I'll keep this simple.
I have dined at Union Street about a dozen times now and love the place.
Looking for a spicy meal at a great price - go for the Rasta Wings or the Dragon Eggs. They are incredible! WARNING: The Rasta WIngs are HOT. Both are around $10 and will fill you right up (even though they appear in the appetizer section of the menu).
Great beer selection. Great atmosphere. Great apps. Be ready for subpar service... you just have to keep on them... it's a 50/50 shot so be ready to just hangout and enjoy the scene.
FYI - the menu has something for everyone. If no one can agree on what they want to eat - Union Street can solve that problem.
Having eaten here a twice before to complete satisfaction I cannot believe what I experienced last night.
My girlfriend and I had just come of an exhuasting 5 hour romp through the DIA, and were looking for a place that wasn't as crowded so we figured we would shoot up to midtown to avoid the football crowd.
Union Street was busy, but not half as bad as the spots in greektown and Harmonie park. So we figured since we knew the food here was good the spot would be great. We were very much wrong.
Our waiter didn't even recognise for about 15 minutes. After finally greeting us and taking our drink order we probably waited another 15 minutes to receive said drinks. Our drinks sat empty for about 5 minutes before I walked to the bar to get some scotch and a martini as to not get too upset and thirsty. It probably took another 15 minutes after I had got additional drinks for him to even come near us so we could alert him our drinks were empty.
If the waiting wasn't enough, the actual food was another trainwreck. I ordered a New York Strip with creme potato's and vegetables, and I ordered a side of the Mac and Cheese. When our food came out my plate had a steak and some veggies on it. The server said he would be back out with my potatos. I had all my veggies gone and half my steak before I could get his attention to inquire about the potato's (I didn't even care about the Mac&Cheese anymore). He was very appolagetic, and brought them out proptly... but it was the potato salad and not the potatos that are suppose to come with the steak. So there are the serving fouls.
As for the food... meh. The steak we good, it was prepared well and seasoned well. The veggies on the other hand were bland and inbetween cold and luke warm. The late potato salad was flavorless (which I guess was good for me because I don't like potato salad). The mac & cheese I stole from my girlfriends plate was flavorless and textureless... it was like eating melted mild cheddar. My girlfriend did receive a very tasty peach cobbler type dish though.
I was fine about not receiving my mac & cheese until I saw it on my bill. I thought it was just completely ignored, but I guess it wasn't.
Miserable service, sub-par food, and failed orders resulted in a completely aweful dining experience. This place should wipe all the nice sounding dishes off the menu and stick to bugers and fish and chips. The only reason I gave this place 2 stars and not 1 is because I have had some very good meals hear. Their Jumbalya is awesome, and most of the sandwiches are pretty good. Their beer selection isn't complete rubbish either.
I live in Midtown and have experienced Union Street on many occasions. From catering, dining in, taking out, parties and room service. I can tell you from years of experience it has always been different every time.
I love this place, but.....
I'll admit, the service is hit or miss. Staff in the past has been spacey or have disappeared completely. The major thing that gets me about the service is that multiple waiters do not write anything down. I can always tell when an order is going to be screwed up, and 9/10 times its because the server or bartender did not take two seconds and write it.
The food is exceptional. Steak Salad, Baked Brie, Club, Lobster, Pastas, Lemon Chicken, and the list goes on.
But... and there is that 'but' again... It can often take up to an hour or an hour and a half to get the food to the table. Budget your time. If you're going to a game or a event downtown make sure you have enough time to spend and get there fairly early. Especially if you want drinks, dessert or coffee after your meal.
Take out is usually pretty good, but nothing compared to actually eating in the restaurant. It can come condensed at times and often in lesser portions to fit it into the carry out boxes.
Catering has always been exceptional. The chefs and staff will always work with you to give the best outcome for your event.
To wrap it all up, the food is great, service is not what it could be, take out depends on what you order, and catering is fantastic.
