Hot dogs, buns, condiments, snacks. All organic. All delicious.

What a find. Normally healthy/veggie hot dog options are few and far between. Not here. It was hard deciding between the beer bratwurst and the cranberry apple, but the latter won out because it sounded unlike anything I have ever had before. It was absolutely outstanding, made even better coming on a wheat bun and costing me less than $5. Plus those organic condiments for toppings.

One of the best hot dog experienced I've ever had.

You don't have to be a hippy to fall in love with the underdog.

Imagine a single car garage sized restaurant where red eyed stoners and local police harmoniously share a common interest: The Best Hot Dogs Ever.

Everyone loves this Sunset gem.   I've always felt good energy and  the hot dog slingers are down to earth and super friendly.

Everything you don't eat is Eco-Friendly  and everything you do is strictly Organic so it does cost more than weinchnitzel, though it's not a fair comparison.

To sum it up: It's a Foodie's Hot Dog.

Whether you want an all Vegan meal or a damn good sausage the Underdog  will not disappoint.

Usually vegetarian/vegan hotdog or sausage options are quite lackluster...not the case at Underdogs!

The best vegan sausage I have ever had.

I like that they offer sauerkraut as a free condiment but it's very basic; however, I enjoyed it on my dog nonetheless.

The whole experience was nice and casual. I loved all the decor on the walls, whether they were Snapple caps, funny posters, or bumper stickers.

It's the perfect place to grab a quick bite.

I guess it should be awarded 5 stars if your someone that's really passionate about organic food. Everything right down to the gummy worms and soda that they sell is organic. As for me, as much as I wanted to like this place I couldn't help but feel like "geez I paid 4 bucks for this?". Maybe I ordered the wrong hot dog (got the bratwurst), the bun was toasted too long and was cracked and hard once I received it and the sausage was dry. Lengthwise it was probably the size of my ipod. On a lighter note..I loved all the posters on the walls and the place was pretty neat and clean, which is a quality I find missing from most of your hole-in-the-wall places.

I don't know how I can give a hot dog shop 5 stars, but Underdog deserves it.  I came here for the first time last week after work.  I had their "Let's Be Frank" big beef hot dog and it was very tasty.  Had a different taste than something like the Hebrew Nationals at Costco.  The beef flavor really popped out with my first bite.  I haven't tried their Vegan Hot Dogs yet, but I'll give them a try in a future visit.  Hopefully it'll be soon!

Mmm, just had my first experience at Underdog, and it was a good one. The bun was lightly toasted, yet soft, a perfect compliment to the Garlic and Herb Pork dog that I chose from the lengthy list of meat and vegetarian sausages. I've got to say, their potato salad is certainly some of the best i've ever had. I'll be back...

yummy, i really like this place!!  they have so many different vegan/veg sausages available, and they are grilled to order.  i got the apple sage, and the hubby got the vegetarian apple cran (difference b/t vegan and veg options is that the vegetarian ones have egg white as a binder), and both were yummy.  there are a bunch of different organic mustards, hot sauce, saurkraut, relish, onions to top your sausage, and they are all good.  i LOVED the baked tater tots also.  i can't wait to try more sausages here.

the thing that sux with veg sausages is that you are never going to get that snap that a regular sausage has due to the casing, so if there was a way to replicate that, that would be awesome.

Who would have known a hot dog could be so good?

Every time I come to this place I try to get something new and I have never been disappointed with a single dog. I think even the vegetarian/vegan dogs are delicious and I am a proud carnivore.

Although the shop is small, it is very cute and full of life. There are plenty of books to read and they even have games for people to play around with. It's a unique experience and a definite gem for the sunset district.

This place has great organic hot dogs and sausages! They even offer whole wheat organic buns! What's not to like..well besides the lack of parking?! Way better than "Pinks" in LA.

The hubby and I went here last week after our school final. We ordered the hot link, the garlic sausage and a regular beef dog for our little dog. All of them were equally delicious but I think no one enjoyed one more than our Shih Tzu mix, Benji!

BTW..they also offer some killer tasting vegan potato salad! Just remember to bring CASH with you!!

