses adjusted several months later, I was able to just walk in and they fixed them immediately, at no cost.  That level of service makes it worth paying just a bit more than at, say, Lenscrafters.

I have gotten 2 pair of glasses from here and was very happy with both. They have a wide array of choices and and a vast range in price. They accept almost all vision insurance and have weekend hours!
I always get complimented on my glasses and they were on the "inexpensive wall". If you want cheaper glasses go to America's best or something, but if you want nice quality frames for a decent price and get professional service go to Urban eye care.

I've seen both the doctors, and they are both very friendly and helpful.  The staff at the front of the store is also a pleasure to work with and has helped me with my insurance issues.  I haven't purchased frames here, but have gotten new lenses through them and they turned out to be ~$100 cheaper than Lens Crafters across the street (go figure).  In addition, the contacts I ordered from them are the cheapest I've gotten without having ordered them online.

I haven't been to their doctor, but I did go in to purchases eyeglasses this weekend based on yelper's recommendation and was SHOCKED that no one had mentioned that this place is OBSCENELY expensive.

$400+ for frames?!?! Are you kidding me?

They don't carry any of the good, non-traditional brands I had hoped to see, and the ones they did carry were very over priced. If you are one of those people who prides themselves on purchasing things from overpriced stores with 4 items per shelf -- this is the eyeglass place for you! The staff was disinterested and generally awkward.

On the whole, I was very disappointed considering how many eyeglass stores are in a one block radius of this location.

This place is great.. very very great.
If you want some hip glasses, a good exam, with an amazing doctor.. This place is it.
The staff is very friendly! I didn't have to wait for my appointment at all.
They accepted my medical insurance very very well and were just overall friendly to me. The experience there was very one on one. You felt like they took care of you really well.
Go here if you want a good eye exam and some great glasses..

Yay for Urban Eyecare!!! Dr. Chad was wonderful... I've had trouble seeing after all my eye appointments from other eye dr's, but not here! Dr. Chad took time and talked to me about my eyesight... The staff was friendly and my glasses and contacts came in within days... No long waits.  I recommend them if you're looking for a great dr and great service.. You won't go wrong!

I have not seen either of the doctors here, I went just to buy new glasses.  The prices are what you would expect.  They are fair, and they even threw in a discount for me.

What I like is the customer service experience.  Before checking out Urban, I tried Lenscrafters across the street.  The quality of frames, the environment, and the customer service is far better at Urban.  I was greeted immediately upon walking in, and an associate picked out a few (like 12) frames that would fit my face.  She sat me down and I tried them on.  She would take them back or get me new ones depending on my reaction to each frame.  She was really paying attention to what I wanted and how they looked.  She didn't try to push the most expensive frames or any lens treatments on me, but she gave me all the info I needed.  She saved all my info so that I could come back another day with a friend to make a final decision.

I have been back once since getting my new glasses in Jan 2009, and that was just to get them adjusted after my first day of wearing them.  Was treated the same way on my readjustment visit.  I would recommend Urban over Lenscrafters.  If you are going to wear glasses daily or even a few times a week, it makes sense to pay a little bit more yet get so much more.

Have you ever shopped at a glasses store where you had to ask a sales person to get out another frame for you every 3 seconds? Well, I have too. And I don't like it. I'm not helpless, so let me peruse the frames without having to battle for the sales person's attention. Because let's face it. No one picks glasses without trying on 40909 million pairs first. This is my first star for Urban Eyecare. All the frames are neatly set on shelves so you can try on, laugh in the mirror, and model any of their 200 or so frames all you want.

Second star awarded to their awesome staff. The Dr. was pleasant and fast. The gals in the front are attentive, but not pushy from the second you walk in the door. Honest too. If I tried on a pair of orange cat-eyes and they looked horrid, the girls would say, "I think this shape looks better on your face- here try these." Nice, polite, and honest. They won't let you walk out with a train wreck on your face.

Third star is for how well they finesse your insurance coverage. I paid a very reasonable price for a year's worth of contacts and bitchin frames. Plus, all I gave her was my SSN and she did the rest. I never saw paper work.

Fourth star is for selection. Top style frames, for less than Lens Crafters or boutique prices. But, yes people, if all you want are glasses so you read a book before bed, you might want to go somewhere else (mom and pop shop or Walgreens) for cheapies.

Fifth star is for consistency. The bf and I went in the other day because the paint was starting to chip off his frames. Turns out they were still under warranty- they had another pair on the way within a couple days. Out of control customer service every time. Well done.

The exam was okay, but I just kept getting cold vibes from everyone there.   Not that they were deliberately unfriendly, just not very friendly.  Maybe it was the day, maybe it was me, who knows...I felt a little bit like it was a cattle call, the Dr. really didn't spend much time getting to know me (and maybe that's just the way they operate, but I've had so many other places where they really take a few minutes to chit-chat).  She just ushered me into the room, didn't really give me enough time to decide which view was better (she kinda acted a little perturbed that I was trying to decide).   Maybe I've just had better elsewhere.