Allow yourself enough time when dining in (it could take a while) and definitely consider their brunch (when they have it). Its a bit noisy on the main floor due to its open atmosphere so I wouldn't recommend it for a quiet evening.
With all that said, its a great spot to truly witness Detroit's flavor.
Union Street is sort of like my old pair of Vans. I've had enough great experiences in both of them to assure that I'll probably never give either of up. But Union Street, like that old pair of Vans, is starting to show its age.
Union Street has always had decent food, served in an unpretentious, come-as-you-are type of a setting. You can bring a date, you can bring your mom and you can bring your boss. You can overpay for craft beer and you can find the same, tired looking tables that have been there way too long.
The staff is nice, but they don't exactly go the extra mile. There are some real gems on the menu (the Dragon Eggs, The Steak Salad and the Brie), but there are also plenty of duds (The Steak Sandwich with the Machengo Cheese and Cesar Mayo, almost any of their bland soups).
It's noisy, smoky and yes, I've found the service to be quite spotty.
It's good in a pinch, but I tend to wander across the street to the majestic for a Pabst Blue Ribbon and a Black Bean Burger before I'll drop 36 bucks for a beer, a coke a big salad and a steak sandwich during the lunch hour.
There's enough here to keep me coming back to you for another season Union Street, but like those old Vans that have carried me up the stairs to the Magic Stick more than a hundred times, you're wearing out your welcome.
Union Street is one of my favorite places to go for a nicer (but not fancy) dinner out. It's also a great place to go before or after the theater, opera or symphony.
That having been said, it's also very hit or miss.
The food is always fantastic. That's a given. However, as other reviewers have mentioned, the service is hugely variable. There have been more than enough times where I've sat waiting for what seems like ages and I think perhaps this visit will be my last. Yet, there have also been times when the service has been fantastic.
One of the things I love most is the decor... and more specifically... the bathroom which is still original. While this is clearly bizarre, I always encourage first timers to check out the bathroom. They don't make 'em like that anymore. I've even talked to my husband about redoing our bathroom in the Union Street style. Seriously. You should check it out. And I hear the men's bathroom is equally good! :)
Some of my favorites are the Anti-Pasta Salad the French Creme Potatoes and the macaroni and cheese. That having been said, I've never had anything there that I didn't like.
And I also agree with others that the beer is overpriced. $5 for a pint of Labatt is kind of ridiculous.
But, again, I'd definitely recommend a visit.
After the rockin' elite party, my peeps and I were in serious need of some sustenance...
Luckily, Union Street is directly across the street from Garden Bowl, and provided an unexpected, but lovely dining experience. Dark wood, vintage touches, very old-school, though upscale enough for it to feel...special? Perhaps. Comfortable.
First, the service was FANTASTIC. I wish I had caught his name, but he was genuine, helpful, funny, quick with the refills and happy to bring whatever we might need. Really well done.
Food:
Calamari app: Eh, take it or leave it. It was a bit breaded and very thick chunks of squid, but it lacked flavor. The red peppers were good, but the onions were undercooked, and um...raw onions are never a good touch. I'd skip this and try something else.
My entree: pistachio crusted salmon salad with honey mustard and cute little mozzarella balls. Very good. Adequate portion for $12, fresh, tasty. I think a different dressing may have done it more justice, as this was more like sandwich mustard, but it could certainly be tweaked to an awesome level. Very fresh.
My only tips:
1. Ditch the plastic tablecloths. They cheapen the place...wood tables, or even white linens would take this place from 4 to 5 stars, easily. The ambience is quite enjoyable, but the plastic evokes feelings reminiscent of the early bird special, bland food, and children. Not a romantastic vibe!
2. Rearrange the middle tables...angles are odd, and you end up elbow to elbow with strangers right behind you. I think there's a better way to arrange...and still maximize space!