In looking for a comfort food dining experience, I stumbled across this place on-line.
Located on Irving @ 18th Ave, it is a small and brightly lit 2 table grub hub.
I haven't yet had a dog I have been disappointed in, with my six visits so far.  The tots aren't greasy and the homemade pies are delicious.
The staff are friendly and peaceful.
Fun decor keeps you entertained while you wait for your hot dog.
I was also excited to discover their stand at the Inner Sunset farmer's market on 9th @ Irving, where they sell desserts and sausages.  The best part is that there are options for every diet; vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore.
Down side- does not accommodate groups of 8 or more.

Yum!  We had the classic vegan dogs, tater tots and a bottled lemonade.
The dogs were grilled perfectly and so tasty with the condiments we piled on them (mustard, onions, relish and sauerkraut).  I love that there were 3 kinds of mustard to choose from, ketchup, onions, relish and sauerkraut--all self service.  Which is great for me since I just like a wee bit of mustard, medium amount of relish and a ton of onions and sauerkraut.

The tater tots were baked to a crispy perfection!  Hard to believe they are oven-baked!  I didn't miss the oil!

Staff was sweet and friendly.  They laughed when we replied to their question, "How's your food?"..........."MMMM   ..... sooooo good!"

Drawbacks.....teeny tiny inside.  Only room for 6 people.  We went on a weekday afternoon, so no lines.   No bathroom but shhhhh we went to the Andronicos a few blocks away.

Definitely a new fan!

Best place for hot dogs/sausages! They have a good selection of vegan sausages to choose from! I love the vegan bratwurst! I love the spices! I usually order them with the tater tots and it'll fill me up. I will feel full but not overwhelmingly full which is good! A friend of mine loves the Vegan dog but i have yet to try it. I believe the majority of the products are organic!

The customer service is great! They are extremely friendly and they're so easy to talk to! It's a very hole in the wall type place but i love it. There are pictures and artwork hanging everywhere. Andre 3000 of Outkast (he's vegan btw!) came into this location and they have a picture with him hanging on their fridge behind the counter!! hella cool!! They have a collection of tea caps that have been put on the wall that having different sayings. When i finished my tea one time i put my cap on the wall as well and it's cool to see it every time i come back. They're very environmentally conscious in terms of recycling and compost bins!

They're CASH ONLY so make sure that you come prepared! I usually get a vegan sausage with tater tots and an iced tea... i don't think i've ever spent more than $10 here. just to give you an idea.

Alright I finally went to Underdog after hearing all the rave about it. I LOVE WEINERS! LOVE! So I was very excited. I got the Spicy one with jalapenos and peppers and also tator tots. Ok first of all the hotdog was not grilled, I saw her put my hotdog in a toaster to cook. Then my tators were also stuck in the toaster and a bit burnt. When I got my hotdog, I was thinking oh wow this is small! I thought it would be a nice big filling sausage for how much I paid for it. The sausage tasted good but nothing special, oh and it was not spicy at all. The tators were not amazing, I could have gotten a whole bag of frozen ones and made it myself for the same price. Hmmm well overall it was just OK.
I prefer a sausage from the Haight Street Fair! MMMMM...

"Underdog," not to be confused with the sports bar "Underdogs", is a cute hole-in-the-wall on Irving.  Both places are about 1-2 blocks away from each other and its easy to get confused. Luckily "Underdogs" changed their name to "The taco shop at Underdogs." One time my friends and I were at Underdogs and another friend came to *this place* instead. It was pretty funny at the time. But I digress...

They have some organic hotdogs up in here! Its definitely better than Fatt Dog. I ordered their chicken apple ($3.99) and some "potator" tots ($2.99). The hotdog was good and those tator tots are pretty addicting! I'm sure those tots were laced with crack. I couldn't stop eating them!

I like this place. The workers are very friendly and nice. I'll be back but at the same time I have to stay away. This place might make me fat!

They have some of the best dogs in town. Top 3, possibily top 1.
This simple place also have some tasty tater tots.
I had the Portuguese Sausage, which was  smoked pork with white wine and fresh garlic. Quality and flavor.

Though this place has been getting a lot of buzz from the vegan community, it is not to be missed by the staunch carnivore (and here I shall raise my hand). Order the Bratwurst, which snaps satisfactorily with every bite. (Be good and order it on a whole wheat bun.) And their baked tater tots and garlic potato salad demand sampling.

The walls are covered in feel-good propaganda and you may leave learning more than you wanted about Ultimate Rock Paper Scissors (google it), but you'll leave feeling better than when you came in. Doesn't hurt that the foreign guy behind the counter is adorable too.

