With a name like Uncle Billy's, you're not expecting the Four Seasons. Located in a strange little area called Saison in Hilo, next to the ocean (which looks like a bay here) amidst a long row of Banyon trees. It is old (40 years) and blue, with a cheesy little restaurant and bar, and old style rooms built when security was not an issue. Slatted windows that didn't really close and rickety doors. But I found that I liked the place. Sure, the carpet in the hallway looked many shades from what the original must have been but it looked clean.
The local girl working the counter was very friendly and when I asked her if that was the best rate she said she couldn't lower it any more but would give me a room with a "partial ocean view". "Partial" meant a hint of water if I peered at an odd angle back through some trees, but I liked her effort. And the room was clean and good sized, and had a refrigerator. The staff was friendly and this little place was actually pretty lively.
The most astonishing thing about this hotel was the infestation of thousands of the Puerto Rico coqui frogs that now live in the banyon trees, and make the most amazing sound, straight out of some alien sci-fi movie. While the locals find it annoying, I thought it lent the place a sort of supernatural air that fit with the out-of-time nature of the hotel. It was the kind of place you might imagine in a Stephen King book, and I mean that in a good way. -

Kind of depressing. Zero effort by the owners. We noticed there wasn't even any cheesy hawaiian art on the walls, just white wallpaper. Continental breakfast consists of English muffin or toast. The air conditioner was terrifyingly loud but we had to use it to drown out the sound of the coqui frog. The fan in the bathroom was also terrifyingly loud. I guess we got what we paid for?
