Really, the only time we venture into this area of Astoria (even though it's really Long Island City), we're only going to the movies. Roommate's boyfriend, for months, has been pushing us to go to Uno. So, two Astorians and a Hells Kitchenite. While walking to the restaurant we made a pact to not tell our friends about the Uno dinner.
First, on a Friday night it was quite crowded. We were party of three and were seated quickly. Large menu. Very chain-ey. Lots to choose from and the calorie count [pleasantly] listed for your reading pleasure. Service is fine. No complaints here.
No prices next to the alcohol selection. Minus points. This isn't the type of restaurant that is allowed to do this.
Roommate and I both got salads. She, the Asian salad. Me, the Cobb. Both were ok. A bit too much iceberg lettuce. Surprisingly (or seemingly fresh). Roommate's boyfriend had the "Numero Uno" - something like 234903483049 calories - but he's fit and can do that. It was "ok" - but nothing to write home about. Clearly one pound of butter used in the crust, but is this a bad thing?
All in all, and remembering that it's a huge chain, it's not terrible. However, in Astoria, with a selection of dozen upon dozens of "local" establishments, I don't know why you would choose this.
I'll admit 4 stars might be a bit much to give a traditional American casual chain. But, when rating Uno's against its peers, I think it shines. #1 You can't find Chicago style pizza outside of Chicago anywhere else. #2 They actually try on their bar. Go to an Applebees or a TGI Fridays and tell me that you'll find anything other than foo foo blended ice drinks and the obligatory Bud, Miller, Corona, and Heineken.
Moreover, I'm writing this review because I'm legitimately upset that Uno's gets 2.5 stars while the Applebee's across the street gets 3 stars? Are you serious, Yelpers? Come on! Between two consistently mediocre restaurants, at least pick the one with a unique food offering (Chicago style pizza) and a passable attempt at a bar (not judging if you like raspberry midori mango frappadaquiris, but you can get those kinds of drinks at Uno's, too!).
I don't know where all the gripes about long wait times and poor service at this location come from. My roommate and I go regularly because 1.) we live down the street and 2.) it's the perfect location to get some food while you wait for a showtime at the movie theater across the street. We've been at all hours - dinner, late night, lunch, middle of the afternoon - never a wait to get a seat and the food and drink always come promptly. At worst, we've waited a little longer than we like for the bill.
If you're complaining that the pizza takes too long, then try getting a chicago stye pizza in Chicago. Those things are supposed to be made to order and usually take 40 minutes for a full size pie. Uno's somehow manages to do it in way less time and this location in particular usually surprises me with how crispy its crusts are (emphasis: usually).
In the end, Uno's probably only deserves 3 stars for being consistently mediocre, but here's a little secret. If you dine at the bar between 5 and 7 or after 10 to close, they have a snack bar menu that includes individual deep dish pizzas and a plethora of other appetizers all for $1.99-$3.99. You can order the entire menu for $40 and have enough to feed at least a party of 4. Now that's how you really "eat good in the neighborhood." Not to mention, Unos basically invented the mini $1.99 dessert which is available all day!
Man o Man this place is no good. There are plenty of Uno's yeah I get it but that doesn't mean it should be so dissapointing. I would have to honestly have to say that 3 years ago this place was decent but now it's just another chain in a weak fence unfortunately.
You would be much better of going to a local pizzeria. This place has a Long Island City address. OUCH! with a capital CH! Waiting on those electronic buzzer things to blink and vibrate for a table is bad enough, but you shouldn't have to wait too long after that, and I did.
The chicken ceasar salad was skimp on the chicken and the water had floaties(gross!) Not the best Uno's and certainly not number one. Pick another card, skip, and don't pass go or spend your bucks.
When I lived in Astoria, my girlfriends and I would come here on a weekly basis not because the food is that good but because it was walking distance from our apartment. It's really convenient if you have a movie to go to right across the street and you don't want to watch a movie hungry, yahhh this my girlfriends did often.
As for food, I usually always order the boneless buffalo kickers with extra blue cheese and the Uno signature (chicken with grilled vegetables with rice and the bread stick YUM). For drinks, our bartender at the time Andy (don't know if he's still there) but he'd hook us up lovely. Yea we were definitely buzzed by the time we got to the movies.
UNOs you're A-OK in my book :]
Listen. It's Uno's, a franchise restaurant chain that you shouldn't expect to be mind-blowingly awesome.
I've had good experience with the service and staff here, everyone was respectful and polite. Food was served hot and within reasonable time from ordering. (~10 minutes?) The food here meets expectations and I can't remember ever being disappointed.
Want to know how much the alcoholic beverages cost? Too bad. No, it's not listed. I ordered a mixed drink on a whim, and it was about $7-8 which is pretty reasonable.
I would recommend the Tortellacci, which was awesomely delicious and hit the spot. Upon arrival it looks like a bit of a small portion, but once you start eating it you realize just how filling it becomes.
Now for the best part. DESSERT.