I praise the higher powers that my boyfriend's is but a block away from this hole-in-the-wall heaven. The chicken andouille is so very, very good. Technically I could enjoy its fabulous flavor sans toppings, but I can't help choosing from their assortment of organic condiments (... plus I am a mustard junkie and they offer like three!). The one thing I would like to see is a better bun -- and here I hate to draw out comparisons, especially with a competitor that shares a name quite similar to Underdog's -- but perhaps a nice toasted roll could pair nicely with the awesome sausages served here. Still, YUM.

Went here last night for a hot dog.  I got the Italian, because it seemed like Top Dog's calabrese, and it ended up being pretty good.  The relish is an odd color, but i guess that's because that (and everything else) is organic. The stone ground mustard was pretty good as well.

I'd say overall, the sausage was not grilled as nicely as Top Dog does it, and the bun was a bit wonderbread style, but it tasted good nonetheless.

The total came out to 4.37 for just the hot dog, which is pretty expensive for a hot dog, so make sure you pile up the ingredients to get your moneys worth =D.

Oh yea, make sure you play a game of Extreme Rock Paper Scissors while you're waiting, it's super fun.

I LOVE this PLACE.  I don't live close to the city, but hell, I will make any excuse to come out to the city just to visit this joint.

The service is friendly, the place is extremely clean.
The food is organic, even the tater tots, and most of the condiments are homemade (the relish and sauerkraut for example).

Now, not being a meateater, you don't come across a very good hotdog that often.. well ever. But their vegan dogs are OUT OF THE FRIGGIN WORLD. My Fiance had to keep asking me, are you sure they didnt give me a meat dog? Because it was SO GOOD and didn't taste like a log of tofu!!!

Now I want another one :(.

An organic hot dog?! Really? Wow... ok maybe that intro didn't get you all excited but after the countless amount of hot dogs I have consumed in my life it was only natural that I had to check this place out one day. Don't get me wrong, any substitute for real meat in my mind is horrible (sorry to those vegetarians reading this out there but I'm a die hard meat lover) but after a friend suggested this place I went to check it out. Even though the place is like a hole in the wall being able to fit maybe 10 people at most at any given time the place was quite nice. It vibe I got was cool and comfortable and it was located in a less busy part of Irving as well.

The food itself was quite good. I didn't get a massive taste of grease or feel the need to yack afterwards which is alaways a good sign. I feel bad that I only gave this place 4 stars when so many people gave it a perfect score but even with that said I am just not use to organic foods. Maybe that's because the majority of society has grown up eating unhealthy foods and have never considered an alternative, or maybe it's because no matter how I tried to ignore it, there was an aftertaste that I noticed after every bite of the brat. Compare this place with Top Dog in Berkeley or Pinks in LA and this place is much more healthy. I would not mind coming back here again with my friends as this is one of the only "true" hot dog shops in the city. All very reasonably priced as well which is always a good thing.

Most dogs are $3.99 and you have a choice of 12 of them.  I tried the "Bratwurst" this time.  It was good, but a little dry, not fatty at all.  Don't expect gushy, greasy oil to pour out of their dogs when you bite into it.  The dogs are organic, so they're leaner.  I did feel really thirsty a couple of hours later and couldn't tell if it was from the organic mustards (deli style, Dijon and yellow), sauerkraut or the dog.  The tater tots didn't taste as good today.  It can add up when you order a dog and tots ($2.49).  For 2 of us, it came to $18 for 2 dogs and 2 tots, no drinks.  Jr. Yelper had the chicken apple dog and said it was "Good!"

They have quite a selection of organic drinks.  Brands I've never heard of:   Lakewood, Sweet Leat, Blue Sky, Steaz and there's also Calistoga flavored water.
If you want vegan, they have 6 choices and 4 vegetarian sausages.  Your choice of white or wheat bun and you help yourself to the tiny condiment bar (onions, sauerkraut, relish, mustards, ketchup - all organic).  How good is it?  Jr. Yelper turned down all my suggestions to eat at other places and waited patiently for me to drive back from the Richmond dist. just to have their dog.
Friendly Rizza was working by herself again, so do expect a wait for your order.  They have organic cookies, candies and Gladcorn, $3.00 for a 4 oz bag.  Yes, it's pricey, but tastes like puffed corn nuts and are so good.

