i havent been hear a long while, but i totally remember what it tastes like.
Albuquerque turkey with extra lettuce. i like the extra coldness and crunch. is that weird?
brownies are deadly. in a good way. -

It is great because its convenient and there is not a lot of other places in the vicinity. However, the sandwichs aren't that amazing.
I tend to only go there when the do half off before 3 on Fridays for DePaul Students barbecue otherwise they are to expensive for the quality. Or I end up there late on a Friday or Saturday night because their open till 2am which is nice.
There broccoli cheddar soup is decent I like the big broccoli chunks but its really expensive for a really small cup of soup.
There chips are super gross don't do it! & I wouldn't waste my money on the brownies because for the same price you could buy the whole box mix since they use Ghiradelli Brownie Box mix. -

The food was not good. You get what is very similar to a Jimmy John's sub bun ( I don't like Jimmy Johns mainly because of their sub buns which get all mushy very quickly) with slightly better ingredient pairings...but not better ingredients. I got the Thanksgiving themed sandwich (turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce) because I was told it was their best, ahem, sammy. It was soggy. This was in large part due to the mass amounts of mayo slathered on both top and bottom of aforementioned jimmy-johnesque bun which, as I mentioned, already has a propensity to sog. In addition, the staff was seemingly in a hipsterish melancholy fog and it's hard to describe the attitude they exuded as anything other than indifferent. Furthermore, one of them had their filthy Chrome backpack (not really sure if that was the brand, I'm going full-blown stereotype here, but it was dirty I assure you) on the prep table...sick. Once the counter guy got done ringing us up he exited the staff area and proceeded to service his sweet 10-speed in the customer dining area...pretty intense.
The brownie was really tasty. Actually, the brownie was amazing enough to make the overall score 2 stars. Otherwise, Sammy needs a clue: it was the hipster in the dining room with the monkey wrench... -

Came in here the other night and felt like I had just stumbled upon some weird viral marketing experiment, or a hidden camera show.
One employee, wrench in hand, was working on his bike. Another was sitting Indian-style on the food prep counter in between the two meat slicers, with a backpack actually leaning on one of the slicing surfaces (strange). Note that I am assuming they were employees because they were hanging out in employee-only areas.
Not sure I will be back, even though there are no other good, quick food options nearby.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I don't know how this place has 4 stars... Obviously some people haven't tried the Heartland or Atlantic City, because there's not one thing that I can find wrong with Uncle Sammy's. I mean the bread with turkey, mixed perfectly with the perfect amount of tomatoes and lettuce, some mayo and whatever their secret ingredient to awesomeness is, equals your Uncle Sammy's sandwich, that I am mentally slobbering over as I am writing this review.

Fine place for a delivery sandwich. If you like a standard sub, this is a great place. Similar to a Jimmy John's but with a little more character, better flavor, and way cheaper prices. don't expect the most gourmet sandwich you've ever tasted, but for the price, convenience, and free delivery it's perfect.

Everyone rants and raves about this place, and i am not quite sure why.
One I think it is overpriced for a sandwich. The sandwich always has meat and cheese hanging out of the sides. It looks like they just through the meat on there and closed the bread. The bread is very good. I will eat here, but it is not my first choice for a sandwich. I will go to jimmy john's before uncle sammys
But the brownies are seriously soooo delicious! -

Just ok. Reminds me of Jimmy Johns, and there are definitely better sandwich places. The brownies are good though, and huge.

Sandwiches were bland. Employees were blasting their music so loud that we couldn't even have a conversation. Not surprised we were the only ones in the place. Definitely won't be back.

Is is bad when I am starving on a Sunday and cant find somewhere to grab food.
I stumbled upon this place...
Well, its a standard sandwich shop. I guess they bake their own bread...honestly, at this point, I really didnt care what they did to the bread. I was starving....seriously, so I decided on the biggest sandwich on the menu....the Vegas. I honestly dont even know what was on it. I think it was something along the lines of double everything they have....slightly disgusting, but I didnt care.
The sandwich reminded me of jimmy johns but maybe a little smaller?
The people that work there are awkward, at best. I dont know if everyone was high or what. No a word out of any of them. Plus, it took like 10 mins to make two sandwiches....speed it up junior! I think they are all college kids just trying to make a little booze/drug money.
Overall, it hit the spot...was it fantastic, no. Would I go back, yes. -

