Quite honestly the best pizza I've ever had in my life.  I am a big time foodie and have sampled pizza pies wherever I travel with special emphasis on my local haunts:  Zachary's, Delfina, Cheeseboard, etc.

My family and friends take an annual camping and fishing trip to the eastern Sierras.  Back in 2007, we came upon a quaint little pizza shop in Big Pine, CA.  Every year since, we've made a special "treat day" where we shun the usual camp food for a delicious Uncle Bud's pizza.

This summer, two of his large pizza's proved too much for us six ravenous travellers.  The staff is helpful and friendly.  The owner and one of his employees helped us make our selections and recommended some other specialty pies for our next visit.  We had the meat lover's and chicken ranch pizzas.

The toppings were plentiful with generous layers of cheese.  The crust is where these pies really shine.  The outer crust is crispy but once you bite into it you discover billow flavor-filled yeasty dough.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that they had added smoothies to their menu.  Each of us opted for a different flavor so we could try them all.  I had the peanut butter and chocolate.  Pure heaven!  Especially in the summer heat.

Fully satiated, we looked at the remaining slices of pizza and thought what a sacrilege it would be to throw them away.  We boxed them up and took them back to the campsite.  Later that night we stuck skewers through them and roasted them over the campfire for dinner.

This place is exceptionally good and would put any big-named metropolitan pizza shop to shame.  Its great place to fill hungry stomachs after a day of hiking through the Sierra mountains and fishing the many nearby streams.

In my dreary work-a-day life, I dream of being in the beautiful Owen's Valley, trout rod in hand, and the knowledge that I'll be at Uncle Bud's in the afternoon.  Its such a shame I live so far away but I feel lucky to experience this place at least once a year on my vacation.  Here's to Uncle Bud's pizza becoming part of our traditional trip and to many more years of enjoying these fine pizza pies and smoothies.

During a full day of driving on Highway 395, I stopped at Uncle Bud's for some pizza to keep me company for the remaining few hours until I made it back to LA.

I ordered a medium veggie pizza.  The price seemed a bit high at $20 with tax and the 25-minute wait was a surprise (especially since I was the only customer).  When I was handed the pizza box, I was stunned at the weight of it.  I got the pie to the car and opened the box.  It wasn't a shepherd's pie, it wasn't a pot pie, it wasn't a deep dish pizza.  I think Uncle Bud's created a new type of pizza:  the mountain pie.

Heavy, a loaf of bread's worth of dough, decent cow mozzarella, a tree's worth of olives and a garden's worth of vegetables all tasting fresh: I would throw this pie into my backpack if I was planning a snowy expedition through Yosemite.  My $20 now seemed like a bargain and I look forward to my next mountain pie when I'm on Highway 395.

P.S.  After a night at home in the refrigerator, this pizza tastes great cold.

Uncle Buds is the Eric Schadt's Bakery of pizza. The dough is both gooey and crunchy, the sauce is flavorful and the cheese is plentiful. If you are hungry on this lonely stretch of 395, eat here now.

I have been traveling up 395 for years for countless climbing and snowboarding weekends and I thought I knew all the restaurants that were worth my time and money.  So while bouldering with some friends they mentioned that the had to go to Uncle Bud's on their way back down south.  "Steph I did not know that you had family on the East Side?"  Turns out that Uncle Bud is a low key guy who makes awesome pizza, prefers not to advertise, and loves running a little pizza shop on the East Side of highway 395 in Big Pine.  Enjoy great service from Bud himself, made to order high quality pizzas, but don't give him too much business because it might scare poor Bud off.

I have been traveling to Big Pine for 20+ years.  We have done Katie's Kitchen (ouch) and Rossi's.  Rossi's is fine, but a bit over priced for a town population of 2500+.  We decided this trip to try Uncle Bud's.  The pizza was fantastic.  We live near S.F. and have many pizza places, but this pizza was excellent.  Great crust, not too much sauce and chesse and good quality of toppings.  We ordered the garden salad, again a great variety of ingredients.  We also order their bread sticks and they were great too. This establishment is a hidden gem and a great asset to the Eastern Sierra's.   Oh, did I mention, it is totally reasonable in price.  Thank you Uncle Bud!
