i was here at a random day, a typical day where i set my foot on castro for no reason, whatsoever.. or as one of my good friends say, im drawn to this mecca of queens and trying to be a queen... LOL
anyways, staff were unpleasant to talk to, but their pastries and hot chocolate were alright. nothing was inspiring from what i ordered, which was an apple tart. then the hot chocolate is just your ordinary hot chocolate, i still love bittersweet cafe's hot chocolate.. (oh god! how i miss bittersweet these days! D:)
for your laxing pleasures, it's a nice place at castro, and maybe one of the unusual cafes out there, because there aren't a lot around castro, per se.
I'm the freak who gave this place 5 stars before it opened just for not being called Bread There Bake That. Alas, I am sad to report that the 2x I've been since it opened were less than satisfactory. Maybe I set the bar too high, I dunno, but my croissandwich was meh. Just meh and took an extraordinarily long time to prepare despite my being the only customer in the place at the time. Hmf.
The real letdown was the baguette - very pricey and must have been a coupla days old because I nearly broke a tooth. I was too lazy to return it so I repurposed it as breadcrumbs, but let the record reflect that I would never pay that much for breadcrumbs someone else made let alone ones I made myself.
I'm removing bread products from my diet for the time being so I may not return for another try anytime soon, but I do wish them luck. They seem like nice folks.

First to Review
Technically I have no right to review this place as they have yet to open their doors.
Why do they… Read more »
Chris L. lives on the other side of UB from my house so I like to stop in for a muffin when I'm heading there or away. They also have great fresh bread loaves and a nice selection of teas. They're never crowded which makes me a little sad for them, but they're a small operation so I'm sure they have it all under control. The location is good (close to lots of cool things) but also unfortunate (only a few blocks from Tartine). I very much like that they focus on being healthy and composting and the people behind the counter are always very friendly with nice smiles.
I would suggest that if you're ever in the mood for some coffee and a baked good and the line at Tartine is crazy long then head up to UB. It's a nice alternative if you're not looking for something specific from Tartine.
Don't be mistaken this is not a bakery, they don't make their bread, they get it delivered, and from my experience, the bread freshness is not consistent...
they have good bagels and soup though, and the staff is very friendly!
I'm definitely a fan - staff is great (esp the owner) and they've got free wi-fi and the coffee is top-notch (but strong..which I like).
Bread products I actually have not tried a lot so I'm not 100% sure but all in all a great spot (though the crossiant egg sandwiches I have had and they're great).
got a nice sourdough baguette here last week - perfect consistency, nice and sour, and the woman helping me was very nice! Will be back!
I went here once a while back, believe I got a latté and a sausage croissant. The "sandwich" was very memorable, would go back just for that :) The atmosphere was pretty relaxed yet it was still well light -- good for reading.
It was ok, the interior is kind of bland but the coffee is pretty good. Didn't try any of he bread or pastries but they looked good. Will go back if I'm in the neighborhood but probably wouldn't go out of my way.
1 BIG STAR for having sparkling blood orange juice. It's my favorite juice and it's hard to find.
1 star for a cool ambiance. The whole place feels comfortable, warm, and inviting.
1 star for having almost croissants! Why haven't I thought of this before?
1 star for also having sausage croissant breakfast thingies.
The sausage coissant wasn't perfect, but I think it's just because the sausage could have more flavor. It was not bad, but was definitely the only downer for my breakfast this morning. Otherwise, it was a bright, (and rainy), sun-shiney day!
Happy Ash Wednesday!
I feel bad giving this place such an un-positive review (the staff is very friendly, for example), but, well, I was disappointed. The two stars is based solely on the lunch I just had there (not the bread bought to go). First, my salad was ridiculously small and not so tasty. It was more like a side you would get with a sandwich (but for the price of an entree lunch salad). Furthermore, it lacked flavor altogether (both the dressing and ingredients). Next, my friend's sandwich was (for nearly $10) the size of a half sandwich. Needless to say, we left, $20 later, hungry, and had to go somewhere for more to eat. Luckily the new ice cream place on Valencia was there to resurrect our disappointing lunch!