Sure, anyone can compare this place to Jimmy John's... but knowing that there is only one Uncle Sammy's makes this sandwich shop taste much better. These kids put care into what they make, and you can tell they have a lot of fun doing it.
My favorite sandwich would be the Little Italy,; its topped with house dressing made out of olive oil and vinegar with hot peppers. All of the sandwiches I've had were excellent (turkey... roast beef... Californian)... but the main item that is my favorite would be the huge chocolate chip brownie which is always so fresh, moist and necessary after this meal. I cannot order a Sammy without purchasing this brownie.
Thank you Uncle Sammy's for helping me get through college ! -

How can you not just LOVE this place? Cheap, filing, delicious sammies made quickly in a clean atmosphere and friendly staff? It doesn't get any better for lunch.
Though I would compare it most to Jimmy John's it's truly nothing like JJ's. The sandwiches have much more unique ingredients (cranberry sauce, olive tapenade, Italian vinaigrette) and freshly baked bread each day.
The staff rocks and so do the coupons - I have in my possession a coupon for 2 drinks 2 sammies 2 sides for $10 and a coupon for buy one get one free sammie. They deliver via bicycle even in the dead of winter for one sandwich - how green! Love this place. -

So happy I made it here yesterday, the most delicious sandwiches!!
The ingredients here are so much better than anything served at Jimmy Johns or Subway.
I had the Heartland, that had the thickest turkey and most fresh provolone cheese!
The only thing was, this place was a little unkept. The tables were all a mess with scraps of garbage on the floor as well as the bathroom.
We opted to eat outside on their little outdoor tables, which was fine, it was a beautiful day anyway!
I'll definately be back here when I'm craving a sandwich -

In the past, Uncle Sammy's was a pretty decent sandwich shop. Unfortunately, it appear that this is no longer the case. The past few times I've gone to Uncle Sammy's for lunch, the service and food quality has been progressively getting worse.
The last time I was in for lunch, they lost my order, then made me the wrong sandwich.Comment from Stephen F. of Uncle Sammy's Sandwich Classics 3/29/2011

These reviews are pretty spot on. The brownies are really good and the bread is always fresh! The owner uses quality products.
My sandwich is the tuna...order extra tuna for your post-workout protein kick. The Vegas and Italian are good too....but watch out for the pilgrim sandwich....(turkey, cranberries and stuffing -- so there is breading in the bread!)...it's a carb nightmare ...just sayin! Check them out...they are open late and delivery is free. -

I'll break it down:
Only nice thing about this place is: very fresh bread, AMAZING brownies, delivers SO LATE and anywhere, very affordable for college students, sandwiches are healthy. Good place as a "hang out" place with friends. They also offer LOADS of coupons and deals for their sandwiches
Negativity: Awful service. Employees are college students who don't care about customers so just try to get their jobs done and that's that. Their sandwiches are just... classic sandwiches with nothing that outstanding. They taste like my mom's sandwiches?
This place has had the reputation of sending students to hospitals of food poisoning cases. Be careful!Comment from Stephen F. of Uncle Sammy's Sandwich Classics 3/15/2011

Perfect for late nights or when you're just craving a sandwhich.
I always order the Atlantic Sandwhich (their tuna salad= out of this world). And they may have the BEST brownies I've ever had. in my life. And I basically get brownies everywhere because I love them.
The deliverie is fast (although its never happened to me, they often forget things but will always compensate you for it) and the people working at the actual place are funny. I've gotten free stuff here loads of time, especially when I go right before closing at like 2 a.m. -

I was introduced to Uncle Sammy's by an Uncle Sammy lover. I had to take his comments about this sandwich shop with a grain of salt because clearly, he was biased.
Their menu is very simple--custom sandwiches with quirky names, soups, chips, and drinks. I gravitated towards the Albuquerque Turkey and Californian sandwiches. I was in the mood for some avocado and both of these sandwiches had it!
Okay, here is my bias. I lived in California for a while, so I guess you can say I'm biased towards all things from the wild wild west. I ordered the Californian sandwich because it had mozzarella, tomato, AND avocado! You can't get any more NorCal than that.
My sandwich was put together very quickly. I unwrapped it, took a bite and...
:::cue Tupac's "California Love":::
Wow. This sandwich was so good! Everything was fresh, from the bread to the lettuce. Also, their mozzarella was oh-so fresh.
Usually, I'm all about Subway and Potbelly, but Uncle Sammy's is now a champion contender in my world of subs! -

