Got home to find my Internet died.  Crud.

Had to go out and send a work email so I begrudgingly went out to Urartu since it was the only place open with wifi and it was relatively close.  Then was irritated when people took up 2 parking spots or parked at an angle or parked too close to the white line.  Not...cool.

But stepping into Urartu changed my mood!  No seriously.  Not exaggerating.  The owner, Urich, got up and greeted me with a huge smile.  He is the most super nicest person in the world.  No.  Seriously.  The guy is really, really nice!  I bought this passion fruit tea (I forgot what it was called but it's the only decaf one) and it was nice, sweet, and tarty!  Matched well with the cranberry orange scone, which, by the way, was flaky but moist on the inside.  It was also huge!  Not like those dinky ones at starbucks.  Got both for 5 bucks.  Nice.

It was also really peaceful with soft KOIT type music playing in the background.  He knew the names of several ppl that came in and it gave a real neighborhood coffee shop feel.

I didn't know that the hours changed to close at 9:30 and I got there at 9:30.  He stayed open until 10:30 because he didn't change it on the website and he wanted to keep his word.  Not only that, but he wanted me to finish my work.  Then as I was leaving, he gave a student and me his business card and said that if we ever need to study or work and it's almost closing time, we should call the coffee shop and say we're on the way.  He would keep it open for us.  Wow!

I know a previous poster said that EVERYONE has great customer service because of the economy, but I will have to disagree.  I've met many a douchebags in the food service industry and plus, this guy wasn't just nice...he went above and beyond good customer service!

Got an iced coffee and strawberry cream cheese croissant here today.  The place is kind of hidden (to me) since Maryland is kind of a dead street nowadays.  I love having the easy access parking though.  When I went in, there were two guys sitting at a corner table talking and another one using his computer at another table but I didn't see anyone at the counter/register.  There was a moment of awkward waiting but then this lady came out and took my order.   I don't know how the coffee tastes without adding cream or sugar (I'll try that next time to judge the actual taste/flavor first) but once I added a ton of hazelnut creamer to the coffee, it was deeelicious.  The cap was kind of hard to close so I accidentally squished down the whole cup and spilled coffee all over the counter.  I was apologizing all over the place for my klutziness.  The lady was really nice though, she gave me a towel to wipe up and I also had to use a lot of the napkins on the counter to clean up.  Got the whole thing wiped up pretty good while she was so nice, she made me a new cup.  She came by to clean it with a spray cleanser afterwards.

Great experience and the coffee tasted great too.  I think their online menu's old though, the croissant cost $2.50, not $1.85 so maybe an update would be nice.  Otherwise, I'll be back and hopefully not spill anything next time.

    White Chocolate Mocha Latte

Other yelpers that have stopped by this local coffee shop will agree with me that the owner is the nicest, friendliest and clearly the most customer service oriented gentleman I've met. He did his best to provide my friend and I the best, and I must say, it was very close to the best. The white chocolate mocha latte was not too sweet or too bland but adjusted to satisfy my taste buds.

Too bad I spilled half of it :(

But the owner offered me a brand new mix and it was just as good.

This being my very first review, I'll keep it short.

Summary: Loved the owner. Coffee was delicious. Atmosphere chill and not so crowded and noisy (at least when I was there which was close to closing time which is at 9:30pm and not 10)

The guy who works here is adorable. He also makes a very good sandwich. I came here to get away from the library and the crowded cafes. I spent a very pleasurable time revising an essay in peace. The coffee shop feels authentic and has a very warm atmosphere.
P.S. What language was he speaking?

Before I left this place, I promised the owner I'd give him a perfect review.  He deserves it.  This place was great.

I walked in a little pissed off because it used to be a Ben and Jerry's but quickly got over it.

Owner was warm and friendly, you have net access, prices are abundantly reasonable, selection of drinks and treats was vast and it had a traditional Middle Eastern feel to it (without the hashish, which I dislike).  Bathroom was clean, the people it attracted were nice, it was spacious--can't say enough, basically.

