Can't say enough about this class. If you're looking for an alternative way to work out that takes the basic foundations of yoga and puts it in a playful, carefree setting, this is for you. You think you know your body...until you put it upside down! One of those workout experiences where you're having fun while striking these familiar poses--in a trapeze just a foot off the ground--but watch out, because you won't feel it until the next day. Michelle is extremely positive and hands-on, and the classes are usually on the smaller side, so you can feel comfortable enough to ask questions and experiment to make the routine work for you.
I am SO wary to put up a review out of fear that it will get more people to come and overcrowd the class--but I can't help it! I need to share the aerial love! Namaste :)
Took my first class today and it was amazing and mind you the only Yoga experience I ever had was 10 years ago for college credit. I got to face a few fears (hanging upside down is pretty nerve racking) but after doing it the first time its addictive and you want to do it again. I loved the laid back relaxed atmosphere. I loved the fact that our instructor Michelle wasn't a drill sergeant and that I could move at my own pace. I love the fact that I am not forced to buy class packages and can just pay as I go. I can't wait for the next class.
Make your way past the strenuous displays of sprezzatura all along Bedford Avenue and have an unpretentiously AMAZING time in this yoga class. Aerial yoga is a fascinating experience that will leave you craving more. While challenging, it is not impossibly acrobatic. I'd honestly recommend it to anyone with a basic to intermediate foundation in any form of yoga.
In this aerial version, your exercises are built around a soft but strong fabric trapeze that hovers above the floor at just above waist-level. (The fabric is silken, not abrasive, but do wear clothing cushioning armpits and backs of knees as those areas get tender in a couple of positions.) I don't want to present spoilers here, because the first experience is crucial for the surprises it offers. Suffice it to say that the series of poses here offer stretches palpably deeper than those readily attainable on the mat. You will use the fabric like a swing, like a harness, like a ballet bar, like a cocoon. Your relationship to gravity will melt. Each student is allowed to be as rigorous and imaginative or as reserved and tentative as s/he likes.
To relieve the body, there are a FEW positions that will be done on the floor. Like me, though, you may find yourself wanting to play with the trapeze the whole time. That's the only reason I'm cruelly withholding the fifth star. Don't deprive me of the trapeze, ever, for the 90 minutes!
While each class is a bit pricey at $20, there are worthwhile 'frequent-flyer' discounts, and if you sign up for the email newsletter you'll likely come across the occasional FREE class.
In short, the whole experience is low-pressure yet thrilling, and an unusual way to explore the limits of your comfort zone. If you've not yet mastered inversions / headstands in floor-work yoga, there's no better place to get a foretaste of the sublime state of being upside-down! I for one now want hang there all day -- like a serene, surreptitious bat....
I like Yoga, and I love aerial yoga. This class is great. I wish they had it in Vancouver, where I've moved. The poses are so much easier because you're hanging. And the class is just plain fun while at the same time relaxing. Michelle is a great instructor -- knowledgeable and patient . She makes it look easier than it really is, but after a while, you see it's not so difficult after all.
