Some of the best Bollywood cuisine I've eaten in a long time!

My girlfriend and I decided to take a break from all the sushi, barbeque, deep fried and oily, and overly consumed Asian cuisine and just wanted a more lighter dinner, which evidently lead us here with high expectations for some good curry: lamb curry to be exact.

    Lamb Curry - [http://s3-media2.ak.ye...]
Big chunks of lamb smothered in a thick curry sauce cooked with various chilies and spices: now that's how lamb curry should be done! The lamb was super tender and soft while the spices of the curry really fired my taste buds (as well as sinuses!)

    Goat Biryani - [http://s3-media4.ak.ye...]
Considering rice was not included with any of the entrees, we decided to order this dish because it came with rice, of course! and it was yet another great dish. Indian spiced fried rice with fall-off-the-bone goat meat, which sounds so wrong, but tastes so right. It could have used more goat meat but with the lamb curry already, it sufficed. Need I mention, it was a MOUNTAIN amount of rice for just the two of us..

    Garlic Naan - [http://s3-media3.ak.ye...]
What's an Indian dinner without some fresh naan!? Especially if they have garlic naan! That's like saying, "would you like french fries with that? or curly fries?" Of course, curly! The fresh out-of-the-oven garlic flat-bread was light, crispy, and the garlic on the naan was amazing with the lamb curry!

Urban Curry gives off a hole-in-the-wall vibe to it, but not in a negative way. Spaciously separated tables, dimly-lit Indian decor, very chill atmosphere, and of course, a flat-screen playing your favorite Bollywood music videos back to back. Along with that, all of the food is made fresh to order, the employees are very friendly (our waiter kept our water refilled and even gave us complimentary Chai milk teas), and the food isn't expensive at all. Why this restaurant is classified as $$ when it's merely just $ is beyond me (Yelp typo!?). Annnnndd especially since you get 15% off your TOTAL bill for those of you that check-in on Yelp -- That's insane!

Urban Curry, your going down as one of my cheapest, friendly, fullest, and flavorful-est dinners yet.

2.5-3.0 stars..This review is for the Indian buffet. Went here over the weekend because my guy and I were craving some Indian food. And although the food was not awful it was for sure not the best Indian buffet I have been to.. by a long shot.

They do have some cool perks tho. Discount of 15% to yelpers. Also it  was nice that you got a choice of mango lassi, a can of soda or chai or if you want, all three. The chicken tikka masala was decent, the lamb that they use is quality-super strong. Bengain Bharta is unlike any Ive ever eaten...but not necessarily in a good way..   You also get a choice of plain, garlic or onion naan (very nice) ..overall fairly okay food and not overly greasy.

The service was good, very nice and attentive- but I have to take stars away for cleanliness - the bathrooms are downright gross...if a place lets their bathroom look like that it makes me wonder what their standards of cleanliness are in the kitchen..

There were a few Indian families happily eating and talking away in Punjabi...so I guess that's got to be a good sign. :)

This place has a nice decor when you walk in, but since it was a weekday, it was a bit dead in area and an hour before it was close.  Anyways, I came here only because I purchased a deal where I paid ten bucks and got twenty bucks worth of food.  These deals like this are sweet!

Looking in the menu I usually get lamb, I am a fan of Lamb and with curry sauce it's a win!  So I ordered the Tikka Masala Lamb, and Butter Chicken which was not on the menu because it was a daily special and a garlic naan.  I also asked the waiter if they had the black milk tea with sugar called "chai".

The "Chai" is black tea with milk with some kind of spicy to it.  It tastes similar to milk tea and I usually ask for it at an Indian cuisine.

All the food came out at once, which is good, but one of the curries was hotter than the other which kind of suck.  The Naan was delicious and soft and not burnt.  The Tikka Masla Lamb was delicious.  Creamy and the lamb were boneless.  I like more of the bone on stuff on the meat than this. The curry lacked any spicy because my friend couldn't eat spicy so it was pretty neutral.  The Butter chicken was alright, the sauce was creamy and a bit too sweet for my taste and some of the dark meat chicken taste like rubber, as if it was cooking for too long.