Mini Macadamia Nut White Chocolate Deep Dish Cookie Sundae.
Whew, that's a mouth full. This cookie is about 5" in diameter and comes in a mini baking pan, hot out of the oven (or whatever they use to heat this baby) with a scoop of vanilla and some whipped cream. It delicious, and I would easily have paid $5-6 for this elsewhere. It's goopy though, probably from being warmed, then drowned in icecream.
The mini All American is pretty tiny, but really good. I feel like I'm getting more value with that cookie though.
I come back to this specific location for the good service and convenient location. It's really not as bad as people are saying.
This place is nothing like the one in Chicago. The one in Chicago is awesome! The one in Queens sucks.
My bf wanted to go here ironically the other night--it's in annoyingly new-ish part of Astoria by the movie theater that also features such unique and wonderful eating establishments as Applebee's and Panera (ugh and ugh).
Uno's now prints calorie information in the menu, which was especially disturbing when my bf insisted on ordering the "pizza skins" It has about 2,500 calories and is described in the menu as "the best appetizer known to man on this earth" or something equally understated. It reminded me of a Daily Show segment making fun of how Hannity talks about America.
Well, we ordered it anyway.
Interestingly, the calorie menu lists calories in each beer, but no prices. I asked the waiter and he had no clue how much beer costs. He had to go ask. The answer was $3.99 for the cheapest, which isn't too bad but I decided against it.
We tried to get a root beer float but they didn't have root beer.
But they do have mini versions of their desserts for $1.99 which is a good deal, I thought. We didn't finish the pizza skins (which are delicious, obviously, because they consist of: crust, buttery mashed potatoes, melted cheese, bacon and sour cream) and we split a gooey (and a bit gross) macadamia cookie.
Our waiter, despite being a tad clueless (or new), was quite nice and gave us extra ice cream even though we were clearly trying to be cheapos.
I don't think I ever need to go back there, but I don't regret trying it (or the pizza skins) once.
i've been to at least 5 uno restaurants that delivered exceptional service and food i'd expect... until i found myself in astoria wanting the same.
eff me once, shame on you.
eff me twice, shame on me.
this place has ridiculously sh!t service.
If you're in Chicago, Uno is an old-school pizza joint that allegedly invented the Chicago-style deep-dish pizza. Outside of Chicago, Uno is Uno is Uno, because it's all franchised, and if you walk into one in Lynwood, Washington or Tampa, Florida, it's the same deal.
It surprised me that an Uno went in at this location. First of all, New Yorkers are absolutely fanatic about their brand of pizza, the wide-sliced, ultra thin, super-droopy, greasy as the Valdez pizza. Also, it seems the "family-operated" pizza parlors of the neighborhood would drive this place out of business. (Or maybe the owner would accidentally fall into the east river. Who knows.) So it was an interesting surprise to see this show up.
You come to Uno to get their deep-dish pan pizza. Yes, you can get ribs, chicken, pasta, or a burger, but come on, get the pizza. The crust is very thick and tall; the tomato sauce is chunky and has pieces of tomato, rather than tasting like it went through a blender for an hour. The Chicago classic is sausage and cheese, but there are many other combinations available.
The restaurants in general have a bar-like feel to them, and all sorts of libations are offered. This particular location is nice in that it's right across from the movie theater, and it's a great place to stop before or after a flick. This is not authentic in any way, but after growing up in the shadow of Chicago, it was always nice to come here and get a taste of a different type of pizza.
PAINFUL. Stop by here for a quick dinner before the movies on a wednesday night. Place was dead but still service was horrific. Our drinks were watered down and disappointing. I am not sure what i was expecting. I mean it's UNO and i have hated it in many cities and states.
Clean, Nice, and Quick right near the movie and the train! I not a huge fan of this chain, its over priced pizza. BUT its a pretty nice place, and u can get other stuff.
Came here last night starving for early dinner as I waited for my movie time at Kaufman. We were seated right away because it wasn't busy which I like. We ordered the onion rings which were really good. The best I had so far in my life b/c when u bite into it, the whole onion doesn't slide out. My 2 friends and I also ordered drinks. Me the sangria (was good and not watered down as I was expecting), my friend a pina colada (huge glass who ended up ordering 2 of them), and another bud had the frozen pomegranate margarita with salted rim (I guess mad liquor b/c she was feeling it hard and strong 1/2 hour later, lol). Basically, we got our bang for our buck with the drinks. Compliments to the Uno bartender! I was craving mini burgers so I ordered the sliders medium rare that came with jalepeno chedder and beer battered fries. OMG, it was actually good and totally satisfied my cravings. I love the fact it juicy and had a lil kick of spice to it. My friend ordered ribs (good portion) and the other (shroom pizza). We all enjoyed it. To top it off, we had the mega dessert which was a huge pizza size chocolate chip cookie melting with ice cream and whip cream. Sweet! The service was great due to our awesome and cute waiter from Florida. Uno's is really great place to eat right before or even after the movies.