Union Street is one of those places that I like to go to when I don't know what I want or the group has varying taste. The menu has a variety that will please most. They hours of operation don't make since to me... Saturday afternoon closed??? 1 out of 4 times I have had bad service but the one bad time wasn't that bad... just not good. The other three times the service has been great.
I must be clueless given the popularity of this place. Last night was my first visit in years and it will be my last. The server was beyond rude and if the gratuity had not been included on the bill, he would not have received one.
He refused to take drink and appetizer orders before taking dinner orders for starters. There were only a handful of us and for some unexplicable reason, he could not split the checks. To be polite, I will refer to the rest of his dealings with us as abrupt.
The food is the big reason I don't go here much. The mac and cheese lived up to my expectations, little flavor for so much cheese. The steak salad was good, which is why I am giving this joint two stars. They used good fresh spinich and they did cook the steak properly. Seasoning the steak might have helped, as would not drowining a salad in basalmic dressing but I digress.
It's a cool building with cool details and the right location in a growing part of Detroit. Someday I hope ownership realizes that a little polishing on their diner experience could go a long way!
I love this place so much. The atmosphere is friendly without feeling stodgy and the servers are all fantastic. And the food is delicious. I love everything here, although it's definitely a caloric nightmare. It's my treat restaurant, when I haven't eaten all day and can down the creamy and cheesy goodness that is their potatoes or the delicious steak or wonderful spaghetti with meat sauce.
I'd definitely suggest Union Street the next time you can handle a major meal. Oh, and park in the lot right next to it; I'm generally pretty skeptical about where I park my car, but this place is legit.
beer and dragon balls. One of the last greats in the D. head across the street for bowling art n more drinks.
The food is always good and there is a nice beer selection but the service is wavers from adequate to absolutely horrible. My wife and I ate there last night and we had contact with our server all of three times. It took over 45 mintues to get our Dragon Egg appetizer and another 40 to get our meal. In that time we blew through our ordered drinks and water and had to flag down a server from another area to get us water refills. Mind you, the room couldn't have been more than 20 percent full. Our server seemed to be more focused on the table of ten than the three other tables of two he was covering. Which I guess worked out for him since I'm sure the gratuity was automatically incuded on their bill. It sure wasn't on ours.
What it boils down to is good food, horrible service.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one who finds this place dangerously overrated. It takes 45 minutes to an hour to get a beer...God forbid you actually want a meal. The people who hang out there are a strange mix.
The food I've had has been good, although not awesome, in my opinion. The interior is beautiful. I'm just not into it.
This place is cute. The art deco ceiling is pretty neat. The place itself reminds me of old Detroit. Like a jazz bar or something. I have no idea what it was before Union Street.
I love myself a good burger and I have been on this kick lately.. It's not healthy, I know. But, I could be dead tomorrow -- so I'll do what I want. Don't judge me. Anyhow, I ordered one of the three burgers they have listed - The Boss Angus Burger. It was good, but wasn't the best I have had. Quite mediocre. One thing I was disappointed with was that my burger came with tortilla chips. I found that very strange. Typically a burger will come with fries or I wouldn't have been surprised to have seen ripple chips or regular potato chips, it's just they were Tostitos. That really thew me.
Draught beer is only a few quarters above average prices and my Blue Moon wasn't very cold.
I had the best looking server in the restaurant, so it kind of made up for the warm beer. : )
I would give this place a second try and will update this posting once I do so. I wouldn't avoid this place. Everyone else seems to love it. I just wasn't incredibly impressed.
Two things to avoid are meeting someone here by yourself - The liquor store next to the restaurant always has bums hanging out in front. & make sure you're not parking your car too far away or in a dark area.
Ok... where do I start?.. Hmm, how about the front door. Once you enter the place you're greeted by the dessert tray. EVERYTIME I see one of those trays, I want to just touch it. I know, they're fake (most of the time)... but hey, I can't resist the urge to do it. Oh well... It's a bit on the dark side and I'd say the wait staff there are pretty much college kids.