Overall, it's alright I have taste better and I wasn't completely satisfied with the food.  It lack some flavors and the lamb and chicken dint' have much flavor in to it.  If it wasn't for the online deal, I doubt I would ever even go to this place.  Their commercial YouTube video of this place looks really nice but it's a bit different when you experience it yourself.

Depending on the time you go parking is readily available, but for meter spots

This place is just not that good. Cold food (lamb/chicken) etc. In the middle of all the strip clubs (not where you'd wanna go "eat").

The only thing going for them is their friendly and accommodating servers.

The first time I went here, I really liked their food.  The chicken tikke masala, garlic naan and lamb biryani were all excellent. They even gave me a discount for checking in through Yelp.  That was for a take out order.

Fast forward a couple months later, I decided to order their delivery service. I really liked how you can put in your order online and I thought that was a nice touch for their business.  It took about an hour for our food to show up which I think is standard for a lot of deliveries. The food that arrived was not what I expected based on my previous experience.  The chicken tikka masala was extremely bland.  In fact, I had to add some salt just to get some flavor with the sauce.  I also felt like the naan they gave us with our order was old. The texture was almost stale.  It was such a bummer!  I think I will have to find a different Indian food delivery service next time. I need a place where the quality is consistent.

I'd go elsewhere for Indian food, seriously.

The food lacks any sort of of flavor. Honestly, I've never had 'bad' Chicken Tikka Masala... until this time. Imagine pieces of eraser in cream, without spices.

The Palak Paneer was decent as was the Lamb Saagwaala - I guess spinach is their forte.

The complimentary tea was milky, but alright the first time around, but then I asked for a second pour and received a cup of liquid that had one of the most VILE SMELLS that exists on the planet. 2 days later I still have goosebumps remembering that smell.

The dessert (carrot pudding) was a bowl of...shredded, uncooked carrots.

Oh. and our server reeked of pot.

Maybe we just walked in on a bad day.

Honestly, if you want flavorful food, just forget about Urban Curry. Save your time and money and go elsewhere.

At first I was afraid of goat, I was petrified...yada yada yada.

For those who cannot eat lamb because of the weird smell, try any of the goat dishes here. Absolutely no gamey smell - and I am super sensitive.

This place is awesome! We loved it so much the first time we came that we decided to come back for our anniversary. We ordered the pappadums to start, and chicken tikka, palak paneer, rice and garlic naan. The food was delicious, our waitress Maureen (sp?)was super friendly and attentive, and we loved the free chai! We will definitely be coming back here!

I usually do take-out here (it is my default Indian restaurant), but I have also eaten here several times. It is suprisingly good (I say surprisingly because of its location by all the strip clubs). The restaurant has a new, friendly owner. The food is also good. I love the chicken boti. If you're going to eat in, I would recommend the buffet (believe it is $10 and really good). I am not sure if the buffet is every day, but they definitely have it on Fridays.

Tasty food, lots of oil, pretty heavy, very high possibility of indigestion.

    Big restaurant, friendly service.

These are the things that come to mind when I think of Urban Curry. Unfortunately since I felt like I was still digesting all the cream and oil a day later, I won't be going back.

PARKING SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS!!!  I arrived in the neighborhood at about 9pm on a Saturday night.. I probably drove around the area until 9:30 or 9:45 for a parking spot.  I WAS SO MAD!!!

Sorry Urban Curry, I know I shouldn't take this out on you.. but I was just not a happy camper when I got to your restaurant.

We had a fairly large party, and they were able to accommodate us immediately.  We ordered a few dishes and shared them family style among 8 people.  My favorite was probably the curry chicken - it was slightly spicy and the chicken was really tender.  I also loved the garlic nan.. yummy!

Tip: If you check-in on Yelp, you get a 15% discount!  The coupon said it only applied to one item, but our waitress gave us 15% off our entire tab!  SWEET!!!