I ordered online after work through http://Chitownmenus.com because i had eaten here before and was excited for the delivery experience.
The food came very quickly and i paid less than $10 for my sammich and drink. I ordered "The Windy City" which consists of ham, roast beef, lettuce tomato and mayo on a fresh baked hoagie roll. It tasted good and all, but there wasnt much meat on there, it felt like alot of bread. However, the second sandwich i got for free for ordering online was absolutely divine...and the experience is fresh in my mind because im eating it as i write. The second one is called "The Atlantic City" and is essentially a home made tuna salad sandwich and tastes fantastic. So yeah, 2 meals and a drink for less than 10 bucks wen you order online and another 10% off if you enter BLUE10 in the promo code area.
Happy Eating. -
Review from Sarah E.
Why oh why do I always, allllllllways fall into the trap of a cute, bubble-letter sign with bright coloring, permanently affixed to the building as an indication that cuteness and permanence equals quality taste? Because it does NOT, sir! It does not! I wanted to break out of my chain food funk. Give Panera and Qdoba and PotSmelly's a break, try the little guy. Well the little guy ain't got nothin' on the corporate big wigs, I have come to find!
The little gal behind the counter spilling out a near constant giggle while I ordered my Pilgrim sandwich (sans mayo, I think cranberry sauce is plenty of gluttony for one sandwich) should have been inclination enough that this wasn't going to be pleasant. Is there something on my face? Are my undies showing through my dress? What the eff are you laughing at, little missy?!
Cut to the sandwich-- turkey, crap stuffing and canned cranberry sauce. Really? Bread was crunchy, and appeared to be trying to pull a Jimmy John's but just failed miserably. Not to mention this sandwich would have been a whole lot better if it were served warm. I'm not an eating leftovers out of the fridge kind of girl, and that's exactly what this sandwich tasted like.

Review from David R.
This joint has no character, sort of like their sandwiches have no flavor. If they took the name down, it could be a Subway. Only, without the choices.
First visit, I ordered the Big Easy, their version of a Muffaletta. Um, non. With each bite, all I could taste was ham, although there was also turkey, tomato, and lettuce in it. Their "tapenade" added almost nothing to the sandwich: I detected a faint tinge of garlic but that was all.
I decided to give them another shot today since I was going to be in the area for a couple of other reasons. I tried the "Heartland"--a straight-up turkey sandwich with provolone, lettuce, and tomato, hold the Hellman's, please. They don't skimp on the turkey but this one was even blander than the first.
There's nothing wrong with simplicity, but when a business chooses that approach, they have to deliver on quality. There is nowhere to hide when your sandwich has only four ingredients. Uncle Sammy's fails in this respect, especially in contrast to some of their competitors, both chains (Jimmy John's) and local independent establishments (Second City Subs). With those guys around to fill the simple-sandwich niche, I see no reason to return to Uncle Sammy's. -

Better than any of the chain restaurants, and way more wallet-friendly!
I've tried a handful of their sandwiches, but I must admit I now only get the Little Italy. I order it with extra giardiniera. It's not too spicy, and super-fresh - like the bread and all the toppings!
Make sure you stop in on Fridays, it's half price.
You won't regret trying Uncle Sammy's! -

This place kicks the pants off of super chain sandwich slops, I mean shops... (Subway, Quizno's, Jimmy Johns). Quick Service. Fresh Ingredients. Outdoor seating. Above all open til midnight and 2 am!!! That is F***ing Awesome! Little Italy is my favorite! I would suggest on better up keep of their tables and their washroom, but all in all a pretty damn good sandwich spot.

This was a nice and quick place to stop in for lunch today. Right by depaul and being hungry I figured why not and went on it. There weren't that many people in there when I stopped in, mostly because it was 11:30 and I was able to quickly order up a turkey sub and a drink.
They quickly put my sub together and it was in my hand before I was done filling up my drink. It wasn't that big of a sub, but it was just fine for not wanting too much. I was able to get the sub and drink for around $7 which worked for me.
While I wouldn't exactly make this a destination all the time, but I'd also have no problem going back. A 2.5 would probably be a more exact rating, but I'm in a good mood so 3 it is -