As for what to eat? I really don't eat heavy when I come here. I treat U-Street as my "get a quickie" place to eat. And my quickie has to do with the appetizers. They have a Calamari dish that I simply marvel over. Well, marvel might not be the right word but hey, I apparently enjoy it so... it's my mainstay. Maybe it's the size of the strips... they're huge and yes, I know they're "formed" and sliced.... but hey, I like the thought of eating all that battered , meaty goodness.
At any rate... the place is not a bad bet to take someone for a light dinner and possibly more. They have parking in the lot adjacent to the building (paid... so bring a couple of bucks for the attendant). One more thing... they have pretty descent burgers. And the desserts are decent. Again... it's worth a look if you find yourself near Woodward in the D.
Went again last night, the restaurant was half empty. (Should have been a warning) They, once again, did not have items on their special menu. My friend ordered a lobster and shrimp pasta....$20.00 for the entree; it was tasteless, the pasta used was, at best, Prince spaghetti. Due to the item I wanted not being available I ordered a steak sandwich, overcooked yet soggy... The waitress never checked to see if we wanted drinks and was at best "distant." Three strikes and they are OUT. I want to support restaurants in the city, but a $20.00 tasteless entree, come on now. I will never return to Union Street.

We went twice in the past week, each time the service was really lackluster. For some reason neither… Read more »
Good eatery that could be better with some additional thought. Good food. Nice atmosphere. Good late night eatery.
Union Street is by far one of the best restaurants ever! We go here for birthdays, holidays, any days...It's a good place to take even a picky eater. There is something on the menu for everyone. If you want steak or you want wings and nachos, they have it. Where else can one get Sander's bumpy cake for dessert?
There is always a good selection of beers on tap and they make some killer Irish coffee.
Sunday brunch is until 2pm and it is also fantastic! I had the Eggs Benedict and a Bellini, everything was delicious!
Don't park on the side street. I used to park there, but I stopped because there is always car window glass all over the street from break-ins. Pay the $3 and park in their lot.
Union Street is by far my favorite place to take people for good eats before a Tiger's game or on my way out of work at the DMC. I cannot say enough about the food and this restaurant/bar is a little gem in a still up and coming area in Detroit.
Detroit is working hard to build up this area and make it trendier around Wayne State and the stadiums, and Union Street is just the kind of place they need. Some of my co-workers get US cravings and frequently get fantastic, oversized carry outs as well.
Its missing the last star because of the smoky atmosphere (not that its their fault) and the price..... though worth it in my opinion, some of my out of town friends have not been impressed.
Just a quick update - Stopped in for drinks at the bar last weekend, and forgot how much I love the bar.
Rondo is frankly a fantastic bartender, I watched as he effortlessly whipped up a couple of Spanish Coffees, melting the sugared rim with flaming (what, brandy? whiskey? this is a skill best left to the professionals).
I also recall a pasta dish many years ago, linguine and fruit slices with walnuts in a gorgonzola-creme sauce. I wish this could come back to visit someday as a special.
Looking forward to future visits...

I have been a patron of Union Street for more than 20 years, and it pains me to give a negative… Read more »
We lived in midtown Detroit from late 2005 until mid-2008 and ate dinner at Union Street several times. The food was always delicious (I LOVED their seafood chowder & their baked brie) and we always had good & pleasant service. There were a few negatives, however: the noise was deafening and the cigarette smoke was a real problem (they only have a tiny non-smoking section and we always sat there [interestingly and surprisingly, we never had to wait for a table in that section]).
Wow, I'm not quite sure why people are dogging on Union Street's service. I've had a few slightly slow times, sure, but it's never been a big issue.
Union Street is a regular stop for me before a show at the Stick/Garden Bowl/Majestic, especially if friends and family are in tow. I've dined several times with my pal's grandparents and parents here -- just as many times as I've grabbed a quick bite with friends who are more my own (20s) age.
