My new favorite hole in the wall.
Offers a large variety of vegetarian and vegan hotdogs (the vegan one I had today is tastier than most meat hotdogs I've ever had).
100% of what they offer (including the condiments!) is all natural, non-GMO, and certified organic.
And they have a bunch of life-affirming (ok, hippy) posters on the wall that make me smile -

Anyone who can turn this CARNIwhore into a VEGAN LOVING sausage eater is a TOPdog in my book!
Only in a city that popularized the hippie culture, would you find an eco-friendly establishment serving ALL ORGANIC Hot Dog, Sausages, Snacks and Drinks. With over 13 Meat and 6 Vegetarian/Vegan (non-GMO soy) varieties, Underdog has a sausage that will satisfy everyone's palate.
Looking for healthier food options, I came by Underdogs last night after running after-work errands. Having an affinity for meat is an understatement. I sleep and breathe meat and MUST have a serving at least twice a day. However, with the rave reviews of the vegan sausages, I decided to give it a shot.
As suggested by the friendly employee, I ordered the Vegan Smoked Chipotle Sausage on a Wheat Bun (white or gluten-free corn tortilla is also available). Within several minutes, I had a piping hot brown package in my hands begging to be topped and devoured.
With all organic condiments, I excitedly decorated my sausage with onions, relish, mustard and ketchup.

VEGAN SMOKED CHIPOTLE SAUSAGE ($4.29)
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
The hot toasty bun held the sausage and its accoutrements tightly together. Sinking my teeth into the hand-held package, I got a crispness from the bread before my taste buds hit the premiere event. The vegan chipotle sausage had a surprisingly mouth-watering meat-like texture and was full of tantalizing spices with a hint of smokiness. With the raw onions, relish, mustard, and ketchup, it created an explosive flavor and textural sensation.
PARTY ROCK IN MY MOUTH! *WOOT*
Ermm, that did not sound right. :T

Just tried this place and I'm impressed with the fact everything is organic. However the sausages are whatever.
The wheat bun is nice. but its hard to make it a favorite just because of the organic factor. i wouldn't go out of the way just to try this, but if it were down the block, its range of special items on the sausage menu does seem appealing.
When I came in and tried the Portuguese, I thought it was flavorful but not extraordinary. It didn't strike me as anything different from a regular bratwurst or italian sausage. The tray of condiments was a nice touch, but still.....I think the competition with Top Dog and Rosamunde is still overshadowing this joint. Something needs to change....but what? -

I was craving something fatty and meaty after my massage and my thoughts immediately sprung to hot dogs (get yo' mind outta the gutter).
A great little colorful hole in the wall, if you're not paying attention you could walk right by it. They have lots of meat alternative options and organic sides ::cough cough:: tater-tots but obviously I came for the hot dogs.
After a debate between the classic all beef underdog and the pork Italian - spicy won out. Honestly it wasn't that spicy and kinda small for $4.70 I could buy a pack at TJ's but it was good and I liked all the natural organic sides especially the homemade horseradish sauerkraut.
I'll be back if in the area craving a hot dog again. I think I'll be getting the "Let's be frank" looks big enough to satisfy this girl. ;) -

I adore this place. I drive 45 minutes just for their vegan dogs (of which there are more than 5 flavors!) This place just can't be beat. Even with a line, I never wait more than 10 minutes for my food. They have all sorts of healthy and not-so-healthy organic treats and drinks, as well as vegan 'slaw, pie, and potato salad. The employees are friendly and authentic (I once witnessed an Underdog employee reading "Jane Eyre," which, believe me, says a lot about the kind of people Underdog hires.) I've been to the famous Pink's down in LA, and they have nothing on Underdog.

This place is great, if you are in somewhat of a hurry and happen to be in the area. A friend of mine and I always stop here on the way back from wine country. There about six different choices for "vegan dogs" and I've tried two. Can't exactly remember which ones (it's difficult after wine tasting the night and day before...). You can have it wrapped in a tortilla or on a whole grain wheat roll. There are the standard hot dog toppings available sauerkraut, relish, ketchup and 2-3 varieties of mustard to choose from. Sides are their ultra-yummy potatoes or coleslaw. They also have several different healthy beverages to chose from like Green Tea Kombucha...and so on. Yummm..

Big props for wanting to be green and having a wide selection for different taste. Prices are fairly decent for hot dogs, but maybe its just me but I don't see much of a difference for the higher price. The place is worth trying if your in the area, but I wouldn't make a trip out of it.

