Busy place with families, parties, and business people.

Ordered a combination plate with Chili Relleno, Cheese Enchilada, and pork tamale.  Probably the best chili relleno I've had in a while, was large, great coating, and plenty of cheese inside.  The tamale had very little meat and too much corn meal.  The beans on the side with bacon was the best part of the dinner.

Service was fast and prices were reasonable.  Will go back if I'm in the area.

They make their tortillas on-site and you can see them being made.  They are nice and thick and yummy!
The portions are huge so oftentimes we just get the Queso Fundido appetizer which I don't see on the menu anymore but they still will make it.  It has chorizo and perfectly melted cheese which we eat with the tortillas.
We often split entrees and last time enjoyed the Camarones Brochette which is shrimp wrapped with bacon and there was a little slice of jalapeno.  The shrimp is supposed to be stuffed with monterey jack cheese and the jalapeno slice but we didn't really notice any cheese.  The accompaniment included guacamole and pico de gallo which was more like chopped tomatoes.  The guac is good.  The bean soup is the best I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant.
I love the flan here!!!  Sometimes they have flavored flan like pumpkin.  Always yummy.

I don't get the draw of this place while it has some positives:

Nice location, $3 lunch parking, lots of seating, nice decor

None of their positives are the food, as usual it is bland and nothing to get too excited about.  I tried the grilled fish tacos and found the ingredients while pretty fresh just kinda "bleh" no real spice or seasoning on the fish and the tilapia was a but fishy tasting. The avocado cream sauce was pretty good though.

The rice was ok and the spicy beans were tasty but a tad too salty. They are also overpriced for Mexican food but I will attribute that to the area.

Their one and only saving grace is the salsa they give you before you eat, it is delicious, not too spicy with a nice smoky Chipotle flavor otherwise, don't bother with this place go up to Lincoln Square and hit Garcia's or head to La Condessa on Ashland or head down Chicago ave to Tecalitlan all are reasonably priced great Mexican restaurants with much cheaper drinks and bigger portions!

Location, location, location.  Without it, this place ceases to exist.  Parking lot doesn't hurt either.

Service:  When we arrived, were told 5-10 minutes by the miserable women working the welcome counter.  45 minutes later when I went back to get an update, I think I actually heard one of them growl.  They were glaring at me when they pointed out the direction I should walk to my table.  I think the manager took us to our table.  Those women are mean like a bag of snakes.  The waiter was nice but little he could do to compensate.  Oh, and it took 30 for them to bring my car after dinner.

Food: Mediocre, maybe 3 stars.  Chips and Salsa was good.  If it is worth stating that the chips and salsa are good, you know there are some issues.  My fajitas were good but I would have preferred if they took the skin off the chicken and did not drizzle butter on top.  Actually, I take that back, I am glad about the butter :)

I have been here two times and both times were enjoyable. I love that they give you an enormous amount of chips and salsa! And they refill it for you. Their servers are on top of it, which I love. Every time I have gone here I always got a great waiter/waitress. They make really good suggestions on apps, drinks, and entrees, which is a plus because the menu is quite large.

I am a simple girl when it comes to Mexican or Tex-Mexy kind of food. So when I go to  Hacienda, I get steak enchiladas and the boy gets the Guadalajara. Both entrees come with rice and beans. The Guadalajara is your choice of fajitas with big juicy shrimp wrapped in bacon. It also comes with flour tortillas, pico de gallo, and a dollop of guac! hmmm nom nomz.

My steak enchiladas come with rice and beans and are topped with cheese and onions and a chili meat sauce (red sauce). It comes with a little lettuce and tomatoes on the side. For an app, we always get the guac and queso combo. It is just enough to take care of that grumble in your tummy and hold you off until your main course comes along.

It is a little bit more pricey, but you have leftovers for the next day and it is very filling. Street parking is available and hard to find on weekends, but they always have valet. It can get crowded but the place is huge and I have never had to wait for a table when I venture out to Hacienda.

I will be back for more queso and enchiladas!

The tortilla chips are AMAZING - they are so thin and crispy.  These chips alone will keep me craving Julios.  I also really like the salsa - I'm not s big fan of chunky salsa and this place dices their salsa fairly well.  The guac that I had recently wasn't that great - it was missing some pazzaz.

I had the chicken and beef fajitas and they were delicious.  I really like the flavor and they were so filling.  Of course, I had the hurricane as a drink - which was tasty - perfect balance of sweet and tangy.