The collection of glasses was so/so.  There could have definitely been  more.  I don't know, I'll probably go back, the quality of the exam was good, but the atmosphere just didn't click.

My boyfriend wanted a new pair and after looking on yelp, we decided to go to this place. The staff was great, the prices were fair and they took his insurance. So, he ended up with a nice pair of glasses which were done within 3 days. Highly recommend to everyone looking for a nice pair of glasses. Likely, I will go there myself when I need to get my eye exam.

I hadn't been to the eye doctor in a while, and I was dreading it because it's usually such a hassle and expensive.

I was so pleasantly surprised by Urban Eyecare.  First of all, they have convenient hours and you can get an appointment within a few days... huge plus.  Everyone there was super nice and helpful from the moment I walked in.  I saw the doctor very quickly, and was in and out in under 45 minutes! Awesome!

Also, I wasn't expecting my vision program to cover anything... my insurance only covers a few very random places.  The receptionist told me that they don't take my discount program, but they would give me a discount for my exam anyway!  I was psyched.  She gave me a quote for how much my contacts would cost if I ordered from them, and it was VERY reasonable... less than my health insurance discount program site! I actually walked out in a better mood than when I went in...crazy.

I got my new glasses here a few months ago, and I loved the service here -- The store carries very high-quality, stylish frames, the optometrists are well-credentialed, and my eye exam went very well. For such a small store, my insurance ended up working here!  Even with insurance, the whole package was more expensive than it would have been at the typical suburban mall national chain, but if you're willing to spend extra for your eyes (and you should be) -- Urban Eyecare is a great place.

Note: I bought Robert Marc frames, which the store has in a case in the middle of the floor, and is what I believe to be the best brand there (especially for the heavier-frame, horn-rim style) -- I was also told the store rotates their inventory frequently (once or twice a month) -- so they stay very current with their brands' lines.

Huge selection of unique frames.  They work with most insurance plans and the staff is very friendly.

I was late for my appointment and they didn't treat me like I was a monster, which was great!

I pick up my new frames today-  Just wish I wasn't on a tight budget at the moment (ah, the hells of being a grad student!) because I couldn't afford what I really wanted at the moment but hey-  they were helpful in helping me find an alternative until I'm rolling in the big bucks again!

I hadn't been to the eye doctor in a couple years.  I noticed I was starting to squint, even with my glasses.  Time to go get they old peepers checked.

We checked our insurance against local doctors and found Urban Eyecare among them.  We wanted someone local, so we tried them out.

The staff there was friendly and pretty cool.  I have a hell of time trying to find glasses that I like that really meat all my requirements, but they were super patient and assisted me for the oh, 45 minutes it took for me to pick out a pair of glasses.  SORRY! :)

The husband and I both saw Dr. Millsap.  We were very pleased with him.  I enjoyed talking to him and he was great with the eye test. Any doctor who laughs at my stupid jokes gets an A+ from me.

I'll be getting my glasses next week, so more to come! :)

I never though an optometrist would be worthy of a review, but this place is great. They taught me that I had a bad tude about glasses only because I never had the right ones. The nice ladies in the front helped me choose some really flattering frames and the doctor dude, who is so pleasant I could bring to every family party for the rest of my life, made sure I they didn't magnify my eyes to level 10 Poindexter.

Now I can actually wear these out...without feeling like "the dud."

DON'T GO TO URBAN EYECARE!!!I had an absolutely horrible experience here! First, I had my annual eye exam here and they tried to charge me for a contact lens fitting that I didn't need and explicitly told them I didn't want. They wouldn't give me my glasses prescription until I paid them the extra $50 (on top of the $75 for the exam). Very slimy.

Then, I had an online contact lens place where I order my contacts call them to verify the prescription. Urban Eyecare lied and told them I wasn't a customer!

You would think that for the $550 I spent on a pair of glasses there they would treat me better. What a joke...

Love my new glasses! Love them.

They knew everything about my particular insurance (exactly what was covered, how much insurance would pay etc). It was no hassle and fast.

The only downside is the cost. I paid about $250 total. That might be expensive to some but my thought is that I have to wear these glasses every waking moment of every day and paying a little extra is probably woth it.

I highly recommend this place. Definitely going back for my next frames.

Like the other reviews have said: the receptionist/assistant at Urban Eyecare does a killer job of helping you pick out a great new set of frames.

I like Dr. Millsap but the lens prescription he gave me felt just a little bit off.  I tried for several months to get used to the new lenses but they never "took."  Headaches and constant straining to focus.  However, he was very good with the re-exam and I'm picking up the adjusted lenses this evening.