The people who work here are incredibly nice, very friendly and amazing customer service. I was there with some friend from DePaul who were filming for a school project, and they were very accommodating.
While we were there, we saw a customer acting very bizarrely, walking around with only socks, making nonsensical statements, dancing in line and making very strange demands on the staff, including bringing his sandwich back and describing it as disgusting. In my opinion, this customer clearly had some sort of disability or was abusing illegal substances.
The staff, all college students, handled this situation extremely professionally, with excellent customer service, promptly giving the man a new sandwich and apologizing for any dissatisfaction. I was very impressed.
I had the Atlantic City when we were done shooting, since I was starving. It was a nice tuna salad, and I liked the raisins inside, but I thought it was a little too mayo-y with not enough tuna. The bread was good though, and the sandwich very filling. -

I have uncovered the mystery!! I know who the "Uncle" is behind Uncle Sammy's!! It's **drumroll, please** Seattle Sutton! After all, only Seattle Sutton could get behind a sandwich that is so d@ng skinny! Honestly, when the surly college sandwich maker finished rolling his eyes long enough to handover my "Little Italy", I blinked at it a few times. This? This is it? This is what I am paying $5.50 for? Oh, snap! I held it in my hand and looked a bit out of it. So, of course, customer service demanded the following: "So, do you like, *need* something else?" I was too stunned to slap him. Instead, I hearkened back to what I read in the reviews - the brownie! Don't leave without getting a brownie!" I plopped down $1.25, chose the biggest brownie of the bunch and entered into the cold, dark night.
I got home and started in on my Ally McBealish sandwich. It tasted fine but there wasn't a lot to it. There wasn't even much lettuce. Lettuce, man!! The garlic sauce was tasty at first, good by the middle and a little nauseating by the end. I don't know what happened. It was probably due to the fact that the vinaigrette was creamy and not oily. I feel lonely and confused. I didn't know what to do. I wasn't quite full but I wasn't hungry. Shouldn't I leave the brownie for later?
Nope!
If it weren't for that brownie, you may have seen me on the Ch. 9 news last night as I went back to US and laid down some Johnny T justice. This brownie is every bit as good as everyone says it is. You, simply, cannot leave here without getting one. It was moist, chocolatey, filling and satisfying. I don't know that I'd ever come here for a sandwich. But, I might come back in for that brownie. Your nefarious plan almost worked, Ms. Sutton. I almost got tricked into thinking that skinny sandwiches were normal and satisfactory. Unfortunately for you, Auntie Ghiradelli made short work of the skinny foolishness. Never trust a skinny chef and never eat a skinny sandwich! Come for the brownie or don't come at all.Listed in: Dag-what?

Decent sandwiches, decent prices, decent service. Nothing bad but nothing great. Completely middle of the road. I imagine Uncle Sammy must live in Lebanon, Kansas - the geographic center of the United States. While generally not a bad place, it's in the middle of a country with places that are so much better.
This is a good place to go if... you're a new student at DePaul and aren't yet ready to venture more than a few blocks from campus for a decent sandwich. -
Review from Brandi S.

Uncle Sammy's offers you very little for too much money. They get away with charging $5.50 a sandwich because their portions are HUGE, but I don't like being duped into buying extra when I know that I can't possibly eat that much food. They don't offer half-sandwiches or children's portions, so you don't have a choice. They charge just as much for their sole vegetarian sandwich (the Californian) as they do for their sandwiches with double meat. How is that fair?
Their brownies are very good, I'll admit, and the restaurant is always clean. The staff are generally very nice. There is outdoor seating, but it's usually taken up by people sitting outside smoking. Uncle Sammy's: I just don't understand the big deal.
UPDATE: I didn't know that Uncle Sammy's offers half-off every Friday for college students. I will definitely take advantage of this offer. I also neglected to mention that Uncle Sammy's takes Demon Express (the debit account for DePaul students) which is awesomely convenient. -

What a tasty sandwich I had! I ordered the California sandwich and I found the avocado delicious and the pesto mayo savory and good.
I shared a sandwich with Lara...they are really very generous! The $5 Sandwich is probably about 10 inches long and very filling.
The store seemed kind of bare bones, but the outdoor seating was nice. I'd definitely eat here often if I lived nearby. I'm curious about the brownies, but passed them this time. -