I definitely recommend this place if you are in the mood for some tex-mex food.  It definitely hit the spot for me!

This Uncle Julios is located really close to the North/Clybourn Red Line stop. I also noticed that people parked their cars too in their parking lot for a $3 valet service charge. I have been to Uncle Julios before in Dallas. The decor is essentially the same at this location. I noticed that people were watching the football game here so it was pretty lively. We just missed the brunch here due to our friends being so late, but I would like to come back to experience that.

When you first sit down, they give you tortilla chips with their salsa. Then I had the camarones a la parilla with chicken. It was very delicious indeed. Our waiter with the neon green tie was pretty nice. In fact, I know that my friend liked him so much that he gave him his telephone number. LOL. Now that's some service.

Wow, this place sucks really bad!

They try and rip you off at every point in the process from driving up to heading out the door.

I will be writing my reasons in bullet-point format:

-Parking costs $7. this was on a thursday and there was tons of street parking around corner so its basically just an inconvenience. If you have a parking lot of decent size and its not a friday or saturday its a crime in my opinion to not allow free parking for your clientele.

-They don't serve pitchers of margaritas!!!! I seriously can't think of a single margarita serving place Ive EVER been to that only serves it by the glass. This forces you to buy the overpriced single serving.

-Their beer selection is gimmicky and paltry, but what irks me is that there is only $0.49 difference between domestic and import beers... and no, the domestics aren't cheap. I believe its $5 for domestic and $5.50 for import.

-I believe 4 tortillas would be good for fajitas, maybe 3, definitely not just 2. If you order the fajitas for 2 you get 2 tortillas a piece... WTF, do you want me to scoop it up and eat it like stew Mr Julio? If that's even your true name... the place is probably run by a hedge fund for all i know.

-Standard basic ingredients for a fajita:
                        -meat (unless your vegetarian)
                        -grilled/sauteed onions
                        -grilled/sauteed peppers
                        -tortillas
Ive never been to any restaurant that doesn't give you peppers when ordering fajitas. As you can imagine, Uncle Julios doesn't give you any peppers with your fajitas order.

    -meat was undercooked

-chicken had no flavor, i don't even think they put salt on it.

Thanks for reading this everyone, and Uncle Julio... quit being such a money grubbing penny pinching d**che please... you silly uncle you

it was my first time here and I am giving them 2 stars because the only thing i liked was the home-made tortillas.

    1. For $10.00 i got the house margarita...i thought it was going to be a decent size for the price, but it came in one of those short rocks glasses filled to the top with ice...i feel like i finished the marg in about 3 sips.

    2. The server rolled his eyes IN MY FACE after i asked him the 3rd question about something on the menu because I had never been there before.

    3. The guacamole looked like it was put in the blender for 10 minutes to make sure there were no chunks of avocados.... it is most likely the guac out of the pre-made bags from like Costco... ew. sooo not fresh tasting.

One of the better places to eat in this commercialized area of Lincoln Park.

Order a margarita, queso/guacamole with the free chips/salsa, chicken/steak combo fajitas and you won't be disappointed.

Good place to dine with large groups of people and they have valet parking.

    Check it.

What the hell do I say after 500+ reviews? The margaritas are good, the food is good, the prices are fine.

Chicago has 9,000 taquerias so find one of those for authentic, cheap Mexican food. Go to Uncle Julio's for after-work play, happy-hour, girl's night, etc...

I don't get overly excited about chain restaurants in Chicago, especially Mexican ones, because we have a wealth of amazing authentic Mexican restaurants to choose from. But, when in the North/Clybourn area in need of a margarita & some dinner, Uncle Julio's is a solid option.

The margaritas are definitely delicious (albeit expensive for the size), and every time I've eaten here the food has been good as well. The service is always great, the waiters are super nice, speedy & conscious of the whole refilling of the water & chips in a timely manner thing.

I just wish it were less expensive & I wish it weren't swarming with kids all the time. I'd like to enjoy my margarita without a side of screaming.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to eat at a cheesy chain Mexican restaurant when Chicago has one of the largest Mexican populations in the country and is packed with excellent taquerias and other authentic Mexican food.  And while this gentrified intersection has robbed most local eateries of their rents, there are still many great Mexican places not far away in on Ashland.

So, I had to eat here because other family members picked it out.  (Yes as a place to take our out of town guests from Mexico City.  Oy vey what were they thinking?)  I had a taco with filled with guac.  It was fresh and huge.  Over priced, yes, but it was so big I only had to order one instead of the usual 4-5 to make me full.