Enjoyed it a whole lot.  Intend to go back sooner rather than later.

Like everyone else has said, the dude that runs the place is the man. Only one minute after receiving my hot tea and being the clumsy fool I am I spilled it all over the table. He was kind enough to replace the tea at no charge and he even gave me a pastry because I tried my best to clean my mess.

I only wish the place had more "cozy" seating. I always snag the couch when I can.

Great place, nice owner, good tea (don't drink coffee, can't comment). Park in the lot for 90 minutes free, free wifi and a decent amount of seating. I ate there Turkey sandwich there one time and it was pretty good for a coffee shop sandwich. It sorta reminded me of coffee shops up in SF. A really good non-corporate coffee shop.

Humor me for a second. I know the internet makes everyone anonymous, so everyone's racism and judgmental opinions all of a sudden becomes the focus of their criticism. But here's a tip for all you Glendale-haters out there, if you haven't already noticed, Glendale has a large Armenian population. If you don't like Armenians, DON'T COME TO GLENDALE. Don't frequent Glendale businesses and then complain, "oh there's lots of armenians there unfortunately."

Sorry, I just see a trend in the reviews of Glendale businesses and it's pretty sad. If you have a problem with people from different backgrounds your really in the wrong town, you should move to the Midwest or something, I hear houses are really cheap there.

I am not sure why people rate this place so high...

Probably the best part of the business is the man running this place(probably the owner). He is very welcoming and friendly. He has a good sales technique as well. His work ethic is the biggest asset of this business.

There is a lot of people who are using laptops who most of them are Armenians.

There are some computers and even printer that let you print from the computer! That is something people might appreciate.

It could be cultural differences but I don't feel this place is rated 4.5 stars.

    Food:
It is fine. Price and quality matches the value I believe. But small bugs are flying around so it bugged me.

    Establishment :
They have a lot of power outlet, so you are set! But, it was a hot day, and no air conditioning running inside of the store. It was bit uncomfortable for me to be honest.

Even though the outside tables have big signs "non-smoking," people are still smoking. And the smoke comes inside because the door was open.

Like I mentioned, the most valuable asset of this place is the man. Everything else is just good, but don't stand out.

Free WiFi!!! I'm staying at the Maryland up the street until my apt is ready and there is no wireless, but not to worry because Urartu is only a few doors down.

I had the turkey, swiss, and fixins in a lavash roll and it was tasty! Topped it off with a iced vanilla latte with double shot espresso (only cost $3?) which could have been blended better, but at that price ill stir it...haha.

    Check this place out!

If you want to go to a real coffee house with lots of character where you can get great espresso, etc this is an authentic alternative to every other mass-produced brand.

I go here once a month with a friend or two to get some seriously deadly java and just chit-chat. I like their middle-eastern coffees because they're prepared right. And the owner/operator is about the friendliest guy around.

I just wish there were an Urartu Coffee closer to where I live - I'd frequent it more often.

Pros: authentic coffee house with quality drinks at a good price.

    Cons: limited seating

I came here today for the first time to have a meeting, and till this day I had no idea Urartu Coffee existed.
He told me that he's a usual at Urartu so I couldn't say no.

First of all  nice shop! Free wifi (Can't get any better) I was then greeted by a nice lady which also made me like this place more.

I ordered a latte, 2% milk, and I got it in no time the way I liked it.

We sat outside which has a great view of Maryland, couldn't complain.

Overall the coffee was great, the service was great, the prices were very good.

I am definitely going to come back to Urartu Coffee.

I love that they have big comfy couches inside so you can sit and talk or bring a great book to enjoy.  They also have outside seating if you want to enjoy the air outside. The person running the place was super friendly and he treats you like a friend who he saw a couple of days ago. Def planning on going back. I knew as I walked in I thought to myself "Snap, this is YELP worthy!"

I stumbled on to this little jem last night after dinner at Octopus (sushi restaurant). I ordered their Mocha (hot) and some tea for friends. The owner is this older Armenia guy who could possibly be one of the nicest people I have met.