However, I will still have to give this place 3 stars... it's not the BEST Indian food, and like I said before.. parking is really terrible...

Urban Curry was okay. Friendly service and quick delivery but the food was very average in my opinion.

The best part of the meal was the vegetable pakoras which were good. The rest...eh. Naan was not very good. Very doughy. The chicken tikka masala was quite greasy. As other reviewers have mentioned you could see the oil floating in the sauce rather than the sauce having a smooth, creamy consistency. Too bad because usually chicken tikka masala has such a lovely delectable sauce.

My boyfriend had the chicken curry and said it was pretty good. I tried it and thought it was alright. One plus was that the prices were very cheap. Having the Yelp deal didn't hurt, either!

Worth a try when in San Francisco but sadly this was a miss for me in spite of the good price!

Aside from being in an interesting part of San Francisco, this place serves really good Indian food. I had the Lamb Tikka Marsala, Fish Vandaloo, Krahi, Coconut Curry, Roti and some Naan and definitely love every single plate (although I must say be careful when you tell them you want your curry hot because they really mean HOT and SPICY). I love how clean and simple the restaurant is. Also thought their choice of music was pretty good, usually modern Indian pop, which I think would be the Indian version of Justin Bieber. Anyway, definitely will return to Urban Curry again.

I came in for a late lunch. The waitress at the front was bored out of her mind. So bored I somewhat startled her out of her day dream. There was only one other party here. There were about three Mexican looking cooks in the front kitchen and some more people in the back. I think they were preparing for dinner.

The interior kitsch and themey. They try to make it feel like you're in a foreign land especially with the mural. It comes off Disney land-ish, just bordering on tacky. The background music feels like the music pulled straight from an Olympic Games broadcast.

My waitress took awhile to get my order. I couldn't see why since I was the only customer here. I did however get plenty of refills and free chai which she called "Indian Tea" (wtf, just call it chai). After I was served a couple came in. I'm not sure if they're friends with the waitress but they talked in a foreign language for 15-20 minutes in a manner similar to when a friend finds out another friend has cancer.

I had the lamb gobi gosht with naan. It was alright. The food does come out piping hot and the portions are decent. The naan is disappointing. It's more like naan pizza bread in the shape of a thick saltine cracker. What it really reminds me of is Pillsbury croissant dough flattened down into flat triangles. I'm not really sure if this is is not authentic or just a different version of naan. Either way I've had better naan. Nothing terrible but it's disappointing. I can't really complain about the gobi gosht. It's just not something I would order again.

Halal Meat is served here, based on Signs posted on window of Restaurant. Kind of in a seedy part of town, but near the financial district so stopped in here for lunch.  Tried the Lunch Buffet for $11.99 which was made up of about 10 dishes including Butter Chicken (a little watery), Palak Aloo (Spinach & potato which was pretty good), Keema, Lamb Curry, Tandoori Chicken, Mango Lassi (good stuff) and Kheer (rice pudding - which was good), fruits for dessert.  I also ordered Garlic Naan (was pretty good) and a Chai to go.  All the food was pretty good.  The interior decor is very nice and spacious.  Very friendly service.  Parking on street is difficult.

I work nearby. I've eaten Urban Curry at the restaurant or in take-out form over 10 times now, and I can confidently say they are one of the best in the city. I recommend the bainghan bartha (creamy eggplant dish). I could eat this every day!

I ordered from Urban Curry last night when it was raining hard. I ordered online and my food arrived in a timely manner, especially considering the bad weather and the fact that I ordered half an hour before closing time from across town. ;) (I made sure to tip well) They followed my requests regarding the food (extra spicy lamb vindaloo, with whole wheat garlic naan), and I would definitely order more food next time.

I gave this restaurant two stars just because of the extremely quick delivery and friendly delivery guy, but the food was nothing I would order again.

The chicken tikka masala was excessively creamy and bland, and resembled an Italian pasta sauce more than an Indian sauce.  There was no flavor to the sauce aside from cream and tomato, and the sauce-to-chicken ratio was extremely unbalanced.  Even something as simple as a pinch of salt would have benefited this dish immensely.