Uncle Julio's is a pretty good place socialize, drink, and have a good meal with friends.
However, the last time I went, the wait was extraordinarily long. When we first arrived, the hostess told us 45 minutes. 45 minutes later, she told us us we'd have to wait ten minutes. Ten minutes later, we were next in line (we were NOT next in line).

Also, when my friend went here for his birthday, they brought him out ice cream, which is always nice. Then they charged him for it. Not so nice.

I'm really surprised at myself for putting out the 5 stars on Uncle Julios, but there's not a damn thing to complain about. There were a few flies out on the patio and the soap ran out in the bathroom... but the food was plentiful and delicious, and the service was EXCELLENT.

Our waiter, Ferdinand (not sure I'm spelling correctly), was extremely attentive, we always had warm chips, full drinks. It was my mom's birthday dinner, and they provided us with a free dessert w/o even asking.

I could have used a few more vegetarian options, but I cannot complain about the vegetarian fajitas. Sooo much foood. We hobbled out of there and had to stop a few times during our walk to our next destination.

I'd go again in a heartbeat. We got there around 5:00 and had no wait, but it got packed pretty fast after that.

I had a steak quesadilla and it was AMAZING.  I order quesadilla's pretty much everywhere I go and this was one of the best I've ever had.  The service was great considering the place was jam packed.  I went with one of my girlfriends so we ordered a few frozen drinks which were also delicious.

It's a fun atmosphere but still classy enough for a nice dinner out.  It's a little pricier than most Mexican restaurants but the food is high quality.

I went here last night with a few friends. The chips and cheese dip were delicious. Wasn't too fond of the salsa though.

    Margaritas were AMAZING.

I ordered the beef Fajitas, but wish I would've got chicken instead. I've had better beef fajitas before. It was pretty good, but nothing phenomenal.

Portions are pretty big, so enough to take leftovers home.

Service was great, we had a good waiter, although he kept pushing us to buy more drinks.

I really disliked my experience here. The waitress was surly when she wasn't pulling the ol' disappearing act. The salsa was incredibly bland, gross! It was like they dumped two jars of canned tomatoes in a bowl and called it a day. The carne asada was bone-dry and tasteless.

I like Uncle Julio's, it is easy to get too the food is good and I have always had good service.  But for Mexican food it is kinda pricey, and I have had better MARGARITAS (wish are staple for me).

Having been there multiple times, here is what I have tried:
Chips-good very thin & crispy w/just enough salt!
    Salsa-good
Guac-good and comes with shredded cheese, making it better
    Queso Dip-really good
Grilled Fish Tacos-good, except I don't like their corn tortilla
Quesadillas-good, the chicken is marinated & seasoned nicely

I would not stop any one from going here, but don't go out of your way.  If in the mood for Mexican, I recommend Tepatulco in Lincoln Park and Cantina Laredo in River North, Big Star in Bucktown/Wicker Park, Taco Joint in Lincoln Park.

Fun place with pretty good tex mex food.  This place gets packed - the secret is to call ahead.  If you call ahead they will put your name on the list and tell you when to arrive.

The waitstaff is great at Julio's.  I think our waiters name was Quentin.  I was quick, and offered very thoughtful recommendations.

We always order the guacamole which is very good.  Last time we also tried the queso which is also quite yummy.  Some of the dinner portions are huge.  I usually order two tacos which is the perfect amount of food for me.  They let you mix and match the tacos, hard and soft and whichever meats you like.

The cocktails are a must.  I really liked the frozen sangria.  Friends really like the margaritas too.

I live a block away and my friends have been raving about this place so I decided to give it a go.

From the get-go with their quasi-racist caricature of "Uncle Julio" outside, I didn't like this place.  But what the heck I'll let it slide, clearly their target demo won't notice (or care) the tongue-in-cheek racism.

Down to business, I got some food.  Tacos, Flautas, and the works.  It wasn't bad, but it was disappointing.  Even for tex-mex it was still mediocre at best.
It's great that their chips and salsa is tasty.  But that's not why I came.  I'm not a fan of the overpriced bland mediocre chain tex mex food that I could easily get at a food court at a shopping mall in Omaha.

The service was great, but I definitely place more emphasis on food at restaurants.  With such a large population of Mexicans here in Chicago, you could easily find a better food choice blindfolded.
BUT some Americans want to enjoy mexican-ish food without being around Mexicans (who are busy frequenting good mexican restaurants) in that case, Uncle Julio's Hacienda is your type of place.