Nice little place not too far from the Dolores Park. A little pricey , but that's the neighborhood I guess.
I had a turkey sandwich: Very tasty, baked in toasted bread. A little small :(
This place is part of a green network, so it's always good to drop by and give them some of your money.
Much love to Tina and her crew at Urban Bread. The place has been spot on since they opened over a year ago. I live half a block away and it's my go to spot every weekend morning.
First off, Tina's super friendly and full of energy. She always remembers me and remembers what I order and there's a lot to be said about that. She makes Urban Bread feel like *my* neighborhood coffee shop. I really love their sausage croissant sandwiches. So awesome when you're crazy hungover on a Saturday morning. Their pastries are also great. I'm particularly partial to the cherry or apple crostatas.
I'll be honest, nothing at Urban Bread is going to blow you away. But the ambiance and the friendliness of the staff and the patrons win me over every time. Sure, I could probably get "better" coffee at Starbucks down the street, but Urban Bread is so darn soothing and calming. Great way to ease out of my slumber and start my day.
Came here for a snack and a coffee with my two rowdy boys (6 and 3). The breakfast croissant was delicious. I went with sausage, and it was quite tasty. It was brought to my table (let's take a moment here to appreciate table service in a cafe. Aah. So nice not to have to get up), heated like a panini. I could tell it was real cheese and quality sausage. My younger one always likes to have a "muffin," which in a lot of cafes is hardly more muffin than cupcake. But here we had the choice between four flavors of organic! bran. So I went with the blueberry banana thinking I would probably eat most of it, and dangit if he didn't eat practically the whole thing. So it must've been good! Lots of organic options on the menu had me at ease while ordering.
I did notice the small menu, lack of hummus especially (I love me some hummus bagel. Mmm mm); but come on people, it's a small business. It increases the costs so much if an owner has to keep a lot of inventory on hand. I loved that composting and recycling was so cleanly promoted and the coffee is AMAZING.
I don't live in the neighborhood so wouldn't buy bread here; but the bread display is beautiful and the brands she has are great, especially Panorama.
Had breakfast here on Saturday. We each had a breakfast croissant, which were super yummy. And, being addicted to sweets and butter, we had a sticky bun, which was really sticky and covered with gooey yumminess. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I didn't try the coffee.
I'd probably weigh 10 pounds more if I lived in the neighborhood.
I'm 2 blocks up the hill... and whenever I'm home for the weekend, I make a trip down to UB. I've been a fan since they opened.
Not everything is perfect, hence the 4 stars. But what they do well is FAB.
Cons:
This is no PHILZ. But they've relocated down a block at the laundromat so we're not totally SOL. UB coffee, though organic and socially conscious, is weak and doesn't give me the coffee satisfaction I need.
Had the ham/cheese croissant last Saturday but unfortunately had the H/C croissant from Tartine the week before. There is no comparison. I like my croissant with some crispness and the slightly toasted glaze. And oh yeah, I like some ham and cheese in it. This was a disappointment all the way around.
Pros:
Great, friendly staff. None of the Too Cool For You Smugness that seems to be running rampant.
LOVE the ham/cheese muffin!!!! Something not every place has. (Ask them to heat it up for you!)
Breads are quite tasty. My favorite is their walnut bleu cheese boulot. I've got my mom addicted.
I give them 4 stars cuz I pretty much stick to their winners and have a great experience every time.
Hi, my name is Ron, and I'm a carb-o-holic. Thank you.
My co-worker introduced me to this spot on the way to work one morning, and I have been hooked like Joan Rivers to Botox. They have everything you could want in the morning: fresh breads, muffins, pastries, coffee and tea. No gimmicks, crowds or distracting signs. No loud annoying muzack. Just fabulous bread products. On my first visit, I had the ham and cheese croissant, and I bought a bag of day old pastries (6 for $2). I had to go back and get more. Their pecan bars are amazing, the cinnamon rolls are heavenly, and I can't even start on the bread sticks.
What's even better is the customer service you get. They remember you by name, as well as what you like. I don't even have to walk through the door before they are warming my croissant...an what's more is they engage you in conversation. LOVE that!
Urban Bread ROCKS!