The palak paneer was seasoned slightly better than the tikka masala, but instead of being creamy was watery and a bit unappealing to the eye.

I ordered both the tikka masala and palek paneer medium spicy, but I detected no spice at all.

The cucumber salad was ok, not great.  A bit more acidity in the dressing would have been nice, as would allowing the cucumber to sit in the dressing longer to actually absorb some flavor.  Most of it just ended up at the bottom of the container and became diluted by the watery cucumbers.

The onion naan was actually pretty good and tasted fresh.  It was a generous portion brushed with butter and topped with caramelized onions and fresh cilantro.

Overall, the food I ordered lacked the complexity of flavor and spice that Indian food usually offers.  I wasn't expecting total authenticity, but this place is way off.

This is my first yelp post... Sorry if its really long :(

Today was my first time eating Indian food. I ate a late lunch/early dinner here with my best friend and boyfriend. We got here around 3:40ish pm and the place was empty! I'm guessing the lunch buffet rush hour was over and it was "limbo" time (between lunch in dinner).

    We ordered:
    -Plain naan for two
    -Rice
    -Chicken Tikka Marsala
    -Chicken Curry
    -Chicken Boti
total price: $33.56 for three people
    (yup... a lot of chicken)

The plain naan was warm and fluffy and complimented the sauces of the Chicken Tikka Marsala and Chicken Curry. My favorite dish was the Chicken Curry. It had the perfect balance of being spicy and not overly spicy. The dish also came with big chunks of boneless chicken. The Chicken Tikka Marsala had a nice creamy sauce, pretty good. The Chicken Boti was a big disappointment for me... granted this was my first time eating Indian food, but the chicken tasted dry. Needless to say, it was the last dish we finished at our table.

Taste buds aside, I loved how the restaurant gave us complimentary tea (my friend said the Indian restaurant she usually goes to also comes with complimentary tea, so I don't know if all Indian restaurants do that... but it sure was tasty). The tea came in cute cups with stirrers for adding sugar. I liked we were able to add our own of sugar because everyone has different preferences. The waitress was very tentative to our needs (giving us enough time to figure out our orders without rushing us, she always refilled our water, and asked if everything was good). The decor of the restaurant was really nice too, I especially liked the lanterns and likes that hung from the ceiling.

However, the food took FOREVER to arrive when we were the only ones dining in the restaurant at that time! We had to wait an extra five-ten minutes for the Chicken Boti to arrive, therefore the rest of our dishes became slightly cold as we waited.

When it came time for the bill we gave the yelp deal coupon ($20 dollars worth of food for $10) and paid the difference in cash + tip. The waitress frowned and told us we should have given her the coupon earlier, which I don't fault her for getting slightly annoyed since she does have to "recalculate" the bill (i.e. subtract $20 dollars from it). But, she took forever to do so.. don't understand why?

I gave this place 3.5 stars because the food was cheap/worth it, filling, good service from the waitress, clean restaurant, and great ambiance. But, the food took too long (-0.5), everything didn't come out at once (-0.5), and the dry chicken from the Chicken Boti (-0.5).

So I tried this place this afternoon.  I ordered  Vegetarian Samosas, Nan stuffed with Chicken, and Lentil Curry with Lamb.  I also had a Mango Lassi.

I started with the Samosa's.  Unfortunately, they were bland.  They should be flavorful with those great spices.

Next, the Lentil Curry with Lamb.  They confused my order and brought me Lentil curry without the Lamb.  I did taste it anyway (was also bland) before  I  realized there was no lamb!...lol.  When I told the waitress, she immediately took it back and brought it back with lamb and it was much better - flavorful.  The waitress gave me free rice for the trouble.  She could  have been more generous for the trouble - maybe give me a few of the other items for free, like the Lassi and the Nan. But I chose not to make any noise about it.  We all make mistakes.

With the Nan, I usually order Garlic Nan but decided to take a walk on the wild side and ordered Nan stuffed with chicken.  I could barely taste or see the chicken and the Nan was bland also.