As I received my drink, I'm usually a little b*tch when it comes to HOT drinks but as I sipped through it was just, perfect. Perfectly hot, not boiling hot, and perfectly sweetened. I was in heaven.

The venue is very artsy but with a tint of the traditional coffee pc shop. They have "FREE WI-FI!!!!!!!!!!" and have three computer set up for public use. This is such a PLUS to me. I mean, great coffee, fantastic ambiance, free frickin WI FI internet and the owner couldn't be ANY nicer.

Urartu has earned my respect and I declared this privately owned coffee shop MY FAVORITE COFFEE stop.

There's nothing more in the world I love more than a cup of joe, but a cup of joe in Uraratu just puts it up a notch.

OH! I forgot to mention, they validate!

Urartu is a warm, communal place in stark distinction to the frenetic energy of Downtown Glendale. Customer service is excellent, there's free Wifi, and you don't feel weird about hanging out here all day (and trust me, I've hung out there for extended stretches of time). Sometimes the seating can get a little crowded and awkwardly intimate, but if you stake out a good table you'll be happy as a clam.

Don't expect "amazing" from the food and drink selection. It's pretty standard and sometimes even a bit prosaic, in terms of flavor. I don't think they're trying to outdo themselves in this department. Stick with the basic stuff like tea, coffee, and maybe a sandwich, and you won't be super disappointed. Pastries are definitely sub-par though, from my experience.

In short - go there if you want a hospitable and non-self conscious place to hang out and do work for a long time, or on a date to get cozy, or if you want to be insular and read by yourself. Don't go there expecting to be floored by the coffee. But, Urartu has been loyal to me, so I stay loyal to it. Love you, Urartu!

I came to this little joint on a rainy night, and it was really quiet despite the Friday night. The owner was really nice and really attentive.

There are two comfy couches and a bunch of tables and chairs, free wifi and some computers in the back. ( old school CRT monitors) It was a little more brightly lit than I would have liked, but considering I was reading, it was just fine.

Nestled in a small street near the theater, it's a welcome sight in the pouring rain. I got a croissant which was huge and really nice and buttery.

I gave it an extra star for the nice owner. But it doesn't have quite the vibe that I feel too comfortable with. You should come here and try their pastries in the morning.

My bf and I found this place nearby on Yelp after stopping by Porto's Bakery and not wanting to wait in line again (the long, long line) for coffee. It was sort of on a street that reminded me of an alley, but obviously still a street just quite narrow and it was very unassuming in its exterior appearance.

Inside we found a few college students hanging out doing homework as well as apparently some of the owners friends chatting it up over coffee with the owner. The owner got up immediately when we entered and greeted us so warmly I felt like I was coming over to an old friend's house instead of a random coffee joint. It was definitely cozy inside.

The owner was extremely nice, and I must emphasize on this point ... extremely!! nice ... very pleasant to work with and although the coffee was only mediocre, the experience more than made up for it.

I must make a note tho, their iced drink cups have leaky lids ... don't tilt!

This place has really grown on me over the last few weeks. Perhaps it's the fact that there are very few small coffee shops in this overly corporate City of Glendale (Home of the Consumer Hell that is the Americana). Coffee Urartu reminds me of what a coffee shop is supposed to be: a place where one can chill, enjoy one's favorite beverage, and encounter friendly regulars.

I haven't tried much of their selection, but I highly recommend their Feta Cheese and Basil sandwich as well as their iced vanilla lattes. The prices are slightly above average but the free Wi-Fi access and the owner's friendly demeanor more than make up for it.

If you're tired of the synthetic culture at one of the constantly spawning Star*ucks in the area, come and give Urartu's a chance or two.  I'm glad I did.

Ehh.. this coffee shop was weird. Sure it's in Glendale and I think that in general the area is pretty weird.. but this was almost awkward.

I walk into the store and immediately before I have a chance to even look around I am approached by two girls asking me if I want a sample of some Ice tea! Looking around I see two middle aged men sitting playing on the computers inside and it takes me a minute to absorb the whole situation. Once I get some time to adjust I order a coffee and settle in.