I'll probably keep going to Urban Eyecare because I feel like they're trying hard to keep me as a patient, and concerned about my eyes.  I'll update this review after I have a good sense of the adjustments made to my prescription.

UPDATE: I've been wearing the adjusted prescription for a couple weeks now and everything is 100% better.  Dr. Millsap followed up with a phone call to check on things, so that sealed the deal for me.  Great place and great service.

To start, I actually shadowed both the doctors at this office awhile back.  Dr. Lynn was even one of my attending doctors at ICO.  Now I am working for Lenscrafters outside of the city and am really enjoying that.  But I just wanted to give them a shout-out of sorts.  I am not sure if Angela is still working there, but she was great and has a good fashion-sense about her.
Well, that should sum it up, done with my first Yelp review (well more like a comment).

My company offers the VSP insurance, so that was a key factor in finding a local eye doctor. The assisstant was extremely knowledgable about the insurance plan and getting all the paperwork filled out correctly. I thought using the insurance would have been a pain, but it was really easy with them.

Dr. Millsap was very objective, thoughtful, and professional. I got the works - pupils dilated and all - and was outta there in less than an hour. I felt very comfortable and confident with the exam. The frame selection was vast and exclusively trendy.

I just had my eye exam here, and I have to say they are great! I had Dr. Polancek do my exam, she was very friendly, listened to my concerns about my contacts and problems I have with my eyes, and answered all my questions. Plus turns out my insurance has a great coverage there. They also have pretty cool glasses at the store. I will go back next year for my check-up. One thing I didn't like was, just like in many places in Chicago, PARKING! After driving around for 10 minutes however I found a meter right in front of their store he he

I have an update, so I ended up ordering contacts at this place with my new power, and I waited a week, 10 days, 12 days and haven't heard anything from them, so I gave them a call, first telling my name and that I was there almost 2 weeks ago and I placed an order and the line gets cut off, at this time I am at work, and I expect a call from them, and nothing, so I call back and the receptionist picks up, and I say the same things again, this time I ask about the contacts too, and she puts me on hold, and comes back to say "Oh yeah they are here". Now what is this all about? Why do I have to be the one calling to see if they are in? Shouldn't they be responsible business owners and give their customers a call? It's unbelievable, I guess I will have to go elsewhere next year! Even though the doctor was very friendly, they get 2 stars from me for beyond bad customer service!

I actually received a phone call and was told they read my review and that they apologize for what happened, I really appreciate it because they took the time to call me and explain the situation, obviously they care about what their customers say/think. I know these things happen in every business, and I am really glad I got a call from them.

This is a great full-service eye-care practice.  Not only does Urban Eyecare have a beautiful selection of frames, but they offer wonderful customer service and professional, quality optometry.

I second (third?) all positive reviews of Dr. Millsap. He's very outgoing and does a great job of involving you in your own examination-- none of that aloof, distant I'm-the-doctor-you're-the-patient-shut-up-while-I- dilate-your-pupils business here.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the assistants are very adept at making your insurance work for you-- I got discounts I didn't know I could get.

Glasses can be expensive no matter where you go (even with good insurance, the costs add up, especially when you've got effed-up vision like I do), but the high prices are mitigated by the excellent service provided here.

I highly recommend Urban Eyecare and will absolutely go back when I break my glasses (which should be any day now, since we're well into baseball season).

I had a great experience.  The doctor is really nice and funny and the prices aren't bad for those who don't have insurance.

Also, they have a great selection of stylish frames that are actually unique.  If you want a really glam pair of glasses- this is the place.  They have all different shapes, sizes and colors.  They have embellished and studded pairs- something for everyone.

I thought the person helping me did a great job of helping find frames that matched what I wanted. The service here, as well as the frame options, was 10x better than the new Lenscrafters that opened up the street.

Their customer service was tops even on a busy day. The woman who helped me even let me use their personal computer to look up my flex spending information. I would definitely go back.

The two other people I know who recently bought glasses both bought them from this shop. And they look fantastic on them!

Good: They are extremely friendly and helpful with providing services, picking frames, answering questions,  and do a good examination.

Cons: Even with VSP the whole package I picked was like $420 and thats after about $500 taken of by insurance. If you are on budget ask to see the cheaper frames and choose cheaper lenses. About $100 more then I payed two year ago elsewhere, but then again my new frames are high tech (bendy metal). This is not really a bad thing, but it it easy to pick expensive stuff there so just keep that in mind.

Overall -
I look forward to getting my new anti glare / transition lenses. They were very helpful and patient picking a frame and the Dr. Chad was great and very thorough. His staff on the phone and floor were also excellent. If this is not too far out of your way or budget you can't loose.