Union Street is a comfortable place for just about anyone, honestly. If you are with family or folks who have a little difficulty hearing, though, ask to sit in the room off to the side, as that is a little quieter during dinner rush.
I'm sad that the delicious Salad Nicoise seems to only have been a special, as it was the best meal I've ever had at Union Street. However, their other salads and hearty, and I always tend to stuff myself a little too much!
The brie, as someone mentioned, is a wonderful treat. And, if you're into cheese and pasta, go for the Scooby Doo. The portion is huge, so you could probably share. It's like comfort on a plate!
I wouldn't give this place a full 5 stars, but it's way up there, for quality, reliability, and being all-around comfy. I like a place where I can take friends, but also be completely comfortable with family up into their 80s!
I'm sorry that people have had bad service here, and hope that truly is the exception -- from my experience, I would say that it is.
People, people....look at the place. What are you expecting?
It is dark, strange, and damp feeling. I don't go there for the spa service.
THE ONLY REASON TO COME HERE IS THE PICKLES.
The friend pickles are the only thing I have had here aside from an OK burger. Now, I might go back every time I'm in Detroit for those pickles. I'm not even a pickle person.
Maybe if it was like a pot luck appetizer stop, people would like it?
I don't know.
I guess don't get your expectations up for dinner. It looks like the rest of the yelper's were a bit let down. I wish they had tried those pickles..... Maybe that is all they should be serving.
This place is great. I come here with family every so often for a treat, which is definitely what ordering their calamari appetizer and macaroni and cheese side is for me (along with a pint of beer from their very decent list). Consistently great service doesn't hurt, either.
Wow, I'm surprised by the negative reviews. I've been to Union Street several times and never had a bad experience.
I love the Art Deco decor and dark wood paneling with a dramatic red light illuminating the edges of the ceiling. They feature a full bar and many Michigan beers within their 100 bottled/15 on tap beer selection.
I recommend the calamari, which isn't the typical, over-fried mess with marinara sauce. It's lightly breaded and flash fried to keep the calamari firm. The lemon-wine burre blanc sauce includes capers, which complemented the taste perfectly.
Last time I went, I had a glass of an Australian Cabernet with my Balsamic Steak Salad. The latter was an excellent blend of flavors from the tart balsamic vinegar mixed with the creamy texture of Gorgonzola and the sweet bell peppers.
I didn't grow up in/around Detroit here so I don't play loyal to Detroit "landmarks".
Service with an attitude! Well, if you can get served that is.
I agree with Scott, this place is overrated. The dragonballs are honestly one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen/ate. The taco salad was of questionable origin. And the beer list doesn't make it up to me at all. Everything else is just bland, unexciting, and not worth sitting there forever while the server chats it up.
Straight up, Union Street is like Down Low brotha central. Thats probably one of the reasons I have always been so turned off by this spot.
Well, that, and that the repeated "I dont give a f---" service, average food, and the overpriced entrees, but heck, thats just me!
Union Street is another example of the piss poor service and restaurants that somehow become Detroit favorites merely due to their ability to stick and around and get a really good location.
This place pretty much sucks, but ppl continue to support it like its a Detroit landmark. Give it a rest.
This place has ruined many a date and business lunch. Ill just list the things I have had...
Appetizers-
Dragon Eggs- Out of curiousity I tried these damn things out, because frankly i liked gorgonzola cheese. Dragon Eggs, Chicken breast stuffed with Gorgonzola cheese and topped with a spicy as hell sauce, are pretty disappointing, ie: the Chef needs to be slapped for this menu item.
Rasta Wings- Way too spicy, and frankly just not that good.
Chicken wings- http://www.average.com
Steak Salad--- actually pretty good, and a cheap alternative to their super bad food.
BBq Salmon Sandwich-- not bad, not great, tasty one of the things I have gotten pretty regularly from Union Street.