Good hotdogs, love them. I would prefer buy them raw (only $2.50) and cook them at home. $5 for a hot dog seems a bit expensive.

The shop is small, two tables and sits 6 altogether. Workers here are nice and laid back. Organic dogs and condiments is a cool concept but I do like my dogs fatty. When I eat a dog, I am suppose to feel guilty, not so much here.

Had one of the worst experiences here... Tried to enjoy a beer with some friends and some local/regular guy named Marcello who all the bartenders favored Damn near got us kicked out And to his colleague named Brad kept instigating and provoking dude to keep starting stuff with us and talking his smack!! Lame. Seriously how old are you?? Only best part is when I asked to close out the tab for my boy... The bartender cleared the tab and comped everything and apologized for all the trouble we experienced. Good customer service I guess once you heard put side of It before knowing your facts

I really like hot dogs. This place has the most delicious hot dogs I have ever tasted. The dog itself tasted like really great beef, and the skin on the hot dog was not too tough, and not too soft. The buns are toasted to perfection before the hot dog is served. There are vegan options, and the organic hot peppers sauce is extremely tasty on everything. The tater tots are a great compliment, but don't expect the portion to fill you up, it's just a side- that is the job of the hot dog.
The owners are totally awesome. Extremely inviting, and very appreciative of all of their customers. I was really impressed and happy to have met them. The atmosphere of the shop is really fun.
I am really looking forward visiting Underdog again as soon as I get another chance. -

I LOVE Underdogs! My friend introduced me to the place a while back, and since then it's been a favorite! I'm usually not a fan of hot dogs, but their Chili Vegan Dog is AH-MAZING! I also don't feel to bad about about self knowing it's organic and good for me!
On a sunny day, I love taking the short walk to Golden Gate Park to sit on the grass and eat my Hot Dog and Tater Tots! On rainy days, I love sitting in this hole-of-a-wall shops and trying to play a game of Extreme Rock Paper scissors with my friend (with their awesome posters to guide us, of course!) -

I finally went here after reading the reviews for a couple of years.
I thought it was ok. Nothing extremely special. I'm sure if I got the normal dog with a bun and all the fixings I would have absolutely loved it, but due to my elimination diet all I could order was the chicken-dog without a bun even though they had a gluten-free tortilla, I am off corn right now. So I'm reviewing just the chicken dog.
The chicken dog wasn't anything crazy different than the ones I buy at Whole Foods. In fact, it was a little dry. What was really yummy was their house mustards. That was delicious and helped the dog taste juicier. I also tried the tater tots and they weren't as crispy as they could have been.
One day when I'm cheating I'll try the superdog with everything on it. -

I had been meaning to try this place for months, and finally had the opportunity to buy some sausages. Ordered 8 different dogs, including a vegan dog for a vegetarian friend. Grilled them at a BBQ and everyone was amazed at how delicious the sausages were. My favorite was the portuguese dog, nice and spicy. (I love spicy food.)
The staff was very friendly and fast to turn out the sausages. Looking forward to coming back and sitting down to eat. -
Review from Katie T.
While I wholeheartedly love the idea of Underdog (organic, simple, junk food), I am less enthusiastic about a few points of execution.
The dogs and buns are both a little on the dry side. I don't particularly mind the bun being dry. It makes sense because it's pretty unadorned when you get it (you dress it up yourself with their ketchup, mustard, onions, and sauerkraut bar). But I like my sausages pretty juicy, and for whatever reason, even their meat links have that weirdly dry vegan-dog soy-protein texture.
The tater tots get a lot of talk on Yelp, but they were just regular old tater tots and seemed really expensive for how many you get (a very small handful per order).Listed in: Where the Sun Sets

We have been meaning to go to Underdogs since moving down the street about a year ago. I LOVE hot dogs so I was super excited. The kid working there was super friendly and gave his recommendations. My husband got the Brat and the Italian and I got the Sweet Italian. Overall they were just ok. They were not super flavorful and didn't seem different from other prepackaged brats and sausages that I've bought before at the grocery store. Also, the buns were nothing special and were super dry. With all of that said, they were not bad. Just ok. We will probably go again and try different dogs.

I would give this place more than 5 stars if I could. I am following a strict gluten-free diet and was craving a hot dog. Never thought I could fill the craving. I i will come all the way from Pacifica to this place. The gluten free buns rock!