If I'm ever in the Castro walking down to BART in the Mission, I always stop in here for bread. They carry delicious baguettes and loaves from Panorama Bakery and I can't really find a better alternative in my neighborhood. Maybe I will buy a few other impulse snacks at the counter, then I'm on my way. Then, I normally eat half the loaf on the rest of the walk to BART and so I have the perfect serving for tomorrow.
Fin.
I was really disappointed... my bagel was hard. hard, like a day old bagel is hard. plus, as a vegan there was nothing i could really eat there, besides my plain, hard bagel. no hummus or tofutti cream cheese.
the coffee was really good, and i was excited it was organic and they do composting and recycling which is great. unfortunately, they have no soy/rice milk.. so again, disappointed because i couldn't have a latte, and i had to have my coffee black.
The bread is good, but not great. The service has been really bad. My friends and I walked in after making a conscience decision to purchase coffee at Starbucks. A worker on her break sitting at a table scolded us for buying Starbucks coffee instead of their coffee. Don't worry, I will not bring Starbucks coffee or my business back.
So cute and so tasty...
I love little shops that I can randomly peek into and get greeted like I'm an important regular... That, my friend, is good customer service! And that's exactly what happened to me at Urban Bread.
I went in on a Friday morning after a long night of drinking... I was, to say the least, hungover and needing some sort of sustenance to get me through the day... And believe me, it was not a fun day. But with a little help from Urban Bread, I survived!
Like I said, I stopped in one morning due to a hangover... But this was definitely not my destination. I haphazardly arrived here once I realized the 33 Muni was delayed like crazy (surprise, surprise!). I walked in, ordered a tasty ham and cheese croissant + a fancy Italian water and was a happy camper. Since I randomly went to the bakery while waiting for the bus, I didn't really have the time or money to buy other tasty delights, but it truly did look and smell wonderful!
Along with the tasty treats, the customer service, as I mentioned earlier, was great! I chatted up the owner for a little bit, while giving me recommendations here and there. She was super sweet and gave me a reason to come back again... And not just because my bus will, more than likely, be delayed... I'll go out of my way for deliciously hand-crafted bread anytime!
I've been a fan of Pan O Rama bread for ages. A Yelper named C.N. refers to Tina - if that's the same gal who's there on Saturday mornings, well, then I also say she's great - friendly, upbeat, happy to see you!
I live from different part of town, I do not come to this neighborhood often.
This morning I have a business trip here in the early morning at 7:30 AM.
As I drive back home on 18th St. the Urban Bread is calling me.
I went in looking for some breakfast treat.
I met Kathleen, she is pretty young lady who serve me.
I order low fat carrot & ginger , and regular blueberry muffins. Them both are very good.
I enjoy this place and great customer service.
I like honesty. That's why I like this place. I was hesitant on ordering the vegan cupcake because I am not a fan of vegan, but the counter staff told me that their regular chocolate cupcake was dry and that their vegan one actually tasted good. I listened and I'm glad I did. Although I'd still much prefer regular cupcakes (from other bakeries), I'd highly recommend Urban Bread for vegan cupcakes.
JONASAPPROVED!
I like their individual breads, they are tasty and yummy and make great appetizers, try the cheese and pepper bread (I may be mistaken in the name but look around you'll figure it out).
Here's my deal. I bought 3 beautiful cupcakes here the other day to take to a SNTC movie night party. The *chick working the counter took the three cupcakes and threw them into a brown lunch bag and handed them to me. I paid, walked about 3 blocks, looked into the bag and noted that the cupcakes were totally smashed. I mean, they are beautiful in the case and the reason I wanted them was to have the look beautiful on a platter. I returned, asked for something to be done, she grabbed me three more cupcakes, put them in a box and handed them to me. I walked three blocks, opened the box, and the cupcakes were smashed, AGAIN.
Ok so this is a BREAD place, but if you are going to offer beautiful desserts that people want to take the a special party or even have on a platter at home you need to have boxes that accomodate said desserts. OR you need to tell the customer, HEY don't close the lid on the box, or here you will need to transport these with the lid open otherwise they will be smashed. or WHATEVER, ask them if the visual is important?! Seriously, this chick was wack. If she wasn't totally stoned on the job I will pay you $100.