Lemon Tequilla BBq Chicken-- Decent, I just expected a lot better.
So Union Street, average food, overrated by Detroiters...blah atmosphere. I really wish it was better than it really is...but its not.
I've visited this restaurant 3 times in the past year because of its location in the art district mainly. You probably should take the paid parking --they have a big lot where your car is watched. Service was always top notch here. The last time I went I got carryout and even though the place was crowded the staff found a seat for me and brought me ice water while I was waiting. They stopped by twice to give me an update on my meal.
It is an old big bar, you sit up high on a big framework of wood and brass.
I appreciate how they try to make the specials different as well as make the menu unique. They could put out the same offerings (burgers, fries, chicken wings, strips and cheesesticks) and people would probably still come. But calamari in beurre blanc sauce with capers is something people remember, and they are great here. I also tried to salmon dip appetizer. It comes with an array of water, butter and salted crackers and a generous bunch of grapes and melon. Plenty of dill and lemon was mixed in and I was so glad I tried it. Prices are affordable too.
One of my favorite places to eat! WARNING: Do not park your car on the side streets unless you want it to be stolen. Either park on Woodward or in the fenced and guarded parking lot behind Majestic across the street. My friend parked right off Woodward on a side street. Walked inside Union Street for like 5 minutes, turned around because he forgot something in his car. As he was walking back towards his car he saw it was shaking side to side. Then he sees some big black dude pop up from the driver's seat (he was trying to remove "The Club" from the steering wheel and hotwire his car.) He yelled, "Hey that's my car!" and the dude jumped out and into an adjoining getaway car where his buddy was waiting for him and peeled off.
Great beer selection, fun atmosphere.
The kitchen is open late, and if you come here regularly enough, they'll remember you face. Just that little extra effort makes me love this place.
The baked brie is excellent, so is the steak salad (which is a bargain on the lunch menu) and as mentioned before, if there is a beer you want that is not on their list, you probably made it up.
My only complaint is to not come with a large group, or if you do, make sure everyone has cash. We've come a couple times with a big group and the credit cards get overcharged/mischarged. It usually gets straightened out, but it's just kind of a hassle.
Great service...you better go when you are hungry...Life is too short to drink cheap beer...
Full disclosure: I am friends with several employees at Union Street, including management, wait staff, bartenders, and kitchen staff. But I am not an employee, and never have been.
With that being said, I need to clarify some things that other reviewers may not have realized. The extent of the restaurant's menu far exceeds that of 'bar food' or "fatty, creamy, fried foods."
The entree-sized salads are excellent and enormous. Some can be ordered in half-sizes, and you may want to go that route if you don't want a lot of leftovers. The choices range from traditional taco salad to a pistachio-encrusted salmon salad.
Their signature snack is the Dragon Eggs. The dish is three chicken breasts, each stuffed with gorgonzola cheese, then battered and deep-fried, then tossed in a serious hot sauce. These three 'eggs' are served on top of a caesar salad.
They have a newer appetizer that I highly recommend called the Black Angus Beef Satay. It's a meal in itself with several pieces of Black Angus steak skewered and marinated (Thai style) along with a small seared spinach salad atop creole rice pilaf.
The sandwich selection is diverse with plenty of choices for vegetarians and meat-eaters. My favorite is the Manchego Bistro Steak sandwich. Yes, I love steak. The Spanish Manchego cheese is a perfect pairing with the steak and caesar mayo.
While the snacks, appetizers, and side dishes are all excellent, I think the entrees are where Union Street really shines. This is far from bar food with Black Angus filets, lobster with spinach fettucine, baked crab stuffed salmon, a roasted vegetable lasagna, as well as many more choices.
As noted in other reviews, the beer list is extensive. I am constantly being introduced to new selections there. My current favorite is Rodenbach's Red Bach. It's a Flemish sour ale blended with a little bit of cherry juice. It's not too sweet, not too sour. And if the Chimay or Tsing Tao is too expensive or exotic for you, there are plenty of domestics.