Review from Emily D.
My brother and his gf picked me up, telling me we were going to a festival and getting sausages. I assumed that meant Oktoberfest.....
But no, it meant vegan sausages at Underdog and the SF World Veg festival with a bunch of hippies.
I ordered the vegan bratwurst to try to salvage my Deutsch fantasy. It was pretty good for a vegan sausage. It did taste close to the real thing, but not at all like the real thing because the real thing is like eating a rainbow.
The store itself exacerbated my claustrophobia. And I still have no effing clue what the RPS wallpaper was about. So weird. -

This place is amazing. I'm pregnant and have been craving hot dogs since day 1, but studies say I can't have hot dogs because of the nitrates and all the other unhealthy crap that is in them. Well, this place is not only organic, nitrate-free, but it is also delicious! Very clean establishment with a very friendly staff. So glad this place is changing fast food!

this place is the bomb.... It feels like you are entering a place in amsterdam.... This is probly one of the only establishments you can go in the city, and always here good music....
why is that so hard?
And, the hot sauce that they make, with multiple peppers, is one of the single most tastey things in the city...
Im a veggie eater, so I have tried most of their veggie and vegan sausages.... Pretty bomb...
Gotta say, the wheat free bun that was just added, is really good too.... hard to believe that its wheat free... -

There's a phrase that is often overused. "That's a damn good brat!"
It's often misapplied when referring to some soggy, weiner shaped thing that came from a Costco freezer or you got for free by showing your Giants ticket at Safeway after Timmeh strikes out 13 batters the night before.
Oh no... this is a fantastic bratwurst. Underdog bratwursts demand you use the full name. They're just that good. Superior bite, full of flavor. All on a hearty, toasted roll. You could garnish with plenty of organic toppings like relish or ketchup. No! Sauerkraut only.
Worth noting... they're on the small side, but they're also inexpensive enough where buying two isn't a big deal. Also, the space inside is small - only a couple tables, but these are walkin' foods anyway.
My only regret - I wish I noticed the tots on the menu before I was done and on my way out. -
Review from Rich L.
What makes this place deserve 5 stars from me? First, they are all organic with all their ingredients from the sausage down to the condiments provided. Secondly, they serve TATOR TOTS!!!!! Eating tator tots is sooo nostalgic for me and it just so happens that my elementary school is right across the street. Lastly, the staff is great and friendly.
I usually order at least two dogs but I would recommend ordering one to start out with and see how you like it. I always go with the chicken apple sausage with tator tots.
Food Highlight: Chicken Apple Sausage with TATOR TOTS! -

South San Francisco, CA
Definitely a hole-in-the-wall place. Seating area, if it can be called that, has room for 8 people. I love how I could order my dog on a corn tortilla (gotta watch those carbs!) and there were four varieties of mustard.
They even have good reading material and some interesting card games. All organic dogs, very affordable. Can't wait to go back! -

Organic, vegan, etc- great.
Selling point: It's a damn good brat!
I got a Portuguese (Smoked pork with white wine and garlic) and the meat was so delicious... the bun was toasty and tasty! Great variety of condiments and just satisfying when you want a good brat.
It's a small, cafe-style joint, so I found it best to buy it and take a walk down Irving St. Definitely a go! -

SF isn't really known for hot dogs but I gotta say Underdog makes a case for being the favorite for being the cities #1 hot dog joint.
- Vegan/Vegetarian menu (sausages made w/soy)
- All organic meats and spices.
- Wheat buns
- Plus the people working there had that super friendly vegan vibe and made some great recommendations.
Ordered the Portuguese - $4.29 - Smoked pork w/ white wine and garlic. Delicious. Didn't get much wine flavor but it tasted really good with their organic dijon mustard. Surprisingly didn't taste like linguica.
Their let's be frank dog - local grass fed all beef hot dog - $4.61 - Super beefy flavor and had that snap! The dog extends past the bun!
Delicious, hole in the wall, SF hot dog eats.Listed in: Unique Eats : Bay Area, Bargain bites

San Francisco, CA
There are so many choices! In the end, I ordered the Underdog (their standard all-beef hot dog) and an order of tater tots. Both were pretty decent, but not super spectacular. The Underdog was a standard size dog, and I noticed the guy next to me ordered two dogs/sausages, so maybe that is the typical order.
Inside is really cool. There is a lot of things to read, but note that there is VERY limited seating inside. If you have a group, you will most likely not fit. There is also a nice variety of condiments, beyond the standard ketchup, mustard, and relish.
I will be back to sample some other flavors. I really appreciate their passion to cater to organic/vegetarian tastes, and their foods are labeled accordingly. For what they serve (quality-wise), the price is reasonable. -

