As a belated Christmas gift, Ryan whisked me away from the hustle & bustle of the city streets to the quiet, relaxing Under the Ginkgo Tree B & B. I was bit nervous at first since I've never really stayed at a B & B and genuinely enjoy a modern, luxurious hotel but I was willing to give it a shot (it was a last minute surprise & all, how could I say no?!). Boy am I glad I did!

We arrived a bit later than Gloria, the lovely woman who runs the joint, expected but she was very accommodating. She gave us key to room number 5 & told us some of the rules...there were none, yahoo! "No curfew" was stressed numerous times. I don't know if she tells all her guests that or just us wild & crazy 20-somethings, but it was very sweet & reassuring. She also has little treats throughout the house-brownies &  Ghirardelli  chocolates, yum yum!

The room was quaint & had some interesting posters/artwork, which ranged from a framed Ferrari poster to a strange looking original piece of art featuring an egg man. At first it was a bit off putting, but after I warmed up to the place they actually became quite cute. Ryan & I ventured out into the town, enjoyed a fabulous dinner (do I hear a yelp review coming soon?!), and returned home to the comforts of Under the Ginkgo Tree.

Breakfast was served between 7:30-9:30 am & everyone sits at the table. We met people from Sweden, Michigan, and rural Indiana. It was really interesting, but for as early as it was I was not feeling like mingling.

Only downside to Under the Ginkgo Tree was that you could hear through the walls. I mean like word for word & you know what that means late at night...bump, bump. However, we still thoroughly enjoyed our stay here & would recommend to anyone who is interested in a little weekend getaway!

Once again, Gloria has come to our rescue.  I can not stress enough how gracious, kind and hospitable she is.  Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!

Although slightly quirky in only accepting checks and cash, this place is an excellent experience and a great price.

Prices are reasonable.  The weekend of the Chicago Marathon we were able to get a room with a private bathroom for $90 a night and rooms with shared bath for $75.

The location is a great neighborhood and close to the CTA Green Line and Metra for getting downtown and into the outer suburbs.  Make sure to check out downtown Oak Park and the very close Frank Lloyd Wright houses.

The rooms are well kept and the Victorian style house is beautiful.  It's possible to have a very private experience, but still be close to the rest of the family if you're traveling as a group.  As long as you're not one of those people allergic to fresh air, the front porch is marvelous for chatting away the hours on a freakishly warm October night.
