This place freaks me out a little.
Why?
Because the last time I was in a place that was this comfortable talking about "vaseline" and "nipple protection" I really wanted to leave.
Friendly staff and lots of product.
If I ever decide to run again when my soreness goes away, I will go back to this place.
Lubrication.
My partner A kept quiet as I told him I needed a break. I told him there was someone else...His name was M.
See, one afternoon I walked into Up & Running. A very nice man at the store came up to me, so we started chatting. I told him my concerns with my current partner, a possible cause of the pain and suffering I was going through. I walked on the treadmill as the man watched and listened with undivided attention. He then brought out M.
At first I was hesitant. But there was something about the man that compelled me to trust him. He really seemed knowledgeable. He gave me some lone time with M...so we walked around. And best of all, the man told me to come back anytime within the next 30 days if things didn't work out between me and M. He will then let me swap for a better match.
Ahhh...this man is good, I thought. He knows my fear of commitment.
For future reference, I gave the man my email address. In return, he gave me a 10% discount on my first purchase. With that, I happily walked out of the store with M.
I don't know how compatible me and M are yet. He's different from the others. He's athletic. He's Japanese. And well, don't be threatened, he's...1/2 inch bigger.
Thus I shall take him around for the next few weeks. Again, I have 30 days. I'll take him to the gym, the trails, and heck, even out to dinner. During this time I'll find out how much support and stability he can provide me, how flexible he can be.
So bye for now, Asics. Hello, Mizuno.
THIS STORE IS CLOSED AS OF 2/16/2009
Store is empty, sign removed, phone number no longer works. As per one of the ladies in the nail salon next door, the store closed last Monday, 2/16/2009.
Bummer!
I was training for Santa Cruz Half Marathon and practiced running 10 miles. I usually run in nike free and it works well but ten miles was way too much for a shoe with absolutely no support, I ended up getting a shin splint and had to get a new pair before the half marathon. I looked this place up on yelp and saw good reviews and they were right. The lady there really knew what she was talking about and gave me few shoes to try out that fits my shoe shape. Nike frees are comfortable but this Asic Gel Nimbus I tried was like running on cushion... like jumping on your mattress type of feel. It is expensive and you can't really choose style or looks but that's pretty much the case for stores that specializes in running shoe. So if you are planing to run long distance or on the hills/ trails you should definitely come here and they'll really help you out.
Oh yeah they give you 15 % off if you are student, saved me like 20 bucks :)
This is a great place to get whatever you need for running. I love it, because the sales staff is professional, and you can tell from talking to them that they have a genuine enthusiasm about running ( or they are just really good fakers ). They have a good selection of my shoe brand of choice ( Mizuno ), as well as some other high end brands at good prices. This place is a must visit for runners.
I checked this place out based on my fellow yelpers and was not disappointed. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and when the shoes ended up being half a size too small (I'm trying not to question this, I did tell them where my toe was), they offered to take them back and order another size for me, even though the exchange period was over. Very nice of them. They ordered two different sizes for me, and when I ended up choosing a third pair, they didn't mind at all, and told me I could bring those back too if they didn't work out. Small town service--very classy!
The only downside, like all specialty running shoe stores, is that you're hard-pressed to find a pair under $100. But you only have one pair of feet, so you might as well take care of them.
Carlos the current owner used to be the manager at Runner's High in Los Altos. He is very very knowledgable and very friendly. They have a treadmill with a video camera to analyze walking style and then recommend shoes based on what is required.
Their service is excellent. Some of their inventory is better than the Runner's High in Menlo Park. Glad to see a top quality running store nearby without having to go up all the way into the very freeway inaccessible Menlo Park.
When the guy who just won "Pat's Run" tells you this is the best store it's hard to argue with him.
I found this place through a Wave Magazine ad, as I needed to invest in good running shoes for my 1st half marathon. Very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable employee I interacted with. He videotaped my feet while I ran on their treadmill, and had me try on several shoes (different brand names) based on his analysis. Ended up with really good shoes, plus a 1st time customer discount. Checked online for pricing and it's about the same. Would definitely go back and refer to others.
How sad that this store has closed...Carlos was as fabulous as they come - taking a personal interest in your running/walking, finding the perfect equipment for you. I was concerned when the store downsized last year to half its previous size, and then really disappointed to see that it has closed. I think it was probably the location, as it was a bit off the beaten path...you'd have to know it was there. Hopefully Carlos is looking for a new space!
Stepped in to check out the newer local running shop (very conveniently located next to Peets and TJ's for a perfect post-rancho recovery). Well stocked with clothing, nutrition, accessories (the STICK) and a decent selection of shoes (had the brands I prefer Mizuno and Asics, does not carry Nike) ended up liking the feel of a pair of Brooks. Carlos was fantastic and very knowledgeable... I assume he trains his employees well. Owned and operated by runners - what more could you ask for?
Professional and knowledgeable Employees.
I used to visit MetroSport in Cupertino. Man, were they great. When they closed earlier this year, I knew Up & Running was opening in Los Altos, but was firm in my stance to not visit based on my loyalty to MetroSport. I thought I could hold out until MS opened up their new store. I finally broke down and visited Up & Running a few months ago...and it's great! The service is terrific, and they are super friendly, too.
I had an incredible experience shopping for a pair of new shoes at Up and Running. This place uses a tredmill and a video camera to asses the runners biomechanics. This assessment tool they use is a lot more accurate than having someone get low to the ground and watch you run off. After running on a tredmill, they'll then review your running on a tv screen and have you try on a couple different pairs of shoes. I also had many questions about running because of all the injuries I've had. They where very helpful and knowledgeable with different tips and suggestions that have been very useful. The service their was great and I left spending less money then I expected. Up and Running is the first place I recommend to people when looking for a pair of running shoes.
Nice service. (Charlie) Analyzed the way my feet land, and suggested three types of shoes. Watched me run with all three pairs. We picked the two finalists, and I ran again with one shoe of each type. And the winner was...
Fantastic staff and owner, superior service, extensive and advanced collection of running gear. Highly recommend this. Our new "go-to" destination for all our running needs -- don't go anywhere else!
Excellent new store with all the best running gear and VERY knowledgeable store employees!