The pastries did look AMAZING and the menu looked pretty good even though I didn't order food. After I settle in and start to pull out my computer and use their free wifi the girls and random older men playing on the computer talk loud and are terribly obnoxious. I'm sure (or rather hoping) this doesn't happen every day and should give it a second chance but the whole thing was weird. Three stars for wonderful looking food and decent coffee.

My friend and I were looking for a last minute place to meet up to go over some art designs and business.

With Yelp, that's simple enough, right? I sought out a cafe in Glendale that would serve some food, coffee and have free wifi.

And this was the perfect spot; just what I was looking for. It was quiet and calm, with only a few patrons at the time (3), and it had a warm and welcoming feeling. Not to mention clean too!

I wasn't there exclusively for the food and coffee, but they had a good selection of both. I was only looking to satisfy a small hunger pang when I arrived, and their ham and cheese sandwich did just that.

The sandwich wasn't ground-breaking, but it was good and quite big. You tend to take for granted that sometimes food doesn't always have to be breathtaking, just enjoyable (often times it's hard to get that at a random cafe)

The coffee was also good, nothing mind blowing, but it too hit the spot.

I probably wouldn't make any special trips to this cafe, but if I was in the area, it's a piece of mind to know that I can go to this place if I was ever in the area.

As another reviewer mentioned, "you really can't hate this place"

With cheap prices, friendly service, and the perfect environment to work, it deserves your business!

When I first moved to LA in '10 I stayed at the Maryland for a month, which had no wifi (but they mad nice over there too, i'll review them too), so not long after i stumbled upon Urartu Coffee cos I needed to get online!  The owner is a great guy and it's very apparent when the community comes in and talks to him, when I started becoming a regular him and his family were very nice and welcoming.  He would shake my hand and ask how are things!  This place is awesome, I always went in for a Mexican coke.  Perfect instrumental music in the background too, very good for cruising the net to and quiet enough that you can't hear it when you have ear buds on.

I go there about 1x/week and the owner is really friendly and sweet. A really amicable guy. It's usually pretty quiet in the mornings and weekends, and their free wifi is dependable. I get a lot of work done when I'm there.
But what I don't like is that a lot of guys sit at the tables outside and smoke, all tobacco and alike of all different sizes and the smoke often floats inside to the shop. When they get noisy, the closed door helps a little but not the smoke.

Cute place. Not that big on the decor but the Lattes are AMAZING! Free Wifi and the proprietors are incredibly welcoming. I'll definitely be back for the coffee not so much the scene.

    Dear Yelper,

I am writing with reference to the 5 star comments given by other Yelpees.  First, I apologize for the inconvenience/distress this review might put you through.  I must warn you that whichever review you choose to read, you must do so at your own risk.  We Yelpers take great care to ensure that others might find our reviews helpful from our own personal experiences.

    Dear past reviewers,

I was unimpressed with the results of my past visit to Urartu.  I could not help but be disappointed, but because I was quick to trust reviews of this place from other yelpers, I blame no one but myself (for being so D*mn gullible).  There is nothing "QUIET" about this place, or anything close to it (it was a Monday @ 2p.m).  Ten minutes in this coffee shop, and it quickly filled with old men with tired old black and grey suits who deemed to be regulars, spoke in loud obnoxious manner and smelled like cheap cologne and damp ashtray.  I'm sorry that was just mean...but oh well, actually, as I sit here writing this review, I can't help but think..."OMG, the mob might someday snatch me, stick me in a trunk and beat the crap out of me."  I do have to say, that their coffee is up to par, but the scone I purchased was dry and overly sweet.  The owner is very friendly, I give you that, but with today's economy...business owners, I find are soooo daymn friendly these days.  The parking situation was a nuisance, you're only allowed 1 1/2 hours of free parking.  So, if you choose to come here to study, you're gonna need to pause, take your car out and park it again.  Basically to sum it up, if you want to study, come here so that I can actually have a quiet study time at the coffee houses I go to. Geesh, I'm so bitter.