TASTY. I had the spicy Italian with kraut and the horseradish mustard. I was hungry enough to warrant the tater tots, but looking forward to them for next time.
The decor in this place is artistic and funky, they have books for you to read while you eat your dog, and the server was wonderfully friendly. A perfect summer stop. I'm definitely going back to try all the dogs (yes, even the vegan ones).
They are a little more expensive, but I thought the taste warranted it. -

BF had "Let's Be Frank" and I got the "Underdog" Mine was tasty, I definitely loved my dog but could care less for the bun. BF felt differently! He loved bun and was so-so on the dog. We also got tater-tots. I haven't had them since middle school and I can't remember them being as dry.
Staff was extremely friendly, especially for working on Labor Day, and I really appreciate that. I think I'll be back only if I'm in the neighborhood and craving for hotdogs. -

If suddenly you heard the hiss of airbrakes being released and with the walls shaking a little around you this place picked up and rolled off - being in fact the back end of a big hauler - you might not be too surprised.
The menu is like the space - pretty small - and I guess could be called (junior aged) comfort food in a comfy-squeeze space (more or less comfort food for kids - fancy hot dogs without too much weird stuff stuffed into them as my son reckons).
Really, the whole deal here is - you walk in pop a dog in your yapper and move along and it "feels good". Good dog on average bread with some tasty fixin's if you want 'em.
Once, just once, the quality seemed to be a little inconsistent. So I'm keeping an eye on them. Looks like kids (maybe a batch or two of months older than teenagers at best) so there is more potential for fly-by-night behavior beyond the food-truck-without-wheels theme.
PS: 1960s on the walls is so generic that you just read through it to the paint without assuming it has any meaning (maybe it had, but that was a long time ago). As are the additional snack items. They should just serve beer with a high-percent alcohol content. -

Walked in on a sunday late afternoon thinking this would be a good place to try. Place was not busy, only one other customer.
Ordered the Portugese and Italian. For the price I thought the hotdogs would offer a lot more, but it was something you could probably get at safeway and cook it yourself at home. It was around $5 each for it wasn't really worth it and it wasn't really anything special.
I would rather pay for $2 more for a PINK's hotdog or pay less for a Costco hotdog. Both would be worth what you get.
The only upside it that they offered non-beef hotdogs thats why I gave them an extra star, if not I would have left it at one. -

I found this place randomly when my bf was getting a haircut next door. I wandered in because I saw all the chalk on the sidewalk and I was like .. cooool what is this?! I never thought I'd like Vegan dogs but SO DELICIOUS!!!!
The service was very fast even though there is just one person working. She was very helpful in helping me choose which one to try. This place has to be my #1 favorite hot dog joint. -

Awesome place to get vegan hot dogs. Everything my family and I got was really good, and I always appreciate cafes/food venues that care about the environment and have compostable forks and napkins from recycled paper, and that sort of thing.
It's SUPER tiny--there are literally two tables in a narrow eating area and that's it. So if people are already there you're screwed!
Minus one star because they refuse to let customers use their bathroom (which I swear is against the law, but who knows?!), but the library is across the street and you can use that one.
Hot dogs were very good and I will go back! -

I was driving down the street from my work, when I saw a this small spot. I had to check it out and I'm glad I did. The place has a great feeling to it as it promotes alternatives, being green..
Anyways, I had got the Apple sage!!! and it was better than what I expected.
They have a wide variety of different hotdogs as well as snacks (local and commercial).
The service was very fast, but there was only 1 person working.. I could only imagine how busy it gets in there!!!
I had a great experience here, and I will be back often! -

San Francisco, CA
A place that serves vegan hot dogs??? Might as well shave your handle bar mustache prior to Movember, right? Well it's not a total oxymoron. It's actually legit and being a typical meat eater, I took a vegan challenge for a few weeks and found myself at Underdog and very happy. It's a small shop that has a great vibe. I had the regular Underdog with all the fixin's and I'd definitely go back and try some of the others. If my Chicago friends are still reading, this guy does hand make meat sausages... so don't write him off completely. He may not be the next Hot Doug's but he is trying to make encased meat in a responsible way. I give him mad respekt!

Underdog is a seriously cool little place to get your grub on. The only drawback is that they're cash only, but one of their dogs is worth a trip to the ATM.
My gf and I split the fire-roasted pepper chicken dog (cuz we only had 5 bucks), but man was it good. I love all the condiments that are available there, the hole-in-the-wall atmosphere, and the loud reggae music playing. Not to mention the dude who is usually working the counter is way chill.
This place is a definite gem in the Inner Sunset...oh and they have a stand at the Farmer's Market every Sunday! What's not to love?