Anyway, can't give this place less than 3 stars cause the bread is good, and, well even smashed the cupcakes were tasty. But go somewhere else if you want to take pretty desserts to a party, mmm kayyy?
*yes, she was a chick, she had so much blue eyeshadow on that I thought I was in a Cindi Lauper video, or that she had come straight from a Girl's Just Wanna Have Fun casting call, in 1982.
I really love there bread selection. They have a great selection of artisan breads for sale, from the classic sour dough to, baguettes's to a cheese loaf, which are all wonderful.
I also enjoy there pastries as well. My favorite is the chocolate croissant, but the ham and cheese is my favorite savory.
Also, try the sandwiches. They only have three choices a day, so you can't get a "usual" everyday. I had one that was so much cheese and garlic, it could only be considered delicious.
It is really cute. When the sun is out, it is filled with light. The location makes it more a neighborhood place, but if I am shopping or meeting friends in the Castro and want to relax for a little bit, I highly suggest this place.
Also, the owner is a really amazing person!
I saw this place when in the neighborhood today and a thought came into my head: crusty garlic bread would go well with the mac and cheese I plan to make. So into the shop I went.
A sign by the bread immediately caught my eyes. It read something along the line of: we baked too much bread today, so it's buy one get one free. Serious? I asked the gal at the counter and she confirmed that the deal applied to all the bread, mix and match welcome. SCORE! Next thing I noticed: Black Pepper and Asiago Piccolo from Panorama Bread. Wait, does this place buy the goods from other places? Again, checked with the gal at the counter. It turns out that Panorama is a sister company of Urban Bread. No more waiting till Farmer's Market on Saturday to pick up my favorite piccolos? DOUBLE SCORE!! I walked out with 2 of those babies for $1.99. I was a happy camper.
At home, I cut up one of the piccolos, toast and rub with garlic cloves. THAT, was heaven.
Urban Bread? This is the only Bread I know...
http://www.youtube.com...
...I used to have hair just like David Gates. I had to borrow my mom's Breck so the sides would stay down while I did the hustle at the gym dances. Where are my two-tone velvet platform shoes?
Such an unfortunate name this place has...it sounds like a corporate chain, and it looks kinda like one, too. It has that bland, suburban Andersen/Grain D'or look about it - which seems at odds with the old-style neighborhood in which it is nestled on the corner of Sanchez and 18th. I had heard they make their own artisan bread, although I need extra carbs like I need See's Candies while watching "Dancing with the Stars".
They have $7.95 lunch specials - a panini-style pressed sandwich with a small side salad. I went for the roast beef and peppers, and as it turned out, the bread was indeed the best part of it - a soft, chewy rye. The rest of it was pretty generic. They have all sorts of baked good there, but I decided to exhibit significant restraint. I'm like a nun that way. OK, I'm not really 'cause I had a croissant a couple of hours earlier. What of it?
Look, they offer fifteen varieties of bread and 25 types of pastries. They come from either Raymond's Sourdough Bread in South San Francisco or the Panorama Bakery in Portrero Hill, so it's truly fresh stuff. I just wish the place had a bit more character, some kind of unique eccentricity to set it apart from a mall eatery. this is the place that replaced Philz - which moved down a block. And just remember these wise words...or more aptly, these wise-a words...
Baby, I'm-a want you
Baby, I'm-a need you
You're the only one I care enough to hurt about
Maybe I'm-a crazy
But I just can't live without...
FOOD - 4 stars...it's all in the fresh dough baked locally...nothing else much matters
AMBIANCE - 2.5 stars...am I like in the mall, Tiffany?...like, fer sher
SERVICE - 3 stars...friendly enough
TOTAL - 4 stars..I think I'm getting me a loaf of something good next time
When I first tried Urban Bread they had a great selection of white breads such as french breads. Being someone that only eats 100% whole grain breads I found this not to be the place for me....BUT THINGS CHANGE! I re-discovered Urban Bread at the Castro Street Farmers Market on Wednesday evenings and they now have a nice selection of 100% WHOLE GRAIN BREADS that are REALLY GOOD, LOCAL and 100% ORGANIC. I also love that the bread comes in a paper bags since I cannot buy anything in plastic (personal restriction). YEAH!!!! I am now a fan of this store and recommend it daily!