The desserts come from local (Royal Oak) restaurant/bakery Pronto, but my favorite is when they have their own white chocolate mousse with tons of shavings of white chocolate layered with the mousse.
Portions are huge, prices are decent, and good variety. The bartenders have personality, the space has a history, and Midtown Detroit would not be the same without it.
I went to Union Street for the first time today. A friend who is a regular here suggested it. I am big on recommendations so I wanted to try it.
It's right on Woodward and they have a big parking lot in the back. The interior is really nice and casual. Right when you walk in you can see the delicious desserts on display. And if you decide to sit at a table vs. the bar you will notice the cool artwork on the ceiling of the restaurant.
Now here is the best part, the food! I tried the famous "dragon eggs", which is deep fried chicken stuffed with cheese and covered with a spicy sauce. I don't know who thought of this, but it was so good and creative. I loved it.
I also had the clam chowder and crab cakes which were both pretty good. And so far they have the best macaroni cheese I have tried in a restaurant. The macaroni was cooked with the cheese (I think there was a bit of egg in ti), and then was baked with melted cheese on top.
I wish I had room for dessert! But I left totally satisfied and I'm coming back.
A Detroit institution. In a good way. Always a carefully selected variety of different beers. The calamari is one of a kind. A great room and vibe, all around.
Note: There will be a slightly-crazed, but generally harmless panhandler near the entrance.
Great Cesar's Ghost!
Hands down, the best Steak Salad I've ever had, and by far the best Calamari I've ever had. I honestly don't know how they do it!
A must for any visitor to Detroit! Highly recommended!
I love Union Street. Service is excellent, and the food is top-notch - creative comfort food with a twist. The spinach dip is awesome and if you like spicy, try a dragon egg. Portions are huge and the prices are low.
They also order all their desserts from Pronto - hello Pumpkin Cheesecake, Bumpycake and Diva Cake!
Union Street also catered my wedding - the guests RAVED about the food. The beef wellingtons and goat cheese napoleons were to die for. Jack was so awesome and accomodating with multiple menu revisions and tastings. Everything came off on the big day perfectly!
Standard favorite. I always search the menu and the specials and end up getting the Dragon's Eggs. A house specialty. Chicken breasts stuffed with Gorgonzola cheese and deep fried. Three huge balls on a big salad for just about $10. Great bar, standard hang out.
A lot of people seem to love this place. But for me, food has been OK. I like the Art Deco-style ceiling. An extensive beer list is nice. But overall, it's just OK...
Art Deco beer lovers may have a good time here.
whoa whoa whoa.
I am shocked at everyone's reviews about the service. The server I had tonight was incredibly nice-- shoot son, I thought he was going to ask if he could sit with us.. and to be honest, I wouldn't have minded. SO so nice!
I love that Union carries Ghettoblaster beer. I introduced it to a friend tonight and I think she may cheat on Bell's Oberon now and she is a tough tree to shake as far as drink options.
We ordered the Roasted Garlic and Portabella app-- oh good gracious. The goat cheese rolled in lightly toasted almonds. Need I say more?
French fries- a must. They look like the potato-y steak fries, but are fried to perfection.
The Chicken Kung Pao salad... eh... you can go on living your life NOT having tried this salad.. something about warm stuff on lettuce.. eeew... not a fan of hot lettuce. It sounds good, but just pick something else.
I heard the beef brisket (a special) is fab. Check it out, and don't hate on the wait staff.
I have ate here alot in the past 9 years... and I must say the go to dishes are the Dragons Eggs, the soups and hands down the Filet Mignon. Get the sauce on the side as not to hinder the beautifully cooked meat.
Union Street has awesome food. I'd recommend everything I've had there: macaroni & cheese, cajun chicken sandwich, gumbo . . . it's all really good. Regarding restaurants in Midtown, for my money it's better than Majestic or Atlas.