Not sure I have much to add about this place, but just in case the other reviews aren't enough to get the message across, this place is ok. That's it. Just ok.
I live a couple blocks away, so I really wanted to like it. I was hoping it would have the charm of a local, college sandwich shop. Instead, I found a wannabe Jimmy John's. I'd say the ingredients are generally fresher than those at JJ's, but for some reason the sandwich I had just wasn't any better. I had the Californian, which is the evil twin of the Vegetarian Sub (numero 6, I believe) at JJ's. Despite having some pretty tasty fresh mozzarella on this sub (in lieu of fairly generic provolone), there was really nothing exceptional about this sandwich. And it wasn't even cheap. And it was smaller than a JJ's sub. Hmmm...not a lot of redeeming qualities. That said, it wasn't bad. It just wasn't good.
This place is the epitome of mediocrity. Boring, unoffensive, mediocrity. Next time I will probably walk to Potbelly or Jimmy John's instead. -
Review from Kathy P.
UPDATE: After I posted the review, the owner immediately contacted me and I was very impressed with his willingness to make things right so I'm adding another star. I'm optimistic that next time I go, the service will be faster!
Great place if you're craving some good simple sandwiches. It's pretty much like a Jimmy John's but slightly better. I had the Little Italy which was quite tasty and I can't tell if I like that or my Vito from JJ's better...although the bread at Uncle Sammy's is slightly better in my opinion. The Vegas was pretty good too which surprised me since I thought it would be a lot like the Gargantuan from JJ...I think it was the combination of garlic vinaigrette plus mayo..yum! And the brownie is really good too...so fudgy and delicious.
So why the two stars and the only place I've given 2 stars so far? The place was pretty much dead yet it took them forever to make our sandwiches. It literally took about 5 minutes to make two sandwiches and I started thinking they forgot about our order. I thought that was odd since the other reviews I saw said positive things about their speed. -

Full disclosure: I was originally going to knock Uncle Sammy's a star because they wouldn't deliver 2 blocks outside their radius, and my friends and I were left with the options of pick-up or no sammy. However, they definitely more than made up for it with the execution of my order.
My friends explained that Uncle Sammy's was basically a bunch of ex-Jimmy John's employees who branched out on their own and made sammiches which were reminiscent of JJ but better. Better in small but important ways, like the creamy garlic vinaigrette and the humungous brownies. One of the guys was going on a sub run, so I wrote down my order for him - whatever was the closest approximation to JJ's Turkey Tom, but also with pickles and that garlic vinaigrette, no avocado, and cheese. He ran out the door, promising to be back before the end of the Simpsons episode we were watching.
When my friend got back (with 4 minutes to spare), he explained that my sammich had been remade twice so it would be just right, because the people making the sammy didn't want it to taste like avocado residue or whatever. I thought that was pretty nice of them - a little over the top, because I'm not terrified of avocados or anything, but definitely nice. Then, my friend told me that they don't even really offer pickles on their subs, but because he said "pickles" when he was listing stuff, they tracked down a deli pickle and sliced it up for my sammy. I don't even eat brownies, but these kids sure do get brownie points!Listed in: I like food

Sammy's gets a 4 for being a classic. Their food is good, staff is quick and friendly, the place has a great environment. But it only being a standard sandwich place [much like Jimmy Jones] with a few standout sandwiches it gets a 4. I would highly suggest checking out Uncle Sammy's.
Great late night also, the sandwiches are a perfect way to end the night. Also with free delivery Uncle Sammys is very convenient
To try: Try the Vegas! its a bit more expensive but I think it is the best sandwich there! Also try the Pilgrim, a unique sandwich that reminds you of thanksgivingListed in: Late night around DePaul

I love this place. Love it so much, in fact, that my bosses gave me an Uncle Sammy's gift card (yes, they have them!).
Me: Where should we order lunch from today?
Bosses: Not Uncle Sammy's AGAIN! (although they both love it too)
My favorites are the Sam Houston (roast beef) and the whatever the Italian one is called. I tried the Pilgrim (aka Thanksgiving) and thought it was okay but there wasn't much turkey in it. It was more like a stuffing sandwich. I'm a little afraid to try the tuna because it has raisins in it. Nothing against raisins, I'm just iffy about them in tuna salad. I also like that if I ask them for a cup for water, they give me a full sized cup instead of a stupid little one.
And the brownies....wow. The first time I ordered from here they gave us a couple free ones because they were late with the delivery. Boy, am I glad they did because these brownies are incredible. But they are HUGE. As in four people can split one. And they're only like $1.25, I think.
Overall US is great. Friendly staff, good food, clean place. And way better for you than pizza when you're hungry at 2am.
