This gym is really great especially if you are comparing it to the LA Fitness, Crunch and Ballys and other big box gyms.
The Loft style is clean and definitely fits in at its Midtown location. There are lots of free weights and resistance training options as well as machines. The bathrooms are clean and provide toiletries to freshen up with. The memberships are limited which makes it easy to keep your heart rate up while alternating movements.
I have never attended a class, so I cannot say how good they are. The only complaint that I have is the music, the only music I ever hear is trance or techno.....which gets really annoying.

First off, I will preface this review by saying that I have never been a fan of gyms. So much so in fact, that this is the first one I have ever joined. That said, on with the review!

One night Shelli and I decided to check out some gyms. My experience before that night had only been a small yoga studio in Cabbagetown. Not quite the same...

We decided to take a look at a gym she used to belong to. The Y. We rolled into the parking lot, which was maxxed out. The inside was the same. Filled to the brim with people seemingly on a mission. The trainers/staff there seemed uninterested in us. I felt uncomfortable and unwanted there. Alas we left.

We rolled into the lot at Urban Body next. The location suited us better, so already I was more excited about this place. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by a staff member there that was upbeat and friendly. She gave us a complete tour of the facilities, and we were liking it already. The downstairs has a cardio area, with treadmills, ellipticals, stair climbing machines, and exercise bikes. The back area also has a spin room, yoga studio, and lower body weight machines. Going upstairs we have a large upper body weight machine/free weight area.

This is all new to me, but I was impressed by the friendliness of the staff and the size of the facilities. Across the parking lot, they have a full fledged yoga/Pilate's studio, as well as a spa I believe.

Upon the end of our tour, we were given a 2 week trial membership, and that gave us enough incentive to come back. We were trial members for a week before we signed up for a full time membership.

Basically for me, it came down to a comfort level. I asked myself whether I felt good there... Yes. Did I feel like it was the right environment? Yes. Location? Yep... All the signs pointed towards it being a good entrance into my new fitter life.

The only cons about the place are that I have seen some machines in the cardio area "under repair" for a lot longer than I would expect them to be. Again, I don't have much of a basis for comparison, but with a limited number of machines, I would expect them to want to repair them as quickly as possible.

I used to live 2 blocks from this gym and loved it. It's kept pristinely clean out on the floor and in the locker rooms and rest rooms.  Urban has a small army of trainers of all different types (straight, gay, black, white, male, female) and a variety of classes. If you're a member at the gym, you can also get discounted classes at the yoga and pilates studios next door.  Like any gym, it can get really crowded at peak hours, but unlike other midtown gyms, most of the clientele here do not waste time socializing in between workouts. They also feature different artists every few months, so the artwork on the walls is always changing. Very cool gym and fairly priced, although certainly not for the penny-pinchers.

I've been a member of this gym for a couple of years now & I have to say it is hands down the best gym I've ever been a member of, or have ever been to for that matter.

The staff is laidback, friendly & on top of things.
The interior is way more pleasant than most gyms. (looks more like a loft than a gym, exposed brick, sealed concrete floors, track lighting.)
It's really clean.
& the equipment is all in great shape & there's a wide variety of cardio machines, free weights, & 'nautilus" type equipment.

They used to stay open till 11pm which was great, now they close at 10pm, which is not bad, but not as great.

Overall, it is superb.

Urban Body is the first gym I've ever been a member of - I chose them straight up for their convenient location to my old apartment.  I was very happy for the year I was a member - friendly staff, very clean.  It has probably changed now, but there was this abstract, wall-sized painting that I used to zone out on while jogging - I'm sure that painting helped me lose, like, 30 lbs.  And I like the electronic music selection...  So anyway, I'm not a member anymore because I got a free membership somewhere else.  But if that falls through, I'd definitely consider going back to Urban Body.

While I am a gym whore and keep my options open, this is the best gym in Atlanta.  The people who work out at the gym are serious about getting there workouts done and they spend little time socializing.  The trainers are also top notch.  If you get the chance to test drive the gym ask for a free training session with Drew Dinwiddie.  He is my trainer and he is awesome!  I lost 3 inches off of my waist and 25 pounds off my body.  His website is http://www.ddpt.com.

They provide towels (large ones and small ones) and the equipment is always in working order.  It does tend to get a little crowded in the evening but people will let you work in with them.

Finally, it is MUCH cleaner that the other gyms around town.

After I finally rid myself of my corporate Crunch membership, I settled into Urban Body Fitness.  As an independent gym, I found the service to be excellent.  The upkeep of the machines was also top notch, and they had a great variety of equipment.  Locker rooms were utilitarian, no fancy sauna, steam, jacuzzi, but I didn't really care.

This gym is perfect if you just want to go in, take a class or work out on your own, and then get out quick. The staff is extremely friendly, and the facility is clean and smells better than most gyms. The only draw back is the lack of amenities (again with me and the amenities). There's no pool or sauna, and I for one enjoy a nice schvitz after a workout. And for a relatively bare bones gym, it's kind of expensive. The contract dues aren't that bad ($50/month w/a $149 initiation fee), but the month-to-month is 70 bucks which, in my opinion, is just way too much if the gym isn't loaded with all the bells and whistles. But don't let me sell this place short - it's in a convenient location, the classes are really great, and like I said the staff is just amazing. So if the pool/sauna/price thing doesn't matter so much to you, I would highly recommend it.

This is my gym.  I love the location of course since it is walking distance from my house but I also love the cleanliness of the facilities.  The fitness instructors are very encouraging and take it almost personally if you miss their class.  This is a good thing because it inspires you to go so you don't offend anyone.  It is really like a family, a really attractive and mostly gay family!  This is a bonus because I never have to worry about looking good at the gym but also sad because I will never meet a guy at this gym because they are all checking out my incredibly handsome trainer (Drew Dinnwiddie, book a session with him if you can get one).  Also I wish they offered classes more often, a little bit of me feels the gym is being neglected for the Urban Body Studios, their pet project lately.

Ah, the gym.  In addition to being a closet mall rat, I'm also a closet gym rat as well.  Pretty scary when you go to another city and one of the first things you ask the concierge is "where's the closest gym?"  If you asked me this question, I would tell you Urban Body Fitness.  The Good Stuff:  Friendly staff, lots of free weights, attitude-free clientele, great personal trainers (see Paul Wages or Andrew Johnston), generally not overcrowded.  Plus you can't beat the name.  "Urban" Body Fitness.  It sounds so metropolitan and hip doesn't it?  For a gay gym, it's also very clean-- RE: not cruisy and shady.  For example, I used to work out at LA Fitness in Ansley Mall, and there's always men cruising the locker room (ask me about the muscle daddy in his y-fronts sporting not only a boner, but the most massive wedgie I've ever seen) or sitting legs-open in the steam room.  That won't happen at Urban Body Fitness.  Okay, so maybe some of you gay guys are now rushing to sign up at LA Fitness, but for the rest of you, keep reading.  The Bad Stuff: It's small.  That's my main problem.  It's too small.  They are expanding their business to include a spa, but I'd rather have a new room full of cable machines rather than yoga studios.  It is a little pricey, too, but you'll pay more to work out in a space that's not over-subscribed and crowded.  So check it out.  Or wait.  Don't check it out.  Because then it will get over-subscribed and crowded.