Being Vegetarian, I don't normally get to eat Hot Dogs, so this was truly special.  Underdog has a whole variety of vegetarian dogs and they were amazing.  Between a group of us, we tried the chipotle, italian and apple sage veggie dogs.  All of them were amazing.

They also have an option of whole wheat buns, which made it even better.  And, they have a huge selection of mustards... yum!

The service was the cherry on top... very friendly.

If you like or crave hot dogs, this is the place.  I've been going back regularly since I first discovered this place about four months ago.

I always get either the Underdog or the Garlic Dog, and the Tater Tots.  Always consistently good and tasty.  And the condiment bar is always stocked with fresh onions, and homemade relish and sauerkraut, and a variety of mustards, all organic.

Service is always very pleasant and friendly.

Price is reasonable considering the natural, organic quality of the food.

Local, friendly, independent, and good quality - what San Francisco food should be!

I love this hole in the wall. Its great for a quick lunch, and something different  - well different for irving street.

I've only tried a few hot dogs - and cant remember the names , but they were all great. You must get the tater tots with the dogs! It's probly the same frozen ones you buy at safeway, but yumm...they go good with the hotdogs.

Really special place.  I like the organic/eco-conscious vibe of the place but that wouldn't count for much if the hot dogs were not great...and they are!

Whether you are carnivorous, vegetarian, or vegan they will have something really tasty for you.  If this place was located in a more happening neighborhood there would be a line around the block.  As it is it remains a semi-well kept secret and local treasure.

wowweeeee what a truly inspired concept and delicious product -- organic sausages (and as a vegetarian I get to eat them with gusto)!

Four of us came for lunch today and LOVED it...  the vegan apple sage sausage topped with onions and stoneground mustard accompanied by crisp potater-tots.  I can't wait to try the entire menu of organic vegetarian and vegan sausages!

Also, Rizza, the brilliant person behind the counter was warm, friendly and just straight up cool!  I want to spend my money here to support a business whose mission and vision is in alignment with my own values which supports this planet!

There is something so satisfying about biting into a deliciously spicy chipotle pepper (vegan) hotdog on an organic wheat bun, having mustard, ketchup and (out of this world) homeade organic relish drip down your face.

Even if it is in the front seat of your car parked by the curb on Irving and 17th in the rain.

Cash only, great topping choices, doesn't pretend to be anything but a local hot dog spot. Make sure you get there early: They will run out of tots!

I am proud to say that my first hot dog in 2 years (since I became a vegetarian) was from Underdog (:
I was surprised by how small the place was, but quickly appreciated the cozy (and very green!) atmosphere. Walls covered with snapple caps and posters, shelves filled with healthy, organic snacks.
Underdog serves to vegetarians, vegans, and meat-eaters as well.
My vegan hot dog was scrumptious, although my meat-eating sister begs to differ. Apparently I have forgotten what meat tastes like. I enjoyed the hot dog all the same.
We both agreed that the best part of that lunch may have been the side order of potater-tots. They are a bundle of crunchy, fluffy sorts of amazings, and definitely worth a try.

***Note:  I am making a valiant attempt throughout this review to avoid making naughty jokes about eating sausage.  You do not understand how difficult this is for me.  Let's see if I succeed.***

The Boy and I and five of our friends checked out Underdog yesterday, and it made us happy and gave us warm fuzzies.  An environmentally-friendly sausage joint with a hefty vegan menu?  Hells yeah, sez me!

We were a little worried that we wouldn't get seating, but the place was empty when we were there, so all 7 of us made good use of the two tables they had in the tiny establishment.

My carnivorous friends indulged in meaty sausages with gusto, while my Boy and I, being the plant-eating heathens that we are, indulged in an apple-cranberry vegan sausage and an Italian vegan sausage.

We piled our sausages high with slaw, relish, horseradish, and more from the well-stocked condiments bar and perused the vegan desserts and all the interesting pictures and posters on the wall while we ate.  We were seated directly in front of an Extreme Rock Paper Scissors poster which was particularly awesome.  But I digress.

The sausages were awesome, as were the (baked!) Tater Tots.  We sipped on a bottle of Asian Pear Kombucha and a pomegranate-passionfruit tea as we ate, and we finally decided to buy organic, vegan jellybeans and sour gummy worms instead of the yummy-looking vegan pies and cookies they had.  But next time, I do believe we must try the pie.

