I love this place. This is an old fashioned mom and pop type store, but with all the little kitchen and household stuffs you need. It may be cheaper to get big things at Amazon, but I like how the fellow at the register will demonstrate how something works and if he likes it or not.
They have a good returns policy too. I like walking into the store and one of the guys says "whaddya need, good morning" and you tell him you want the thing-a-ma-jig that holds special things for making eggs/toast/juice/zesting/holding stuff...and then he goes and finds you the stuff...and you look at it and talk about it and then you go to the counter and pay...
This is a pleasant so "non-big box" store shopping experience. Quite a relief from hunting in Home-Sherpa Depot or Turgid Target with monosyllabic unhappy zombie clerks. The people at Columbia Housewares actually know what they are talking about.
Imagine that. The guys are so friendly! They also have a great selection of shower curtains. Plus all the stuff you forgot for the dinner party hosting.
This place is excellent! Immediately when I walked in the first time, an employee asked me if I needed any help. He was very helpful in showing me the store's selection of hangers. Seeing me scratch my head at the wide selection, he assessed my poor-as-heck-grad-student condition and immediately pointed me towards the cheapest hangers. Nice! I like not having to be ashamed of being a broke student.
I've been back a couple times since and am always amazed at how much they can pack in that little store. They have everything one could need for a new apartment or dorm room.
Went there today after reading the reviews, and I wasn't disappointed. Very helpful, very good selection, full of all sorts of useful stuff. They were out of their usual mid-priced sweeper but the guy at the counter assured me I could bring back the one I bought if I wasn't satisfied. Very cool.
University Housewares is unbeatable. They're stacked floor to ceiling with everything you could ever need and while you could never find (or reach) it all yourself, the staff is amazing. The guys that work there are so friendly and helpful, the minute you walk in the door they ask what they can get you and if you have a lot they'll help you to a cab with it. I even had them install my AC and they were quick and neat.
They have some hard-to-come-by stuff here with a reasonable variety, they're nice, and the prices aren't more than you'd expect for the location. They pack a lot of junk into that small store!! It's often hectic and crowded when you need something (inevitably at the same time as the 1000 freshmen moving in...), but they do their best to help you out and answer your questions.