The last time I was here, I met up with a friend. We had some drinks and an appetizer at the bar. I enjoyed the atmosphere, however the food was just okay. I had hoped that the food would have been tweaked (since my last visit) to be a little more authentic, but it was not.
I would go back again if friends wanted to hang out there, because I did like the lively atmosphere, but would not choose it myself.

This restaurant happens to be in a very hip, heavily populated part of the city, which adds to it's popularity, otherwise, it would probably be less busy.

First off...let's get one thing straight.  Uncle Julios is Tex-Mex not Authentic Mexican food.  There is a big difference, and this restaurant needs to be reviewed for what it is.

Upon entering Uncle Julios, my wife (a Texan) and I felt a strange sense of deja vu.   From the atmosphere to the tortilla chips to the house made tortillas...we were at a Pappasito's.  After further conversation with the manager, we confirmed our impression and the "unique relation" the restaurants have with one another.  Regardless, I am very happy to have a similar restaurant available to me in Chicago.

The complimentary tortilla chips are thin and light.  I could eat like three baskets...seriously delicious.   We went with our favorite dish from our Texas favorite: combo fajitas.  We did run into a service issue at this point...the fajita plate was sizzling but the meats were cold.  The dish came out way to quick, so we knew this was fired for another table or was an extra order.  We promptly sent the dish back and received a hot replacement.  Our server apologized and the manager checked in on us to make sure the problem was fixed.  It was, and the fajitas were amazing!

What impressed me was the manager continued to make it right by sending complimentary sopapillas our way.  I felt that the issue was handled professionally and correctly.

Overall, I give 4 stars instead of 5 stars only because of the kitchen putting out a cold dish.   We will be back.

I think this place has the best fajatias in the city.   I think it is primarily because they have homeade flour tortillas.  It can get very busy and loud.  But get over that and enjoy some of the best Tex-Mex in Chicago.  If you go at lunch time they have smaller less expensive portions also...  I have noticed that is what many of my friends complian about.

They make a margarita here called a swirl that is to die for.  It is a frozen margarita mixed with frozen sangria.  Best drink in the city...

oh and by the way, the vallet guys here are very good and cordial.  I think they pack 250 cars in a lot the size of a postage stamp.

Im torn about what to give this place, because our server was nice and helpful and very accommodating. However, the food was dreadful!!

Came here after work on a Thursday night, it was crowded but no biggy. Just a lively place is all. Do not go here if you want a conversation, its a bit too loud to have one across the same table. But you know, don't come here if you want good food period.

I had their shrimp diablos which were supposed to be spicey but were incredibly bland. They wouldve been better off giving shrimp cocktail with a hot sauce. It was gross.

Warning to vegetarians, their beans are cooked with pork/pork bi-product even though they are listed as vegetarian options. Be sure to specify what you are looking for. Or simply, just don't go here.

Server was a 5, but the food was a negative so that's that I suppose.

    Uh, no.

The margaritas are sickeningly sweet and the food is just awful.

They have scored a major win with their location in the North/Clybourn area.  Any restaurant in that spot could sell crap and still rake in the dough.  And they do.

This place is a perfect place to bring out of town guests who want Mexican- not upscale or not scary "city" Mexican. I am not a heavy red meat eater but find myself ordering the carne asada steak fajitas more often than not because they are amazing and make for amazing left-overs! The swirl (frozen margarita + frozen strawberry daiquiri) is awesome. Chips and salsa are delish. I hear the bacon-wrapped shimp are divine and they also serve frog legs and quail???

Biggest complaint is their no reservations policy. Especially when the bar (where you wait) is especially crowded and obnoxious.

This is a good chain of Tex Mex restaurants I was first introduced to when I lived in Dallas.

The decor is nothing special, but the place is pretty big and they have a parking lot.

Love the chips and salsa (sometimes too much).  I am weird and don't really like cheese, so I usually opt for fajitas at Mexican food places.  They are good and definitely enough for tomorrow's lunch too.  The Sopapillas are good for dessert if you are like me and need to end each meal on a sweet note.

Service and food were good.  I would recommend this location.

There are few establishments that I've ever genuinely regretted having dined at. This is one of them. There were screaming children, a woman running around in a bathing suit top, and the food was absolutely disgusting. No restaurant has any business serving that caliber of food for that (or any) price.