(OK, I am seriously struggling here.  Pie and sausage.  Come on, people. I'm only human.)

In short, Underdog is officially on my list of places I will eat at when I'm in the SF area.  You should try it, too.  Go ahead.  Have a sausage.  Munch on some pie.  And don't forget to use a condiment.

I can't believe this places slipped through my Yelp review cracks. It wasn't until I read someone's review about vegan hot dogs being served at a movie theater that I remembered Underdog.

First of all, they are 100% organic. Organic hot dogs, tater tots, condiments and vegan hot dogs. Yup, they have the best vegan hot dogs I've ever had! I'm not even a vegan, although I love to eat vegan food. One bite of their tofu dog and I seriously had to ask the girl behind the counter if she accidently gave me the wrong order. Nope, it was a tofu dog and it was damn good! You seriously can't go wrong with organic hot dogs and tater tots.

The store is tiny, but the vibe is awesome. Very cool and laid back staff, cool posters on the walls, and awesome music bumping. It just sucks that I'm out in Oakland and can't get to Underdog as often as I'd like.

Came in a few weeks ago to grab some lunch. My GF and i split a classic under dog and a portuguese dog. Both were fantastic. The casing had some pop but the inside was moist and juicy. I liked that they were served plain on a bun for you to do your own toppings, it shows they aren't hiding mediocre encased meats behind a bunch of silly toppings.

I don't know how, but somehow this vegan (obviously most dogs here are not veagan)-hippy-reggae themed place works.

Be warned though, this place is tiny. If you come during busy hours don't expect to find a parking spot easily, much less a place to sit. Luckily, Golden Gate Park is just a few blocks away.

Vegan apple sage sausage hot dog and vegan chipotle sausage hot dog are both good, apple sage had a richer flavor than the latter. Carrot cake vegan ice cream cone is GOOD, so is vanilla. Small rectangular space, one long table one small, very peaceful and friendly people here. Nice old posters of the city on the walls, some great art up too for sale. The food is good comfort food especially located in inner sunset with the fog and cold nights in this area. Three kinds of mustard: stoneground, dijon, yellow... ketchup, horseradish, pickle relish, onion, etc, all to place on your hot dogs. Vegan garlic/herb potato salad looks good, many sausages here for meat-, vegetarian-, or vegan-based diet wishes. I saw five for vegan, five for vegetarian and about 9 for meat on the menu, all of which have things in them like herbs and spices (usually both) or multiple kinds of meat/fake meat. Also they sell PBJs w/ grape jam and most everything here is all or close to all organic, etc. The way they cook the hot dogs will keep me returning. Cash only; you can get money from ATMs around. No good for groups as it's small and good idea to get it for home on these cold cold cold nights. Glad these folks are in business

Main three things I rate on with as few words as possible! (for future reference):

Location, People, Edible Stuff.

Awesome location, not far from the beach and on Irving street, parking is simple easy.

The owner Rizza is amazing, she is an awesome person, with crazy good vibes. The good vibes spill over into the food and underdogs general atmosphere. It's chill man.

Hands down the BEST HOT DOG in California. I recently brought two of my friends here that are NY residents and they both freaked about the hot dogs and said they were the best they had ever had! Enough said man. The desserts are the bomb incidentally.

Ohh this place has a GREEN factor of 10!! Everything is recyclable or compostable, EVERYTHING!!

I have officially voted this as my FAVORITE place to eat in SF for 2009!!
Way to serve up the best "Green" hot dogs in California Rizza!

HOLY FUCK. This place is amazing!

I had a vegan bratwurst and my girlfriend had a vegetarian tomato basil sausage. These veggie sausages taste eerily close to the real thing. So close, in fact, that I was kind of paranoid that they tricked me into eating actual meat!

On top of those, we had their organic tater tots. I wasn't excited or anything about the tater tots. I expected them to be normal, you know, whatever tater tots. I was taken by surprise. They have a unique, subtle taste to them. It's kind of hard to explain, but they were tasty!

This place is good for vegans, vegetarians and normal meat-eaters, so if you're a vegan/vegetarian with meat-eater friends, you won't have to convince them to go with you.

If you're ever in San Francisco, you HAVE to try Underdog. Seriously.