Lastly, the Mango Lassi.  It was ok.  Again, it was a bit bland also.

The Waiter and the Waitress that served me were apologetic and were prompt with serving me and dealing with the issue, however they really need  to work on making everything more flavorful.  Indian food is meant to be rich and flavorful  with all those spices, as we all know.

I also had a stomachache after eating here.

It could have been an off day for them, but they need to make their food consistently tasty each and everyday!

I would agree the food is good, but the home delivery service is terrible.  I ordered our evening meal on line and was quoted a delivery of 45 minutes.  An hour and 20 minutes later I called the restaurant and with great difficulty got the person to look up my order.  It was cancelled because they did not have a driver and no one called me to tell me my meal was never coming.   I called Kennedy's Irish Pub on Columbus and they delivered lovely Indian cuisine in 25 minutes.

    8/27/2011 Purchased a Yelp Deal

Food: Tasty, fresh, semi-spicy and rich.  It wasn't greasy and oily like a lot of Indian joints in the area.

Service: The waitress was sweet, friendly and quick.  She didn't even care that I didn't tip.  She just smiled and said good bye.

Atmosphere: It's spacious and cool, definitely not stuffy or formal.

Price:  At about $9 an entree, you don't get that much food.

Quick service, cheap (especially with the 15% Yelp check-in discount), and nice and tasty.

I'm absolutely amazed at the average Yelp rating for this place...  I find it to be completely off-base.

We ordered for delivery at lunch time on a Sunday.  Delivery took about an hour, but was to be expected considering it was gay pride Sunday.  I appreciated the fact that the driver called to let us know that he would be late and why.  Sadly this phone call is the only reason I'm giving this place more than 1 star (which I still think to be quite generous).

Chicken Tikka Masala - Upon opening the container, the BF's first words were "looks like nacho cheese".... and it smelled vaguely Italian (like vodka sauce minus the basil).  He actually had to add water to it to cut the creaminess.  The dish was ordered medium-spicy and there was not a hint of spice whatsoever.

Paneer Tikka Masala - Same overly-creamy sauce... except with chunks of cheese in it... incredibly over-rich and with no complexity of flavor --- just tomato and milk.

Samosas - The samosa itself was passable, but the chutneys were pretty gross...  I found myself eating them anyway to get away from the creambomb Tikka Masala.

Garlic Naan - Pretty delicious, actually... one of the best I've had in SF, but sadly the only bright spot in this meal.

Rice - Overcooked/old... puffy/crumbly texture.  Considering it was 1pm, I'm not sure how this is even possible... was it left in the cooker from last night's midnight buffet?

I felt sick to my stomach the rest of the day and actually contemplated making myself throw it back up to get some relief.

Do yourself a favor and order from Little Delhi.

Location is a bit iffy, but just ignore those guys that offer some "good time" if you come in. Well, unless you actually wanna get one. Make sure you get some curry first tho.

    Food:
    - Chicken tikka masala: creamy, tomato-y, good portion, not too big not too small. The chicken pieces are tender
    - Lamb jalfrezi. Great spice, spicy (well, I chose hot), love the ginger slices and the lamb is tender and not gamy. I love love this dish. Their prawn version is really good as well.
    - Chicken boti: The chicken pieces is a bit too big to be flavorful, so I'm not gonna order this again.
    - Basmati rice: yummmy

Service is great and they give you a free chai tea. The place is also clean, not like Shalimar which floor I can't even look at (it's gross)

My girlfriend and I usually stick to a few Indian restaurants we feel comfortable with and rarely step out of our comfort zone regarding trying new places. We came here because she got a Bloomspot deal.

    SERVICE: most excellent.
We were greeted with a gracious hello and shown to our table.
Aside from the great service and patience of our waiter, the other wait staff were very attentive to our needs. We are not needy people, you know what I mean. It was the kind of service you would expect at a fancy scmancy bow tie restaurant.