4 stars for Urban Bread...
I was merely looking for a WI-FI spot in the area to do some work on a Saturday morning...and I landed at UB.
It's a cozy lil' place. Simple and clean...with good natural lighting and lots of bread laying out to tempt you to eat enough carbs for a whole month.
I am a total sucker for croissants...they have all the good kinds. Almond, Chocolate, and lately one of my fav, ham and cheese. They are delicious.
But what really wins the ratings for this place is the owner's wonderful customer service....you can tell immediately she owns the place...an hourly employee just won't ever care enough, but if you own the place, you'll try this hard to please every customer. I sat in the cafe for two hours and I swear, it was as if she remembered every customer that's been there before!
I will go back here for more croissants and coffee for sure.
LOVE IT HERE !!
I'm sitting behind the window, enjoying their good pastries (that are fairly priced), and being happy cause of the nice atmosphere residing in this place.
It is super clean, the music is good and not too loud. And they sell day old loafs of bread that are cheap and GOOD (I'm french, I know what I'm talking about ;) )
Urban Bread rocks
... And the waitress just came to me to ask me if I wanted more hot water in my tea !! They are so nice ! I'd put 6 stars if I could !
I needed yarn for my Princess Leia hat. Imagiknit is located right across the street from this small little shop. After a grueling time picking just the right brown yarn, I was starving.
You heard me. I said Princess Leia hat. It's got big Cinnabons on the side of it. And it's AWESOME. Anyhoo, to continue...
The sandwich I had at Urban Bread was absolutely divine. Lean roast beast, cheddar and blue cheese, sweet red onion melted together seamlessly for the near perfect sammitch-du-jour. The bread was especially good, fresh, and warm.
However, I was shamed into splitting it with my husband. We bartered over it for a minute or two, and I managed to get him to throw in a couple of fruit pastries and a cookie to compensate for my lack of delicious roast beast sandwich.
Husbands should not be trusted with food bartering. I was obviously scammed.
Maybe I should have worn the Leia hat with my bitchin' slave girl metal bikini to get my way.
If you are a chai lover like me, than this is a great place to get a decent chai to start your day (or keep it going!).
I once had the flu for 3 whole weeks and my boyfriend would go to Urban Bread to get me turkey sandwiches from there on the really bad days to cheer me up. If you're looking for a good hot sandwich and it's turkey sandwich day there, order it. You'll be glad you did.
And then there's the bread. Ohh the bread. My friend and I once ate an entire loaf of their cheese garlic bread...by itself. A bread that is good without anything on it is damn good bread. My boyfriend can eat a loaf of the Raymond's sourdough here on his own. Damn good bread.
The staff has always been really sweet to me. I've been going here since I moved down the street about 6 months ago, and everyone who works there has been pretty cool just about every time. Tina, the owner, may be one of the sweetest, happiest people I've ever met. She's pretty much remembered me every time I've come in since the first time I walked through the doors. If I ordered the same thing every time, I'm sure she'd remember it, but I'm not the kind of person who goes in and asks for "the usual"...unless there's turkey sandwiches on the menu.
I was expecting a bakery and I went in and it was more like a coffee shop that sells a couple types of bread. Selection wasn't as big as I expected. I guess they don't bake bread here. I guess it doesn't really matter where it's baked as long as it's fresh. I got a loaf of some of the Panorama bread and it's quite yummy. I am glad we have a bread store here in the Castro. I give Urban Bread four and half stars. I will try some different items soon and report back.
I really want to like this place! It is half a block from my house, I really like the space, and I would rather support "the little guy". But reality is, I only go there when I am too lazy to walk a block up to somewhere else.
Nice people, but I've had hit and miss experiences. I would go a lot more if they had sugar-free vanilla for lattes :)
I stopped in here on my way to the park because I was FAMISHED.
It was almost 4 and this place had a sign that said "breakfast sandwiches served all day." That is probably the best thing you could ever say to me. No joke. It's my favorite meal and I can never wake up for it. I think I like breakfast because it's basically dessert, only you know, for breakfast.