    Don't eat here.

    We love Uncle Julios.

We decided to take my husband's uncle and aunt who are visiting from India to Uncle Julios after an unfortunate experience at Piece.

We always take his parents for the margaritas when they are visiting from India.

I've never had a bad experience here.

We had a GREAT waitress.  I wish I knew her name to reference it.

We are all vegetarian and my husband's aunt does not eat eggs.  I mentioned this to the waitress and asked what was in the poblano soup, and the tamales.  (I did mention that I know a lot of soups are made with stock). She came back and told me that the soup was made with "tons" of stock, and the tamales do not have any eggs, but they do have butter.

We didn't mention anything about dairy, but I really appreciate that she realized that could be important.  (Everyone did eat dairy).  She also said she thought that the veggies in the quesadilla might have stock flavoring.

She went and checked on everything else we asked, and when she came back, she didn't specifically mention that rice had stock, but just kept suggesting "and I'll replace the rice with beans."

I personally know that mexican rice is (always I think) made with chicken stock.  So I know that she asked about that also.

If was clear that she asked about EVERY component of the meal.

I honestly never would have thought that the veggies would be cooked in stock, (And as a vegetarian I generally pay attention) she said it was pre-mixed so there was no way to avoid it.

She clearly went beyond "are there meat chunks in this" in her assessment.

Now, I don't eat meat ever, I don't knowingly eat stock or anything else.  But I also don't "freak" if I find out that my soup may have had some stock.  I already ate it...I'll live.

But this is more than a "lifestyle" choice for his aunt and uncle.
The waitress clearly realized this, and went beyond what I would have expected.

They also brought us some complimentary sopapillas for his aunt and uncle's first visit.  They did tell us that egg was in it initially, but they clearly went back to confirm, and came back out to tell us that there was no egg used.

Of course the service was great this trip.  But I've never had bad service, or bad food at Uncle Julios.  I also have never had to wait too long either!

I love the tamales, my husband loves the margaritas.  We'll continue being repeat customers for sure!

Since moving back to the city, I drive by Uncle Julio's all the time. It is always packed, with people just spilling out the door. I told myself one day I am going to go there. When my husband asked me where I wanted to go for our anniversary sans kids, I replied "Uncle Julio's."

How fortunate that our anniversary was on a Monday.  We went and it was not packed but busy. We were seated right away, and our server was there in a minute.  He was a fantastic, friendly and PROMPT server.

We ordered the fajitas for two. It was more than enough!! My cup was always full. They had chips and salsa. My husband order the queso and that was good. I was quite sad when I found myself scrapping the bowl for more. And I wanted to eat more. I wanted to be rolled out in a wheelbarrow cause I stuffed myself like a pig. Alas, my pregnant belly would not allow it.

They also brought us a dessert for our anniversary which I could barely eat after I tried to make myself a stuffed pig.

It was great.... go there... see how you can stuff yourself...

People - Uncle Julios is NOT authentic Mexican food - it's Tex Mex!!  So warning, if you want authentic Mexican, do not go to this restaurant.  If you want tasty tex mex and the most amazing chips you've ever had, then go to Uncle Julios!

So yes, the chips are super thin and warm and amazing, the best chips I've ever had, ever.  Salsa is pretty tasty too.  You can get some different entrees here, my husband always gets the ribs - they're tender and the sauce is unique and tasty, a very good yet unique rib dish.  The carne asada and the beef fajitas (same steak as the carne asada) is so good - the beef is super tender and cooked perfectly.  Love everything that the dishes come with too.  The chille rellino was not a good choice, I guess I should stick with the meats next time - it was way too bready, the coating was just to dense and thick.

Not a big fan of the frozen drinks, the swirl is just way too sweet, but you can get fresh made margaritas with better tequila, so it's all good.

Would recommend Uncle julios for anyone wanting a tasty Tex Mex dinner!

I have walked past Uncle Julio's multiple times and they seem to always have a crowd at the front door. It smelled good from the outside, so I figured it would be worth trying one day, which I did for a friend's birthday party.

They have decent Americanized Mexican food with OK margarita. I was shocked to see frog legs on the menu. So I ordered it and it was good but not great. I am not that crazy about the food here other than the fact that they have a flour tortilla maker in the restaurant where you can see how it goes from dough to tortilla. They also have a large space which is great for large parties.

Overall, a little pricey with OK food and large portions. Just wished they had a dish that I would come back for.