    FOOD: most excellent.
We started with the chick pea fish (the batter was light and crispy.) Then, we proceeded to the lamb, chicken and orka, accompanied by some tasty garlic naan and basmati rice. No complaints from me.

    OVERALL:
We would patron Urban Curry again to try other dishes. The restaurant was spacious, attentive wait staff and great ventilation.

thanks for reading my review, WHURD!

Great food with reasonable prices. The aspect of this restaurant that makes it really outstanding is the service!  Very accommodating and patient.

My fiancé and I went to a happy hour nearby and decided to try Urban Curry for dinner rather than deal with traffic & parking to go to Little Delhi. Despite the mixed reviews we figured we'd give it at least one chance. My fiancé is Indian so he's usually the determining factor on whether or not we return to an Indian restaurant. I had the Chicken Karahi, which was okay but I'm not a fan of dark meat chicken so I wouldn't get it again. That being said, it was good. Very tomato-y and spicier than I expected.

My fiancé had the Chicken Boti and gave it an 8 out of 10. We also had the Palak Paneer, which he gave a 7 and I gave an 8. I like mine less on the creamy side (more healthy)...he likes the spinach to be 'saucy' so he was a bit disappointed.

We both agreed the naan was a bust. It was undercooked and tasted more like pizza dough, which made me wonder if they actually have a Tandoor oven at all.

The complimentary chai was good but the papadum was much like the naan and needed to be baked longer. The place itself is clean and nicer than I expected.

If I were in North Beach and wanted Indian food I might come back but I prefer Little Delhi hands down.

I hardly ever eat Indian food, but decided to try this place out for dinner. We didn't know what to order but wanted to try a little of everything. The waitress made a few suggestions and we ended up ordering the Paneer Pakora, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Boti, Lamb Karahi, Navrattan Korma, Prawn Biryani, Onion and Garlic Naan, and Mango Lassi.

    Likes:
Garlic and Onion Naans - They were perfect, soft and crispy.
Prawn Biryani - Love the taste of herb and spices in rice. The tiger prawns were cooked perfectly.
Lamb Karahi - Tasty. I like that it was served in the pot that it was cooked in.
Paneer Pakora - Cheese slices coated in batter with herb and spices. I liked the sauce that comes with it.
    Chicken Tikka Masala - Good
Mango Lassi - Good, but a little on the thick side.

    Dislikes:
Chicken Boti - Chicken cubes on a sizzling pot. Way too dry for my taste.
Navrattan Korma - Mixed Vegetables and Cheese cooked in onion based sauce with dry fruits. Consisted mainly of peas and carrots, my two least favorite vegetables.

Service was great. Place is clean. I'd probably return if I was in the area but it's not the easiest place to find parking.

I ordered food from here again.  This time it was with my lil bro.

    1.  Easy to order from http://Grubhub.com

    2.  Palak Paneer - My bro ordered this.  He loved it.  He said it had great zip and that it was the best he ever had.

    3.  Chicken Masala - I usually order spicier curries.  However, I wanted something a little milder. This was pretty good.  It has a nice creamy consistency.  The flavors were there. The chicken was tender.  I do not enjoy it as much as vindaloo.  But it was pretty good.

    4.  Vegetable Samosa - These were good.  Nice crisp shell.  The texture of the fillings was almost perfect.  There was a nice layering of flavors.

    5.  Vegetable Pakora - I enjoyed this.  Nice flavors combined with crispy goodness.  I could eat a saddle bag of these.  This dish get interpreted many ways.  This is the version that I really enjoy.  It is pretty much a fritter made of vegetables which are fried.

    6.  Garlic Naan - This was good naan.  The amount of garlic was just right.  I

    7.  Delivery was fast.  The delivery person was professional and polite.

    This place rocks.

We always order vegetable pakora, garlic naan, and tandori fish or chicken.  Always delish.
This place is clean, the staff is friendly, and they keep the complimentary chai flowing.

Not too pricey, casual and never disappoints.

I've checked in here with my Yelp app a few times and have received a %15 off my bill for doing so.

This place makes Naan-N-Curry look like a dump.  (which it is...)