Anyways it was pretty much the best sausage, egg and cheese croissant I've ever had. Yum.
The Immaculate Collection was playing and myself and the staff was JAMMING to that. Seriously. Madonna was damn good in the 80s. Get into the groove people!
Minus one star because I ordered it to go and it came on a ceramic plate. I figured I probably wasn't supposed to take that with me. Otherwise yummy stuff. I'll probably come back and molest their pastries sometime. Yes, I said molest.
Knitting and baking go hand in hand (not simultaneously). That's why this is a perfect spot right across of Imagiknit. It would be cool if they had some big tables because I can see folks going there for some meetups.
I got a low fat carrot ginger muffin to refuel my afternoon sugar level. Usually when it says low fat, it's kind of dry or they make up for it by adding tons of sugar. Not this case. It was moist and I could taste that it was low in calories, but the FLAVOR wasn't amiss. Sometimes you want to have something healthy to balance all those cookies you've been eating but meaning to give away.
Btw, thanks for one of the cleanest bathrooms in SF and let alone for a cafe/bakery.
Lovely place! Since I'm not really pastry fan, I come here primarily for the soups. I haven't found better soup anywhere. They always have some amazing inventive delicious combination. I love the pressed sandwiches and salad combo as well. I never regret stopping in here.
Look, I'm all for the small specialty shop. In fact, if I had a secret identity, it would be "The Boutiquiteer" - lurking in shadows, ready to defend the market share of troubled Mom & Pop establishments.
And, upon first glance, this place looks like just the kind of place I should be using my magic Retail Shield to protect. The sandwiches are good, the decor is cute, they take recycling and composting very seriously (seriously enough to sully their cute decor with large, plastic bins) and it's clean, clean, clean!
So what's the problem?
Well, to be specific, there are two. First: the name. I know I shouldn't fault a place for not having a very good name - after all, I love Tommy's Mexican Restaurant, whose title is just a LITTLE too on-the-nose. But "Urban Bread" immediately sets itself apart from, say, "country bread." And my mind immediately goes to the juxtaposition between "country" - with its green pastures, red barns and tin buckets of fresh milk - and "urban" - all stinky cars, trashy gutters and cynicism. Country never trumps City with me, but this might be the one time it does...
The other problem is related to the name. Much like the city - compared to the country - the place is just way too expensive. I got two turkey sandwiches for $19. It came with a little side salad (read: 20 pieces of baby greens covered in a salty vinaigrette) which, I suppose accounts for something. But ten minutes later, our sandwiches were done and we'd moved on to something else.
Now, I wasn't born in The Depression. I don't horde money in a book with the pages cut out. But $19 for two sandwiches just doesn't make sense to me.
I might go back to try their loaves of bread, but my first impression wasn't great.
This place is serious about supplying fresh baked bread to the neighborhood, open from 7 AM to 7 PM you can be like the French and get your daily fresh bread every morning.
Although there is no bakery in the shop, most of the bread and pastries are supplied by Raymond's Sourdough Bread, which is owned by the family of the owner of Urban Bread. They also carry bread from Panorama Bakery in Potrero Hill.
You can read more about it here:
http://www.castrocouri...
A great place to make a breakfast run for fresh croissants on a Sunday morning.
Urban Bread bakery/cafe is the second best reason for a trip to the yarn store across the street with cutie.
The pressed roast beef sandwich ($8) is fantastic! We shared a medium roast beef nestled on walnut bread with arugula, cheddar cheese, onion, blue cheese. Yes! Two cheeses! The cheddar helped hold it together and the blue goes oh-soooo-good with the chunky walnuts in the bread. The mixed greens have a very nice, citrus-y vinaigrette.
Sharing was the way to go, as it left just the right amount of room for dessert - one apple and one cherry crostata. Both were great, with my preference going to the cherry, whose perfect tartness is complimented by the crystalized sugar on the pastry. The coffee varieties were very flavorful, yet not too strong for evening consumption.
As for the first reason to visit the yarn store with cutie? If you've seen her most recent project, you're already waiting at the cafe, with your only hope.
